EXT. LINDBERGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – DAY

An irritated CINDY VORTEX stands on the front steps.

CINDYWhere the heck is he?

LIBBY FOLFAX sits beside Cindy with headphones slung around her neck.

LIBBYChill out, Cindy, he’ll be here. Why do you care, anyway?

CINDYYou know Neutron. If he’s not here by now, then he’s planning some elaborate entrance that ends with an explosion.

LIBBYYou got a point.

SHEEN ESTEVEZ and CARL WHEEZER walk up to the girls. Sheen is furious and throws his hands into the air.

SHEENMan that spring break was long. I feel like I haven’t seen this place in ten years!

LIBBYIt was only a week, Sheen.

Carl looks around nervously.

CARLHave you guys seen Jimmy?

LIBBYNot yet.

The warning bell RINGS and several students head inside.

CINDYI’m guessing it’ll start about now.

CARLWhat will start?

Page 2: Deep Impacts Excerpt

Far in the distance, Jimmy flies into view.

JIMMY(distant)

Ahhhhhhh!

CINDYThat.

Jimmy rockets towards the school. His jetpack is spiraling in every direction. He is YELLING.

SHEENFive bucks says he lands on the roof!

LIBBYGot change for a twenty?

Jimmy’s jetpack finally seems to stabilize, but then he shoots forward and barrels into Cindy. The duo flies across the playground. They pass a twonkie and a squirrel, who are perched side-by-side on a seesaw and watching them. Jimmy and Cindy land in a heap on the ground.

JIMMYI can fix that!

Cindy sits up and rubs her temple.

CINDYNice invention, Nerdtron!

She extends her hand to Jimmy. He clumsily grabs it and is hoisted to his feet.

CINDYMaybe next time you could land somewhere that’s not me!

On the ground, an airbag belatedly deploys from Jimmy’s backpack.

INT. CLASSROOM – DAY

MS. FOWL strolls into her classroom. The chalkboard has ‘Field Trip to Planetarium Today!’ circled.

Page 3: Deep Impacts Excerpt

MS. FOWLGood morning, children! I hope you all enjoyed last week’s Spring Break.

SHEENI can’t even remember what happened. Did I go somewhere?

In the background, Jimmy glares at Sheen.

MS. FOWLI just talked to Principal Willoughby and it seems today’s trip to the planetarium is --

NICKLame.

MS. FOWL No.

SHEENOut of this world?

MS. FOWLNo!

LIBBYCancelled?

MS. FOWLYes!

(shakes head)I mean no! Actually, our field trip will proceed as planned.

Sheen leaps out of his chair.

SHEENYes! We’re finally going to the planetarium!

Sheen runs his fingers down his face in agony.

SHEEN (CONT’D)I’ve waited so long!

Cindy glares at Sheen while the class GROANS.

Page 4: Deep Impacts Excerpt

NICKPlanetariums are like…so uncool.

LIBBYI can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’d rather stay in class.

MS. FOWLChildren, please! Going to the planetarium is a Lindbergh Elementary School tradition.

LIBBYLast year’s kids didn’t go.

MS. FOWLAll traditions have to start somewhere!

PRINCIPAL WILLOUGHBY prances into the classroom.

WILLOUGHBY(sing-song)

Good morning, children! Oh, I am so excited for all of you. Just look at those little faces!

All but Sheen are scowling and depressed.

WILLOUGHBY (C0NT’D)The planetarium is a magical place filled with wonder and excitement!

JIMMYI don’t think anyone here feels wonder. Or excitement.

(short beat)Except Sheen.

Jimmy’s face lights up as he hatches an idea.

JIMMY (CONT’D)Of course! Why didn’t I think of this before? Ms. Fowl, surely the main goal of today’s outing is to arouse astronomical interest?

MS. FOWLUm, yes…

Page 5: Deep Impacts Excerpt

JIMMYWell, I can enlighten the class more than any planetarium could! In approximately three hours, an asteroid is expected to strike the surface of the moon. I can take everyone in my space car!

REST OF CLASS (O.S.)Hurray!

JIMMYAnd give an enriching lecture!

REST OF CLASS (O.S.)Boo!

WILLOUGHBYNow wait just a minute, Mr. Neutron. The school board doesn’t approve of extra-planetary field trips.

MS. FOWLWe’d have to let all your parents know, draft new permission slips –-

JIMMYBut the school won’t have to pay for a bus, and --

WILLOUGHBYHave fun at the moon!

Principal Willoughby zips out of the room.

MS. FOWLJimmy, why don’t you go home and get your space car. We’re going to the moon!

The class CHEERS. Sheen glances around the room.

SHEENSeriously, can someone tell me what I did over Spring Break? These moments should be cherished!
