Defying Gravi ty Date: Saturday, 24 June 2017

Overview Defying Gravity is a team bouldering event. It is described as “Not your average climbing competition”. Teams will attempt individual boulders and group challenges in 2 rounds of climbing followed by a super fun after party including drinks, food, music and prizes for all registrants!

What to Expect

Qualifying Round Format – Scramble

• 2 hours • 36 boulders • Total team score and attempts

1. Register – arrive at the designated time for your category and check in at registration

desk. Receive scorecards.

2. Competitor’s Briefing – just before climbing begins, the head judge will outline rules and answer questions.

a. Qualifying Round Rules: i. Climbing area will be divided into 6 sections. ii. Each section will have 6 boulders. iii. Each boulder can only count once per team (i.e. team member #1 finishes

boulder #1 in Section 1, no one from the same team can receive points for that boulder).

iv. Total team attempts on each boulder will be counted (i.e. team member #1 attempts boulder #1 section 1 and is not successful, team member #2 attempts same and is successful. Team receives 2nd attempt point value on scorecard).

v. There will be 2 team challenges to earn bonus points for the round. vi. Top 5 teams in total points from each category will advance to Finals.

3. Climbing Procedure – teams will have 2 hours to complete as many boulders and team challenges as possible.

a. Hand your team scorecard to the judge (1 per section). b. When called, identify which boulder you will attempt. c. Attempt boulder. After attempt, you can ask for scorecard back or ask to put your

card in the bottom of the pile. d. All boulders can be attempted multiple times. Points diminish after each

unsuccessful team attempt. e. At the end of the round, turn scorecard in and await results. f. Teams that qualify for finals will return at designated isolation times (see below).

Final Round Format – Modified Isolation

• 3 boulders/ challenges. • 8 minutes at each as a team.

“Isolation” Format is used to ensure that competitors cannot gain knowledge of finals boulders or watch other teams.

1. Check into Isolation Zone – this is an area where finalists marshal and warm-up for finals.

a. Phones and devices that can receive or broadcast wirelessly are not allowed.

2. Climbing Procedure – a. Teams leave isolation zone together and have 8 minutes to attempt

boulder/challenge #1. b. Challenge may be individual or require teamwork. c. Can be attempted as many times as possible in 8 minutes. d. At the end of 8 minutes, your team returns to the isolation zone. e. When all 5 teams have completed their time, the procedure starts again for

boulder/challenges #2 and #3.

After Party Fun, Games, Awards, and General Hilarity to follow J

a. Free hot dogs (meat/veggie) b. 1 free beer and additional provided at a cost of $2.00 c. Pot Luck - we encourage all registrants to bring an item to share (think healthy-

ish/yummy additions to hot dogs!)
