Welcome to the Summer 2016 brochure of classes and events at Déda.

This season is packed full of opportunities toboth ‘see’ and ‘do’ at Déda. We have changedthe layout of the Performance Section of thebrochure to make it easier to find the showsyou enjoy coming to, grouping events bytype so all the Family shows – for example –can be found together.

Our Class Programme will run in full throughto 22 July, but look out for the specialSummer Timetable which will see someclasses carry on throughout the summerbreak. Our fantastic Summer Fun Clubs willbe running again, offering a wide range ofunique creative experiences for young people– from circus skills and acting to dance and craft.

The Performance Programme sees the returnof authentic Flamenco from southern Spainwith Olga Pericet performing withoutstanding live musicians. A very specialtake on Dickens’ Oliver Twist can be

experienced through a new show by AvantGarde Dance who present Fagin’s Twist, a dark tale told by amazing performers.

In June the second Derby Book Festivalreturns to the city’s venues and we aredelighted to be hosting several events which include the award winning Lost Dogperforming their Edinburgh Festival hitParadise Lost. For families the wonderfulDoodle Dance will get children involved, and for the avid reader local author JoannaCannon reads from her hit book The Troublewith Goats and Sheep.

Déda continues to look ahead withconfidence and with further Local Authorityfunding challenges expected we are growingour fundraising effort with some exciting newinitiatives. There will be more about how youcan be involved to follow in Autumn 2016.

Compañía Olga PericetSin títuloPresented by Flamenco Edition ’16

One of the most celebrated female flamencodancers of the moment, Olga Pericet’sinnovative approach to choreography anddance blends traditional flamenco valueswith an intense female force.

Through an original score, Pericet’s dancetakes the audience to a personal andintimate world in which two distinctive andcontrasting emotions are expressed throughdifferent styles. Sin titulo expresses thoseemotions without reservation, withoutadditives. Olga and her company representthe most powerful, brave, and bold approachto today’s flamenco. This is a true tribute totradition with a contemporary language.

Fagin’s TwistPresented by Avant Garde Dance and The Place

A tale you think you know unravels andexplodes.

Fagin’s Twist is the untold story of a notorious, complex and perhaps misunderstood villain. Itimagines the story of Fagin's youth, corruptedby greed and worn down by poverty. The streetsare a place of little comfort and no easyredemption, and there is no fairy tale ending.

See Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist in a shadowynew light. Tony Adigun’s Avant Garde Danceflip your expectations of five familiarcharacters with their unmatched contemporaryHip Hop style.Fagin’s Twist is commissioned by Theatre Bristol, East LondonDance, Pavilion Dance South West, Dance East and The Place, and co-produced by The Place. Supported using public fundingby the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Tony Adigun is a Work Place artist.

It’s said there is a possibility that God madeeverything because he was terrified of doingnothing. Here is a re-telling of the story of thebeginning of everything inspired by Milton’sParadise Lost – told through words, music andthe easily misunderstood medium of dance.

A show for anyone who has created anything(child, garden, paper aeroplane) and thenwatched it spiral out of control. Lost Dog’s Ben Duke won the National Dance Award forOutstanding Male Performance in January.Co-commissioned by The Place and Battersea Arts Centrewith further commissioning support from Bath ICIAUniversity. Developed with support from The Point, Eastleighand South East Dance. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Ben Duke is a Work Place artist.
