Voskresenije is a vocal ensemble of nine mixed voices, all ofwhom trained at the St Petersburg Conservatoire and aresoloists in their own right. Their conductor, Jurij Maruk, waspreviously conductor at the Mariinskij Theatre and choirmasterof the St Petersburg Radio and Television Choir. He foundedVoskresenije in 1993, since when it has toured widelythroughout Europe each year.

Though their repertoire includes a few sometimes surprisingWestern European gems, most of the choir's programmesconsist of Russian sacred music (by composers from the 18th–20th-c) as well as treasures from the folk music of Russia. Thisrepertoire, all of which is for unaccompanied voices, emphasises their thrilling and highly distinctive Russian vocalstyle.

Three of Nepal’s finest traditional musicians tour Wales – and onlyWales – this October in their first performances outside the sub-continent. Nepalis regard music as a deeply spiritual activity andessential to every aspect of life, and this is a very rare opportunityfor Westerners to experience Nepali culture.

The trio’s repertoire includes tunes dating back to the 12th-c, andfrom different ethnic groups and castes across their very diversenation - women’s songs, ballads, religious and sacred music, andmusic relating episodes from the great Hindu epics such as theMahabharata and Ramayana. They perform on authentic Nepalifolk instruments, including Maadal (Nepali drum), Saarangi (a fourstringed viol), Baansuri (transverse bamboo flute), Jhaamtar (aplucked 2 stringed instrument), Majiraa (small brass cymbals), andShankha (conch shell).

Introduced by Ram Prasad Kadel, director of the Nepali FolkMusical Instrument Museum, Kathmandu, and the group’s mentor.

A Nepalese meal will be served in the Ucheldre Restaurant before theconcert. Please contact the Centre for more details, and to book. The Triowill also be attending today’s Clybod meeting (from 2 pm).

The Rep returns with a delightfulcomedy, set in the mid-fifties.Emma Hornett’s domestic empire, consisting of weary husbandHenry, loopy sister-in-law Edie andmalleable daughter Shirley, isthreatened by Shirley’s

engagement to Albert, a sailor (and you know what sailors are). Emma’sattempts to control the situation are undermined by down-to-earthneighbour Florrie Lack, Albert’s friend and subversive ScotsmanCarnoustie Bligh, and an outbreak of measles. Her seductive nieceDaphne doesn’t help; nor does the recollection of Edie’s Great Sorrow, nora cup of portentous tea-leaves. Eventually Emma’s relentlessmanagement goes too far and brings disaster; only the wisdom (and bitterexperience) of the Vicar restores the balance of the ’ornett ’ousehold.Warning: mothers-in-law may need sedation.

This charming comedy has delighted audiences throughout theworld since 1832. It tells of the peasant Nemorino who takessome magic elixir sold to him by a quack doctor, so that he canwin the heart of a wealthy land-owner, who (to spite Nemorino)has announced her marriage to a sergeant. The score is full ofmemorable tunes, including Adina’s ‘Prendi’ and Nemorino’s‘Una furtiva lagrima’, a favourite of tenors from Caruso to Gigli, and the aria that catapulted Pavarotti to fame. For thisproduction Swansea City Opera will be using their own wittyEnglish translation. Beautifully costumed, fully cast, with liveorchestra, and the Centre’s superb acoustics, this promises to bean evening not to be missed.

Enjoy a special elixir of your own by booking a pre-concertromantic meal in the restaurant.
