The Delaware Nature Society, a nonprofit membership or-
ganization, fosters understanding, appreciation and enjoyment
of the natural world through education, preserves ecologically
significant areas, and advocates stewardship and conserva-
tion of natural resources.
The Delaware Nature Society (DNS) owns or manages more
than 1900 acres of wildlife habitat and education preserves. A
farm education program is taught at our 352-acre Coverdale
Farm. Abbott’s Mill’s historic, water powered gristmill is pre-
served and operational. The Society’s Burrows Run and Flint
Woods Preserves in New Castle County and Marvel Saltmarsh
and Cedar Bog Preserves in Sussex County provide extensive
field study opportunities.
DNS has been chosen to operate the Dupont Environmental
Education Center under construction at the Russell W. Peter-
son Urban Wildlife Refuge on the Wilmington riverfront, sched-
uled to open in October 2009, and is in its third year of
operations at Cooch-Dayett Mills in Newark. Unlike many na-
ture centers that offer environmental education only, the
Delaware Nature Society has Natural Resource Conservation
and Advocacy components also. In addition, it is the Delaware
affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), offering input
on national issues that concern citizens in our region.
Our nature centers and preserves serve as regional hubs for
environmental activities in every season. Individuals, school
students, teachers and community groups increase their
awareness of the natural world through our programs.

32008 Annual Report
Dear Members and Friends:
Over this past year of change and transition, the Delaware Nature Society made great strides in fulfilling its
mission to foster understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the natural world through education; preserve
ecologically significant areas; and advocate stewardship and conservation of natural resources. Following are
some highlights that stand out in our minds:
Fundraising Remained Strong in ‘08
The Delaware Nature Society’s Annual Giving fund reached a total just shy of our all-time high. In 2008,
$254,115.26 was raised from 828 donors. Additionally, our Capital Development Program raised $506,531.40
for the Coverdale Farm expansion project including the renovations of the Education/Community Supported
Agriculture (CSA) building.
Reaching a New Audience
“The Nature of Delaware” is the Delaware Nature Society’s blog featuring Field Trips, Outdoor Observations,
and Environmental Topics launched in 2008. It is here that we will update recent field trips and show photos of
our adventures, reveal interesting natural spectacles we come across, discuss the environment and conservation in Delaware, and generally blog about
fun and exciting happenings within the Delaware Nature Society.
Coverdale Farm Expansion Continues
At Coverdale Farm the Farm Operations Center (containing farm equipment storage space, a small office area, and a nutrient management shed) was
completed along with the site work which included a septic system and roadways. Farmyard buildings for chickens and pigs were built and made handi-
capped accessible for program participants. We are excited about our progress that continues at the Farm that will allow us to start a Community Sup-
ported Agriculture (CSA) program in 2010.
Planning for Operations at the Riverfront
The Delaware Nature Society continues planning for the opening and the start of operations at the DuPont
Environmental Education Center in Wilmington. The center opening is scheduled for October 10, 2009 and
we are looking forward to programming showcasing where the city, river and marsh meet. The Center, owned
by the Riverfront Development Corporation, is on the edge of the 212-acre Russell W. Peterson Urban
Wildlife Refuge that adjoins the tidal Christina River, which is home to many species of amphibians, birds,
mammals, fish, reptiles and native plants.
Furthering our Programming at Cooch-Dayett Mills
Through a partnership with the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, the Delaware Nature Soci-
ety continued operations at Cooch-Dayett Mills in Newark. With programming provided by DNS, Cooch-
Dayett Mills features education for families, school classes and the public. The historic roller mills, along with
natural features of the site, become the classroom.
Reviewing the accomplishments of 2008, we are truly excited about the prospects for the future including Coverdale Farm growth, Cooch-Dayett Mills
programming, our expansion to the Wilmington Riverfront and preparing for Community Supported Agriculture, all enabling us to reach new audiences.
Realizing none of it would be possible without our most important and vital assets: our dedicated volunteers (close to 1,000 contributing a value of
$363,000 in service!), our integral staff, and the committed leadership of our Board of Directors, we wish to take this opportunity to offer our most sincere
thanks and appreciation. We look forward to continuing our progress in the future!

Education HighlightsACHIEVEMENTS AND GROWTH IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS
Since its 1964 founding, the Delaware Nature Society has reached more than 1.3 million
people of all ages through its education programs. The Nature Society’s Education De-
partment includes three well-developed program areas:
- members/seasonal: adults, children and families
- schools: teachers and student classes
- public groups: scouts, faith-based and community organizations
In 2008, the Education Department welcomed more than 52,100 students, members and
guests to our programs and included these distinguished highlights:
MEMBERS
Maintained members program participation (over 3,100) between 2007 and 2008 in the
current economic situation.
Ashland Nature Center
· Continued a strong teenager presence with approximately 80 regularly involved through Teen Naturalists, Young Water-
fowlers, and Summer Camp Counselors. Teen Naturalists went on a 35-mile canoeing adventure in the Adirondacks.
· The third annual Naturalist Certification Series had 25 adults enrolled. School teachers, DNS Teacher Naturalists, staff and
members graduate after participating in 16 sessions and the production of a detailed naturalist notebook.

Education Highlights
Natural Resources Conservation HighlightsThrough the Delaware Nature Society’s Natural Resources Conservation (NRC) Depart-ment, individuals are helping to protect and restore wildlife habitat, monitor and improvelocal water quality, preserve open space and natural areas, and raise a strong voice forthe environment at the local, state and national level. In 2008, the Delaware Nature Soci-ety was pleased to celebrate the following accomplishments:
NO PLACE LIKE HOMESince moving its headquarters to Ashland in 1976, the Delaware Nature Society hasplaced high priority on the permanent preservation of the Red Clay Valley. The valley in-cludes spectacular natural areas that sustain an abundance of plants and animals andcontain some of the richest forest in the Red Clay Creek watershed. The Red Clay Valley isbecoming an island in our ever-more developed landscape. The Delaware Nature Societyis committed to ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy the spectacular re-sources just outside our door. Over the last year DelDOT Secretary Carolann Wicks for-mally approved the Corridor Management Plan for the 28-road network that composes theRed Clay Valley Scenic Byway. The Corridor Management Plan describes the goals, strategies, andresponsibilities for conserving and enhancing the Valley’s cultural, scenic, historic, and natural resources. In addition, the Delaware Na-ture Society sought Important Bird Area status for the Red Clay Valley, which was accepted at the State level. This recognition makesofficial what we have known for a long time - the Red Clay Valley is especially rich in bird species and biodiversity in general.
RAISING THE PROFILE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUESIn celebration of Earth Day 2008, the Delaware Nature Society hosted a gubernatorial candidates forum focused on environmental is-sues. Approximately 130 individuals attended the event to hear the perspectives of the candidates. More than 60 questions weresubmitted by Delaware Nature Society members and the public which were posted on the DNS website with an audio recording of theevent. Over the last year, the Delaware Nature Society and conservation partners worked collectively to halt the Army Corps of Engi-neers plan to deepen the main channel of the Delaware River, to support comprehensive energy policy and climate change legislation, and to maintain adequate funding for open space and farmland preservation initiatives.
WATERSHEDS OF DELAWAREOne of the Delaware Nature Society’s hallmarks since its inception in 1964 has been the ability to inspire people to take action to helpprotect the environment. Technical Monitoring is one of the Society’s most successful citizen science programs and is a nationally-recognized example of the acceptance and use of citizen science water quality data by the Delaware Department of Natural Re-sources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Thanks to a DuPont “Clear into theFuture” Natural Resource Conservation and Restoration Grant, the Delaware Nature Society was able to upgrade our website andpost Technical Monitoring data, graphs, site photographs and maps. This information is now just a click away for school students andwatershed groups throughout the region.
GARDENING FOR THE ENVIRONMENTThe Delaware Nature Society’s Backyard Wildlife Habitat™ program, offered through our affiliate partnership with the National WildlifeFederation, provides educational resources and one-on-one consultation for landowners interested in providing food, water, cover andplaces for wildlife to raise young, while implementing resource conservation measures in their backyards. Rain barrels have quicklybecome one of the most popular backyard conservation measures. In 2008, the Delaware Nature Society hosted several “build yourown” rain barrel workshops that generated waiting lists of more than 200 individuals.
EXPANDING THE RIBBON OF GREENIn 2007, the Delaware Nature Society teamed with the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife to enroll their collective 313 acres in Sus-sex County into the State’s System of Nature Preserves. The Milford Millponds Nature Preserve achieved permanent preservation ofthe natural and cultural landscape surrounding Abbott’s Mill and Abbott’s Mill Nature Center. Over the last year, volunteers from theMilford High School cross country team helped to maintain portions of the Milford Millponds Nature Preserve. Additional lands, total-ing approximately 60 acres, will be donated to the Delaware Nature Society and added to the Preserve in 2009.

Land & Biodiversity HighlightsPROGRESS AND IMPROVEMENTS REALIZEDThe Delaware Nature Society, which owns or manages more than 1,900 acres ofwildlife habitat and educational preserves, accomplished several productive biodiversitymanagement projects in 2008:
- Baltimore Checkerspot butterflies continue to flourish at the BurrowsRun Preserve - only one of two known location for this species in Delaware
- Native tree buffer was expanded along the Burrows Run- Sharp-shinned Hawk nested and fledged young at the Ashland Nature
Center for the second year in a row– this is the only known nestinglocation for this species in Delaware
- Extensive invasive alien plant control projects were conducted at theAshland Nature Center, Burrows Run Preserve and Abbotts Mill
- Cooperated with University of Delaware’s Mile-a-minute Plant researchthat was conducted at the Burrows Run Preserve
- Land management continues at Cooch-Dayett Mills – trails andteaching areas are maintained on a regular basis
- The Ashland landscape project continued with native trees and shrubs being installed- Completed construction of new trail through Succession Woods and installed Succession Trail markers- A vernal pool was created at the Abbott’s Mill Morton Property
MIDDLE RUN VALLEY NATURAL AREA WOODLAND RESTORATION PROJECTThe Delaware Nature Society created an overall land and biodiversity management plan for Middle Run Natural Area. In 2008, the five-year project continued to expand the habitat restoration efforts at this site - two successful woodland restoration plantings (1,000trees planted) were completed in the Natural Area. Each of these plantings utilized more than 100 volunteers. Invasive alien vegetationremoval projects were undertaken. Other activities were the creation of a new trail, environmental educational programs and biodiver-sity surveys, including a bi-weekly bird survey. (136 species to date)
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT· Coverdale Farm Yard (including pig and poultry sheds) was completed and construction planning began for the
Education & Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) building renovation· Floors in the two main bathrooms of the Ashland lodge were replaced· The Dilworth house, part of Burrows Run Preserve, underwent extensive exterior stone wall repair including the
restoration of a historic stone smoke house- At Abbott’s Mill, the house on the Morton Property was removed and an out building was renovated for use as a
teaching area- A new electric generator was installed at the Ashland Lodge- The Mortenson House, near White Clay Creek State Park, had exterior work completed

Development HighlightsJOINING THE E-TIMES AND CONSERVING RESOURCES
The Development Department is committed to increasing the Delaware Nature Society’s
use of electronic mediums in our on-going effort to reduce consumption and conserve
our resources. To that end, 2008 saw a number of highlights in these efforts:
- Implemented the creation of an online system (built by Lane Services,
LLC) to process real-time transactions linked directly to the data man-
agement system for membership, donations and program registration
- Launched the use of the Informz email system to more efficiently com-
municate and distribute brochures, programs and event information
and announcements
- Launched “The Nature of Delaware” the Delaware Nature Society’s
staff blog featuring Field Trips, Outdoor Observations, and Environmen-
tal Topics
- As a conservation measure, reduced printed materials by shortening
program description lengths to print fewer brochure pages, as well as
eliminating the printing of some publications and flyers
As Membership gifts and Program fees do not provide sufficient funds for all that DNS
accomplishes, our fundraising efforts continued to be a focus:
· Annual Giving reached a total just shy of our all-time high. In 2008, $254,115.26 was raised from 828 donors.
· The Capital Development Program raised $506,531.40 for the Coverdale Farm expansion project including the renova-
tions for the Education/Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) building.
In the Development Department’s role of providing support to our education and conservation programs, it will continue striving to
find new ways to bring the activities of the Delaware Nature Society to more people, and creating more opportunities to educate
about natural history and the importance of protecting the environment.
Contributions Note
Thank you to the thousands of members and donors upon whose generous contributions allow the Delaware Nature Society to continue
the work we do. Through our programs and activities, contributions are used in many areas, but we always strive to spend these gifts
wisely. In fact, for two years running, we have been awarded a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator (an independent charity evaluat-
ing organization) for sound fiscal management and we are very proud of this accomplishment. There are many ways to give –
membership, annual giving, memorial gifts, and contributions to special funds. Every gift is needed and important, regardless of size.
Donors with annual combined donations of $500 or more receive an invitation to our Patrons’ Event, held in 2008 at the Wyeth’s Point
Lookout Farm.
We have combined all 2008 giving for a cumulative per donor total and list contributor names in the appropriate giving levels. We
strived to ensure that all donors are represented and in the appropriate level. If there is an error or omission, contact Linda Chambers,
Associate Director, Development & Marketing at 302-239-2334, ext. 103 and please accept our most sincere apologies.
Linda Chambers, Associate Director
2008 Annual Report 9
Financial SummaryDelaware Nature Society concluded 2008 with a positive operating result that is over-
shadowed by negative investment performance. Mid-year fiscal concerns were pro-
actively addressed with budgetary adjustments that enabled a $30,100 operating surplus
(prior to the annual transfer to the Property, Plant & Equipment Fund.) The endowment
accounts lost more than $3,000,000 in market value since the beginning of the year. The
Nature Society’s master portfolio performance decreased 16.7% compared to a negative
27.2% for the blended index. The lost market value will mostly impact future fiscal years
in determining draws for operations. Since the 2009 draw calculation was based on val-
ues up to September 30, 2008 this decline will more dramatically affect our 2010 budget.
The current economic climate drove efforts to reduce 2008 costs and budget for 2009 very
conservatively. However, annual giving contributions, program participation levels and ex-
pansion to the DuPont Environmental Education Center will be key in 2009 to sustaining
and/or growing the service provided by the Delaware Nature Society.
