Heather reminded us that Fibre Arts Expo would definitely occur next year and encouraged the weavers to begin preparation of pieces to participate. A discussion occurred on entry fees and a possible prize as an extra encouragement to participation. It was explained that the entry fees had to charged to assist with the considerable outlay necessary to stage the event.

Dana McCown showed us a video illustrating part of her trip to Morocco and spoke of a co-op specialising in the making of little buttons woven by hand in a manner of the “turks head” design familiar to some, spinning, weaving and jewellery hand crafted with fine cottons wrapped over tiny tubes. The co-op was instrumental in giving lots of work to grandmothers. The video showed the Museum Boucherouite with its collection of hand made rugs, mostly made from recycled rags both in loop and cut pile in many colours to the original designs of the weavers. The weavers in the villages started using recycled rags when wool was no longer available .The Museum is said to be “the best activity in Marrakech”. It can be found on the web.

Elaine showed a black and white scarf in Mora wool in shadow weave, at 24 warps per inch. The overall effect was shades of grey and black. Mora wool is available from Glenora Weaving Supplies.

Philip wove a blue and white scarf in wool at 7.5 dpi on small Ashford sample loom. For Joan Claringbould.

Heather wove a table runner using a white spaced warp in cotton with a very effective weft of green and white paper string. She explained her technique of coping with the rather stiff string at the edges.

Jenny spoke of an idea she used at a demonstration workshop, using plastic food trays to make a small loom by cutting slots into the ends and winding a cotton warp into these. Odds and ends of yarn were used as weft. Both children and adults tried

this weaving and took the looms home with them. It was a great success.

Myrna brought two multi coloured striped scarves woven on a silk noil warp with mulberry silk weft of many colours.

The next meeting with be in December and will feature our Xmas lunch.

The group was started by Elaine Karpowicz, Carolyn Mclaughlin and myself not sure when, I’d say the early 2000s, as I came to Brisbane in 1998 and it certainly wasn’t done in the first couple of years. Original members included Myrna Henderson and Marion Standfast. We called it Experimental Dyers, as we did not intend to teach basic dyeing. This was a group to expand all our knowledge by researching and testing out methods that were new to us. Together we investigated many things: from mud cloth to marbling; from fibre reactive dyes to natural; and from block printing to screen printing. We were responsible for having the large table installed outside in the wet area. All the original members were weavers but we were soon joined by felters, paper-makers and others who wanted to expand their skills. Unfortunately (in my opinion) the name was changed last year to Dyehards, but the enthusiasm and experimentation continues. Sheila Virgo Below; Sampler quilt/tablecloths Heather brought in from the past few years to motivate us for 2018.

Joanna and Dyeanna flew in from their 2-week travelling tour of Tasmania eager to participate in the discussions for the 2018 of activities at our Christmas planning meeting. Before we got underway, Heather gave us the ‘Treasurer’s Report’ and then inspired us with the 2 scarves she has

woven from our September / October ‘25 Fustic and mordants project’. [Featured on the cover} This in turn spurred Marion and Joanna to speed roll and categorise their yarns from the same project ready to create an art piece for the new year. With many emailed suggestions and input from our team around the table, we have again prepared an activity set that will both refine our technical dyeing skills and introduce us to new techniques. However, an important decision for the 2018 Dye Hards schedule was agreed to at the outset of our discussions: The Dye Hards will claim the 3rd Friday of each month for their meetings starting in February. After our 12-month trial, members of the Dye Hards and the broader QSWFA community have requested this return to a Friday meeting. Our 2018 schedule will include: block stamping, tie dyeing, indigo, arashi shibori, madder, eco dyeing with avocado skins and seeds (start enjoying them over summer and clear

some freezer space until we are ready to ‘experiment’), creating tints with ’graduation dyeing’ and a ‘5 shades of…’ again pushing the boundaries of mordant mixing to the one dye source. As we enjoyed our festive lunch, Kym shared cultural customs of Norfolk Island living and Helen and Tricia discussed their plans for a forthcoming Textile and Fibre Arts tour of Japan during the northern hemisphere ‘Spring’ to experience the cherry blossoms. Tricia Smout has offered to take over from Helen for the 2018 “email broadcasts and RSVP’s” that we undertake before each meeting. Please contact either Helen or Tricia to join (or re- join) our list or to ensure your email details are up to date ready for our 2018 start. We look forward to welcoming back old friends and new members to our first meeting on Friday February 16th. The Dye Hards wish everyone a safe and creative festive season with Dyeanna and Yvonne venturing to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur for Christmas and New Year Celebration.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the festive season. This year's end-of-year Christmas Party will be kicking off around 10.30 am on Saturday 2 December. Please bring a plate to share, plus an unwrapped gift for our annual basket for the Bardon women's shelter. Personal care items are always appreciated; they need to be unwrapped for security reasons. If you want to participate in the Secret Santa exchange, please also bring a gift to a value of around $5.

Members looking for the minutes of previous board meetings can find them in the library - up on the top shelf in a row of black binders, our collection goes back at least ten years. The current year's binder is located in the middle of the row. The library also has back issues of Clippings for reading. Our membership form is currently being edited for clarity and to bring it up to date. The new version should be out shortly. For those of you on Instagram, we have an account at www.pintaram.com/u/qswfa to

show off pictures of our work and events, which Natasha Williams is managing for us. I would like to thank the Basket Cases - at their last meeting, three new people attended and the Basket Cases pulled together some materials and taught some new skills, with the result that all three women thoroughly enjoyed themselves and went away with a great impression of the group. As our publicity efforts increase, we are likely to get more people who are new to the group and to crafting generally. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to make visitors and new members welcome. If I don't see you before the end of the year, I hope that you and your loved ones have a happy and safe Christmas period and I will see you next year for more crafting! Alana Brosgra: Illustrator and Art Therapist

This presentation is special interest to all of us: Looking after ourselves and ways we can assist our friends and family for self expression and confidence. Mental health speaker Alana Brosgra has a focus on creative projects as stress relief and the positive health benefits. Being a graphic artist herself Alana may be of particular interest to the Book and Paper group.

Lani’s Art by Alana Brosgra Based in Brisbane, Lani’s art focusses on storytelling, promoting awareness around mental health, and using art to healthily communicate emotions and thoughts. Lani has travelled Australia delivering workshops and speaking about art and mental health in various states since 2013. Lani quotes:

1. “Art serves a purpose; to bring peace, calm and understanding to what can at times be a tumultuous life.”

“Art tells stories, it allows for interesting communication, it connects us not only to our own story but to something bigger than ourselves.”

When: General Meeting Saturday 2nd December

Place: Fibre Craft House 12 Payne Street Auchenflower This is our last General Meeting of the year that is 2017. We are finishing the year with a little Christmas cheer, since we have all been busily crafting in every minute we find, in our busy lives between family and work. It always amazes me looking back over the year the amount of outstanding creations produced by the group over the year. All members from all the groups are invited to attend the QSWFA Meeting at 10.30 followed by shared lunch about 12midday. Enjoy friendships and new and old before we take off for a well- earned break until we meet again next year in 2018 (where did that year go?) Bring a plate sweet or savoury to share. Optional Secret Santa: If you wish to participate, bring a $5 gift wrapped that would suit any of our lovely members.

The meeting of Sat. 4 Nov. was largely taken up with our visit from the Royal Flying Doctor Service's spokesman Rob, who gave an illustrated talk about the work of this wonderful service and accepted our cheque for the money we raised for the cause at the 2017 Ekka. Special thanks to Karlene for coordinating this effort. We also saw some of the scarves from this year's International Scarf Exchange, facilitated by Felicity;

members who participated now have the fibre they sent off back, after transformation by another participant from elsewhere. Not everybody had actually made a scarf; there were bags, beanies and the like as well. Karen Alpert displayed her recently-finished green beaded shawl, knitted in Road to China lace yarn, a luxurious blend of alpaca, silk and cashmere; the pattern was Snow Angel by Boo Knits. It's a crescent-shaped shawl that starts at the back of the neck and is liberally embellished with seed beads in a colour called "topaz".

I trust we will see lots of inspiring new work after the Christmas break; please bring your finished items to share with QSWFA members who may be in different interest groups. Joan Apthorp.

There will be no Hand Knitters' meeting in December; instead, the Hand Knitters are invited to join the Midweek Spinners at our

final meeting of the year, which will be Wed. 13 Dec. Please bring some food to share for lunch. Next year we will start our regular 3rd Wednesday meetings in February (Wed. 21st); we'll be looking

at Brioche knitting, a two-colour technique; more in February's Clippings. At our November meeting we looked at knitted edgings; there are so many ways of embellishing your knitting by adding a special edging. A particularly impressive

swatch was knitted by Paula Cockle using some of her

handspun wool. Paula also showed us a recently completed asymmetrical triangular shawl knitted from commercially spun 4-ply wool in four different colours and incorporating some areas of simple yarn-over lace and some rows of elongated stitches. This used so little wool that there's enough left for a couple more shawls! Enjoy your holidays, keep cool, and we look forward to seeing everyone feeling refreshed and rested in the New Year. Joan Apthorp.

Kathy popped in for a chat and then we all crowded around Geraldine who showed us some wonderful techniques she has in her repertoire. Cobweb felting looked incredible in a

shawl she had made at a workshop. This was so soft and light and looked totally amazing. Then a

2

demonstration of dipping strands of roving and applying to silk. The end result is a wonderful scarf.

Allison was so keen she tried out the technique immediately. Dora showed us her finished shawl made with that exciting silk mesh then she started recycling hats she had from Peru ($8 very bright colours) so we are all looking forward to how they are transformed.

Sandy brought in her finished

triangular shawl made from silk mesh in lovely blue colours then she started felting the scarfs with prefelts she had

made earlier. Erica came in to learn and look through the books in the library and found lots of lovely roving in

the emporium. Victoria started spinning silk which she made look so easy and the spun silk was sensational. Robert is felting shapes around an object as a resist then cutting it open to form wonderful hair clips or interesting attachments. Next meeting will be our Christmas party so please bring a plate and a small Secret Santa gift.

Our solar panels have produced 3.19MWh this year. With 68% (2.16KWh) exported to the grid.

This means a CO2 Emission Saving of 1,249.04 kg. We are very pleased with the performance of the solar panels and the tesla battery.

There is a box in the hall on the stage ready to pop your donations in for a local women’s shelter.

Please pick up something next time you are at the supermarket or shopping centre. Think toiletries, perfumes, treat foods, or if you want to put something handmade in there that would be super also.

Show and Tell: Tricia showed the books people had made for the recent Nostalgia-themed book swap. There were so many different ways of interpreting the theme, and a wonderful array of techniques and materials had been used. Tricia also showed a mini casebound book she made at the Meet-up Book Group at The Edge at the State Library. She brought the postcards from the recent Papermakers postcard exchange which had the theme of 25 (for their silver anniversary). She also showed the Korean papers she received when she entered the Jeonju Paper Fashion exhibition. Rosemary, Wendy D and Renate brought the books they had made

following our Secret Belgian Binding activity last month. Joan spoke about her research on the “Japanese Language of Flowers”. Karin showed two Leaf Books, both beautifully printed and each with its own unique protective covering. She also showed items made by repurposing items from our give-away table. Di spoke about her visit to the Makers Centre in Burnie in Tasmania and showed photos of the paper sculptures on display there.

2

Maria showed “The Maverick Soul”, a book by Miv Watts celebrating creatives living on their own terms surrounded by the things they collect. Wendy McH showed her initial version of her Nostalgia swap book, which is a dos-à-dos-à-dos binding. Marilena showed the cards she received for her recent birthday, including Judy’s card with a painted Tyvek background and matching gift-wrapping. She also brought an altered mini pizza box incorporating torn serviettes and paint. Rubbings Project: We examined the finished results of this year’s collaborative project. People had made books incorporating their exchange piece

as well as their own rubbings. There was an amazing variety of themes and techniques, and each participant described their creation. Activity: Annette showed us how to make a book with a concertina origami spine. It will be interesting to see how people use this creatively in future projects. Initially we had also planned to make a blizzard book, but we decided to postpone that activity until early in 2018.

OUR NEXT MEETING on 11 DECEMBER Secret Santa exchange: Each December we have an optional exchange with a specific theme. The theme for 2017 is a Christmas wreath, which must be predominately made of paper, but can be any size (small earring size to large door size). You can even make it so it pulls apart to form a chain or garland! If you want to participate, wrap your finished wreath (so it remains anonymous) and bring it to the meeting in December, and you’ll receive someone else’s in exchange. Shared Lunch: bring food to share for our Christmas lunch. Activity: Wendy S will show us how to fold a Christmas tree from a single sheet of paper. Bring a pair of scissors, and maybe any small decorative elements to embellish your tree (glitter, small stars, stickers, etc) MEETINGS IN 2018 5-8 January: We will enjoy four days of crafty fun at the annual COOK- UP. There will be on-going rusting, teabag dyeing and collage activities as well as specific daily activities including 3D folded pyramids, working with gesso, and the ‘odd-shaped pages’ book.

4

12 February: Our first meeting of the year is a sale and swap day. We will also have a short activity, and plan our activities and projects for the year ahead. 12 March: Tricia will demonstrate the Blizzard Book which is great for storing postcards or other souvenirs. Tricia Smout

On November 5th, we had a surprise waiting for us as three people turned up for a workshop which was advertised on the internet but no one had bothered to let us know. We had no fibre prepared and soaked for them so there was a frantic whip around to find anything they could turn into a basket. However they had a pleasant day and wove a small basket to take home.

Lyn brought along a palm inflorescence wall hanging edged with dracaena leaf rope and three varieties of gum nuts from South Australia. On the day Lyn worked on a cane basket with a coloured

wire insert. Doris completed a second “God’s eye” on a large melon basket that she had started several months ago. The frame of the basket is orange trumpet vine and the God’s eye is made of sea grass. George worked on forming a large container out of an Alexandra palm leaf base. She stitched it together with blue rope. Mary made stick structures tied together with jute twine, to

be used in an exhibition at Gympie. Rachel wove an upside down Cornucopia style

2

Christmas tree, using Jacaranda leaf spokes and raffia. Angela spent the

first half of the day constructing three frames for basket work or to be used for holding a Christmas installation. Then she

had difficulty working on an Alexandra palm basket as she could not keep up the moisture to the pieces. Kathleen made a flower holder in a

Cornucopia style using Jacaranda spokes and raffia. Jill worked on small forms of diagonal plaited paper strips to make a series of shapes to be displayed as a group. Floss finished off a basket using rope from lost fishing nets which were washed up on the beach. The handles she used were fishing net floats. She also brought along a 4

over 4 basket made using Pyrostegia (orange trumpet vine) and sisal. Jill
