Welcome!Welcome to our 10th Annual Sale!

It is hard to believe that this is the tenth year of our annual sale. Back in 2010 we made the decision to move from selling bulls private treaty to offering them in an annual sale. Several years ago we added females to the sale and this year we can confidently say that we have dug deeper than ever into the replacement pens to offer you our best set of bred heifers ever. Last year we talked about the challenges that 2018 brought and looked forward to 2019 getting back to more normal weather patterns and markets. Well that didn’t necessarily go as we hoped! But challenges also bring opportunity and we feel our offering this year represents a great opportunity for our customers to move their herds forward by capitalizing on the genetics we are offering in the bulls and females selling. In order to remain viable in the beef industry today, producers must put even more emphasis on economically important traits such as feed efficiency, fertility, sound-ness, performance and calving ease. Today’s Herefords are more on target than ever in providing producers the traits they need to improve their bottom line. Combine this with the added benefit of hybrid vigor gained by using Hereford genetics on black cows and it is truly time to “Come Home to Herefords”. The bulls and heifers offered here are the products of many years of emphasizing a balanced breeding program focusing on cattle with acceptable birth weights that will perform, have desirable carcass traits and come from sound, good uddered functional cows. Again this year, many of the bulls selling have GE-EPDs (Genomic Enhanced EPDs). GE EPDs provide the latest technology available to have a bull genetically tested to obtain the highest accuracy possible in their EPDs, giving buyers a higher level of confidence that their bull will do the job they want. Current EPD’s will be updated on all the cattle selling on sale day.You will also notice many of the bulls are designated with the $CHB logo. This designation signifies that the bull is in the top 50% of the breed for producing feeder cattle that will excel in the economically relevant traits of gain, feed efficiency and carcass merit when mated to Angus cows. To help you with this early sale date we will keep all the bulls on feed at Delaney Herefords free of charge until May 1, 2020. Prior to that date we will gather yearling weights and carcass data at no charge to the buyer. All the bulls will be semen tested and fully guaranteed. Many of the bulls cataloged will be members of our Denver carload. If you can’t make the sale feel free to call one of us or the sale staff for assistance or you can bid on Live Auctions the day of the sale. Thank you to all of our customers for your past purchases and the confidence you have shown in our program. We look forward to working with you in the future!

AN EXPLANATION OF EPDSCalving Ease – Direct (CE) - CE EPD is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. For example, if sire A has a CE EPD of 6 and sire B has a CE EPD of -2, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would be born with an 8% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s calves.Birth Weight (BW) - BW EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease and is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a BW EPD of 3.6 and sire B has a BW EPD of 0.6, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would come 3 lb. heavier at birth when compared to sire B’s calves. Larger BW EPDs usually, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. The figure in parentheses found after each EPD is an accuracy value or reliability of the EPD.Weaning Weight (WW) - WW EPD is an estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a WW EPD of 60 and sire B has a WW EPD of 40, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 20 lb. heavier at weaning when compared to sire B’s calves.Yearling Weight (YW) - YW EPD is an estimate of post-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a YW EPD of 100 and sire B has a YW EPD of 70, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 30 lb. heavier at a year of age when compared to sire B’s calves.Maternal Milk (MM) - The milking ability of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability. Daughters of the sire with a +14 MM EPD should produce progeny with 205-day weights averaging 24 lb. more (as a result of greater milk production) than daughters of a bull with a MM EPD of -10 lb. (14 minus -10.0 = 24 lb.). This difference in weaning weight is due to total milk production during the entire lactation.Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) - MCE EPD predicts how easily a sires daughters will calve at 2 years of age and is measured on a percentage. For example, if sire A has a MCE EPD of 7 and sire B has a CE EPD of -3, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s daughters would calve with a 10% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s daughters.Mature Cow Weight (MCW) - The MCW EPD was designed to help breeders select sires that will either increase or decrease mature size of cows in the herd. The trait was developed after years of cow weight data collection and the EPD relates directly to the maintenance requirements of a cow herd. An example of how the MCW EPD allows breeders to compare sires: If sire A has a MCW EPD of 100 and sire B has an EPD of 85, then you would expect the females of sire A, if mated to similar cows, to be 15 lb. heavier at mature size.Udder Suspension (US) - Scores range from 9 (very tight) to 1 (very pendulous) and represent assessments of udder support. Weak udder suspension results in pendulous udders that make it difficult for a calf to nurse. Weak suspension in the udder indicates a lack of support in the ligament that ties the udder to the cow’s body wall. Over time, weakness in this ligament will allow the udder to hang down too far from the body and may subject the udder to serious problems and increased potential for injury. UDDR EPDs are reported on the scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a UDDR EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a UDDR EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score better udder suspension in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B.Teat size (TS) - Scores range from 9 (very small) to 1 (very large, balloon shaped) and are subjective assessments of the teat length and circumference. Oversized teats are difficult for newborn calves to nurse, and the calf may not receive adequate colostrum. This could lead to a higher incidence of scours or decreased immunity levels in the newborn calf. TEAT EPDs are reported on the scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a teat size EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a teat size EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score smaller teat size in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B.Scrotal Circumference (SC) - Measured in centimeters and adjusted to 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate of fertility. It is related to the bull’s own semen quanti-ty and quality, and is also associated with age at puberty of sons and daughters. Larger SC EPDs suggest younger age at puberty. Yearling sons of a sire wth a .7 SC EPD should have yearling scrotal circumference measurements that average 0.7 centimeters (cm) larger than progeny by a bull with an EPD of 0.0 cm. In the Hereford genetic analysis, a multiple-trait model was used for scrotal circumference. Weaning weight was used as a predictor variable to increase the prediction accuracy of SC EPDs. Therefore, an animal with a weaning weight EPD should also have a SC EPD.Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF) - The AHA’s new Sustained Cow Fertility EPD (SCF) is a prediction of a cow’s ability to continue to calve from three years of age through twelve years of age, given she calved as a two-year-old. The EPD is expressed as a deviation in the proportion of the ten-possible calving’s to twelve years old expressed as a probability. For example, the daughters of a bull with a 30 EPD would have the genetic potential to have one more calf by age twelve then the daughters from a bull with a 20 EPD. In other words, the daughters from the 30 EPD bull would have a 10% greater probability of having one more calf than the bull with a 20 EPD. This is equivalent to saying that the daughters are 10% more likely to remain in the herd to age 12.Dry Matter Intake (DMI) - The Dry Matter Intake EPD predicts the daily consumption of pounds of feed. For example, if sire A has a DMI EPD of 1.1 and sire B has a DMI EPD of 0.1, you would expect sire B’s progeny, if comparably mated, to consume on average 1 pound of feed less per day.Carcass Weight (CW) - Carcass weight is a beneficial trait when considering the impact that pounds have relative to end product value. At the same age constant endpoint, sires with higher values for carcass weight will add more pounds of hot carcass weight compared to sires with lower values for carcass weight. For example, if sire A has a CW EPD of 84 and sire B has a CW EPD 64, then you would expect the progeny of sire A, if harvested at the same age constant endpoint, to have a 20-lb. advantage in terms of hot carcass weight.Rib Fat (FAT) - The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12th-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with low, or negative FAT EPDs are expected to produce leaner progeny than sires with higher EPDs. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.Ribeye Area (REA) - REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with rela-tively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better-muscled and higher percentage yielding slaughter progeny than will sires with lower REA EPDs. Ultrasound measure-ments are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.Marbling (MARB) - MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Breeding cattle with higher MARB EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) - The Baldy Maternal Index is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Hereford x Angus cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards Certified Hereford Beef. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females. There is a slightly positive weight on Weaning Weight, Mature Cow Weight and Milk which accounts for enough growth but ensures females do not increase inputs. There is some negative emphasis on Dry Matter Intake, but a positive weighting on Carcass Weight which is anticipated to provide profitability from finishing of non-re-placement. females and castrated males. Marbling and Rib-eye Area are also positively weighted to keep the harvested progeny successful for CHB. This index is geared to identify Hereford bulls that will be profitable when used in a rotational cross with mature commercial Angus cows. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) - The Certified Hereford Beef Index is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows and all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase. This index has significant weight on Carcass Weight to ensure profit on the rail. As well there is a positive weighting for Average Daily Gain along with a negative weighting on Dry Matter Intake to ensure efficient pounds of growth in the finishing phase. Keep in mind, this production system takes advantage of complimentary breeding with the commercial Angus cow. Although Marbling is weighted positively in this index, a positive weighting for Rib-eye Area and a negative weighting for Back Fat are a greater priority in this index to allow for optimum end-product merit. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that no replacement heifers are being retained.

Lot 1 starts out a string of three full brothers that are next level good. We often dis-cuss which bull is our favorite, but never land on the same one. Luckily, we don’t have to decide - that is up to you. 7G is the low birth weight bull of the flush, but may have the most topside muscle shape. He compliments that with a bold rib cage and a flexible set of feet and legs down low. His dam, 45C, is the former high selling live lot in the 2016 National Hereford Sale in Denver and dam of the Lot X embryo package. His sire ,63E, was the anchor in our 2018 Reserve Champion Carload. A full brother and sister are set to sell in Denver 2020 and another full sister was the high selling female in our 2019 Online Sale. This mat-ing combines our very best cow families that are stacked with generations of great uddered, high producing females. Consistency and quality are bred into these bulls and it has proven itself. We believe they not only possess the tools to be standouts themselves, but will give their progeny the advantages necessary to excel in their own contemporary groups. Top 5% of the breed for M&G, US, CW, and REA; top 10% for WW, M, and Marb.

Lot 2 is the biggest outlined, stoutest featured bull of this flush. Not only was he one of the heaviest calves weaned, but he hasn’t stopped since. This masculine tank is a performance freak! What is really impressive is with all the mass, muscle, and body he possesses, he handles it on a sound set of feet and legs and has all the look and presence from the side. If that doesn’t grab your attention check out this guys EPD profile, his birth to yearling spread is incredible and he’s in the top 1% in the breed for 6 traits! This bull does it all! If you are looking for a homozygous polled bull that can sire calves that naturally draw your attention with look, presence, and style; as well as shape, pigment, and the structural integrity that sets them up for the long haul, 21G is the answer. He was a favorite of many top cattleman this summer. This shapely rascal is ideal in terms of his feet and leg structure, he’s round ribbed, bold bodied and has a killer look from the side. Add in his balanced EPDs and pigmented eyes and he comes together as an all around herd sire that can move a program in the right direction. This mating combines our very best cow families that are stacked with generations of great uddered, high producing fe-males. Consistency and quality are bred into these bulls and it has proven itself. We believe they not only possess the tools to be standouts themselves, but will give their progeny the advantages necessary to excel in their own contemporary groups. Top 5% of the breed for SC, M&G, TS, CW, and REA; top 10% for WW, M, US, and CHB.

After seeing 11B raise our herd sire Stud 63E, the high seller in our 2018 Annual Sale and sire of Lots 1-5, we knew we had to replicate that mating. We were not disappointed in the results! These cattle excel in terms of their performance. They are big topped, deep bodied bulls that are excellent footed. They have a lineup of females stacked in their pedigree to ensure you are left with hard working, good looking cows that will positively impact your bottom line. Their dam, 11B boasts a WW Ratio of 112.3 on 3 calves. This mating is proven.Maternal brothers to Lots 21, 38 and 65.Top 1% of the breed for Milk and M&G; top 5% SC and CED.

Not only will he sire excellent females, but his male offspring should be scale pounders as well. 39G himself posted one of the heaviest weaning weights, add in the fact that he is safe to use on heifers and homozygous polled, and his value continues to climb. Dam of Lots 13-15, 45, and 61 • SPH 12W VALENTINE 2Z

A staple in our bull and female sales the last few years have been progeny of 33Z. His progeny, no matter the mating, have consistently been in the top end of our calf crop year after year and Lots 13-15 are continuing that legacy. Their dam has been a model female having produced a carload bull each year she has been flushed. Added consistency, along with a great spread of EPD’s means profit for your cow herd. All heifer bulls, full pigment.Maternal brothers to Lots 45 and 61.

LOT 16Here is the first son of Munson to sell. Very balanced numbers with an excellent birth to yearling spread in his EPD’s. His dam is a beautiful cow that does a great job of producing high quality calves. She has a picture perfect udder and this guy has udder and teat EPD’s in the top 10% of the breed. He is super deep, thick and soft made with moderate frame size and an extremely attractive profile. This bull can be used on heifers without sacrificing quality and he should leave you with a great set of females. Owned with our good friends Mike and Mavis Craig.

Another son of Munson, he has had a rough life. In early June just after going out to grass we lost his mother to hardware. He was not put on a foster dam but left to fend for himself at just over 3 months of age. His mother was a beautiful daughter of 719T out of Violet, the dam of Cracker Jack. She was heavy milking with an excellent quality udder. As a 3 month old calf I felt he had as much potential as any calf at our farm. The setback took him out of contention for the carload but as time goes by I believe he has tremendous potential. He is stout made, correct and has that clean fronted attractive look. He carries a balanced set of EPD’s with CHB$ in the top 5% of the breed.

Excellent heifer bull. If this bull’s pedigree wasn’t already in so many of our cows there wouldn’t be a chance he would leave. We have retained every female out of his mother, 17A, who is a foundation female for JDH and a full sister to herd sire 33Z. This moderate framed heifer bull is not only excellent on paper, but when you see him in the pen it is his massive center body that stands out. He is so capacious in terms of his rib shape, yet he’s wide pinned with tremendous amount of turn to his lower stifle. He compliments this with a sound set of feet and legs down low, as well as, a striking look from the side. Bid with confidence, you wont be disappointed. If you are looking for a stacked pedigree out of our MOST PROLIFIC cow family then look no further. Adjust your eyes here as this guy is just a March 31st calf. He is super soft made, deep sided, thick and moves like a cat. He is the natural calf by our donor dam 19Z whose 2nd natural calf was the pick of our 2016 Carload selling to Dvorak Herefords. Her 2016 son is a herd bull for our friends at Blueberry Hill Farms in Nebraska. Her 2017 daughter was the lead heifer in our Grand Champion pen of three heifers in Denver and sold in the Mile High sale to Churchill Cattle and Steven Green. This cow is moderate framed, super uddered and a no-miss Dam of Distinction. Her first calf is now a top cow in our herd that will be moving to the donor pen this year and is the dam of Lot 42. By the way, 19Z is also a maternal sister to Munson and the great donor 45C, dam of the lots 1-3 in this sale. Talk about female power! In addition this calf has EPD’s for BW, CED, REA, Marbling, BMI$ and CHB$ ALL in the top 10% of the breed! Use him on cows or heifers but keep all the daughters.

BR TRUST 0217 3373REF. SIREAHA #43478273 DOB: 9/18/13 TATTOO: 373 HOM-POLLED

We purchased this bull with our good friends Bob & Phylis Werk of Herman, MN from Birdwell Ranch in Oklahoma. We choose 3373 to add a shot of Revolution and Trust ge-netics into our program as an outcross mating. Specifically in our herd, he added growth and carcass traits that are unprecedented! And with three calf crops on the ground, his birth EPD has come down and his growth and carcass EPDs went up. We are expecting great things from him in the future.

Owned by Birdwell Ranch, Werk Polled Herefords, and Delaney Herefords.

One of a few Trust sons in the sale. Growth, pigment, EPD’s are a staple in our Trust sons and this guy is no different. Maternal sib to the dam of Lot 36, who has a perfect udder and is a member of our donor pen.Top 1% of the breed for REA; top 5% for CW, BMI, BII and CHB; top 10% SCF.

Low BW, high calving ease in a bull with a phenomenal EPD profile. He also comes from our top cow family with his mother being the first calf out of our 19Z cow, the dam of herd bulls and donor females and lot 25. This guy’s mother will be moving to our donor pen this year. She is moderate framed with a beautiful udder and teat placement and has raised 4 calves with an average BW ratio of 94 and weaning ratio of 104. Sired by the Valley Creek herd bull Convenience, here is a calf with a negative BW EPD and a 98 yearling EPD. His EPD’s for BW, WW, MILK, M&G, are all in the top 5% of the breed and Calving Ease, Udder, CW and BMI$ in the top 10%. Use him on heifers or cows to add performance and make replacement heifers.

HeifersWe encourage you to study the videos on these females, they are from the heart of our replacement pen and we are excited about what they can do for you. They were exposed to our proven calving ease bulls and have been poured with Dectomax and will have received two shots of Scour-Boss before sale day. They were also given BoviShield Gold FP 5VL5 before breeding. We ask that these heifers be picked up before February 5, 2020. Heifers left after that date will incur a $400 calving charge plus $4/day yardage fee. Please contact us if other accommodations need to be made.
