Happy Holidays!Welcome to our Winter Issue! It is indeed that time of year as we are dashing down Candy Cane Lane and just around the bend 2015 draws near! It’s a time to enjoy all of the seasonal delights, cherish its personal meaning and reflect back on the year nearly gone by.

Temecula has plenty of festivities to get in the holiday spirit. Don’t miss our Check It Out section for fun activities and events throughout the community. Personally, the Tomaselli Family can’t wait for Temecula On Ice—an outdoor ice rink in Old Town. It’s a little bit of Temecula’s own winter wonderland! Stephanie also discovered a cool family experience—The Polar Express Train Ride & Reading through a Christmas Tree lot. The Mantiply Family will be ready to turn in their golden tickets!

As this past year has whizzed by for both Stephanie and I, no doubt many of you feel the same. Between the two households, we’ve enjoyed so much—from first day of kindergarten, visits by the tooth fairy, attending a son’s thrilling baseball games, watching a daughter excel at soccer, family trips, TrailBlazer of the Month Awards, and conquering the monkey bars.

As we look back, we treasure those everyday family moments that keep life exciting and memorable.

A lot of our time this year has been dedicated to publishing The View Morgan Hill paper (the little paper that could) and proudly, we bring to you our eighth issue! We are so grateful for all the support and encouragement we have been given by you—our neighbors, our

friends, and families. A very special thanks goes to our guest writing contributors and our advertisers. We simply could not do it without them.

We look forward to continuing our mission to connect us by sharing the wonderful encounters found just beyond our doorstep. May your holidays shine bright! Spread the sparkle and Stay Connected Temecula. We’ll see you in 2015!

Cheers, Lisa Tomaselli & Stephanie MantiplyCo-Founders, The View Morgan Hill

Smile OnWe shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.-Mother Teresa

Nearly every weekday morning, there’s a friendly face that is making the world a brighter place one smile at a time. With a grin and wave, Faraehd Netjati, greets school children, parents and morning walkers throughout Morgan Hill. In the 8 o’clock hour, one can find him at the corner of Morgan Hill Drive and Butterfield Stage Road and just before the clock strikes nine, he’s a grinning fixture at the entrance of Tony Tobin Elementary School (TTES).

So who is Fred? He’s a retiree, who moved to Morgan Hill nearly five years ago. He originates from Iran and for the past 40 years has lived in the United States. He doesn’t speak English but fortunately for all who cross Fred’s path, a smile transcends any language barrier and his kindness is understood by all.

Fred, 75, lives with family in Morgan Hill—he resides with his sister, her husband Amin Fakhri and their children. Across the street from their house, lives his brother-in-law’s twin brother Aziz Fakhri. And just streets away, Fred’s nieces and nephews have homes here in Morgan Hill. Fred, who has never been married or had children of his own, has a genuine love for people, shares Aziz.

“He loves kids and people. That’s why he smiles.”

Fred’s morning routine, with SMILE stops along the way, began when a leg ailment made it necessary for him to exercise.

“The doctor told him to… exercise and his exercise is walking. That’s why every morning and every afternoon he walks a little bit around the houses,” says Fred’s brother-in-law Aziz.

As part of his exercise route, Fred would follow his nephews to TTES school when they were students. Once there, he took a seat on his walker and offered up a delightful expression for passersby. When his nephews moved on to higher education, Fred contin-ued his morning smiling stop.

Fellow Morgan Hill resident Tami McGrew, who has a fourth grader at TTES, has witnessed Fred’s actions and has become acquainted with him through the years.

“He amazes me. He walks so much despite his physical disability. Joy just exudes from his heart and it’s genuine. He genuinely loves and cares for people.”

Rain or shine (and thank goodness it’s mostly shine here in Temecula), Fred has maintained nearly perfect smiling attendance. Through his brother-in-law, Fred, who speaks Farsi, relayed his motivation, “People equals Happiness.”

Being THANKFUL for the ARTS

“The world would be a better place if…”

By:Jennifer Boer

This November, Tony Tobin Elementary School showed Thanks to the Arts by celebrating the PTA Reflections program.

The Reflections program is a National program that encourages students in Pre-K through Grade 12 to explore and be involved in the arts. Every year, students reflect on a theme and create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, music composition, literature, pho-tography and visual arts. The theme for the 2014-2015 school year was “The world would be a better place if...”.

Tony Tobin Elementary school had 40 art entries, including at least one in each of the six art categories. All of the talented artists were recognized and celebrated for their contributions during our Art Gallery Night this past November 4th. Our amazing children have a bright future ahead of them if they follow their own advice on how to make the world a better place! Some of the many wonderful ideas represented were ways to support water conservation, feeding the hungry, being a better friend to all, rescuing ani-mals, putting an end to littering, and recognizing and being confident in one’s own abilities,.

Thank you TTES and the TTES PTA for continuing to support this invaluable program!

Over the holidays I plan on playing A LOT. I also want to spend time with my friends & family. I love that during the holidays I get time off.I look forward to opening the doors to my advent calendar each day.

Makena (8) Cohen (3)

Makena: I will spend Christmas Eve with my grandparents and Christmas Day with my Nana and Pop Pop. Also with my cousins of course...I can’t wait!

Cohen: I will have Christmas with Santa and Jacob (the elf).

Makena: I like being on break from school and doing fun things with my family and friends. Also I can’t wait for Jacob (the elf) to come back this year.Cohen: I love presents from Santa. I want to open all of them.

The Flores Siblings Camryn (8) Caden (10)“During the holidays we get a Christmas Tree and listen to Christmas music as we decorate it. We also get our own Christmas trees in our rooms and we decorate them by ourselves. The Elf on the Shelf comes to our house. His name is Nick. He hides all over our house and he delivers our letters to Santa. Santa sends us back a message on the computer. But that’s not the real Santa. The real Santa is magic and we can’t see him. We have a Noah’s Ark Advent calendar and we count down the days until Christmas with all of the little animals. On Christmas Eve we go to church and to our Nana and Papa’s house. On Christmas Day, our Nana and Papa come to our house with presents in a huge Santa Bag. We eat breakfast with them and then go to our Grammie and Poppie’s house for more presents and dinner.”

Camryn: What I love most about the holidays is Santa coming to my house and going outside after Christmas to play with all of my new toys. I also love to spend time with my family and that we have a break from school.

Caden: What I love the most about the holidays is spending time with my family and playing with the new stuff I get from Santa. I also love eating a big breakfast and dinner on Christmas Day with my family.

Braden Bauwens (7)“I love to spend time with my family. We do special stuff. I have a special little mouse ornament my dad gave me.”

Brenna Bauwens (5)“We go to our families home to celebrate. I love getting new ornaments, and decorating my little christmas tree.”

We asked neighborhood children how do you spend the holidays with your family, and what

do you love most about this time of year?

The Top TEN must DO’s for your Holiday Party!

By: Regina Rodrigues of Jake Duke Studios

I have taken part in a lot of holiday parties and I have pretty much seen it all - from the Good, the Bad and the OMG! Here are a few tips for creating a fun and memorable bash!

1. Play Music Fa-la-la-la-laThe music should be playing before guests arrive and still playing until the last guest departs. Holiday music is extra fun but shouldn’t be played all night. Having it on for the first hour or two is enough to get people in the spirit, but anything over 2 hours your guests may need earplugs.

2. Be Ready to have Fun!Be Ready when the guests arrive…this is a MUST! Don’t try to attempt a recipe the day of. Practice will make perfect, so prep beforehand. You should remember the host sets the tone for any event. A host that is stressed out makes most people uncomfortable, so remember if you’re having fun then everybody around you will have fun!

3. Would you like a red, white or a shot of Tequila? As soon as your guests enter, they should have a drink awaiting them (non-alcoholic options too!). It’s as simple as that.

4. Decorating your homeCreate a holiday theme and stick to it! Start by visiting your local hardware store and find your way to the paint section and pick color swatches you like. This will make your life a whole lot easier when buying holiday decorations.Keep the swatches with you at all times and refer to them when picking the linens and decor for your table. It will help by keeping your design consistent.

5. Replace photos and #hashtag away!Switch out your everyday pho-tos with photos of your guests from previous holiday parties and flashbacks of good times with your friends and family. Don’t forget to snap away and create a fun #hashtag for your party to share your memories with your guests. It’s a fun way to see your party from your guests’ point of view!

6. Ambiant lightingDo you have dusty candles all around your home that have never been lit? Well its time to display your courage and light them up. This a simple and inexpensive way that will create a warm and inviting feel for your party. If you are concerned about fire safety, you can have a fire extinguisher on hand or purchase battery operated candles that look incredibly real to do the trick!

7. MIXology 101Crowds like to gather around anything food or alcohol related. So whatever you do, DON’T put these two categories all together in one area! Separate them - it will force your guests to mingle at your party and creates more than one conversation spot. Set up a DIY Cocktail Mixology Bar and let your guests get creative by mixing and stirring up their own concoctions. Totally fun, right?

8. Make Desserts… or at least Fake it!The Holidays are such a great time to eat desserts! Start baking away, or at least pretend you slaved over them all day and purchase fabulous desserts from your local bakery. Create and design an amazing dessert table with fun stands and platters and just wait and see the magic of adults turning into kids in a candy store.

9. Pamper your guestsNever underestimate the power of a great powder room.Every detail will be noticed and reveal so much about you, so don’t skimp on it. Create a basket of fun mints, a bottle of perfume, a hangover kit, and travel size hairspray among other small primping necessities. Don’t forget to add a few pine cones to make it festive!

10. Give out Party FavorsI always think party favors are a must. Whether it’s something small like candy canes

by the door as they leave or a swag bag of Holiday treats, it’s important to thank your guests for coming!

Compassionate Tree Foundationby AL Pepito TTES - PTA President

It all started with a with four neighborhood girls just wanting to have fun selling baked goods and lemonade from their own stand on Sattui Street in Morgan Hill.

After some success, they started to wonder what they were going to do with the money they made. They figured since everyone was doing the ALS Ice Bucket challenge, they could donate the money to an ALS cause.

Their donation made them feel good to be helping a worthy cause, so they decided they want-ed to do more. Eden Clark, Izzy Giansante, Cammy Peterson and Alex Nercessian founded the Compassionate Tree Foundation (CTF).

When asked why they started CTF, they quoted their mission statement- Help Community, Help People, Help Animals and Help make Temecula a Better Place.

This is exactly what these girls have done. After speaking to their principal Mr. McTasney at Tony Tobin Elementary School, they were incorporated into the school’s Trail Leader program. Since then they have recruited 16 other fifth graders to help in their organization.

So far the CTF has had a garage sale with the proceeds going to help animals, organized a park clean up at Morgan Hill Park and a spearheaded a food drive for cats and dogs, which brought in over 400 pounds of food for the Animal Ark Center. In November they will be helping the elder-ly at the Sun City Senior Center and then will be creating Goodie Bags for the less fortunate during the holidays.

The CTF is always planning one month ahead for the next project. If you have an idea or a community project that you may need help with, just write it down and drop it off at Tony Tobin Elementary School (care

of Compassionate Tree Foundation) and it will reach them.

Thank you Compassionate Tree Foundation for all that you do to help make Temecula a Better Place.

Roses 101By Melissa McCabe Navaroli

December and January are generally quiet months in the garden. There is one big task that rose owners need to do: annu-al pruning! When done correctly, rose pruning promotes airflow (which helps prevent disease) and flower production. Here are some tips on how to successfully prepare your roses for next year!

TIMING: The best time to do rose pruning is in late January or early February. Every year, I do it early when I am home for Christmas break, but earlier pruning does open the bush up to frost damage if there is a late season frost.

VITAL TASKS: There are two tasks that need to be done regardless of rose variety, height, or climate. Remove all branches that are touching or rubbing together. Remove completely any dead or decayed wood from the base of the plant. Both of these tasks are necessary for the health of the plant. Additionally, all leaves need to be stripped regardless of the variety.

TYPE OF CUT: The canes (branches) should be cut at an angle (45 degrees) about one quarter inch above an outward facing bud. Buds facing inside the bush will only lead to crowding in the spring and summer.

BUSH ROSES: When pruning rose bushes that are tall (hybrid tea, floribunda, grandiflora etc.), remove all branches that are thinner than a pencil. When completed, there should be five or six main canes in an open framework that allows for air circulation. Reduce the overall height of the bush to between 18” and 3 feet.

MINI ROSES: For mini roses, don’t worry about branches that are too thin. Simply remove about one half to one third of the height and thin the inside so there is room for the bush to fill back in the following spring. Shape the bush according to your preference.

CLIMBING ROSES: Cut down to one third of its current height and re-train over the trellis/structure that it’s on. You can also remove the side shoots and keep the main framework of the climber. Typically the more you cut climbers, the more flowers you will get the following year.

TREE ROSES: The easiest way to handle these is to think of them as a shrub on a stick. Treat the top of the tree the way you would a rose bush of that variety. Weeping trees should only be cut after their second year to help establish their shape.

CHEERS, TEMECULA!We want to wish the city of Temecula a very HAPPY 25th ANNIVERSARY!

On Dec. 1, 1989, the city of Temecula was incorporated. At that time, the population was about 27,000 and has since quadrupled to over 106,000 residents, making it one of the fastest growing cities in the nation!

One of many exciting projects underway in Temecula is the renovation of the Vail Headquarters. On a beautiful November day, Vail Ranch Restoration Association (VaRRA) in conjunction with Arteco Partners provided the public a rare opportunity to visit the site with a construction open house event. The Vail HQ's first tenants, A La Minute Creamery and Augie's Coffee House, were on hand serving up delicious hand crafted ice cream and fresh roasted coffee.

“It has been very rewarding to finally start the renovation of these historic treasures,” says Jerry Tessier, President of Arteco Partners and owner and developer of the Vail Headquarters project. “We have discovered not only original wood siding, one hundred year old bottles, and ranch tools buried in the grounds, but also discovered that the people of Temecula are keenly interested in this project; they are learning about the history of their city and are excited for Vail Headquarters—once the heart of the community—to come alive again.”

For more information, visit www.vailhq.com and vailranch.org. Got Social? www.facebook.com/vailhq and www.instagram.com/vailhq

Top 5 EASY Tips for Avoiding Holiday

Weight GainResearch shows that most Americans gain 1-2 pounds during the holidays. It doesn’t sound like much but multiply that over years and it can become a big problem – espe-cially because we don’t usually lose the weight afterwards (despite those darn New Year’s resolutions). Don’t get derailed this holiday season! Use these five easy tips to keep on track -- your skinny jeans will thank you for it.

Plan ahead. Before heading out to that holiday party, create food goals for yourself and write them down! Come up with a meal plan to enjoy a few of your favorite treats while keeping your calorie intake in check. This simple step of thinking and having your goals written down before you go will help keep you on

track and help you avoid the guilts from holiday party gluttony.

Create new family holiday rituals that involve getting outside. Instead of every-one migrating to the couch and the big screen after your holiday meal, grab grandma and get outside. Make it a tradition that the whole family walks the neighborhood or plays flag football after Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.

Not only will it burn some extra calories, but it will keep you from the continued snacking while hanging around the leftovers all evening.

Don’t go to any party hungry. Going along with #1, don’t just plan your meal for the party, plan to eat before you go. Many times before a holiday event we avoid eating during the day to “save” some calories for the party. The problem is that by the time you get to the party, you are ravenous and will overeat. Instead, eat lots of veggies throughout the day; they are loaded with fiber and nutrients that will keep you from getting too hungry and will keep your calorie intake on track.

Keep a drink in your hand. This will make it harder for you to reach over to that buffet of badness. Occupy your hands with a low cal cocktail or better yet, seltzer water with lemon. If you’re planning on drinking alcohol limit yourself to two and be sure to alternate every other drink with seltzer or lemon water. Not only will this help you avoid being the one at the party who belts out the entire 80’s mix off key during karaoke but it will save you some calories too.

Keep healthy snacks with you at all times. We’ve all been there - Christmas shopping all day and our sustenance has consisted of Starbucks and a piece of hard candy we found at the bottom of our purse. Before you find yourself in line for a pretzel or Cinnabon (I swear they push out some sort of hypnotic vapor that lulls innocent bystanders into their buttery icing lair), make sure you pack some healthy foods. Pack a small baggie of raw almonds, sliced apples or veggies with hummus; try to eat small meals/ snacks throughout the day which will keep your metabolism humming and keep you on track. At our clinic, we also love our natural detox system; easy on-the-go vitamin packets that keep energy up and

appetite down. Whatever you bring, make sure it’s enough to keep your appetite under control so you’re not tempted by the drive-thru and sabotage your resolve.

Using these five super simple tips will keep you on the right path so you won’t need those blasted New Year’s resolutions – you’ll be ahead of the game and charging steadfast toward maintaining a healthy weight for your lifetime.

Join us in the office and the gym for an entirely new approach to your health & wellness! We at the Kairin Clinic and Kaia FIT Temecula wish you and yours a very happy, healthy holiday season!

Cheers!Dr. Aimee WarrenRebecca Warren, MSN-FNP
