Suspended material (scanning electronmicrograph) collected by filtration oflarge volumes of Pacific surface waters(40°N, 160°E). Particles are a variety ofmicroscopic marine plants (mostly coc-colithophores and some diatoms) andanimals. The most abundant coccoliths,3 to 4 micrometers in diameter withrays, belong to the species Emilianiahuxleyi. Hard skeletal parts of biogenicparticles fall from surface to deep wa-ters. At all depths, they dominate thesuspended phases and their dissolutionand attrition, in course of settling, has.an important effect on the chemistry of
