Dear beloved in Christ, The Lord enabling us to enter in to a new month of 2017. Lets give thanks to God for his abundance of grace and guidance which He is pouring upon our life.
September 3rd we are observing as the Education Sunday, Mothers help us with our natural birth. Teachers help us to be twice born. The first birth is the gift of God to us; the second birth is our gift to the universe. The word 'genius' is de-rived from Latin, gignere which means 'to give birth to' or ' to bring in to being, create, produce'. I salute all those who are engaged in the mission to create and to give birth to our true genius-something that we are born to do.
“CAN YOU TEACH A ZEBRA SOME ALGEBRA” the book written by De-bashish Chatterjee is about learning, teaching and being. In one of its chapter says about a geography teacher was asking the class to memorise this dubious lesson, 'Nile is a mountain that is situated in Egypt.' The headmaster, on hearing this, confronted the teacher and asked him if he really knew that Nile was a riv-er and not a mountain. The teacher shot back saying, ' For the pittance of a sala-ry I get, it does not matter whether Nile is a river or a mountain. 'To cap it, he said, 'Nile will be transformed into a river as soon as my salary is raised.'
Like all the services teaching has become a kind of a pastime for some, rather than a passionate pursuit. The most highly regarded leaders of human societies for centuries have been teachers. These teachers were the channels through which the DNA of human civilisation was transferred from one generation to another. If the Macedonian hero Alexander had a teacher in Aristotle, the Indian king Chandragupta Maurya had a teacher in Chanakya. These teachers taught not because they could not do anything else, but because nothing else was more valuable to their societies than what these wise teachers taught.
Great teaching is more like a craft than a technique. To evoke curiosity in the learner, to care for the learner and to take the learner on a journey of discovery are some of the most critical elements of this craft. A memorable journey is not when you are forced to take the trip but when the trip takes you to these en-chanting spaces that you have never visited before. The Mahabharata the Indian epic says a story in which Yaksha, a demigod, was having a Q&A session with Yudhishthira- the eldest of the five Pandava princes, who was known for his commitment to truth.
A set of questions of Yaksha to Yudhishthira was. 'What is the best of all laudable things? What is the most valuable of all possessions? What is the highest of all gains? is the And what best of all kinds of happiness?
Yudhishthira responded, 'The best of all laudable things is skill; the best of all pos-sessions is knowledge; the best of all gains is health; and contentment is the best of all kinds of happiness.'
Teachers bridge the gap between our past and our future. They anchor the values of our society. They ensure continuity of cultures in times of change. Teachers stitch together knowledge of generations into the tapestry of our times.
Be a disciple of the ultimate Guru Jesus of Nazareth.
Your Achen, Sandeep Oommen
