究竟，他們為返學可以去到幾盡？肯亞的積仔和妹妹搵命搏穿越野生大笨象、長頸鹿之間每天來回步行30公里；阿根廷的卡羅斯風雨不改帶同妹妹騎馬攀山涉水；摩洛哥深山的薩希拉約埋朋友仔袋住活雞爬過連連山脈返學順便買餸；印度的森姆爾雖然只離學校4公里但行動不便坐在自製輪椅–膠凳加兩個轆–靠兩個弟弟每天拼命推回學校。我們發夢逃學，但世界上原來還有很多小朋友的夢想是上學，不怕路途有多艱辛，期望知識改變命運，即使現實總是殘酷，但對他們來説通往知識的道路也未免有太多險阻！

These children live in the four corners of the earth, but share the same thirst for learning. They understand that only education will allow them a better future and that is why, every day, they must set out on the long and perilous journey that will lead them to knowledge.Jackson and his younger sister from Kenya walk 15 kilometres each way through a savannah populated by wild animals; Carlito rides more than 18 kilometres twice a day with his younger sister, across the plains of Argentina; Zahira lives in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains who has an exhausting 22 kilometres walk along punishing mountain paths before she reaches her boarding school; Samuel from India sits in a clumsy DIY wheelchair and the 4 kilometres journey is an ordeal each day, as his two younger brothers have to push him all the way to school…ON THE WAY TO SCHOOL immerses us in the extraordinary routines of these children, whose sheer will to accomplish their dream leads them onto a path we have all walked but never like this.

賽馬會創意藝術中心（簡稱 JCCAC）所處建築物，前身是「山寨廠」（即上世紀六、七十年代本土家庭式輕工業）林立的「石硤尾工廠大廈」。內裡保留了昔日的工廠大廈建築特色，是一項獲得香港建築師學會「全年境內建築大獎」的改建項目。JCCAC於 2008

年開幕，以自負盈虧及非牟利機構的模式運作。JCCAC定位是一所多元化及對外開放的藝術村兼藝術中心，成立目的為提供文化藝術創作空間（藝術工作室和展示場地），以協助培育創意人才和推廣藝術文化，為支持香港的藝術發展出一分力。

JCCAC提供一個給藝術家／藝術團體工作，和讓公眾可近距離接觸藝術的環境。歡迎公眾於開放時間內自由參觀，親身發掘和感受藝術創意的氣氛。

藝術村作為藝術村，JCCAC是近140個各類型藝術家和藝術團體的運作基地。當中以視覺藝術為主（包括中西畫、攝影、陶藝、雕塑、版畫、玻璃藝術、多媒體裝置等），也有表演藝術（包括音樂、舞蹈、戲劇等）和其他應用藝術（例如設計、電影、社區藝術等）。藝術家很多是身兼多職的個體戶，使用單位為創作基地之餘，亦要分配時間在 JCCAC以外工作。JCCAC單位的使用性質以藝術工作室或藝團辦公室為主。有活躍提供展覽、節目或課程的駐場藝術家和藝團，通常會在單位外放置資料給訪客參考以便聯絡。有興趣參觀藝術工作室的公眾，可直接預約有關藝術家或藝團，或報名參加 JCCAC定期舉辦的公眾導賞活動。

藝術中心JCCAC內有茶藝館、咖啡室、創意工藝店等，另有特色小型展覽分佈各樓層空間，而正規場地包括「賽馬會黑盒劇場」和兩層「藝廊」展覽廳。各式獨立藝團活動，例如實驗性舞台演出、主題展覽、藝術興趣班等，一般會在週末舉行。另 JCCAC會定期主辦大型公開活動，包括每季的手作市集、每年12月的「JCCAC藝術節」、露天電影會、工作室導賞等。公眾可透過 JCCAC網站、每月出版的節目表或訂閱JCCAC電子通訊，獲得最新的活動資訊。

Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (aka JCCAC) is an award winning architectural conversion from the former Shek Kip Mei Factory Estate, which was a stronghold for cottage industries half a century ago. Opened in 2008 and operating as a self-financed, registered charity, JCCAC is positioned as a multi-disciplinary arts village and arts centre. It was established with the objective to play a part in supporting arts development in Hong Kong through the provision of space for creative work (arts studios and display venues), to help nurture young talents and to promote arts and culture in general.

JCCAC provides studio facilities for the arts community and a relaxed environment for the public to experience arts and culture. Visitors are welcome to stroll around freely during opening hours to discover for themselves the creative spirit of the place. Arts VillageAs an arts village, JCCAC is the operation base for nearly 140 artists/art organisations pursuing their work in a wide array of art forms, mainly in visual arts (including Chinese and Western painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, glass, multimedia installation, etc) but also in performing arts (e.g. music, dance, drama, etc) and applied arts (e.g. design, film, community art, etc). Many artists are self-employed and have to juggle multiple demands on their time split between their studios at JCCAC and outside projects. The units at JCCAC mostly serve as arts studios and/or offices, where at the door visitors can often find programme and contact information about the resident artist or arts organisation. Visitors interested to visit art studios may directly contact the artist for appointment, or may register to join in one of the regular public guided tours organised by JCCAC. Arts CentreJCCAC includes a tea house, café and craft shops. Artworks can be found dotted around the common areas, and there are two major venues, namely the Jockey Club Black Box Theatre and two levels of exhibition Galleries. Independent arts programmes (such as experimental stage performances, themed exhibitions and art workshops) are usually held on weekends. Regular public events presented by JCCAC include the annual JCCAC Festival in December, quarterly Handicraft Fair, rooftop film screening and public guided tours. Visitors may gain an overview of current programmes from the JCCAC website, the monthly published programme guide or by subscribing to JCCAC e-news. Our AspirationWe believe in the importance of the arts in helping to build a creative and civilised society. Through our work in helping to answer arts practitioners’ needs for arts studio and display facilities, we hope to play an active part in supporting the nurture of young talents and the general development of the arts in Hong Kong.

藝述心言 Intimate Portrait

A couple of years ago, rather late on one cool autumn’s night, the soulful

sound of a lone saxophonist resonated in the Central Courtyard. Its source

was a lanky pony-tailed figure leaning against the rails outside his studio

unit on the fifth f loor, improvising short sweet tunes on the instrument.

Apart from the appreciative ears of us nights owls still burning the

midnight oil at JCCAC then, unfortunately it also attracted the complaint of

a neighbour from the adjacent residential building struggling to get a good

night’s sleep, which abruptly ended the musical interlude.

When complimented on his multiple talents as musician and entertainer

(counting juggling, stilts, clown and fire breathing among his wide

repertoire), Lee Chi Man (Man), founder of The Fighting Blues, brushes it

off with a shrug and quipped, “jack of all trades (and master of none).” It

does not diminish the astonishing fact that he was self-taught in most of

them, “except for the conga; I went to Cuba to properly learn rumba on it

from an old master.” So what inspired him to be an artist/performer?

“Curiosity, perhaps; when I first saw people doing those things which

looked like real fun, I said to be myself ‘hey, I wanna have some of that

too!’” He frankly admits that he is a poor artist, with no steady income and

relying on freelance opportunities. But it is a choice he made and he is

happy about it. “I wouldn’t mind driving a Porsche and dining at a Michelin

three star restaurant! But eating a nice steaming bowl of wonton noodles at

the local ‘dai pai dong’ is not bad either. I love being an artist/performer

because the things that I do are fun and make my life interesting. Living

hand to mouth is a price that I pay for the freedom and happiness that suit

me, and I am fine with it.” It is a customary Chinese greeting to enquire

whether the other party has eaten (rice) yet. “I suspect that when my friends

and family ask me that, they probably mean it literally! I just tell them that

if there is no rice, I eat congee. Once you stop comparing yourself with other

people and complaining about what you don’t have, and learn to really

appreciate all the small and simple things that you do have in life, you can

live quite happily on very little.” Oh, and like Man, marrying a fellow artist

who understands and shares his values probably helps too.

Talented, philosophical and consummately optimistic - don’t you agree he

is quite the picture of the bohemian artist? Both romantic and practical, he

told us that his dream is to create a distinctively local circus troupe. While

he is figuring out how to realise that dream, Man is also organising 2 free

performances of “Non Monosodium Run Away Group” at the JCCAC

Festival this December, featuring various local groups and musicians,

including himself on the saxophone. Don’t miss the chance to hear him play
