HALF DAY WORKSHOP 23 MARCH 201109.00 to 12.30 HALF DAY WORKSHOPLearning lean improvement techniques. A process with a degree of complexity and variation – seeing how wrong it can go without it being anybody’s fault.

TAKING FORWARD SKILLS FROM THE EVENT: CREATING AND MANAGING A LEAN SUPPLY CHAIN - LEARNING LEAN IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES USING A SIMULATION GAME

Delegates at the workshop will participate in a simple, but powerful simulation exercise that will provide the opportunity to learn about the Lean approach to improvement and some of the core improvement techniques as well as highlighting the typical challenges and issues associated with managing and improving cost, quality and service - even in relatively simple processes and supply chains that have only a small degree of complexity.

During the hands-on exercise, each delegate will play their part in enacting a supply chain process from customer requirement through to customer sign-off – with ample opportunity for seeing how ‘wrong’ it can go without it being anyone’s ‘fault’. Having been introduced to Lean techniques, delegates will then practice the application of Lean concepts and tools to improve the end-to-end process – considering the perspective of both customers and suppliers.

The workshop will then move on discuss and reflect on the outcomes and learning from the exercise – considering in more detail the factors that can affect the successful operation of a supply chain and highlight practical strategies and approaches to improve cost, quality and delivery performance. Issues related to managing and improving supply chains that involve multiple parties – including outsourcing and strategic partnership relationships - will also be explored.

Workshop Leaders Biography

The workshop will be facilitated by Martin Green and Keith Bissett of Bourton Group. Between them they have nearly 40 year’s consulting experience across a wide range of sectors – both public and private – including many assignments in the Defence environment.

With a particular focus on the generation of sustainable performance improvement, typically based around the application of Lean and Six Sigma principles, they have worked with manufacturing, service and Government organisations including Siemens, National Savings & Investments, Serco, HM Revenue & Customs, Vodafone and Vitec Group.

In the Defence Sector, within military, civilian and joint organisations, their work to reduce waste, reduce cost and improve output & service has included: advising on change management and deployment, facilitating senior management team workshops, development of new process frameworks, conducting awareness and practitioner training and leading lean improvement events to deliver substantial benefits.

Martin and Keith are both passionate exponents and skilled practitioners of the Lean approach with particular experience and insight into issues affecting the administrative and operational aspects of complex organisations and supply chains – focussing on the practical leadership, teamworking and process issues critical to better performance. Specific assignments they have undertaken include: development and implementation of a major Business Process Review programme (British Army Staff); long term Board advisory position (DG Defence Supply Chain – UK); industrial partnering advice and lean process improvement support (Whole Fleet Management – UK); major process improvement and culture change programme (Defence Aviation Repair Agency/Defence Support Group); lean process improvement implementation (Maritime Change Programme – HMNB Clyde); End-to-End review of Administrative processes (Royal Air Force).
