The Presidents Letter In January we began the process of forming a nominating committee to select 5 new members to the executive board. Our executive board needs replacements for 5 members that have graciously served for two years. If you are interested in becoming a board member, contact me or any of the executive board members and let us know. It is a wonderful way to become more familiar with the club, meet interesting people and have so much fun at the same time. Remember, if you have friends that would like to become a member now, the dues are half price until June. You will not want to miss this month’s general meeting. Our speaker is Abbie Parks. She is active in Cobb County historic preservation and it promises to be a most interesting meeting. The social committee has a Spring Fashion Show planned for us on March 1st. Models will be newcomer members. See page 13 for total info. More fun things are in the making for the rest of the year to keep our social schedule filled. BOOK EXCHANGE We continue to have our Book Swap at each General Meeting. Bring a book and take a book. You may take home with you any books that do not get swapped at the meeting or leave them on the table. Books left on the table are donated to AAUW Book Drop. You may also bring magazines for members to take.

February 16, 10 am At John Knox Church, 505 Powers Ferry Rd, Marietta 30067 We are pleased to have Abbie Parks to speak at our February meeting. Abbie is active in the Cobb area’s historic preservation as well as the redevelopment and growth in our area. She was also honored as Acworth’s citizen of the year in 2002. Abbie serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees and is the editor of the Landmarker, the Society’s bi-monthly newsletter. Also to her credits, she serves as Chairman of Cobb County’s Historic Preservation Commission and Advisory Committee for Kennesaw State University’s Center for Regional History and Culture. Abbie also chairs the Acworth Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. She and her husband, Boyd, restored an 1879 Victorian home of James & Emma McMillan on Main Street in Acworth in 1995 where they currently reside. She will provide an interesting mix of history and slides of the area. We hope you all can attend and enjoy Abbie and her interesting, informative and fun talk about the area where we live. Refreshments will be served by the Hospitality Committee.

Canasta: Canasta is played the first Monday of the month. Our next gathering will be Feb 1, from 10 am till 2 pm, at the East Cobb Senior Center, 3322 Sandy Plains Rd, Marietta, 770-528-5355. We play five deck Canasta. If you are unfamiliar with this version of the game, we will be happy to teach you. We usually have several tables and take a break for lunch. Please bring your lunch with you. There is a refrigerator for storing your food items. Coffee and soft drinks are available at the front desk (25 Cents per cup) as well as a soda machine (about $1) in the break room. We try to play at least four games, and rotate players after each game. It is not necessary to stay the entire day. The East Cobb Senior Center has its challenges relative to warmth. It is in our best interest to always bring a sweater!!! All Newcomers who have indicated an interest in Canasta are sent reminder e-mails. Plan to join us on the regularly-scheduled 2nd Monday Feb. 8, 10 am, at MarketPlace 120. The complete address is 562 Wylie Road, Marietta 30067 & telephone # is: 678-540-7511. This location is a wonderful art and antique gallery and is centrally located for Cobb residents. It is off of the South Marietta Parkway (the south 120 loop) near the intersection with Cobb Parkway #41 & behind a U-Haul office. Please bring your lunch with you this day. You may wish to pack it with an icepack since we do not have access to a refrigerator at this location. Coffee drinkers are welcome to use the on-site Keurig coffee maker for 25 cents a cup. Then on Feb. 22, 10 am, plan to join us at the East Cobb Senior Center at 3332 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, 30066, 770-509-4900. We arrive at 10:00 a.m. and start playing at 10:15 a.m. We take a lunch break around 12:30 p.m., at which time we enjoy the lunch that we have brought with us. There is a refrigerator & microwave available for us all to use. Coffee is also available at 25 cents per cup. We invite everyone to stay & continue play after our lunch break but understand if your schedule does not allow it that day. Play will continue until 2:30-3:00 p.m. Mark your calendars and plan to be part of this fun group. We are consistently drawing a record-breaking capacity attendance of 7 tables, which is 28 players at each gathering. Therefore, it is IMPERATIVE that you RSVP your intention to play as soon as you know that your schedule allows you to participate. Once all 7 tables are filled, a "Wait List" will be formed to be used in the event that there is a cancellation. We NEED to know if your plans change and you can not join us after all. Please call to Bev or Kari to advise us as soon as possible so that the next player on the Wait List can be contacted. All players are routinely sent reminder e-mails. When you RSVP, please tell Bev or Kari if you have a Mah Jongg set, mat, and a card table and/or chairs that the group can use that day. Mexican Train Dominoes
We will meet this month on Thursday, February 25th (always the 4th Thursday) 10 am. at the residence of Kat Benoy, Horizon at Wildwood [17 story] high rise, 3300 Windy Ridge Parkway, SE, Atlanta, GA 30339. Before parking, please pull up in the entry driveway & obtain a parking pass from the concierge. This will help Kat determine if she will host our game in her unit or on the main floor, entertainment area. Walk & Talk Groups….. East Cobb Walkers: aka: The Wacky Wednesday Walkers Leisurely Walkers Welcome! Contact: Sandy Warren Owens at [email protected] or by phone at (770) 992-8084. We meet every Wednesday, 9:15 am at Starbucks back parking lot – 31 Johnson Ferry Rd, at Papermill Rd., Marietta, 30068. From there we car pool a short distance to the end of Columns Dr. and park in their lot. Parking passes are required or pay a $3 fee - the reason for the car pooling. Many of us have the passes. Good to know: We walk along the side of the Chattahoochee River under the trees. The flat route is about 3 miles and takes about an hour. We return to Starbucks for refreshments afterwards. Many of us already know the benefits of a regular exercise program. Join us and enjoy the chance to socialize at the same time. In the event of inclement weather we will walk at the inside track on the 2nd floor of the North Bldg. at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church - 955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta, and enjoy their coffee shop afterwards.

February's wine 'drinking' will be held at Marketplace 120, 562 Wylie Rd. SE. #24 Marietta, Ga30067 If you attended last year, you know it was a great evening. Congratulations to Kari and her family. Her daughter gave birth to beautiful twin baby girls! Happy News from Kari Wetche, Message from Kari on December 29, 2015 Ellie Rose & Sophie Amelia Mitchell arrived on December 10--3 weeks ahead of their scheduled Cesarean. They were around 4 pounds each--perfect but small. They have enjoyed the "hospitality" of Northside Hospital Women's Center in their own "twin suite" where they have had controlled feedings & excellent care! We expect to get them home very soon! Whoopee! TWINS UPDATE!!!! Ellie & Sophie are home! Whoopee�!! Ellie was home for her 2:00 feeding on New Years Day and Sophie came home 24 hours later! Our first babysitting duty was to care for Ellie while Mom & Dad excitedly went to pick up Sophie! They are both enthusiastic eaters at 3-hour intervals! Their parents are sleeping in shifts to try to get some rest! Things should get easier for them as soon as the eating schedule is less frequent! Wanda Randall has surgery scheduled for mid-January and anticipates being in a cast for a few weeks, then in a boot for a few more weeks. Wanda welcomes hearing from her many Newcomers friends as she recovers. Our best wishes to Wanda.
