DEFINING IRONY

Irony:

A form of deliberate mockery in which one says the opposite of what isobviously true, or

When what happens is directly in contrast to what is expected to happen.Can you think of any examples of irony?

In this lesson, we will mainly explore the irony in which what happens is directly in contrast to what is expected to

happen. Remember that when we explain why something is ironic we ALWAYS have to use the word BUT.

Listen to the song Ironic by Alanis Morissette and answer the followingquestions:

1. Fill in the missing words in the lyrics provided.2. Irony number 1 in the lyrics is the fact that a man wins the lottery at age 98 (after

waiting 98 years), BUT he dies the next day and cant spend the money. Now find 10

more ironies and number them 2 to 11.

3. Find ONE example from the lyrics where what is said is the opposite of what is meantand EXPLAIN why it is ironic.

4. Choose any 5 of the 11 ironies in the lyrics and EXPLAIN them. Just write down thenumber of the irony (1 to 11) and the explanation of each. Remember to use the word

BUT in each explanation.

5. Now, listen to the song one last time and picture all the examples of irony mentioned.Then decide whether this is a happy song or a sad song, and explain why you think so.
