FURTHER DECKING ADVICE

PLANNING PERMISSIONGenerally most decks in a domestic situation do not require planning permission.There are exceptions however, such as property in conservation areas or very largedecks. If unsure, consult your local planning authority. All decking for commercialapplications etc. should be checked with the local authority.

BUILDING REGULATIONS

Again domestic decks up to 600mm above ground level generally do not need to besubmitted for approval under Building Regulations. However with any raised deck it isgood safety practice to include a handrail and most systems offered are around900mm to 1000mm high. Raised decks above 600mm high may require approval byBuilding Control. For these it is a requirement that handrail and balustrading should beat least 1100mm height from the deck level. With decks of this height it is also wise toconsult a structural engineer, as is also any deck where heavy loads such as largepots, hot tubs or large gatherings of people are possible. Again if unsure, consult yourlocal authority as discretionary powers vary amongst building control departments.
