December is upon us and soon we will be dismissing students for the

December break. The last day for students will be December 19th,

2014. Classes will resume on January 5th, 2015. We wish everyone a

wonderful holiday season filled with warmth and good cheer!

A Special Night

Come out and celebrate the season with your Northwood family as

we invite you to our Winter Concert. This year it will be our Grade 4

and 5 students presenting an evening of song and dance and drama.

This presentation will be held in the school gym and we ask that the

students in Grades 4 and 5 who are participating be at the school at

6:00 p.m. The concert will begin at 6:30 promptly.

Please bring a non-perishable food item or unwrapped gift as a

donation so we can help others less fortunate than we enjoy the

season.

The School Council will be holding a bake sale on this evening to help

raise funds for projects in our school.

Remembrance Day Assembly

This year our Grade 4 team put together one of the most memorable Remembrance

Day assemblies we’ve had at Northwood. Students read accounts of Canadian

Veterans while others acted out the laying of the wreathes. Students presented their

writing about the importance of observing the National Anthem. Our French choir

sang beautifully, reminding everyone that peace starts with each individual making a

simple good choice. Powerful media presentations prompted everyone to reflect on

the occasion and the values we embrace.

Nov. 17th to Nov.21st was Bullying Prevention and In-

tervention Week. Ms. Barlow began each morning with

a special announcement to bring awareness. On each day

of the week, the children focussed on a particular topic

and completed activities to reflect on their roles in our

school community. During various classroom activities,

students were asked to reflect on the rewards we reap

when we value diversity and uphold respect as a core val-

ue. Students made posters and completed various activi-

ties related to the topic. We know that together we can

make a difference. All were encouraged to Choose Ac-

tion!

Holiday Food Drive

The Northwood school community is participating in a Food Drive again this season.

Students are asked to bring donations of non-perishable food items to the school start-

ing from Dec. 1st to Dec. 17th. These donations will be collected and displayed under

our Christmas tree. All items collected will be dropped off at our local fire hall and

will then be given to the Salvation Army for distribution to needy families in the

Brampton community.

Please encourage your child to bring in a donation of non-perishable food. All items

should be at the school by December 17th.

Furthermore, in the spirit of giving, the Northwood School Council would like to

take the opportunity to announce that they will be accepting donations to the school

in their ongoing fundraising efforts. These donations are tax deductible. All fundrais-

ing monies go towards student programming and school events. Thank you in ad-

vance for your support.

Grade 2 Visit with Reptilia On November 6, Nick from Reptilia came to our school and taught all of

the grade two students about reptiles. The first animal he showed us was a

Russian tortoise whose name was Boris. He was cool because he had a

hard shell on his back and we got to touch him. After that, we saw an

alligator named Scar who had little spikes on his back. His teeth were very

sharp but he couldn't hurt us because his mouth was tied closed. Next was

Walley the blue-tongued skink. He really did have a blue tongue. Then

Nick showed us a spotted python named Bruce. We also saw Chilie, the tarantula, who is not a reptile but

we couldn't touch her. The last animal we saw was Skittles, a Brazilian Rainbow Boa. Many of us thought

she was going to be slimy but she wasn't. She felt really smooth. All of the grade twos had a good time

learning about animals when Reptilia came to our classrooms. Students in Mrs. Purdy's Grade 2 class

Grade 4 Trip to Jack Smythe

“On November 21 my class went to Jack Smythe Field Center. It

was great because we learned more about rocks and minerals and

we also got to walk around in the woods. It was fun to feed the

chickadees. I was really scared when the chickadee landed on my

hand because I was afraid that the chickadee was going to bite me.

I also enjoyed the part when we went rock shopping and the part

when we played the game where we had to find igneous,

sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. When we went rock

shopping I got a black and sparkly rock. You can’t see my rock

sparkle unless the sun shines on my rock. The animals at Jack

Smythe Field Center were creepy like the fox in the case near the

asked what peace means to them. They were challenged to write

their ideas, and to create an original drawing in the unique style of

Help your family stay warm this winter

Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when

working or playing outdoors:

Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school.

Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body.

Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra pair to replace

damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school,

on outings, etc.

Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself

when doing vigorous activities.

Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia.

If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an ex-

treme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia.

Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins.

If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.

Register for French Immersion by Jan. 30, 2015

Are you thinking of registering your child for Grade 1 French Immersion (FI) for the 2015-

16 school year? Registration for Grade 1 FI for the 2015-16 school year will be available

online at www.peelschools.org/French as of Monday Nov. 24, 2014 at 9 a.m.

The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 at 4 p.m. Registrants after that date will be

put on a waiting list.

The FI school for our area is Agnes Taylor PS. The phone number is (905) 451-2531.

Registration process

A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are avail-

able for students entering grade 1 FI. If the number of students registered by the deadline

exceeds the number of spots in grade 1 FI, a random selection process system will be used

to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program.

All students who make the registration deadline will be placed in a random selection process

and assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Spots are not assigned

on a first come, first served basis. Once students have been assigned to all available spots,

remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.

Some students will be automatically placed in grade 1 FI. To find out if your child does not

need to participate in the random selection process, and for more information about the ran-

dents who are not completely immunized and do not have a valid exemption may not be al-

lowed to attend school.
