What’s Happening in the LMS Library?

The library is getting a new look! We are re-arranging some bookshelves to make more productive space and highlight the non-fiction collection. This process will be happening in the library over the next several weeks.

Stop in as we move furniture around to make it easier to find materials.

On another note, we have received lots of new books over the past weeks and would love to share them with you. Look at the New Book section as you enter the library. New books are displayed next to the comfortable chairs. Stop in, have a seat and browse the new books.

School-Wide Fundraiser

The School-Wide Gertrude Hawk Fundraiser has ended. All orders have been submitted and the money has been counted. Thank you to all the students who raised money for your school! The breakdown of each grade’s contribution is as follows:

Grade 6: $4561.75 Grade 7: $4,095.30 Grade 8: $3,025.25 Total: $11,682.30

Delivery Date for all students is 12/8, after school, in the cafeteria. If you have large orders, please make sure you have transportation and a helping hand in picking up your orders.

Parents, are you ever wondering how you can participate in your child’s school? Join the Lebanon Middle School Community Facebook group! This page was created by one of our parents to help inform our community about the events, and news regarding the middle school. Every month, Parent Connections Meetings are held for parents to communicate with principals and a variety of the middle school faculty members on suggestions for various activities or ideas. Holiday Musical Concerts

The Holiday Vocal Concert is Monday evening, December, 15 at 7 PM. This will involve all the vocal groups: 6th grade chorus, 7/8 chorus and the All Star Singers. The snow makeup day is December 16.

The Holiday Instrumental Concert is Wednesday, December 17 at 7 PM. The snow makeup day is December 22.

¿Qué está Pasando en la Biblioteca de LMS?

¡La biblioteca tiene un cambio de imagen! Estamos reorganizando algunos estantes para hacer el espacio más productivo y destacar la colección de no ficción. Este proceso estará ocurriendo en la biblioteca durante las próximas semanas.

LMS WELCOMES NEW TEACHERS!

MR. PEARSON,

8TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES MR. SOULLIARD,

8TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES

There is a new resident in room 202 this year. Mr. Pearson is the new Social Studies teacher on team 8! He has 5 years of teaching experience in an alternative education setting and is currently teaching his first year in Lebanon School District. One of his history teachers in high school inspired him to enter the education field. Some of his hobbies include: running, coaching the cross country and track teams at Franklin & Marshall College, spending time with family and friends, and watching football. Mr. Pearson lives with his wife and his beloved dog, Louie. If you have a question about running or you are interested in racing him, stop by the north side hallway and see Mr. Pearson!

A new shining smile can be seen from the new team 7 teacher, Mr. Soulliard. He is currently the new eighth grade social studies teacher entering into his first year at LMS. Previously, he taught and tutored students at Sylvan Learning Center. Mr. Soulliard’s high school psychology teacher inspired him to become an educator. One of his many hobbies is to travel as he studied in Spain for 6 months while in college. His favorite food is sushi and his favorite television show is Breaking Bad. When asked to describe himself using one word, he answered: honest. Whenever you pass by room 207, please stop and say hello to Mr. Soulliard!!!

Hay un nuevo residente en el salón 202 este año. ¡El Sr. Pearson es el nuevo maestro de Estudios Sociales en el equipo 8! Él tiene 5 años de experiencia en un entorno educativo alternativo, y actualmente está enseñando por primer año en el Distrito Escolar de Lebanon. Uno de sus maestros de historia en la escuela secundaria lo inspiró para entrar en el campo de la educación. Algunos de sus pasatiempos incluyen: correr, entrenar al equipo de campo traviesa y pista y campo en la Universidad Franklin & Marshall, pasar tiempo con su familia y amistades, y ver fútbol americano. El Sr. Pearson vive con su esposa y su amado perro, Louie. Si usted tiene una pregunta acerca de correr o usted está interesado en competir con él, ¡pase por el pasillo del lado norte y hable con el Sr. Pearson!

Una nueva sonrisa brillante se puede ver en el nuevo maestro en el equipo 7, el Sr. Soulliard. El maestro de psicología del Sr. Souillard en la escuela secundaria lo inspiró para convertirse en un educador. Uno de sus muchos pasatiempos es viajar, ya que estudió en España durante 6 meses mientras que estuvo en la universidad. Su comida favorita es sushi y su programa favorito es Breaking Bad. Mathematics

Social Studies

December is a happy time of year and has been throughout history. From the ancient Roman tradition of Saturnalia to modern times, we have seen many cultures and religions save some of their biggest and most beloved celebrations for this month. Diwali, a traditional Indian holiday, actually leads off the season of joy. Then, we also see the Jewish holiday of Hanukah, the Christian holiday of Christmas, and the African-American cultural celebration of Kwanzaa. All of these traditions have deep roots in history. Speaking of history, the 6th grade continues their journey through the ancient past, while the 7th and 8th grade explore the founding of America and the early twentieth century, respectively. Have a great holiday season!

Science

Students from 6, 7, and 8th grade attended the Brossman Lecture at Millersville University on Thursday, November 20th. Students learned about fascinating careers in the field of Astronomy during a question and answer session with a guest speaker, Dr. Derrick Pitts.

As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, the math department is really working on vocabulary development and use of vocabulary in everyday math lessons. Some math terms that we are currently working on are listed by grade level below. Students should be able to define as well as appropriately use these terms.

6th grade: Distributive property, Least Common Multiple (LCM), Greatest Common Factor (GCF) 7th grade: coefficient, like terms, inverse operations 8th grade: Rotations, Reflections, Translations, and Dilations

In math class this year, our lessons are set up as modules for the various domains of mathematics. Students are assessed at the end of each module to check for mastery of the content. Daily homework and class work assignments are very important to reaching this goal.

Matemática

Estudios Sociales Diciembre es un tiempo del año lleno de alegría, y lo ha sido a través de la historia. De la antigua tradición Romana de Saturnalia a los tiempos modernos, hemos visto muchas culturas y religiones salvar algunas de sus celebraciones más grandes y más queridas para este mes. Communication Arts With one trimester down, students are entering another unit of study in either fiction or nonfiction, depending on their grade level. It is important to expose children to a variety of reading genres in order to become familiar with their components to make comprehension an easier task. Students will be taught more grammar skills in the next coming weeks in order to improve their writing skills. Not only will they be writing, but an emphasis on editing will also be vital in future classroom lessons.

Encourage your child to read outside of school! It helps to improve their reading fluency, spelling, and writing skills. Visit the library on a weekly basis and have your child research topics they may have questions about in their daily lives. Feel free to ask any Communication Arts teacher for helpful reading resources!

Technology

Use of Schoology Increases

We are excited to announce that the use of Schoology has been expanded to include all of Lebanon Middle School’s 7th and 8th graders. Excellent! Wait, what actually is Schoology?

Schoology is a learning management system that is being used in schools across the United States, including its use as part of Lebanon High School’s 1:1 initiative. The website (lebanon.schoology.com) is accessible to students 24-7 from most internet-enabled devices. In this monitored online environment, students are able to access class information, submit assignments, take tests, join in thoughtful discussions, and participate in a variety of other engaging educational activities. Not only does this format allow teachers be creative when coming up with valuable lessons, it also allows them to more easily respond to the needs of all learners through the use of 21st century technology.

Artes Comunicativas Con un trimestre finalizado, los estudiantes están entrando en otra unidad de estudio de ficción o no ficción, dependiendo de su nivel de grado. Es importante exponer a los niños a una variedad de géneros de lectura con el fin de familiarizarse con sus componentes para hacer la comprensión una tarea más fácil. ESOL

On November 12, 2014 – 8th grade intermediate ELL students presented fictional stories to their peers. Stories included original written works of fictional stories based on a setting, theme and object. Other stories written were based on comparing a dream house to a house purchased with $200,000 dollars- (Tie in with text literature – “A House of My Own). Finally, students wrote myths of their own - (Tie in with text literature – “ A Mother Who Lost Her Daughter). Here are a few examples of highlighted myths.

The Truth About Grass Written by: Dary Diaz

A long, long time ago the biggest snake was born. It was a huge and green snake. The snake always ate the humans that lived in the desert. At that time the world was flat and full of sand. One day Zeus morphed into a human and went down to earth. The snake thought it was a real human. The snake almost ate him but Zeus killed the snake with a big, white lightning. Zeus made a giant hole and threw the snake in there. Demeter saw it and felt bad. Demeter made beautiful, green grass grow out of the snake except in winter when Persephone was in the underworld. During the winter the snake’s soul goes to sleep but in the spring and summer the green grass grows and the snake is remembered.

In the beginning of time there was a girl name Rosita. She was one of the most beautiful girls in all of Greece. Men were all in love with her because of how beautiful she was. She was named after a beautiful flower. It was the softest and most delicate flower in the whole world. One day Rosita was on her way to meet one of her suitors. She had never seen him and was very nervous. She finally got to the place where she was going to meet him. she was frightened. When she saw the man he was the perfect man. He was handsome and gorgeous. so perfect! She fell in love with him and the years past. She could not deal with all the pain he caused her. She die of sadness and a new flower grew. The rose with thorns that hurt any that touches it.

In the heavens, Zeus was sad because his horse ran away with his wife Hera. He was so sad that for the first time he started to cry. Demeter seeing Zeus crying made it cold. It was so cold that Zeus’s tears turned white. Each tear was like a star. It was for the first time that humans saw this. So for every time Zeus is sad and cries, we see what we know now is snow.

ESOL El 12 de noviembre de 2014 – estudiantes en 8vo grado en ELL intermedio presentaron cuentos ficticios a sus compañeros. Los cuentos incluyen obras originales escritas de historias de ficción basado en un escenario, el tema y el objeto. Otros cuentos escritos estaban basados en la comparación de una casa ideal con una casa comprada con $200,000 dólares- (Relacionado con la literatura de texto – “A House of My Own). La serpiente casi se lo comió, pero Zeus mató a la serpiente con un rayo blanco grande. Zeus hizo un hoyo gigante y lanzó a la serpiente allí. Deméter la vio y se sintió mal. Deméter hizo que grama verde, hermosa creciera desde la serpiente, excepto en el invierno cuando Perséfone estaba en el mundo subterráneo. Durante el invierno el alma de la serpiente se va a dormir, pero en la primavera y el verano la grama verde crece y la serpiente es recordada.

Era guapo y precioso. ¡Tan perfecto! Ella se enamoró de él y los años pasaron. Ella no podía hacerle frente a todo el dolor que él le causó. Ella murió de tristeza y una nueva flor creció. La rosa con espinas que hiere a cualquiera que la toca.

En el cielo, Zeus estaba triste porque su caballo se escapó con su esposa Hera. Estaba tan triste que por primera vez se puso a llorar. Deméter, viendo llorar a Zeus, hizo que hiciera frío. Hacía tanto frío que las lágrimas de Zeus se volvieron blancas. Cada lágrima era como una estrella. Fue por primera vez que los seres humanos vieron esto. Así que cada vez que Zeus está triste y llora, vemos lo que conocemos ahora como nieve.

Art

Physical Education As the winter weather approaches, the boys physical education classes are crowding inside the gymnasium and testing out our brand new gym floor with our volleyball unit. Soon we will be moving onto basketball, and pickle ball while 8th grade students complete their next health unit.

We’ve got pottery! Mrs. Templin’s 6th grade classes have been very busy creating pinch pots and coil pots. The pots have had their first firing and all 6th grade classes are now in the process of applying three coats of glaze onto their pinch pots in preparation for the final firing. Coil pots will have the same treatment and be worked on a little later after we complete our pinch pots. Seventh grade classes are working on a two-step drawing/painting project that focuses on the design principle of rhythm. Classes have created repeat patterns, doodles, and shapes that will be incorporated into a Doodle Landscape painting. The 8th grade has an Aboriginal art project in process. After viewing a video, each student had the choice to create an X-ray drawing of an animal, or a dream painting, a kind of a map that depicts different Aboriginal landmarks and symbols.

Miss Kerwin’s 6th grade classes are creating symmetrical and asymmetrical insects out of cut paper. Her 7th grade classes are learning about masks from different cultures and are beginning to make their own masks. All 8th grade classes are studying the artwork of the Aboriginal people of Australia and drawing animals in their traditional x-ray style.

Arte

Educación Física A medida que se acerca el tiempo de invierno, las clases de educación física de varones se están reuniendo en el interior del gimnasio y poniendo a prueba nuestro nuevo piso del gimnasio con nuestra unidad de voleibol. Pronto empezaremos baloncesto y pickle ball mientras que los estudiantes de 8vo grado completan su próxima unidad de salud.

¡Tenemos alfarería! Las clases de 6to grado de la Sra. Templin han estado muy ocupados creando vasijas (pinch pots y coil pots). Las vasijas han tenido su primera cocción y todas las clases de 6to grado están ahora en el proceso de aplicar tres capas de esmalte en sus vasijas pinch pots en preparación para la cocción final. Las vasijas coil pots tendrán el mismo tratamiento y se terminarán un poco más tarde después que completemos las vasijas pinch pots.. Las clases de séptimo grado están trabajando en un proyecto de dibujo/pintura de dos pasos que se centra en el principio de diseño de ritmo. Las clases han creado patrones de repetición, garabatos y formas que serán incorporadas en una pintura - Doodle Landscape. El 8vo grado tiene un proyecto de arte Aborigen en proceso. Después de ver un video, cada estudiante tiene la opción de crear un dibujo de rayos X de un animal, o una pintura de sueño, una especie de mapa que representa a los diferentes monumentos y símbolos Aborígenes. Las clases de 6to grado de la Srta. Kerwin están creando insectos simétricos y asimétricos de papel cortado. Sus clases de 7mo grado están aprendiendo acerca de las máscaras de diferentes culturas y están empezando a hacer sus propias máscaras. Todas las clases de 8vo grado están estudiando la obra de los pueblos aborígenes de Australia y dibujando animales en su estilo tradicional de rayos X.

Team 7 Team 7 teachers would like to recognize the top students in each of their core classes. Each student exhibited excellent student qualities, such as superb grades, a positive attitude, a helpful hand, and an inquisitive state of mind on a daily basis. The team 7 teachers appreciate their help and effort in being excellent role models for our team! Congratulations to all students!

Communication Arts

For Communication Arts on Team 7, Ismar Franqui Segarra has been nominated for student of the month. Ismar’s favorite hobbies, include listening to music and surfing the internet. For Social Studies on Team 7, Trey Fox-Reich has been nominated for student of the month. Trey’s favorite T.V. show is Nickelodeon’s “Spongebob Square Pants”. For reading, Trey’s favorite book is “The Hunger Games.” He participates in soccer and basketball on the school teams. Related to these sports, Trey shared that he has been playing sports since he was 3 years old. When asked to describe himself using one word, Trey stated that he is different.

Science

The student of the month for science class is Yosian Guzman. Some of Yoshi’s favorite hobbies include going to the YMCA youth center and watching the show “Ridiculousness”. Yoshi’s favorite food to devour is pizza and his favorite book is the The Giver. If Yoshi had to describe himself using one word, it would be awesome! Something interesting about Yoshi is he loves riding on roller coasters. Keep up the good work, Yoshi!

Math

The student of the month for math class is Kayla Rohner. Kayla’s favorite hobbies include playing soccer and the violin. Kayla’s favorite show is” Pretty Little Liars” and one of her all-time favorite movies is Jumanfi. She enjoys eating hot wings and would prefer to read the book, “The Fault in Our Stars” whenever given the chance. If she had to describe herself using one word, it would be fhysterical. Something interesting about Kayla is she would much rather read than watch television! Way to go, Kayla!

Team 8 Team 8 would like to recognize the following students on a great job since the beginning of the school year.

Daniel Secoges is a well-liked student that participates in his school and home communities. This is his first year in cross country and Daniel is planning to try out for a throwing position on the track team. He enjoys outdoor activities with his Boy Scout group, Troop 412. His favorite activities during his free time are hunting and fishing. He is proud of his trophy pheasant. Team 8 is proud to acknowledge, Daniel Secoges as a student of the month.

Amanda Sanchez is a proud big sister. She is a studious and conscientious student that is adored by her peers. She is an avid reader and pianist. She spends her spare time playing with her new baby sister, practicing her piano, drawing and painting. Team 8 is proud to acknowledge Amanda Sanchez as a student of the month.

Team 9 Team 9 has chosen Heather Border as our top female student. Heather consistently has one of the highest grade averages on Team 9 this year. Heather has maintained straight A’s so far this year in each class for both marking periods. She is very friendly and always seems to have a smile and cheerful attitude. Heather will be the first person to help any student who may be struggling in class. She is a member of the Blue Hand Group and plays the piano. Heather loves all her classes and cannot choose a favorite. Her teachers can rely on her to be prepared for class and can expect only her best efforts on all of her assignments.

Our top male student is Gabriel Sulzer. Gabriel also maintains a straight A average in all his classes so far this year. He is one of our hardest workers, and is always answering questions in class. Gabriel has shown the utmost respect to his teachers and peers. His favorite class is Mr. Thomas’s social studies class. Gabriel is interested in the past, and enjoys learning about new people every week. He also likes to go rock climbing at Reading Rocks and shows a lot of skill for being new to the sport.

We are proud to have both Heather and Gabriel represent all of us as our top students from Team 9.
