“Mirain” grade introduces genuine 3D prints. The printing tehnique takes PVC gravure printingto a new level of realism.
Premium woodgrains use pearlescent printing which has been a major success and remains highly popular.
Standard woodgrains are widely used and are great for budget ranges where contemporary looks are combined with durable lacquer and emboss combinations.

It is no coincidence that at the moment trends that address
both value and quality are having the most positive impact. The
rise and rise of MFC doors is a great example of this.
The increased prominence of texture as a key design element,
such as EGGER’s deep linear ST22 finish and the quality of the
reproductions, has led to growth in the use of Melamine Faced
Chipboard as frontals.
“With consumers increasingly opting for the contemporary
look, the colour or grain pattern in combination with the texture
does not require shape as a third dimension, such as a shaker
style door. And so sleek ‘slab’ styles look set for a period of
sustained growth.” explains Andrew Sanderson, EGGER’s Product
Manager.
Within kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and office spaces they
are becoming a winning formula. The main reason behind its
success is that it offers a premium look for an entry level price,
something the German and Italian kitchen manufacturers have
been doing so well for years.
“This allows furniture manufacturers to increase their sales
margins in a challenging market. A number of our customers are
already reporting increased sales margins by up to 20% by
launching some of our new designs and switching to MFC doors.”
comments Andrew Sanderson.
To support this trend EGGER has added 4 new softwood
decors to their UK Industry Collection, which are perfect for use
as MFC doors. The Avola decors were a major highlight during
EGGER’s recent in-house design exhibitions, due to the versatile
range of elegant colour options and a deep 3D character which
has the look and feel of real wood.
All four colourways (H1474 ST22 White Avola, H1476 ST22
Champagne Avola, H1477 ST22 Grey Avola and H1478 ST22
Truffle Brown Avola) are now available from stock along with
texture and 2mm colour matched ABS edging.
The Avola decors also work exceptionally well in combination

with EGGER’s new palette of natural grey tones (U741 ST9 Lava,
U795 ST9 Brown Grey, U631 ST9 Olive, U717 ST9 Dakar, U100
ST9 Mussel, F488 ST2 Quartz Cubanit, F489 ST2 Quartz Inox),
which were launched last summer.
Also following the hugely successful launches of H3368 Natural
Lancaster Oak and H3840 Natural Mandal Maple, EGGER are
looking to continue revitalising their classic woods by introducing
a new beech and a new walnut for 2009.
Andrew Sanderson, Product Manager believes these new classic
woods will become the bestsellers of the future. He commented,
“The best product designs are developed through a fusion of
consumer needs and innovative thinking. EGGER’s so-called
Modern Classics are no different. They bring together the most
popular wood species with the latest colour trends to create
exciting and dynamic new designs.”
“Over the last few years it has become almost impossible to find
examples of furniture design consisting exclusively of woodgrain
decors. Successful interaction between uni colours and woodgrains
has developed into a key movement. It seemed only natural,
therefore, that classic woodgrains like oak, maple, beech and walnut
display a higher degree of naturalness, as well as more pronounced
interplay of colour. This allows them to mix more freely with
EGGER’s new natural grey colour palette. With EGGER’s new
Modern Classic woodgrains you can be sure of creating an
impression today that will last for years to come.”
EGGER’s new beech - H3911 Natural Tauern Beech could be
regarded as a next generation alternative to the existing beech
decors in the market, many of which are now over 15 years old.
Important design elements have now been addressed and Natural
Tauern Beech includes more natural elements such as knots. This
design also has a greater interplay of colours, which are currently
in demand, due to the trend for combining uni colours with
woodgrains.
A new walnut will be introduced to the UK Collection, as EGGER
show no signs of slowing down their product development. H1713
Grey Brown Ontario Walnut has the characteristics of an American
walnut and has dark pores, which creates natural elegant
appearance. The Grey Brown colour tone was intentionally selected
to recreate the effect of an untreated veneer, which can also be
very well combined with new neutral uni colours, in particular U717
ST9 Dakar.

Worktops cover the largest area in a kitchen so it is paramount that
quality, design and aesthetics are taken into consideration when planning
this space. Affordability is also a key factor for many clients.
James Latham, the UK's leading distributor of timber, panels, flooring and
solid surface is adding Silica worktops to its portfolio of decorative interior
products and is predicting great success for this product.
Silica solid surface worktops are surfaced with HI-MACS® Natural Acrylic
Stone™. Constructed from 6mm HI-MACS® sheet bonded to 30mm MR
MDF with a 1mm HPL balancer to the underside, the 6mm surface allows the
integration of drainer grooves, hob-rods and sinks.
Silica carries the prestigious FIRA Gold Award and has a 5 year guarantee
(excluding installation).
Silica will be available ex-stock from James Latham in a range of 8 colours
and a selection of popular sizes plus accessories. Technical advice and
training with regard to finishing and installation is also available.

customers who want the benefits of solid surface but require a lower price
than the bespoke option. Solid surface is one of our fastest growing

Sandvik’s textured press plate and endless press belt operation –
formerly Hindrichs-Auffermann – have recently launched its sample
collection under a theme of “SteelArt”.
Since being taken over by Sandvik Process Systems in 2000, this
side of the business has undergone a number of major changes
including the re-engineering of production processes. Its full
integration into the organisation means Sandvik is now capable of
providing a complete service to the WBP, laminate and melamine
coating industries – from base to surface.
“Being part of the overall Sandvik group brings the stability that
customers are looking for these days,” explains Johan Sjögren, Global
Sales Manager. “These are challenging times for our industry as a
whole so we’re pleased to offer the level of support that only a global
operation can deliver, alongside the design expertise and problem
solving that our business is already known for.
The “SteelArt” sample collection includes a number of innovative
new surfaces as well as progressions on designs with proven market
success. It shows how art and science can be combined in both
smooth and textured finishes to create decorative surfaces that are
simultaneously tactile, practical and emotionally stimulating.
Sandvik’s technology now
makes it possible to achieve
textural depths of up to 800μm,
reflecting the real character of
natural wood or stone surfaces.
Such texture depth can also be
used to create practical
characteristics such as anti-slip
or, with other surfaces, ease of
cleaning or resistance to dirt or
finger marks.
Sandvik recently opened a new 300 m² design centre where more
than 1000 different surfaces can be viewed, and the availability of two
laboratory presses to develop new surface solutions.

Following months of intensive market and customer research, combined
with rigorous forecasting into the most important and impactful trends set to
emerge across the furniture and interiors sector, Kronospan has launched its
confident new decor collection, Fresh.
Renowned for breaking new ground in the panels market, Kronospan is
launching an unprecedented 15 decors, delivering limitless design
opportunities and an inspirational palette.
Kronospan’s new product development and marketing manager, Paul
Duddle, explains how the collection took shape: “As a design-centric company,
long before we embarked on the development stage for this collection, we
extensively researched global design trends. By ensuring that these findings
have remained at the very heart of the Fresh collection, we are giving our
customers in the retail, shopfitting and general surface design sectors a unique
opportunity to stay stylishly ahead of the market.
“We know that surface texture is crucial to maximizing our customers’
designs, so this is a key theme with Fresh. Our new embossed graining
reproduces the natural tactile appeal of wood’s pores, and has a matt finish with
gloss highlights, which complements the new linear decors in Fresh.”
Opening the collection with a daringly different decor, Statum is a
groundbreaking abstract design with layered pearlescent and gloss elements
that create an ultramodern look. Joining this avant-garde decor are Riven
Pewter and Riven Platinum, which step over another design threshold. These
striking decors have metallic nuances and an embossed grain to give textural
depth. As their names denote, they build on the ‘metal meets nature’ theme
and have an inherent durability.
Ivory Flax and Ebony Flax products evolve this natural fusion concept and
are the first textile motifs to reach the UK market, bringing the neutral appeal
of woven fabric and crisp, clean linen to any interior scheme.
The more traditional products in the Fresh portfolio take their appearance
from the natural beauty of timber. Ash-inspired products, Ash Messina, Samara
Luce and Samara Scuro characterize the fine grain of Ash to harmonize with
today’s cool, calm interiors. Samara Scuro’s hints of grey and subtle macchiato
undertones provide the perfect contrast for contemporary neutrals, while Ash
Messina’s distinctive graining and fine limed effect creates a tasteful effect in
all applications.
Pastel Birch is a subtle, timeless arrangement of a light birch effect and a hint
of pastel bloom, and Life Beech builds upon the characteristic warmth of
beech. Gentle Elm is a warm grey décor with gentle negative pore highlights,
and Café Makassar is a tropical blend that mixes classic Makassar timber grain
with up-to-the-minute grey hues, encouraging strong and impactful contrasts.
The Cono trio of Cono Bianco, Cono Grigio and Cono Naturale are a
relaxed family of products that provide designers with an irresistible spectrum
of light to rich tones for easy, unadulterated style.
All Fresh decors are partnered by matching laminates and edgings. In a huge
vote of confidence, Renolit has already committed to provide perfect vinyl/PVC
matches to the Life Beech, Samara Luce, Samara Scuro and Ash Messina
decors. Paul concludes: “A further coup came when edging specialists Dolken
and Bausch Linnermann announced matching PVC pre-glued melamine edging
tapes for all 15 designs.”

A Breath ofFresh Air From
10 Decorative & Solid Surfacing | January 2010
With many of the UK’s best selling MFC designs in the
market now 15-20 years old, is it time to refresh your
product offering?
Updating and re-interpreting ‘classic’ wood species is
the thinking behind EGGER’s ‘modern classics’ approach.
But why replace popular decors with new ones?
EGGER’s Product Manager Andrew Sanderson explains
why: “Over the past few years the trend for mixing and
matching has grown in popularity. Indeed, furniture
designers are telling us that they are increasingly using less
fully co-ordinating door and carcass matches”
“Of course it is right to question the wisdom of
potentially replacing a good selling beech with a new one,”
adds Andrew. “But with wood reproductions now being so
realistic, it is important to offer the best available, rather
than simply what has sold well in the past. We believe that
increasingly discerning consumers will appreciate the
difference and are even willing to pay a premium, as our
MFC designs become increasingly closer to the look and
feel of real wood veneer.”
“Although the popularity of more unusual, expressive
woods like Zebrano and Palisander are increasing in
popularity, it is crucial that we update the species of wood
that have been firm UK favourites, or classics. Some of
which are now between 15 and 20 years old, and in
comparison to the new offerings are beginning to look
somewhat tired and dated. This provides the opportunity
to keep your offering fresh and modern, especially
important in these challenging times”
MIXING, MATCHING AND CONTRASTING
Successful integration between uni and woodgrain
decors has developed into a key trend. It seemed only
natural, therefore, that EGGER have looked to update their
range of ‘classic’ woods. As well as having a higher degree
of naturalness, EGGER’s new ‘modern classics’ such as
H3911 ST9 Natural Tauern Beech, H3368 ST9 Natural
Lancaster Oak, H3840 ST9 Natural Mandal Maple and
H1713 ST9 Grey Brown Ontario Walnut have a greater
interplay of colour than their somewhat flatter
predecessors. This allows them to mix more freely with
EGGER’s new palette of natural grey tones: U741 ST9 Lava,
U795 ST9 Brown Grey, U100 ST9 Mussel, U717 ST9
Dakar and U631 ST9 Olive.
