A water fountain in your home can be

an extremely valuable asset. Fresh clean

IN BRIEF

Prashant Bhushan bashed up, one attacker held

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) As a TV news channel stood by filming the entire incident, three Sri Ram Sene activists roughed up Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan inside his Supreme Court chamber for his comments on Kashmir. The bra-zen attack sparked massive public and political outrage with Bhushan calling for a ban on the outfit.

Three youths stormed into Bhushan’s chamber and one of them, identified as Inder Verma,

started beating him up. Verma, lat-er on, was overpowered by lawyers and others present in the room, the TV visuals showed. The youths said they objected to his comments on Kashmir, Bhushan said later.

“The accused, Inder Verma who lives in Nangloi, has been arrested from the Supreme Court premises and his two accomplices -- Vishnu Gupta and Tejender Pal -- are on the run,” said a senior police offi-cial.

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) Team Anna Wednesday wel-comed the government’s reported intention to give the Lokpal (ombudsman) a constitutional status but said that should not prevent it from being made a statutory body.

The Congress said giving Lokpal constitutional sta-tus was a very important suggestion but a decision will depend on the collective wisdom of the parliamentary standing committee examining the bill.

“Well, we have been saying that it will be great if Lokpal could be made into a constitutional authority. But mak-ing it into a constitutional authority should not prevent it from being made into a statutory body,” Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan told reporters.

Hisar (Haryana), Oct 13 (IANS) The Lok Sabha by-election in Hisar happening today has evoked nation-wide interest due to the campaign by Anna Hazare and his team to defeat the Congress and a triangular fight among the leading political players of Haryana. The contest is primarily between the Congress, the opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Haryana Janhit Congress-Bharatiya Janata Party combine.

Team Anna’s anti-Congress campaign has queered the pitch for the ruling party in the election, giving it a national colour. The stakes are high for the political parties contesting the by-poll as it comes almost in the middle of the term of the present assembly.

Coal shortage leads to power outages across India

Kashmir interlocutors submit report, focus on ‘meaningful autonomy’

India seeks Dawood aide ‘Mirchi’ extradition New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) A day after Iqbal Memon alias ‘Iqbal Mirchi’, a close aide of gangster Dawood Ibrahim, was arrested in London, India Wednesday said he was a “wanted person” for his role in the 1993 bombing and was initiating his extradition. The 61-year-old Iqbal Mirchi is among India’s most wanted along with his boss Dawood Ibrahim and the two are accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. Mirchi was declared a proclaimed offender by an Indian court in 1994 and had fled India in 1995. An Interpol notice is pending against him.Mirchi, against whom an Interpol Red Corner Notice has been pend-

Centre okays Rs.120 crore more for quake-hit West BengalNew Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) The central government Wednesday approved financial assistance worth Rs.120 crore to West Bengal following the recent earthquake that rocked the region. An earthquake of 6.8-mag-nitude Sep 18 affected five districts of Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Uttar Dina-jpur and Malda of north West Bengal adjoining the epicenter of the quake near the Indo-Nepal border in Sikkim.

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) A severe shortage of coal has hit electricity output in the country and led to long and frequent power outages in many states, including the national capital, Maharash-tra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Most of the plants of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), the country’s largest power pro-ducer, have been generating significantly less power than their installed capacity for the last couple of weeks due to the shortage of coal supply, an official said Wednes-day.

Heavy rains in coal producing ar-eas and a two-day strike by workers of Coal India compounded the prob-lems of many power plants across the

country, he said.Talking to reporters here,

Power Secretary P. Uma Shankar said the government would sell coal to power com-panies through e-auctions to address their concerns.

“The coal secretary has told us that the coal ministry will be able to spare some of the coal that would be sold through e-auctions, pro-vided the developer picks up the coal from the pithead,” Shankar said.

The national capital Delhi has been facing frequent power cuts for over a week.

New Delhi/Jammu/Srinagar, Oct 12 (IANS) Advocating “meaningful au-tonomy” and speedy development, the three interlocutors on Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday submitted their report to Home Minister P. Chidam-baram that outlines a roadmap for the government to address various sensitive issues linked to the state.

A year after they were appointed, the interlocutors -- journalist Dileep Padgoankar, academic Radha Kumar and former civil servant M.M. An-sari -- are learnt to have also recom-mended the withdrawal of the Armed

Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the Disturbed Areas Act from the state that has seen a murderous insur-gency for over two decades.

However, even as details of the interlocutors’ report on Jammu and Kashmir have not been made pub-lic, the separatist leaders, the ruling National Conference (NC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed their dismay at the report.

“After one complete year the inter-locutors have not said a word about the real political issue of Kashmir. It

has been a complete waste of time. Our decision to stay away from the team proved right,” said Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, chairman of the mod-erate Hurriyat group while comment-ing on whatever is yet known through the media about the interlocutors’ recommendations.

Mehbooba Mufti, president of the PDP, said, “There is neither an inter-nal nor an external dimension to the recommendations made by the inter-locutors’ team.

2G Scam: CBI to oppose bail plea by Kanimozhi

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) The Cen-tral Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Wednesday told the Supreme Court that it would oppose the bail plea of Kanimozhi, DMK leader M. Karu-nanidhi’s daughter and Rajya Sabha member, and all the accused current-ly in judicial custody for their alleged involvement in 2G scam.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Harin Rawal told this to the apex court bench of Justice G.S. Sin-ghvi and Justice H.L. Dattu when the court drew his attention to media reports indicating that the CBI was planning not to oppose the bail plea

of Kanimozi.Rawal told the court that when

this report was carried by the media he got in touch with the CBI officials who denied it. He said that the media report was incorrect.

In March, Kanimozhi was ques-tioned by the CBI in Chennai in con-nection with Rs.214 crore received by Kalaignar TV, in which a major-ity stake is owned by Karunanidhi’s family, from DB Realty group of companies. Kanimozhi is in jail now charged as co-conspirator in the 2G spectrum scam along with former communications minister A. Raja.

Advani yatra gets Mayawati’s green signal

Lucknow, Oct 12 (IANS) The Ut-tar Pradesh government Wednes-day evening gave its go-ahead to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veter-an L.K. Advani’s Jan Chetna Yatra for holding a rally at Mughal Sarai in Varanasi district, about 300 km from here.

The Varanasi district adminis-tration that had withdrawn per-mission for holding the Advani rally following refusal by the Indi-an Railways to allow any political function on their ground, eventu-ally gave its nod after the railways reversed its decision.

Advani’s rally was in for road-blocks after roadblocks right from the outset. Initially the air-condi-

tioning of the bus developed some defect following which BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley got unwell. Then, the bus was re-placed, but the new one got stuck under a bridge and could not be move without damaging the top portion of the vehicle.

Shivani Bhatnagar murder: Ex-cop R.K. Sharma walks free

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) Unde-terred by Beijing’s objections, India and Vietnam on Wednesday sealed an accord for oil exploration in the South China Sea and signed half a dozen pacts, including an extradition treaty, to expand their strategic part-nership.

India and Vietnam, Southeast Asia’s fastest growing economy, also launched a security dialogue and set a bilateral trade target of $7 billion to add more economic heft to their growing relationship.

In a subtle message aimed at Bei-jing, whose relations with Hanoi are under strain over a host of issues, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called India’s strategic partnership with Vietnam “a factor of peace, sta-bility and development” in the Asia-Pacific region. However, he added that the relationship stood “on its

own merits”.Manmohan Singh also underlined

that India and Vietnam were mari-time neighbours in the region and would work together to confront se-curity challenges from terrorism, pi-

racy and natural disasters.“We have to work together to en-

sure the safety and security of vital sea lanes of communication and con-tinue exchanges in this fields in the future,” he said.

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) The Su-preme Court on Wednesday took a serious view of union Law and Justice Minister Salman Khur-shid’s statement that keeping busi-nessmen in jail was affecting the investment climate of the country.

The apex court bench of Jus-tice G.S. Singhvi and Justice H.L. Dattu said that the minister’s state-ment gave an impression as if “we are interested in keeping business-men behind bars”.

He said that there “is a confu-sion created by a newspaper report. A newspaper has reported a state-ment attributed to an honourable minister that gives an impression

(that) we are interested in keeping businessmen behind bars”.

Justice Dattu said the statement was made “when we are in the midst of a serious matter going on for six hearings”.

The court was hearing the bail pleas of Sanjay Chandra, the head of the telecom arm of Unitech, and Vinod Goenka of DBA Realty in the second generation (2G) spec-trum allocation scam.

Khurshid had earlier said that the judiciary and other institutions should understand realities of “po-litical economy” and that keeping businessmen jailed would discour-age investments into the country.

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) Three years after he was convict-ed in the 1999 murder of Indian Express journalist Shivani Bhat-nagar, former police officer R.K. Sharma on Wednesday walked out of the Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court acquitted him and two other co-accuseds be-cause the evidence against them was “not convincing enough”.

“The quality of evidence be-fore us is not of a high calibre,” said the division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Man-mohan Singh while acquitting former Indian Police Service of-ficer R.K. Sharma along with co-accused Sri Bhagwan Sharma and Satya Prakash.

The high court upheld the life sentence of the fourth convict, Pradeep Sharma. “Although the motive behind Pradeep Sharma killing Shivani Bhatnagar is unclear and has not been estab-lished, we have already found, on the basis of other overwhelm-ing scientific and circumstantial evidence, that he was the person who killed her,” the court said.

New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) A retired In-dian Army personnel and a woman from Assam were arrested here for duping thousands of people across the country on the pretext of providing jobs in the Indian Army and health ministry, police said on Wednesday.Archana Singha, 45, who hails from Jorhat in Assam, was arrested from her house on Oct 9 and Ravinder Chauhan, 27, who hails from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, was held from Hazrat Nizamuddin rail-way station here Sep 9, said Deputy Com-missioner of Police Ashok Chand.Ravinder Chauhan was nabbed from the railway station in his Honda City car fol-lowing a tip-off. "He was carrying a pistol along-with 15 live cartridges and an arm licence purportedly issued from Jammu and Kashmir," said Chand adding that the license was found be to be fake.

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) The Delhi High Court on Wednesday adjourned till Oct 18 the regular and in-terim pleas for bail by Rajya Sabha member and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, an accused in the 2008 cash-for-votes scandal.Justice Ajit Bharihoke ad-journed the matter till Oct 18 after the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) submitted Amar Singh’s med-ical report. The court accepted the report and noted that it needed time to go through it. Delhi Police opposed the peti-tioner’s bail pleas.

Wednesday.Cedrick Kanyeba, 26, who hails from Nigeria, and Cherry Samson, 20, who hails from Kensington in South Africa, were arrested from a spot on Au-robindo Marg on Tuesday, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand.

male guppies as they relate to their individual social history.

Pakistan decides to grant MFN status to India: Khar

Islamabad, Oct 12 (IANS) Pakistan had, in principle, decided to grant Most Favored Nation (MFN) sta-tus to India, said Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar on Wednesday.

Responding to a question dur-ing question hour in the National Assembly, Khar said the dialogue process with India had been initi-ated after a gap of two years.

"The top-most priority of the country is to ensure uninterrupted dialogue with India so that the resolution of core Kashmir could be ensured," Khar added.

To another question she said, "Pakistan wants good relations with India by sticking to its principled stance on Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with the will of the Kashmiri people and to be deter-

mined through a free and fair plebi-scite under the UN auspices".

During the past three years, Jam-mu and Kashmir dispute has been discussed at all bilateral interac-tions between the leadership of the two countries as well as at the for-eign secretary levels.

"I raised the Jammu and Kash-mir issue with my Indian counter-part at the ministerial meeting in New Delhi in July 2011," said Khar.

"The joint statement of the min-isterial meeting underscored the need for continued discussion of Jammu and Kashmir in a purpose-ful and forward-looking manner with a view to finding a peaceful so-lution by narrowing divergence and building convergences," she added.

UN votes for one-year extension of international force in Afghanistan

United Nations, Oct 12 (IANS) The UN Security Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to adopt resolution 2011, which ex-tended the mandate of an inter-national force that aims to quell insurgencies in Afghanistan.

The resolution said that the 15-member Council "decides to extend the aut hor i z a-tion of the Internation-al Security Assis ta nce Force (ISAF) as defined in resolution 1386 (2001) and 1510 (2003) for a pe-riod of twelve months until Oct 13, 2012” as per reports.

The ISAF, led by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), was established to oper-ate against insurgents in Afghani-stan and help strengthen Afghan-istan's national security forces.

The UN first authorized the work of the ISAF in Kabul and the sur-rounding area through Security Council resolution 1386, and then through resolution 1510, expand-ed the scope of the ISAF's man-date to other parts of the country.

The resolution said that the Council also welcomes an agree-

ment be-tween ISAF contributing c o u n t r i e s and the Af-ghan gov-ernment to

transfer lead security responsibil-ity for Afghanistan entirely to the national government by the close of 2014.

NATO has said it will conduct withdrawal of its troops over the next few years in order to work toward this goal, though some troops will remain to support and train Afghan forces.

India, Africa discuss setting up of 80 training institutions

Addis Ababa, Oct 12 (IANS) India has discussed the action plan with the African Union to set up over 80 training and capacity building institutions across Africa, an impor-tant decision that was unveiled at the second summit in Addis Ababa in May.

India and the 53-member AU discussed the Action Plan under the Enhanced Framework of Cooperation adopted at the Second India Af-rica Forum Summit held in Addis Ababa May 24-25. The Indian del-

egation was led by Gurjit Singh, Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs.

After the offer of 21 institu-tions at the First India Africa Fo-rum Summit, India plans to es-tablish more than 80 institutions in Africa. Several of these would be im-

plemented bilaterally, for which offers of specific institutions have been made to various African countries, according to a press re-lease from the Indian embassy in Ethiopia.

Clinton to hold Iran accountable for Saudi envoy

plot

Washington, Oct 13 (IANS) US State Secretary Hillary Clinton on Wednesday vowed to hold Iran accountable for its alleged involvement in a "terror plot" to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington.

This plot was "a flagrant viola-tion of international and US law and a dangerous escalation of the Iranian government's long-standing use of political violence and sponsorship of terrorism," Clinton said during an event or-ganized by the Centre for Ameri-can Progress.

"This kind of reckless act un-dermines international norms and the international system," she said. "Iran must be held account-able for its actions."

Clinton's tough-worded re-marks came after two men were charged by the US Justice Depart-ment Tuesday for their alleged participation in a plot to assas-sinate the Saudi ambassador to the US.

The two suspects are Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year- old natu-ralized US citizen holding both Iranian and US passports, and Iranian Gholam Shakuri.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi on Wednesday strongly rejected the US accusa-tions.

'Occupy Wall Street' movement sparks clashes in Washington

Washington, Oct 12 (IANS) "Occupy Wall Street", a growing movement blam-ing corporate America for the nation's economic woes, has spread from New York to some 70 major cities, in-cluding the national capital Washington DC.

The movement, which has been compared by some to the Arab Spring move-ment, sparked clashes in the capital and Boston, where several pro-testers were arrested on Tuesday.

In Washington, six people were

arrested as they entered a Senate office building and began chanting loudly and unfurling banners calling for the end of overseas wars and for increased taxes on the rich.

Originally called for by the Canadian activist group Adbusters, the "Occupy Wall Street" participants are mainly protesting against social and economic ine-

quality, corporate greed, and the influ-ence of corporate money and lobbyists on government.

General Vivek Tankha appearing for the CBI “you have to be reasonable in your approach. You have a lot of re-sponsibility on you. You have to have some impartiality in your approach.” The four former officials of Satyam Computers Services Ltd along with the firm’s erstwhile owner Ramalinga Raju and his brother are facing prosecution for fudging the company accounts and showing inflated profits which became one of the greatest corporate scams. The surfacing of the scam and consequent collapse of the company left lakhs of shareholders and others duped.

Women workforce underpaid in India: World BankNew Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS): Women’s weekly wages in India are 71 percent of men’s in salaried work, a World Bank report said Wednesday. The ‘Gender Equality and Development’ report found that inequalities in wages notwithstanding, the women clearly want to work. “While wages have risen in aggregate for all over last 10 years, lower wages among women compared with men are probably discouraging women from working outside the home,” the report said.

BlackBerry services disturbed

for third consecutive day

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS): Ca-nadian handset maker Research in Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry services continued to remain dis-rupted across the country for the third consecutive day Wednes-day. “The trans-national outage at RIM continues and some Black-Berry services remain affected,” Reliance Communications said in a statement sent to its Black-Berry users. BlackBerry services had collapsed in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Middle East Monday evening. RIM claimed early Tues-day that it had fixed the problem and services have been restored. However, within a few hours the services collapsed again, causing hardships to the users, many of whom rely on it for their business communication. Another tele-com operator, Vodafone said that the Canadian firm had identified the problem and is set to solve it. The customers were disappointed as their daily activities were se-verely affected by the glitch. “I have been literally left paralyzed by the breakdown. I haven’t been able to access my emails and chat with my friends properly. It’s frus-trating because they want us to shell out big bucks for their ser-vices when they do not even have effective back-ups in place,” said Pallavi Singh, a Delhi University student.

Agitating workers asked to vacate Maruti premises

Gurgaon, Oct 13 (IANS): The dis-trict administration has taken strong exception to the workers’ strike in Maruti-Suzuki plant at Manesar and at Suzuki’s two-wheeler plant. The work-ers have been advised to refrain from taking the law into their hands. The workers have alleged that the admin-istration “is a puppet of Maruti Su-zuki India Limited”. This decision was taken at a meeting of senior officers of district administration, police and la-bor department on Wednesday. In the meeting, the officers of labor depart-ment informed that a notice of breach of agreement has been issued to the striking workers of Maruti-Suzuki Manesar plant and Suzuki two wheel-er plants. The Labour Commissioner said that the strike called by the Union of workers of Suzuki PowerTrain India Ltd and Suzuki Motor Cycle India Ltd has been declared illegal and the pro-cess for cancellation of the ‘union’ has been initiated by the Labour depart-ment. The strike of workers in Maruti Suzuki Private India Ltd has also been declared illegal. It was also decided in

the meeting that movement of men and material in all the three plants should be free and workers sitting on strike inside the plants have been advised to vacate the premises of the companies/ plants immediately so that a conducive atmosphere of negotia-tions can be created. The officers in the meeting appealed to all the unions of workers that should cooperate with the district administration and labor department in preparing congenial atmosphere for negotiations. MSIL, Manesar plant’s worker’s president Sonu Gujjar said, ‘we are fighting for our rights but the company manage-ment and administration shows the face of capitalist. We will not give up the fight.’

US AfPak envoy backs Indian investment in Afghanistan,

strategic pactNew Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS): Terming India’s strategic pact with Afghanistan as a “positive development,” US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman Wednesday backed greater Indian private sector investment in the violence-ravaged country and discussed the situation in the volatile region. Amid Wash-ington’s plunging ties with Islamabad, Grossman discussed the situation in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region with Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai and India’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan Satinder Lambah. He discussed the forthcoming international conference on Afghanistan in Istanbul on Nov 2 and Bonn on Dec 5 and sought India’s support for a successful outcome. In his discussions, he described the stra-tegic partnership pact signed between New Delhi and Kabul last week as a “positive development,” which is seen

by Islamabad as a bid to contain its influence in a country it regards as strategic depth. The operations of ex-tremist networks like the ISI-backed Haqqani network which is suspected of plotting the September 13 attack on the US embassy in Kabul also figured in the discussions, reliable sources said. Grossman also met Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar and is under-stood to have discussed various devel-opmental projects India has under-taken in the war-ravaged nation and how India and the US could cooperate in buttressing capacity building there. The US chief pointsperson for AfPak will be visiting Pakistan Thursday. He said that his talks with officials in In-dia and other countries in the region aimed at finding out if the interna-tional community could find a way to support a stable and prosperous Af-ghanistan.

Gold in India

The old Benjamin Graham adage always holds true. Through the last eight trading sessions, the BSE Sensex has been falling incessantly. What does it bode for the investor? A time to cherry pick good com-panies at reasonable prices. Buying a SBI share at Rs 3000 vs. buying it at Rs 2100, which is better? Where is the downside risk lesser? Examine and see. It doesn’t require a seer to foretell the future. Four quarters down the line, when RBI tames the inflation monster a bit, tackles some of the supply side constraints and the PIG economies are back in the sty or butchered as the case may be, Indian stocks will rise like the phoenix from the ashes and give you good returns.Go and buy front line stocks if you are a conservative and defensive investor — Infosys, TCS, L&T, SBI, IndusInd Bank. And if you are a risk taker, load your truck with JSW Energy, Alok Industries, Karnataka Bank and the likes. Be a patient investor. One year down the line all these stocks would be re-rated by the same brokerages from underweight to overweight and you could make a pile.Philip Fisher, the other finance guru also said that load your truck fully when an opportunity arises. Good busi-nesses are available cheap. It makes sense to identify a good opportunity, research it and then put all your eggs in that basket. And what does one do after that? Watch that basket like a lioness would watch her cubs. Have you ever invested an amount equal to the price of an apartment/house in a single good stock and waited till the house became mortgage free i.e 15 to 20 years normally. Buy a good stock with all your money and then sit tight for 15 years, it will be much more than the house would be. Remember like all good things of life, real pleasure doesn’t come in an instant.Neeraj Varshney

When Stock Prices Fall, Stocks become less Risky

In d i a ’ s centuries old Gold

industry is the largest market for this metal in the world, with imports catering to almost all our needs for jewellery and invest-ment. India’s annual consumption of Gold is as high as 700 tonnes. Our market has traditionally been a market for gold as jewellery, which draws its significance from religious and wedding events and also from the fact that there is a market where more than 300,000 jewellers, mostly small, family-run businesses (a re-port by World Gold Council) operate.

A Brief HistoryGold prices have fluctuated in the

economy like the stock market. In 2008, gold prices went up an all-time high. The imports also plummeted due to an increase in prices and the consequent fall in demand for the metal. There was a decline of 47% in the gold imports that year. However, in 2009, the gold prices slumped, rais-ing concerns among the investors.

Present TrendsOver the last few

years, gold has been shining continuously. The price has remained well above Rs.18000 per 10g. In fact now, over the past few months, it has been more that Rs.20000 per 10g.

Despite the high prices, the de-mand and hence the imports have not been affected as much as they had been in history. Prosperity and higher saving resulting from higher per capita income of Indians are fac-tors driving them to change their perception of gold. With increased per capita incomes of the citizens, the country is able to save more than before. The Indian economy is seeing a growth of about 8% and in 2008 recorded a per capita income rise of more than 10%, according to government data. On an average, Indians save over 30% of their in-come. This gets reflected in the im-provement of investments in gold.

Trends in InvestmentOver the recent years, investors

have closely observed the pattern of gold prices. The prices have not dis-appointed them either. They have become surer that investment in gold is the safest and most profitable op-tion right now. Considering the fact that gold has been on a consistent rise, investment in it provides a kind of insurance cover sure to give good returns!

Traditionally considered compul-sory and to a great extent auspicious, Indians no longer buy gold in the form of jewellery only. This is espe-cially true in the case of investors. The trend has shifted from invest-ment in gold jewellery to investment in gold bars or coins. One of the rea-sons for this preference can be fash-ion criteria. Jewellery tends to get out of fashion soon. A piece of necklace that catches our eye today may not seem attractive at all 5 years down the line. Hence, bars and coins are

bought which can easily be con-verted into jewellery when

needed.Another perspec-

tive to this jewellery demand v/s invest-ment demand is

their signif-icance according to the

social or economic conditions. While jewellery demand will be societal and festival related, investment demand for gold is generally price sensitive.

In a recent development, for the first time, Indians converted propor-tionately more gold into investment than into jewellery. In the quarter that ended in March 2010, percentage net retail investment in gold by Indi-ans has soared past that in jewellery, highlighting the biggest change in the way the yellow metal is used in India.

Considering the economic part of it, taking loans against gold is another fruitful option. Going by the current gold prices, an estimated Rs 30 lakh crore is out of the financial system, which could be put to productive use. Experts say when people bor-row against gold, it can set a chain of productive economic activities and boost demand and consumption in the economy. Banks and NBFCs give loans from 60% to 80% of the total value of gold and can disburse the amount in a day’s time.

So, all in all, investment or taking loans, gold is shining brighter than before and is a safe haven for all-con-sumers or investors.

SINGH TWINS:THE MAKING OF LIVERPOOL

Duplex minds merged in a cultural tango - artists Amrit and Rabindra Singh were born in London and now live in Wirral. They were artists in residence for

the Commonwealth Games, in 2002. They enjoy an international reputation, exhibiting and lecturing in the UK and abroad. At the Smithsonian's Sikh Art Gallery in Washington DC, the inaugural show has 3 works by them. Last week they unveiled their works at Delhi gallery- Art Alive, and what an awakening of genius and enterprise it was.

Over the years their work has included paintings of sports stars such as David Beckham, Venus Williams and Prince Naseem. Their works including `Painting the Town Red and O come All ye Red' have received rave reviews abroad .Their works are like little jewels, narratives that are built around satire and inherently reflective of the contemporary lifestyles of people today. Their clients come from all around the world.

Entwined in the residual rhythms of artistic insight, born of the struggle to find an inven-tive idiom, this is a historic testimony to a pair of twins who dress identically (bangles, jhumkis, kurtas handbags), and work togeth-er- they seem to be soul mates in commun-ion with their art and the world they want to reflect.

`When we were studying Western art his-tory at our University we were actually ap-palled at the hypocricy of the entire system. We learnt about the fathers of Modern Art, interestingly most of them were influenced by

Japanese or Persian painters, the east was an important element in inspiration; and yet we were being told all the time that we could not be influenced by our own heritage.'saidAmrit.

Years ago Francis Newton Souza told me in an inter-view, In art you have to mess around with perceptions, you have to break norms, otherwise how can you cre-ate?'

Souza's words echo through this corridor of thought as you place the creative strategies of the Singh twins in this show.

Fired by the determination to counteract `Western ideals of acceptable art' and inspired by the intricate marvels of Mughal miniatures the Singh twins solo in the capital city of Delhi brings a landmark exhibition that spells and echoes the importance of finding a novel sensibility,a unique creativity and reflecting a curious affair between contem-porary reality and the miniature tradition .

Sometimes in their works there is a sin-gle figure, almost a modern day Aphrodite like symbolism as a sensuous woman with a pendant dangling astride a low slung back, holds a little frame of a man in one hand, and the forget me not like flower in the other.Herodhini billows in the wind and the antique flavoured jewels add a touch of vintage intricacy. The frame is em-bellished on one side by a set of vermillion poppies at the bottom of which sits a red dragon. The moon at the top presents lu-nar influences of astral romance and it is the portrait of the impassioned woman in quest of the eternal wait that positions this work so charmingly between yesterday and today.Singular and significant this work seems more like a classic.Astute critics of their own works the twins maintain every-thing comes through a process of collabo-ration so as to ease out the complexities of contradiction.

Initially put off by western ideaology they took to min-iatures by studying from books and art all over Britain.

According to Rabindra, `Everything was in the mu-seums but nothing in the galleries.'

Other inspirations range from the Catholic iconog-raphy of their convent school days to fairy-tale illustra-tions by Edmund Dulac (Hans Christian Andersen and The Arabian Nights), art nouveau and the Pre-Raphael-ites. Their early works revolved around the family but this show sees an evolution in subject and content that goes past the family.

The show actually revels around spices, flowers and fruits. The story of Liverpool unveils a hallucinatory magic of sorts. It’s almost like a lantern show of Indo western culture. An extraordinary cast of characters ranges from man to girlish maidens in regal finery from swaying dressed up border like processions to brimming fiesta tonalities skim the show. The bodies of their subjects are alive with animated references, their gestures signal a world of mysterious ritual, and the plangent accompaniment of flowers and fruits turns this piece into a fantasy beautifully weird and unpredictably sensual in gaze.

Each work in this show is more like a little tale that gets fabulously staged and expert-ly performed in the detail-ing of borders and the dense wheeling dialogue between movement of subjects and the quality of colourative textur-ing in the density of light, the show reflects the extraordi-nary ability of collaborative and co-operative vision be-tween the two sisters..

So what do they think is the true role of art in the post modern scenario?Art has to move beyond per-

sonal psyches to contemporary characters and contemporary setting and transcend cultural barriers. We are trying to do just that. That is why we call our work Past Modern.’, says Ra-bindra.

(The show runs at ART ALIVE Gallery, PANCHSHEEL)

Their works are like little jewels, narratives that

are built around satire and inherently reflective of the contemporary lifestyles of people today.

The story of Liverpool unveils a

hallucinatory magic of sorts. Its almost like a lantern show of Indo western culture.

It’s a step in the right direction! Don’t wait for a new moon.

The only way to spice up your life is by taking risks!

The start of a new day often brings an impressive glow to the east as colorful sunrise dominates the morning sky. We can’t help but feel inspired whilst observing the spectacle and this brief inspirational mo-ment can transform our attitude toward the day. Something ‘dawns’ on us, putting into perspective how much can happen in the space of a single day. As something ‘dawns’ on you now, prepare to make a significant and well-deserved stride toward a much desired goal.

So for the sake of others, turn that frown upside down!

Enthusiasm is everybody’s secret weapon. We all possess it yet choose more often than not to release it only when we feel it’s appropriate to do so. Some things warrant our enthusiasm, others don’t. Sometimes, enthusiasm transforms into unadulterated passion, so much so that it can be misinter-preted for aggression. Don’t misinterpret someone’s passion toward something as aggression or obstinacy. They really do want what you want.

May 21 - June 20Gemini

We sometimes underestimate the effect of our moods on others. What preoccupies our minds can affect our behavior and others, particularly those closest to us, soon pick up on this. Be aware now of the very positive and encouraging or negative and discouraging influence you can have on certain people. Your clout is much stronger on many levels than you probably realize.

Sept. 23 - Oct. 22Libra

People have different ideas about what con-stitutes ‘heroicness’. We’re all aware of heroic actions done daily by many people yet others believe they deserve recognition and reward for having worked during their lunch hour. You’re not exactly banging a fist on a table now demanding a Hero Biscuit for some-thing you’ve had to do or tolerate but you’d be grateful for some heartfelt acknowledge-ment. It’s coming and from someone whose appreciation means the most to you.

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21Scorpio

When cooking, once too much of an ingredient is added, we sometimes try to compensate by adding more of other ingre-dients! Sometimes though, this works in our favor. We end up creating something unique and equally as tasty. Don’t be too concerned about having overreached yourself in some way now. You might just have set in motion a new process that could make you just as pleased with a result.

Nov. 22 - Dec. 21Sagittarius

Has someone grown a bit too accustomed to your willingness to support them? Possibly. It’s easy enough to do, after all. When some people expect to consistently receive, it often dilutes the need in their mind to reciprocate. If someone’s happy to constantly provide for them, then why should they refuse it? Something between you and another is bit too ‘one-way’ for your liking. The sky intends to address this.

Don’t make the same stupid mistake twice!

The only thing to be worried about is the skeletons in the closet!

Sometimes doing nothing is better than doing something!

Time to introduce a little anarchy!

It’s always better to be safe than stupid!

It’s going to happen, just believe in yourself!

My grandmother had a dog named Sandy. During summer months, Sandy’s fur was a light shade of pink because she never, during her entire lifetime, learned to stay away from skunks and had to be constantly bathed in tomato juice to kill the smell. You’d have thought that after the first painful experi-ence, a lesson would have been learned. Perhaps you ought to recall what lesson you learned previously regarding something you’re considering doing again now.

June 21 - July 22Cancer

They say we regret what we don’t do in life. To a large extent, that’s true but we can all recall having made decisions not to do something and being glad we didn’t. You appear to be considering action you believe to be necessary but carries with it more than one disbenefit to both you and someone else. I strongly suspect that, on this occasion, you’ll soon have a very good reason to feel relieved with not having pursued it.

July 23 - Aug. 22Leo

‘Tendata via’. In case you thought that was the name of a song from ‘The Lion King’, it’s Latin for ‘the way must be tried’. This phrase is worth considering now. Where you suspect you’ve exhausted every option and possibility, there’s scope to try something you haven’t yet dared to attempt. Fortune, they say, favors the brave. Take a chance. Make an effort where you’re convinced you’ll fail and you could be more than pleasantly surprised.

Jan. 20 - Feb. 18Aquarius

It doesn’t take much to encourage, enlighten or motivate us. All we usually want to know is that we’re not wasting valuable time and energy pursuing something that doesn’t justify both. But, we need to allow for some time and energy to be invested before we can decide if more time and…ok, I think I’ll stop there. If you’re finding you’re going round in circles wondering if you’re wasting your time pursuing something, expect reas-surance soon that you’re not!

Feb. 19 - March 20Pisces

As children, we hated closet doors left open at night and knew why it was unwise to let legs dangle off of the edge of beds. Childlike imaginations would run riot as we lay alone in darkness and deafening silence. Eventu-ally, we’d drift off to sleep and then feel a bit daft once our rooms filled with sunlight the next morning. Trust that your current fear is only a trick of the mind and will disappear sooner than you think!

Walking up or down stairways in darkness always requires us caution. So too does fumbling in darkness to find a light switch. We know that, by exercising caution in such situations, we stand a better chance of succeeding safely through investing less effort with the task than if we approached it blindly and franticly. You’re right to believe that a certain situation requires you to be cautious now but don’t succumb to the need to apply any more than is necessary.

1 Yoga has some toe touching exercises. From that a common myth has spread in India that toe touching will help lose fat from the belly.

What does toe touching do? Every time you bend to touch your feet, you stretch your back muscles, and compress your belly. So, your belly fat is getting compressed.

Now, think about an analogy- take a rub-ber ball. Compress it 20 times. Has the rubber reduced? Similarly, by compressing your fat, it doesn’t reduce. You might burn some calories doing this, but that calorie burn is minimal.

2 Potatoes are very healthy vegetables- they’re loaded with energy providing carbohydrates, fiber, protein, iron, Vitamin C and other minerals. They Glycemic Index of a potato are not high.

But potatoes absorb fat, so depending on the cooking process they might absorb the oil/butter. So, it’s the potato concoction that can be fattening, but not the poor spud by itself.

3 Many meats like fish and chicken are high in protein, and low in saturated fat (bad fat). The protein helps to build muscle, which in turn burns calories.

Again, the cooking process might make it fattening. If you eat butter chicken, it’s not the chicken itself that is fattening, but the curry that is loaded with cream and fat.

4 Crunches help you work those abdominal muscles, but not lose fat on that belly. Read on to see why crunches won’t help you get that six pack.

Indulge Yourself

Cultural Night Out

The Typical Night Out

There is nothing more intellectu-ally stimulating than watching

a good play or dance perfor-mance. Just make sure you

read the reviews so as to avoid an argument afterwards!

Ah, what luxury! Imagine spend-ing the first half of the night tasting wines and tucking into a 3- course meal afterwards. Is your mouth watering already?

If none of these options appeal to you and you just want to dance the night away, then dress up to the nines and do

exactly that! We suggest that you start the night with a light dinner and then head over to a club (Most clubs have Ladies

Nights on Thursdays!). The cherry on the cake would be a movie marathon afterwards, granted that you’re not too,

ahem, tired!

We Recommend: The wine bar at Claridges offers wine tastings from Monday to Saturday, 7 pm to 9 pm. Even though you don’t need to book an appointment, we suggest that you call ahead for confirmation just in case.(Tel: 0129-4190 000)

We Recommend: The Aromatherapy Rejuvenating or Relaxa-tion package at Chandan Sparsh, Greater Kailash 2 or the Hibiscus Signature Massage at Spa Hibiscus, Mayur Vihar.

We Recommend: The India Habitat Centre holds a number of cultural events on

a regular basis and the event schedule is available on their official website.

We Recommend: Urban Pind (N Block Market GK 1), Blue Bar (Taj Palace), Route 04 (Khan Market) and 4S (Defence

Colony Market).

Safety Tip: Assign one of your friends or yourself as the “designated (sober) driver” for the night if you plan to drive back home.

Just close your eyes and picture yourself surrounded with sweet-smelling essen-tial oils and a masseuse pressing your shoulders, back, legs... sounds like a dream, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be! There are some great spas in Delhi and because they offer a number of packages, you and your girlfriends are sure to have a great evening.

Staying in with the girls is always fun- what can be more satisfying than watching a good tearjerker or gorging on junk food all night long? However, if you want to step out instead, we suggest the following options-

Need for vocational education can no longer be ignored

A recent report by ASSOCHAM has revealed that there are nearly 300 million people of

the 18-50 age group who are unemployed because they do not have skills sets

suitable to the today’s market. The population of India is growing by 29 million per year and out of this 14.5 per cent don’t enroll themselves for any kind of

education. The 10.6 million educated unemployed youth with 8 million dropouts can

be employed by providing skill based vocational training in trades like electrician, automobile, fabrication, food processing and in more than 150 other similar trades.

The above pointers imply that while the world is ageing, India is grow-ing younger by the day. This may be good news, but the truth is that we can only reap the benefits of a young demographic dividend if the dozens of training institutes mushrooming in India can deliver an intense vocational focus in education and training and produce skilled manpower .

“The challenge here for the country is to ensure consistent quality of infrastructure and delivery, wider industry participation, social respect for skilled manpower and efficient coordination among delivery agencies for regulation and monitoring,” the E&Y report said.

Elaborating on the problems of a swelling population like India, Dilip Chenoy, CEO and MD, Na-tional Skill Development Corpora-tion (NSDC), says, “First, while we are imparting skills to five million people a year, eight million people enter the workforce annually. Secondly, while training organiza-tions provide people with skills, these are however not aligned with industry needs or entrepreneurial. Thirdly, when candidates complete the skill development programme, the qualifications do not match the occupational standards .”

2011 2020INDIA :

CHINA, EUROPE & JAPAN :50% of population under age 25.

shortage of global skilled manpower by 56.5 million.

india to have a surplus of 47 millionaverage age between 30 & 41.

The current capacity of skill development programmes is just 3.1 million, while India has set an ambitious target of providing skill based training to 500 million people by 2022. At present there is still a severe shortage of trained and skilled technicians as only 1.5 to 2 million (2%) students in the age group of 15-25 are enrolled in VET (Vocational Education and Training) every year, as against 80 per cent in Europe and 60 per cent in East Asian nations like Malay-sia, Korea and Taiwan.

the e&y report

According to the national skill development policy

According to the E&Y report, about 67% of organizations in India are facing difficulty in filling up jobs against a world average of 34%. “In a scenario where 80% of the workforce in rural and urban India does not possess any identifiable marketable skills, and 75% of new job opportu-nities to be created will be skill based, it becomes essential for the country to evolve and develop a robust delivery mecha-nism on priority,” the E&Y report said.

- Juhi Dhingra

The biggest problem in India is that Indians tend to prefer degrees to vocational skills. Additionally, the industry does not go by mandates such as certification. With both skilled and unskilled people being hired, learners just don’t see why they need a certification.

SportsBengal cricket on sticky wicket

over India-England tie

Kolkata, Oct 12 (IANS) The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), which is awaiting the public works depart-ment's (PWD) no-objection certifi-cate (NOC) to host the India-England One-Day International cricket match at the Eden Gardens ground Oct 25, on Wednesday dubbed the clearance procedure as clumsy and sought sup-port from the state government.

"Kolkata (Eden Gardens) is slated to host several international cricket

matches. We are looking for the sup-port from the government. We are following the due procedures and visiting various offices as and when required. But we think there is no need to make the formalities so clum-sy. Making them a bit simpler would be appreciated," CAB joint secretary Biswarup Dey told media persons.

A section of the media on Tuesday reported that the department had de-nied the NOC to the CAB for the Oct

25 match."It has not been denied. Earlier, we

got the NOC during the World Cup matches organized here. An NOC is valid for one year so where is the need for another one?" Dey asked.

PWD Minister Subrata Bakshi, when asked about the matter, told IANS: "I am not the one concerned to answer this."

Morkel promises to take up challenge to Warner

Sydney, Oct 12 (IANS) South African pace spearhead Morne Morkel has promised to take up his challenge to Australian open-er and his Indian Premier League (IPL) teammate David Warner when the team from down under visits the rainbow country.

Australia is to play two Tests and three ODIs in South Africa. Before that the two teams play two Twenty20s, beginning Oct 13 in Cape Town.

Warner is in a red hot form and is fresh from blazing back-to-back centuries in the Champions League tournament in India.

mate in Delhi Daredevils, jok-ingly dared the Australian to try his switch-hitting against his 150 km deliveries.

"Let's see who can win that bat-tle." he said.

Morkel also said Warner will find it tough to convert his feats on the sub-continent in Cape Town.

Australian vice-captain Shane Watson, however, feels Warner has grown in confidence as an international player and sees no reason why he can't repeat his exploits in the two-match T20 series. UB Group sells stake in F1 team

An opera performance which raised the oomph factor in the show deserves special mention. The models sashayed down the ramp in striking avant garde designs rooted in elegant silhouettes and intricate designs. The striking amalgamation of futuristic designs left the audience

asking for more. The collection was a blend of feminity and elegance with a range of short dresses, jackets and skirts for women and skinny trousers, printed blazers for men. her as saying. "I have already been exercising but what I need is a little push to help me start eating sensibly. Mums really need to take time for themselves and get to a place where they are happy with their body again. We should not put it off because we deserve more than that. Ashok Kumar: The undervalued

legacy of a renaissance actor

Hindi cinema has perhaps rarely seen another actor with the refined, understated craftsmanship of Kumudlal Kunjilal Ganguly, better known by his screen name, Ashok Kumar. Here was an actor who straddled Hindi cinema from the mid-1930 to the 1990s, who pioneered the concept of 'natural acting' at a time when theatrical acting was the norm.As Hindi cinema's first su-perstar, he, nevertheless, took box office risks. "Kismet", in which he played a negative role, ran for three years in Kolkata's Roxy Theater. The film's record was broken by "Sholay" 32 years later. It was Ashok Kumar who introduced the suave, West-ernized hero to Hindi films, puffing at his trademark cigarette, a habit he acquired to keep his hands occupied on camera. Years later he won the National Award for his role as an aging prisoner in Hrishkesh Mukherjee's "Aa-shirwad", the film in which he also sang Hindi cinema's first rap song, "Rail Gadi, Rail Gadi".He earned the title of the "grand old man of Hindi cinema", and for good reason. Ashok Kumar's career spanned an entire era in Hindi films beginning shortly after the advent of talking films.Yet, barely 10 years after his death, even as Ashok Kumar's birth centenary is celebrated October 13, he remains an undervalued - some may even say forgotten - actor. In fact, one of his daughters laments that she is better known today as Kishore Kumar's niece.By Ashok Easwaran

I've been dreaming about shoes, mil-lions of them but I wanted the initial six to eight pairs to be everything I've ever dreamed of," contactmuisc.com quoted Cole as saying in a promotional video. Cole is said to have been involved with every aspect of the design in-cluding the color schemes, fabrics and style. The designs will be available from December. "I like glamour, but I'm aware not everyone wants to wear a high heel all the time. I haven't gone too far down the glamour line," she said. The websites creative officer, Juliet Warkentin, said they are "thrilled" to work with Cole. "Cheryl is the style icon and is amazingly warm, a quality that has made her the nation's favorite. We believe that the launch will have a huge fashion impact; establishing fashion's greatest influencer as a major force in fashion design and further democratising fashion," said Warkentin.
