The qualifications you need

Journalism BA

P5003 Years (FT)

Journalists have never had so many opportunities to reach people across the globe as they have today.

This has made a huge difference to the circulation of information, perhaps especially via social media, and it has made it more important than ever to be a voice that can be trusted.

We’re committed to helping students become excellent journalists, meeting the high standards set by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), and to giving you the tools you need to launch yourself into this dynamic and competitive world.

We hope to see you here soon.

Professor Sarah Niblock Head of Department

Why choose Journalism? If people commented on your childhood curiosity. If you have always wanted to know all the answers. If you get angry about injustice. If you’re interested in how the institutions that shape our lives work. If you want to write with a purpose. If you’re good at getting to the heart of a story. If you like histories, contexts. If you believe every human should have a voice.

There are many reasons to choose Journalism for your degree subject. The only one that’s mandatory is passionate commitment.

Why choose Journalism at Brunel?Brunel is the only Greater London university to offer a Journalism BA with NCTJ accreditation. The NCTJ is a long-established and respected benchmark of excellence for journalists. We deliver essential NCTJ training alongside broader contextual and critical modules so you are best-placed to negotiate the demanding craft of journalism.

Although there’s plenty of fascinating and dynamically-taught theory, this is learning for the real world. You’ll learn in our 24 hour, state of the art, multi-platform digital newsroom and broadcast facilities, using the latest edition industry standard hardware and software. You’ll graduate with the skills and expertise that will give you the competitive edge when applying for jobs with the country’s cultural, political and social decision-making organisations, some of which are on our doorstep.

Journalism Matters! Our reputation attracts great guest speakers to our Journalism Matters! seminar series, which gives you the opportunity to network with journalists at the top of their game.

Recent visitors include Nick Davies of the Guardian, BBC journalists/presenters Sue Cooke and Ray Snoddy, Sky News editor John Ryley and award-winning ITV journalist Ronke Phillips.

Aaron Brown (Journalism BA)

“In a time when anyone can become a ’citizen journalist’, more emphasis is placed on skills like shorthand and a solid legal understanding. I got both at Brunel which contributed to me being accepted for a two-week work placement at T3 magazine after only five months of study!

I enjoyed my three years at Brunel immensely - and would return for another helping in a heartbeat, had the staff and course not helped me walk into such a staggeringly good job.”

“I fell in love with Brunel on my very first visit. The campus seemed safe, and the fact that you can get into London so easily was a massive bonus. All the lecturers were approachable and helpful, and all the students helping at the open day were so enthusiastic.

My writing has improved so much over my time here and I have developed my own style that I’m finally happy with. The lecturers really push you to develop your potential and the whole university experience has helped me become a lot more confident and independent.”
