Chennai, Oct 23 (IANS) The relay fast against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) in Tamil Nadu entered the sixth day Sunday, with more and more people from nearby villages joining the protest.

About 1,500 villagers from Idin-thakarai, Kudankulam and Avu-daialpuram in Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district are on fast de-manding the closure of the nuclear power project, activist S. Sivasubra-

manian told IANS. In Aatur area in Tuticorin district, around 1,000 people are on fast. Similarly, in Radhapu-ram area of Tirunelveli, some 30 people are on fast, Sivasubramanian of the Peo-ple’s Rights Movement said.

India’s nuclear power plant op-erator Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) is constructing two 1,000 MW nuclear power reactors

with Russian technology and equipment in Kudanku-lam, around 650 km from here. The first unit is ex-pected to go on stream in December. The whole

project cost is estimated around Rs.13,000 crore.

Villagers are up against the power plant fearing a nuclear acci-dent and its long term impact on the population.

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Telangana employees JAC (Joint Action Com-mittee) will take a decision today on the government appeal to call off 40-day-old strike for separate state.

The Congress Sunday appealed to the leaders of the pro-Telangana agi-tation in Andhra Pradesh to call off their stir for a separate state in view of the hardships being faced by peo-ple during the festive season.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is incharge of Andhra Pradesh, urged the government employees to call off their strike which has been continu-ing for a month.

Azad said here that people will cel-ebrate major festivals of Diwali and

Eid-ul-Zuha over the next fortnight and strike by employees can cause hardships. He said a major part of discussions in the government and the party on the demand for carving out a separate state of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh was over but did not specify a time frame for a decision.

“We would like to take a decision as soon as possible,” he said.

He said the employees should call off strike and hold talks with the state government.

Congress sources said that the par-ty leadership was weighing various options before taking a decision on the issue which has caused divisions in its state unit.

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Team Anna Sunday dismissed allegations by activ-ist Swami Agnivesh that donations for its anti-graft stir were siphoned off by its member Arvind Kejri-wal, even as Congress leader Digvijay Singh demanded a probe into the matter.

Team Anna mem-ber Manish Sisodia dismissed the allega-tions made by Swami Agnivesh that Kejri-wal had siphoned off Rs.70-80 lakh belong-ing to India Against Corruption (IAC) and diverted the money to his private trust. Sisodia said details regard-ing their accounts will be soon put on the website of Public Cause Re-search Foundation (PCRF), which had functioned as the secretariat for Hazare’s agitation under the banner of the IAC.

“Our accounts are already on the website. We have conducted a spe-cial audit for the last six months and by the month end we are putting the details on the website,” Sisodia said.

Sisodia also said that they had no animosity towards Swami Ag-nivesh. “He could have said some-thing out of anger,” he added.

Meanwhile, former chief jus-tice of India J.S. Verma hit out at

another team member Kiran Bedi over allegations of overcharging institutions by inflating her travel expenses and said claiming money which one has not spent was “unac-ceptable.”

Bedi said there was a “pattern to defame” the members.

“Hang some of us if that helps...There is obviously a pattern to de-fame every member of Team Anna. It has been systematic from day one,” she said.

She said Team Anna was paying a personal cost for raising national concerns on rampant corruption and voter awareness to ensure the passing of the Jan Lokpal bill in parliament,” she said.

New Delhi, Oct 24 (IANS) The special court here considered the statements of witnesses presented by the CBI while framing charges against former communications minister A. Raja and 16 others for criminal breach of trust, brib-ery, forgery and cheating in the 2G spectrum case. The witnesses would be examined during the trial that begins Nov 11.

Trusting the statements of Cen-tral Bureau of Investigation (CBI) witnesses, Special Judge O.P. Saini Saturday said that there was in-criminating material on record against Raja and 16 others. The court said that there was direct

evidence against Raja, his former aide R.K. Chandolia and former telecom secretary Siddharth Be-hura. According to the court, the conspiracy to allocate 2G spec-trum to ineligible telecom opera-tors began after A. Raja became communications minister in 2007. Special Judge O.P. Saini said that the conspiracy continued till the last tranche of money, Rs.50 crore, was received by Kalaignar TV Aug 7, 2009, as illegal gratification.

The Karnataka High Court is expected today to give its ruling on the bail plea of Yeddyurappa filed last Monday, two days after he was arrested and sent to judicial custody. The arrested BJP leader’s counsel pleaded for releasing him on a week’s bail in view of Diwali.

Hyderabad, Oct 23 (IANS) The world's largest airplane, the Airbus A-380, made an emergency land-ing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) near here in the early hours of Sunday due to a technical snag.

The Emirates Airlines EK385 flight, with 481 passengers on board, was on its way from Bangkok to Dubai, an air-port official said.

This was the third time in three years that RGIA successfully handled an

A-380, the official said."The aircraft landed with 481 pas-

sengers safely at 3.40 a.m.," an airport spokesman told IANS.

The pilot cited a technical snag as the reason for making the emergency landing at the airport in Shamshabad, around 20 km from Hyderabad.

"At RGIA, the Airport Rescue Fire Fighters (ARFF) immediately upgrad-ed themselves from CAT-9 to CAT-10 category to ensure safe landing of the aircraft," said a statement from RGIA.

Running to raise funds for the blinds

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) George Abraham, who lost his eyesight when he was 10 months old and now heads NGO Score Foundation that runs India’s first helpline for the blind, will run in the Delhi Half Marathon next month to raise funds for a multilingual help desk for the blind.

Abraham will run the 21-km Del-hi Half Marathon on Nov 27. It is an annual event that sees participation from celebrities, sportspersons and large number of common people, including disabled. It will enter into its seventh edition this year.

“My target is to raise Rs.500,000 towards the Eyeway National Help-

desk for the blind, India’s first such helpline,” Abraham told IANS. He ran in the last event also.

The help desk was launched in 2006 when people from across the country started calling the NGO with queries pertaining to their lives with blindness in response to its weekly radio programme “Eyeway Yeh Hai Roshni Ka Karawan”.

His dream is to reach out to peo-ple in the language they are most comfortable with.

“Language must not be a barrier to gain access to information on life with blindness. We will launch Eye-way in Bengali and Malayalam later this year,” he said.

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Dismissing the plea of a man who killed his daughter after raping her in 2005, the Delhi High Court has upheld the rigorous imprisonment for life awarded to him by the trial court.A division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Veena Birbal dismissed the appeal filed by Mangal Singh in an order made available Saturday and said that the circumstantial evidence led to inescapable conclusion that it was he who murdered his daughter after committing rape upon her.

Diwali New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Diwali promises to be truly a festival of lights this year with an increasing number of environmentally-con-scious people in the metros, espe-cially in the national capital, opting for eco-friendly and smokeless fire-crackers.

Made of recycled paper, eco-friendly crackers do not contain as much chemicals as conventional firecrackers, and thus emit less smoke and noise.

“Unlike the normal cracker making method, the eco-friendly crackers are based on vacuum combustion method. These crack-ers produce colourful sparks with a considerable sound and less smoke,” A. Muthu, a fireworks dealer in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, told IANS.

According to a recent survey by the Associated Chambers of Com-merce and Industry of India (AS-SOCHAM), Sivakasi, home to over 9,500 firecracker factories, pro-duces almost the entire fireworks output of India.

Costing from Rs.15 to Rs.3,500, these crackers are also less expen-sive than the traditional ones.

Banned Manipuri outfit chief held for vehicle thefts

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Three youths from Manipur, including a self-styled commander of the banned People’s United Liberation Front (PULF), were arrested here for vehicle thefts, police said on Sunday.

Suraj Khan, 26, Ayub Khan, 36, and Rajib Sheiikh, 22, were arrested from from Munirka in south Delhi on October 19, Depu-ty Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma said. Suraj Khan is the self-styled PULF chief.

Suraj came to Delhi three years ago with his family and stayed in Maharani Bagh in south Delhi, where he started working with a security agency. A graduate, he came in contact with Ayub Khan, another graduate, and got into stealing vehicles.

Suraj had been arrested in Janu-ary for displaying a forged Indian Air Force identity card. He was later released on bail.

138 bodies found after Turkey quakeIstanbul (IANS) At least 138 bodies have been found after a magnitude-7.2 earthquake hit Turkey’s southeastern Van province Sunday, Prime Min-ister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said early Monday. Wall Street protests taking ona political hue

Washington, Oct 23 (IANS) With the 2012 election scene warming up, the snowballing wall street protests against corporate greed are slowly but surely taking on a political hue

as all things are wont to do during the election season.

With his approval rating down to 41 percent, according to the latest Gallup poll, an 18 point drop since he took over in January 2009, President Barack Obama has gradually though not fully moved to the side of the protesters. But while trying to use the move-ment as a vehicle to attack opposition Republican economic policies, he has also sought not to alienate Wall Street, whose ranks include some of his top fundraisers.

Obama who has raised tens of mil-lions of dollars for two presidential campaigns from Wall Street inter-

ests has also stressed the need for “a strong, effective financial sector in or-der for us to grow.” As the Washington Post reported this week, he and the Democratic National Committee have pulled in $15.6 million from the fi-nancial industry so far, more than the entire Republican presidential field combined.

Analysts have pointed out the perils of Obama identifying too closely with the Occupy movement and centrist Democrats have warned him to stay away lest he get burned if the move-ment becomes too radical for main-stream Americans.

Obama has even compared the Oc-cupy protests to the conservative Tea Party movement in the Republican camp saying they are “not that differ-ent from some of the protests we saw coming from the Tea Party.”

While Occupy forces find fault in the banks and super-rich, the Tea Par-ty movement blames the government for the economic calamity brought on by the mortgage crisis.

But given the fact that so far, most Americans do not align with either movement, as shown by recent polls, it’s hard to say which movement will carry the day - and with it which party or candidate - come election time in November 2012.

Dharamsala, Oct 23 (IANS) Tibetans in exile are reaching out to the inter-national community to intervene in ending human rights violations of Ti-betans in China.

An official of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), based in this Himachal Pradesh town, told IANS on Sunday a parliamentary delegation was in New Delhi last week to appraise various embassies of the ongoing re-pression by China.

“During the visit to Delhi, the del-egation met officials and functionaries of more than a dozen embassies, in-

cluding the US, Britain, France, Den-mark, Norway and Finland,” a CTA spokesperson said.

He said the delegation, headed by parliament speaker Penpa Tsering, also met members of the European Union.

The CTA said nine Tibetans im-molated themselves in protest against China’s policies, called for freedom and the return of the Dalai Lama to his homeland. It said five of the nine died.

Meanwhile, a French lawmaker has said: “France’s voice must be heard on the international stage and urged the

government to implement a policy which would ensure enforcement of human rights in China.”

Thousands of Tibetans Oct 19 par-ticipated in prayers there and other parts of the country to express solidar-ity with people of Tibet.

The Dalai Lama along with many of his supporters fled Tibet and took refuge in India when Chinese troops moved in and took control of Lhasa in 1959.

India is home to around 100,000 Tibetans.

42 years, was captured and killed by NTC fighters on Thursday near his home town of Sirte. There is still much controversy over the circum-stances surrounding his death.

The former Libyan strongman died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the results of an autopsy completed by doctors on Sunday.

Cairo, Oct 23 (IANS/RIA Novo-sti) Seif al-Islam, one of the sons of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has vowed to take revenge for his father’s death.

Al-Islam appeared on the Syria-based Alrai TV channel Saturday night with an appeal to his support-ers, saying he was alive and staying in Libya and intended to fight to the bitter end against the rebels.

“We are continuing resistance. I am in Libya, I am alive and free and willing to fight to the end and take

revenge,” the TV channel loyal to the Gaddafi regime quoted him as saying.

A website of Gaddafi’s supporters earlier posted a statement that Seif al-Islam had been named an heir to the Libyan dictator and charged with the command of forces fighting the rebels.

Gaddafi’s body is currently being kept in a cold store in a shopping centre in Misrata, and hundreds of Libyans have been queuing to see it.

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Pakistan on Sunday took into custody four soldiers aboard an Indian chopper which violated its airspace.

The helicopter was forced by the Pakistani Air Force to land and all four on board were taken into cus-tody, local media reported quoting military sources.

Signaling the spirit of the resumed peace process, an Indian Army helicopter that strayed into Pakistan in bad weather on Sunday returned with its crew after Paki-stani authorities let it go. India was prompt to appreciate Pakistan’s understanding.

The quick resolution of the issue, which could have be-come a potential diplomatic minefield, underlined the de-sire of the both countries to sustain the spirit of trust build-ing that has marked their engagement since they resumed their peace process early this year. The dialogue process was frozen after 26/11 Mumbai attacks in which Pakistani mili-tants were involved.

Indian military officials earlier said that pilot error forced the chopper to stray across the Line of Control (LoC) that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

Washington, Oct 23 (IANS) Louisiana’s Indian American Governor Bobby Jindal has been re-elected to a second term, winning in a landslide with little opposition from nine other candidates in a bi-partisan primary.

“You’ve chosen me to be your governor,” Jindal, who at age 36, was the youngest US governor when first elected in 2007, and the first Indian American governor, said at his campaign headquarters in Baton Rouge after his re-election on Saturday.

Jindal, who was widely favored to win, had 66 percent of the vote with 98 percent precincts reporting, accord-ing to unofficial results from Louisiana’s Secretary of State cited by CNN.

Jindal, who won his first term in 2007 with 54 percent of the vote, faced little opposition this time around.

Early in his first term, Jindal was widely considered a rising Republican star. Speculation about his potential 2012 presidential run started almost as soon as President Barack Obama took office in January 2009.

But he repeatedly denied any intention to run for pres-ident this year and now backs Texas Governor Rick Perry for the Republican presidential nomination.

India’s forex reserves surge by $5.27 billion

Mumbai, Oct 23 (IANS): India’s foreign exchange reserves surged by $5.27 billion to $317.50 billion for the week ended Oct 14, one of the sharpest rise in recent months, on the back of huge gain in the value of foreign currency assets, official data showed. This is the second straight weekly gain in the country’s foreign reserve kitty. The reserves had increased by $749 million in the previous week. Foreign currency as-sets, the biggest com-ponent of the forex reserves kitty, shot up by $5.19 billion to $281.65 billion dur-ing the week under review, according to the weekly statisti-cal supplement of

the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The RBI does not provide any reason for the change in the foreign currency assets. It says the assets expressed in US dollar terms include the

effect of appreciation

or depreciation of non-US currencies such as the pound sterling, euro and yen held in the reserves. Analysts said one of the major reasons behind the sharp increase in the value of foreign currency assets was the strengthening of euro against the US dollar. at the beginning. India’s reserves with the International Mon-etary Fund (IMF) rose by $29 million to $2.63 billion. And the value of special drawing rights (SDRs) increased by $49 million to $4.54 billion

during the week under review. However, the value of gold re-serves remained unchanged at $28.66 billion.

Greater Noida, Oct 23 (IANS): Over 150 food joints, parking fa-cility for 16,000 cars, a helipad, two-medical facilities and a media centre may sound like a mini-city, but these are just some of the facili-ties to cater to an expected 100,000 spectators of the inaugural Indian grand prix here.

“Our plan is simple, we want every spectator to enjoy the race; for this we have created several world class facilities which will look after all the needs of the spec-tators and the teams,” said Sameer Gaur, managing director of Jaypee Sports International (JPSI). Gaur said the Buddh International Cir-cuit was more than just asphalt and concrete, as it houses several state-of-the-art facilities ranging

from technical assistance for the race teams to kitchens dishing out cuisines from the world over. The inaugural race is scheduled for Oct 28-30. The food section has been designed to cater to the palette of Indian and international specta-tors, teams and the huge contin-gent of overseas media. Popular culinary brands such as Haldirams and Nirula’s will also put up their stalls. The race track facility also houses a media centre for around 450 international journalists ex-pected to be at the three-day event and offers a dedicated broadband with speed of 840 MB. Another big attraction will be a performance from American pop icon Lady Gaga -- her first ever in India -- on the last day of the race.

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS): With the rising cost of fuels and power, the number of people and house-holds using energy efficient prod-ucts has risen sharply in recent years, a survey by consumer ad-vocacy group CUTS International revealed. More than 43 percent households are currently using en-ergy efficient products in one form or other. An additional 22 percent are aware of such products but are not using them due to various rea-sons, the survey said.

Commenting on the survey, CUTS International Secretary Gen-eral Pradeep Mehta said increasing awareness about energy efficiency was a positive development and would benefit consumers as well as the economy. However, Mehta observed that despite the increas-ing levels of awareness, energy effi-ciency was not a primary criterion for purchasing home appliances.

Out of those consumers who said they are facing problems in shifting to energy efficient products, high cost of appliances is a major barrier for 34 percent of the respondents, while non-availability is an issue for another 21 percent. An overwhelm-ing number of households, 67 per-cent, asked for reduction in the price of energy efficient products, either through subsidization or reduction in the cost of production. However, a majority of consumers are willing to pay a reasonable premium for us-ing more energy efficient products. More than 56 percent of surveyed households were willing to pay more if products are of good quality and reduce their energy consump-tion, the survey said.

Prices soar in blockade-hit Manipur

Imphal, Oct 23 (IANS): The eco-nomic blockade in Manipur demand-ing a separate district entered the 84th day Sunday, even as it has led to sky rocketing prices of various commodi-ties, officials said. The blockade which began Aug 1, on two arterial national highways (NH) in northern Manipur, has led to an unrivalled crisis of es-sentials commodities. Prices have shot up three to four times, according to officials.

“The chief minister and Gover-nor Gurbachan Jagat have repeatedly urged the agitators to withdraw the blockade,” a government official told reporters here Saturday.

The Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) began the in-definite road blockade on NH 53 and NH 39 that links the northeastern state with the rest of the country. They are demanding that the Sadar Hills sub-division in the Naga-dominated Senapati district in northern Manipur be upgraded as a full-fledged district. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P. Chidambaram in New Delhi last week and discussed the blockade impasse with them.

“But the SHDDC refused to call off the blockade reiterating their demand that the district should be created first,” the official added.

Government spokesman and Min-ister N. Biren Singh admitted that the blockade has created a severe shortage of essential commodities, including diesel and petrol. Currently, a kg of potato costs Rs.40 to Rs.50 while a kg of onions is Rs.60 to Rs.70. Biren Sin-gh told reporters that the government was trying to move essentials and fuel through trucks with security escorts.

The United Naga Council, the apex body of Nagas in Manipur, has also been organizing a counter road blockade in all Naga-inhabited areas in northern Manipur, demanding that these areas should not be carved out without their consent. The main op-position parties including Manipur People’s Party (MPP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been de-manding president’s rule in the state to normalize the situation. Blockade supporters torched at least 35 Imphal-bound trucks, including two carrying medicines, at Nungkao village in the hill district of Tamenlong, 215 km west of Imphal, a food department of-ficial said.

Keeping that Alco-meter down this festival

Delhiities have always been notorious with their night life, and with rapid motorization, attitude towards al-cohol consumption has fast changed and is now con-sidered to be fashionable and cool. To add to the woes, as the festive season fast approaches with all the glitter and joy that it brings with it, somewhere down there lies a hint of fear too. The fear of road accidents because of the people who drive under the influence of alcohol!

In order to keep a check on road accidents because of drunk driving and avoid incidents of hooliganism the Delhi Police is running a special drive (21st Oct- 26th Oct) this Diwali. Stepping up the heat on the people who drive after consuming alcohol, the drive aims at catching drunk drivers, suspending their licenses and sending them to jail if necessary.

Driving under the influence of alcohol is alarmingly high amongst the citizens in the national capital of In-dia and according to studies there has been an increase of about 52% since 2004 in the road accidents that hap-pen due to alcohol. While, such safety drives were done

once or twice in a week randomly, Delhi Police this time is leaving no stone un-turned to make the festive season a little safer for the city people.

Identifying around 438 pubs and bars where alcohol consumption is the most in the city, Delhi police will deploy their teams at the peak hours of the place and keep a check on the security too.

Over the years the Delhi Police records show a con-sistent rise in prosecution levels, but it fails to indicate the number of drunk drivers who are actually driving but not prosecuted. Shrugging off the allegations of leniency towards drunk drivers, the traffic police has urged courts to put the defaulters behind the bars at least for a day if not more alongside the fine that one is supposed to pay.

No drill is successful without the support of the lo-cals and the Delhi Police expects people to stand up to the cause, especially in a city where about 17% of the government hospital beds are occupied by the road ac-cident victims due to alcohol.

In Delhi, prosecution against drunk driving has increased from 1,535 in 2001 to nearly 7,343 in 2008. Drunk driving is still considered a minor offence, and not considered a major crime that puts public safety at risk. Thus all offenders are charged under section 304(a) rather than the more stringent 304. Drunk driving is a bail-able offence, so even after causing death and grievous injuries, within no time drivers are out on bail. 3 out of 10 drivers on Delhi roads are drunk during night time.

l Blood alcohol tests are rarely conducted within the first cou-ple of hours after the supposed defaulter is caught and in most cases appearance of the offender is a measure of drunkenness.l With the ever increasing number of bars and pubs. It has become an easy act for anyone to buy alcohol, thanks to the ex-cise department. And to make the matter worst it is also unable to check underage drinking.l Not all late evening and night patrolling teams carry al-co-meters, thereby; authentici-ties of the cases are questioned regularly.

l Hire a cab if you are drunk when out, if that means leaving your car in the parking lot of the hotel or the pub; so be it!l Don’t let any drunk person drive the car; don’t mind being the chauffer for the night.l Help out the police and re-port any incident/person that you think they should keep an eye on.

Learn from Failure: How It Increases Your

Chances of SucceedingLearn from failure, you probably have heard it all from articles, stories and books. I won’t bore you with them here.

This article is to drive home some key points about learning from failure. Lessons you probably are very familiar with but need reminder about. Or if you are new to this thing called failure then it will serve as a springboard to better success. I hope.

You hear stories about failure. You hear stories about success. You hear how failure is the mother of all successes. Yet, you are still fearful of failure. As if it is a black mark that will appear in your report card of life if you did fail. And fail you will, if you are like the rest of us mere mortals. Does that mean you stop trying?

Nothing ventured, nothing gain. You have to be willing to take the risk venture beyond the comfort zone regardless of what area you are in to gain some form of success. Think about the entrepreneurs, scientists, leaders and businesses which took the path less trodden and how they were rewarded handsomely.If you are willing to pay the price with the risk you take, then the returns may just surprise you. But, but what if I fail, you ask.

Yes, it’s OK to fail. The adage we learn from failure is true. Be open with your mind, eyes and ears. The lessons are there for you to understand and do better next time. Think about what you have done right, what you can do better and what you should stop doing. That is one of the easiest ways to analyze how to learn from failure. One side point, in cases like these I dislike to use the word failure. Setback is my preferred word.

Think about this, if you do not fail in any of your endeavor, how do you learn to be better? How do you become wiser? People say experience is the best teacher. If you accept that to be true then you need to accept failure as one of the many lessons you gain from experience. So, you get to learn from failure. It’s that simple. Think about failure as lessons paid in the journey of life.

Allow yourself the freedom to fail if you want to learn from failure. When you are too cautious, you do not allow yourself to take any risks. If you are safe all the time, then you are not giving yourself the opportunity to learn from failure. Give yourself the freedom to fail and see how the lessons of success open up for you.

The fear of failure may not necessarily be bad as it propels you to succeed. Some people use it as a motivating factor to ensure they succeed. As long as you do not get paralyzed into inaction and limit your appetite for taking risk, I believe the fear of failure as a propelling factor can be of good use.

There can be no success without failure. You should welcome failure as an opportunity to learn and you will learn from failure. The fees for learning from failure may seem too high sometimes, but in the long run you will somehow discover it a worthwhile price to pay.

The city of Amritsar was built around the Golden Temple which sits on a rectan-

gular platform in the centre of the Amrit Sarovar Lake. The temple is surrounded by a white marble corridor, through which pilgrims visiting the shrine walk, circum-navigating the temple. A narrow causeway links the Harmandir, or Darbar Sahib, as the temple is also called. The entrance to the temple is through an ornate archway with intricate inlay work, inscribed with verses from the Granth Sahib.

The shrine is three storeys high and is crowned with a dome shaped like an inverted lotus. The lower storey is in white marble, while the two upper storeys have gold plating. The temple has four entrances instead of the usual single entry, symbolic of the openness of Sikhism and the fact that followers of all faiths are welcome here. The walls within are

There are convenient flights from Delhi to Amritsar as well as trains like the Shatabdi Express that link the two cities. If you’re visiting the temple, however, it’s best to go to the langar for a taste of traditional Sikh hospitality. Shrines on the northern edge of the corridor are venerated as the 68 holy shrines of the Hindus. Many of these shrines have now been converted into a martyr’s gallery showing the history of the Sikhs. Around the Parikrama, or pathway, are four rec-tangular cubicles where Granthis (priests) sit and recite the Granth Sahib. Pilgrims leave offerings at the steps, and can also get the holy book recited in their names for a donation.

The Jubi tree, at the northwestern corner of the complex, was planted some 450 years ago by the temple’s first head priest. The old, gnarled tree is believed to have special powers and childless women tie strips of cloth on it to be blessed with sons.

Sports Kohli, Raina power India to six-wicket victory

Mumbai, Oct 23 (IANS): Half cen-turies from Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina gave India a comprehensive six-wicket victory over England at the Wankhede stadium on Sunday, and a 4-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.

The hosts are now a win away from completing a whitewash in what was touted to be a "revenge series" after their recent winless tour of England.

Electing to bat, the visitors fum-bled against the Indian spinners to be all out for 220 in 46.1 overs. In reply, India were reduced to 46-3, but Kohli

(86 not out) and Raina (80) put up

a 131-run stand to take the hosts to victory.

Stockholm, Oct 23 (IANS): India's Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi won the Stockholm Open men's doubles title with a comprehensive 6-1, 6-3 vic-tory over Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares on Sunday.

It was top-seeded India-Pakistan pair's second ATP World Tour title of the season, following victory on grass at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle in June and overall, their third title as a team.

Malaysian MotoGP cancelled

Kuala Lumpur, Oct 23 (IANS): A second lap accident forced the organizers to cancel the Malaysian MotoGP in Sepang on Sunday.

Dorna, the com-pany which runs MotoGP, "decided to cancel the remaining of the race", Xinhua quoted a race official as saying.

The race was stopped when Honda rider Marco Simon-celli fell and was hit by Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi.

Sepang, Oct 23 (IANS): Italian MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli died on Sunday following his crash during the second lap of the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The race was cancelled in the wake of the horrific accident that killed Simoncelli as he slid across the track while riding his Honda. Yamaha's Colin Edwards and Ducati's Valentino Rossi were also injured in the incident.

The 24-year-old's helmet came off with the strong impact of the crash.

Simoncelli was immediately rushed to the circuit's medical centre where he was declared dead.

Simoncelli's death is the first in the premier class category since another Honda rider, Dai-jiro Kato, was killed at the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix.

Simoncelli won the 250cc world championship in 2008.

Auckland, Oct 23 (IANS): New Zealand's All Blacks pulled off a historic 8-7 victory over France on Sunday to take the Rugby World Cup for the first time in 24 years.

For the home team it was un-doubtedly the biggest game of their lives, a chance to hold aloft the Webb Ellis Cup for the first time since they last held it after the very first Rugby World Cup final against France in 1987.

The French put on a determined face from the start, lining up in a V-formation and marching for-ward as the All Blacks performed their traditional pre-match haka.

Rahman has added another prestigious trophy to his shelf -- the public choice award for "If I Rise" from "127 Hours" at the World Soundtrack Awards 2011 at Ghent, Belgium. "Thanks to my fans and the World Soundtrack Academy for the Public Choice award for the score of '127 Hours'," Rahman posted on his Facebook page.

The World Soundtrack Academy Saturday announced the 2011 winners at the closing of the 38th Ghent International Film Festival. According to Deadline.com, "The Stand" is a story about good versus evil. Since then he has slept under a lo-cal bridge and relied on a network of local churches and Goodwill Industries to survive. Before los-ing his job a year and a half ago, Ciconne peddled the family collec-tion, which at one point included five varieties of Madonna Wine.

The actor is the father of Mad-dox, 10, Pax, seven, Zahara, six, Shiloh, five, and three-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. While the couple is in no hurry to add to their brood, 47-year-old Pitt admits it will probably happen in the future.

"Probably. Most likely. Parent-hood is the greatest and most important endeavour of my life. Why stop at this point?" he said.

Los Angeles, Oct 24 (IANS): Actress Lindsay Lohan's mother will pen a book where she would talk about her daughter's time when she was involved in drugs and alcohol. In the memoir's prologue draft, Dina wrote: "I blamed her friends, her career and her handlers for an (sic) newfound lifestyle of partying excessively. Drinking, drugging and behaving ir-responsibly became Lindsay's way of daily living-and it tore me up inside." Dina has arranged meetings with publishers for her book and also gave a sample of her writing, reports aceshowbiz.com. Further in the prologue, Dina revealed why she let Lindsay move to Los Angeles. "How could I deny my daughter the chance of a lifetime? How could I hold Lindsay back from her dream of becoming an actress? So, I listened to others and sent my daughter to Hollywood with a few pieces of luggage and a chaperone."
