at our Club. Remember, its not too late to contribute to the staff holiday bonus fund or to add to your previous contribution.

Finally, I hope amidst the activity and commitments, you take time to reflect quietly and peacefully on the meaning of the season. I know it means many things to many people. For me and my tradition, after you strip away the parties, decorations and presents, it is the recognition of nothing less than the incarnation of God who humbled Himself to walk among humanity. Whatever your tradition, I hope the holiday season is a time of peace and an opportunity to reflect on those things that matter most in life. Here’s to a sparking holiday for us all and a healthy and prosperous 2012.

Yours in fellowship and service,

THOMAS C. ALBUS - PRESIDENTJUSTIN S. FOWLER - FIRST VICE-PRESIDENT • ROBERT N. HAGNAUER - SECOND VICE-PRESIDENT JOHN S. KINGSTON - TREASURER • DONALD A. STORK - SECRETARY

Fellow members,

Each month when I sit down to write to you all, I look to the

coming month and think “this is probably the best month of the year at the Club.” Maybe I have a poor ability to assess the future or maybe we just have a great club which doesn’t have a “down month.” To be sure, the special traditions and opportunities for great times are many during the holiday season.

Christmas, to me, is primarily for children, and who can argue with a club to which Santa makes a total of three visits! Whether your preference is breakfast with Santa Downtown or dinner with Santa at the West Clubhouse, be sure to say hello to St. Nick. By the way, St. Nick is a longtime member and former member of the Board of Governors! Our membership roster is a distinguished one indeed.

Both clubhouses are perfect spots for special holiday meals as well. For my family the Downtown electric train is the perfect place to occupy my children and the opportunities for private rooms and alcoves keep my kids from ruining the dinners of other members! One great Christmas tradition of our club will occur on Monday, Dec. 5, when the MAC Apollos spend a day visits nursing homes in the community, singing carols, handing out candy canes and bringing good cheer to the sick and elderly (St. Nick will come along, too). If anyone wants to join us on the MAC

bus, let me know and I’ll save you a seat. There may be a wee drop of egg nog on that bus for you as well...

The holidays have not seen a drop off in the activities of the Club’s Board, committees and executive staff. I have recently presented a mid-year report to the Board at the halfway mark of my time as President. I have included this report for your review at pages 28 and 29 of this month’s Cherry Diamond. Please take some time to review it. There is quite a bit of information in there, and I hope you will agree, we are moving in the right direction as a club.

The holiday season is no time to neglect your workout routine, and the Club is ready to help you work off the goodies. Additional improvements to the West and Downtown workout facilities, including equipment, paint and flooring have recently been completed. The squash pavilion will be busy and we have a brand new pro, Yago Cornes, to assist Heidi Mather with lessons and clinics. The basketball leagues and pick-up games are in their prime time. However you like to get your exercise in, be sure to do it (and remind me to do the same when you see me).

As we all gravitate to the Club for meals, fellowship and parties, I am always struck by the work ethic and good cheer of the staff. This is a time of relaxation and merriment for a lot of members, but it is the busiest time of year for many of our staff. Their good humor and attention add so much to the holiday experience

Santa Delivers Early Holiday Gift to Members

Register for Club Events Online

The holiday season is a busy time for everyone. Between buying gifts, wrapping, decorating and preparing for Dec. 25, you

often have little time to think about anything else. Save yourself time this holiday season by registering for events through the MAC website. The new site makes it convenient and easy to register with just a few clicks. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with details of your reservation. Since the launch of the new website, online reservation activity has increased, including members who have never previously utilized the online reservation option. Take advantage of a useful resource that many of your fellow members have already discovered. This holiday season register online to attend the variety of events at both Clubhouses.

Here is a step-by-step tutorial to register for a Club event.

1. Registration is required to make event reservations online. An email was sent to all members on Tuesday, Nov. 1, detailing how to register. If you need help registering your member account, contact [email protected].

2. After you are logged in, click on “Member Central,” then “Calendar.” The current month will be displayed, and the current day will be highlighted.

3. Click on the event you wish to register for. You will be shown the full description of the event, including times, prices, locations and more. You can then register for the event by clicking on the “Register for the Event” button. (Tip: You can also view events in a list view as well as do a quick search with various options.)

4. After clicking to register, you will land on the registration page. You will be asked to provide additional details for your registration. Some questions are mandatory in order to register and are marked. Once you have provided the requested details, click “ok.”

You can view all of the events you have registered for under the “My Bookings” tab on the calendar page. Within the “My Bookings” tab you have the option to update or delete your registration. from your holiday celebrations with the help of a personal trainer. Christine Elsesser comes to the MAC with more than 10 years experience in health and fitness. Her passion for fitness is the driving force behind her personal training career. She grew up playing competitive golf and tennis and has been an avid runner for many years.

In addition to her personal training certification, Christine is certified in group fitness, barbells and more recently Hard Body Yoga. She also coaches girls running. Because it is never too late or too early to begin a fitness regimen, she looks forward to training members of all fitness levels and ages.

“Incorporating all aspects of fitness: stretching, weight training, cardiovascular workouts and a healthy diet are critical to your well being,” Christine says.

Christine also teaches two group fitness classes at the Downtown Clubhouse. She teaches Hard-Body Yoga on Mondays at 5:45 p.m. Hard-Body Yoga works every major muscle group several times without even picking up a weight. The class combines strength training with yoga techniques to create a strong physique.

With the holiday season approaching, that means plenty

of parties and lavish feasts. For many people, all of that celebrating brings with it a few extra unwanted pounds. So what follows are the New Year’s resolutions to get in shape and lose weight.

At the MAC, the athletic facilities always see a spike in attendance following Jan. 1, but some people have a difficult time sticking with their New Year’s resolutions. If that has been you in the past, try a new strategy to keep you motivated to meet your fitness goals. Maybe you need a little competition to help give you that extra incentive.

Inspired by the NBC Show the Biggest Loser, in January the MAC will be hosting its own weight loss contest. Throughout the process, weight loss experts will provide direction that

has been proven to get results. The following are the highlights of the program:• Dates: Jan. 16- March 23, 2012• Deadline to sign up is Friday, January 6. • Cost is $115 per person and includes beginning and ending health assessments, six 1-hour workshops covering nutrition, beginning and final weigh-ins, as well as bi-weekly weigh-ins to track the status of all the contestants over the 13 weeks. • Discounted rates on personal training sessions during the contest dates.• The winner of the contest will be the person who loses the most % of weight loss. • Prizes will be awarded to the winner and runner-up.

Shape Up Through the MAC’s Biggest Loser ContestThe only thing you have to lose is weight

Sign up today. Everybody who enters the MAC’s Biggest Loser contest is a winner. The only thing you have to lose by participating is weight. Members who work out at Downtown or West can participate. The nutrition classes and assessments will be hosted Downtown. Contact Rick Schneider at 314-539-4434 to sign up.

that allows you to socialize while burning calories, then join one of the MAC volleyball nights at either clubhouse. Both clubhouses offer evening games.

Hit the court at MAC West on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Games are adult, co-ed and open to all skill levels from beginner to experienced.

The Downtown Clubhouse has Thursday evening pickup games at 5:30 p.m. Join your fellow members for a fun night and a great workout.

There was a great crowd gathered on the tennis courts and in the multi-sport facility to catch the action. The top eight fencers in each division were awarded with medals. Racquetball RecapBy: Dave Schwent, Racquetball Pro

The Club Championship will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 9

a.m. to noon. Contact Dave Schwent at 314-220-7275 if you are interested.

Come join the Handicapped Tuesday Night League. This league is a great bunch of guys, and all levels are welcome. Handicaps will adjust as one ends and the next begins. The handicapped has increased the intensity, which in the end helps us all to get in better shape.

Try to book your racquetball court times farther in advance, if possible. We have several high schools playing their matches on three courts from 3:30-5 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays. We have 22 high schools participating, which is giving the MAC some great exposure with the hope that the kids involved will someday become members.

If you are looking to play in racquetball tournaments around town, our next tournament is the “Holiday Charity Classic” at Concord Vetta Sports Complex on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Contact Dave Schwent at 314-220-7275 if you are interested.

St. Louis is regarded as the soccer capital

of the United States, so it is only fitting that the Missouri Athletic Club is home to the top individual honor in the sport. On Friday, Jan. 6, find out who will be recognized as soccer’s next rising young star at the MAC Hermann Trophy Banquet.

The MAC has been home to college soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy since 1986. Over the years, some of the biggest names in American soccer have come to the Club to claim the prestigious crystal soccer ball trophy, which is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the United States. The trophy represents the highest individual achievement in the sport. The jerseys of the past winners like Mia Hamm,

Kristine Lilly, Claudio Reyna and Alexi Lalas are on permanent display in the Sportsman’s Club.

All Division I soccer coaches will get to vote for the award in December. The top three male and female finalists will be

invited to the MAC for the banquet. Make plans now to be a part of this

celebration of soccer. Experience the excitement and the drama at the press conference when the winners are announced. Enjoy a fabulous meal and an outstanding event program. The 2011 Missouri State High School boys champions will also be honored during the banquet program.

The top three men's and women's finalists will be announced in mid-December. To keep up with the latest news regarding the MAC Hermann Trophy, go to mac-hermann-trophy.org.

Berkman Headlines the 42nd Annual Jack Buck Sports AwardsCardinals Slugger to Receive the MAC Sports Personality of the Year Award

For more than a decade Lance Berkman was a Cardinal nemesis.

The slugging switch-hitter was a perennial All-Star for the Houston Astros.

Following an injury-plagued 2010, the Cardinals took a chance on their former rival by signing him to a one-year contract. The gamble paid off as a rejuvenated Berkman put together one of his best seasons in several years, as he won the 2011 National League Comeback Player of the Year Award and helped the Cardinals win the World Championship. Berkman will cap off a memorable 2011 when he visits the MAC to receive the Sports Personality of the Year Award. Berkman becomes the 18th Cardinal to win the annual award honoring the top St. Louis sports figure.

Berkman, along with other distinguished St. Louis sports figures, will be honored at the 42nd annual MAC Jack Buck Sports Awards on Thursday, Dec. 15. Former Blues forward Keith Tkachuk will receive the Legends Award. McKendree University basketball coach Harry Statham, the winningest men’s college basketball coach, will receive the Carl O. Bauer Award. Former Mizzou broadcaster John Kadlec will receive the Burnes/Broeg Award.

The event is already a sellout, but you can still hear the best sports banquet in St. Louis. Tune in to KMOX Radio on Friday night, Dec. 16, to listen to the Jack Buck Awards.

As September wound down, Cardinals fans did not hold much

faith of seeing the team take the field in October. After beating the Braves for the wild card spot, then defeating the Phillies and the Brewers in post-season play, the Cardinals made it to the World Series against the Texas Rangers. Stretching the series to seven games, the Cardinals won their 11th World Series title.

The MAC was the post-season headquarters for members and their guests. The Downtown Clubhouse served up delicious food and cold beverages at fantastic prices. Many members took the MAC shuttle to Busch Stadium. The Club provided the perfect gathering spot to root the Redbirds on to the World Series Championship..

MAC Staff

West Pro Shop/Front Desk

When arriving at MAC West for tennis, dinner or a workout,

often the first people to greet you are the friendly faces in the Pro Shop or front desk. The staff is the hub of information at the West Clubhouse. Whether a member or guests needs direction to a specific area of the Club, wants to make a court reservation or has a question about an upcoming event or program, the front desk staff have you covered.

The pro shop/front desk staff consists of three full-time employees: Diane Tussey, Pro Shop manager; Carrie Davinroy, Pro Shop supervisor and Amy Lister, evening supervisor. On the weekends and during other high traffic times, the staff has 10 part-time attendants.

Diane Tussey has worked at the MAC for 18 years. She started as the Jack Buck Grill manager at the Downtown Clubhouse in 1993. After seven years Downtown, Diane moved out to MAC West. She currently has many roles. Not only is she the Pro Shop manager, but she is also the Child Care manager and the Human Resources representative at the West Clubhouse.

With a BS in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Missouri State, Diane came to the MAC with a lot of experience, including an internship at the Marriott Tan-tar-a. She is responsible for staffing and budgeting for the Pro Shop and Child Care. She also orders the merchandise in the Pro Shop. Whenever there is a new hire at the West Clubhouse, Diane is accountable for the paperwork. You can primarily find her at the West front desk, a position in which she enjoys the member interaction. “I love the family-oriented atmosphere at West,” Diane said. “One of the best parts of my job is the interpersonal relationships I am able to form with members and employees.”

One of Diane’s favorite memories in her 18 years at the MAC occurred when she was managing the Jack Buck Grill Downtown. The Grill had just undergone renovations and former St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Jerry Berger stopped in for lunch. “The next day, my aunt called me up and told me to look in the paper,” Diane said.

“My picture was featured in his column with General Manager Larry Thompson, James Godfrey, Jr. and Keith Barket.”

Diane works closely with her fellow Pro Shop

staff to keep things running smoothly. Carrie Davinroy has been the Pro Shop supervisor at West for 13 years, and her position is multi-faceted. Her main responsibilities include stringing tennis and racquetball racquets, making court reservations for tennis and racquetball, answering the phones, assisting in ordering pro shop merchandise, pricing and placing merchandise and helping answer members’ questions. Carrie enjoys the interaction she gets with members. “We are like the hub of information for members coming to West,” she said. “We are always happy to help answer any questions someone may have.”

In the evenings, Amy Lister takes over as supervisor. Amy has worked at the Club for four years. She has always been in the service industry and

Beer-lovers were in for a special treat at the Craft

Beer Tasting at the Downtown Clubhouse. Six craft brewer-ies were on hand with samples of their best beers. Attendees received a complimentary tasting glass. Breweries included: Six Row Brewing, 2nd Shift Brewing, 4 Hands Brewing, Perennial Artisan Ales, The Civil Life Brewing Company and Urban Chestnut Brewing Company.

The beer tasting was the first event hosted by the Craft Beer Club, a new Club Within the Club at the MAC. The Craft Beer Club’s mission is to learn about all craft beers that are available in the St. Louis area by meeting brew masters and owners of local breweries, and sampling their products. Are you Platinum?

Many of your fellow members are saving $1,200 a year on

their dues as part of the Platinum Partnership program. The program allows you to “partner” up with a new member to receive reduced dues. Currently, the Platinum Partnership program saves you $100 a month.

The Platinum Partnership is an easy way for MAC members to enjoy Diamond Club benefits at a reduced dues level. Any current Resident or Resident Diamond Club member may sponsor a new Resident Diamond Club member as their Platinum Partner. Both members/partners will enjoy a lower monthly cost by splitting the reduced Platinum Partnership dues as long as they both remain members of the Club. Two new members who wish to join the Club together as Resident Diamond Club members may also form a Platinum Partnership. Each Platinum Partnership member will receive all Diamond Club privileges and benefits (except the quarterly food & beverage minimum will apply to each Platinum Partnership member). If you or your partner resigns from the Club, the remaining member will resume regular Resident Diamond Club dues with the opportunity to sponsor another new member/partner and return to the Platinum Partnership.

Jim Foushee recently joined the Club as part of the Platinum Partnership program. He was encouraged to join the Club by his fraternity brother Jeff Moore. He and Jeff “partnered” up, and Jim could not be happier about his decision to join. “I have only been a member for a short time, but I can honestly say this is the best money I have spent in a long time,” he said.

An avid exerciser and father to two teenage daughters, Jim was looking for a place that the whole family could enjoy. “I would encourage other members to find a partner to join through the Platinum Partnership simply due to all of the rewards and amenities that both Clubs have since you have unlimited access to both Clubhouses,” Jim said.

He said the experience of joining through the Platinum Partnership program was easy and enjoyable with very little paperwork or red tape. And once you fill out your application to join, you can instantly start enjoying the amenities of the Club. “I had a temporary card and a locker that afternoon, so I was able to come over the same day after work and enjoy the Club,” said Jim.

If you are a Resident member and have a family member, friend or business associate at the Resident level that is interested in joining the Club, now is the perfect time to introduce them to the MAC. For more information, contact Patti Cundiff, 314-539-4429, or Julie Kueper, 314-539-4408.

The Platinum Partnership replaces the Each One/Reach One program. Over the past year, 243 new members joined through the program. David Kirby won the end of the program drawing for one-year free dues.

Trunk-R-TreatThe lower parking lot at MAC

West was filled with festively decorated cars, candy and dozens of kids in costumes. The annual Trunk-R-Treat festivities were a huge hit with members and their guests. Before feasting on a deliciously spooky spread in the Stan Musial Grill, kids played Halloween-themed games and rocked out to tunes by DJ Joe. Following dinner, there were s’mores right off the fire and more dancing. Just as dusk set, trunk-r-treating began. Princesses, Cardinals players and even the rally squirrel made their way from car to car collecting sweet treats. Awards were given to the best decorated cars. This year’s winner was the Smith family. In second place was the Kagan family followed by the Niemann family.

President’s Mid-year report November 16, 2011

Fellow Governors-This meeting marks the midway point of

the 2011-2012 Board year. I feel this is an appropriate time to review what we have done and look forward to what we hope to accomplish by the time the current officers’ terms expire on May 17, 2011.

As you know, the past six months have been very busy. As you also know, this Board year has been and will continue to be a year of transitions. The work we have completed in cooperation with management and staff has positioned us well to manage the club’s finances, provide for capital needs and contingencies and fight the stubborn attrition of members.

FinanceBudget - Operational Finance

The steady losses in membership head count we have sustained over the past three years have placed tremendous pressure on our operational budget. Rather than assess the membership, management and the Board identified and approved approximately $1.1 million dollars in budget cuts for FY 2012 and 2103. These cuts have allowed the club to forecast a positive cash flow of approximately $425,000 for combined FY 2012 and 2013 (this cash will be used to reduce short term debt) with no impact on member services and with no provision for a brightening membership picture. Indeed, the FY 2012 and 2013 budgets assume continued steady membership losses so we can “hope for the best but prepare for the worst” and still remain a vigorous organization.

Long-term Debt Service and ReductionAs a club, we are not only servicing our

long-term debt, which currently totals approximately $9.4 million, but we are aggressively retiring long-term debt. The FY 2012 and 2013 budgets passed by the Board in August call for the reduction of over $1.6 million dollars in long-term debt, or approximately fifteen percent of principal, by the end of FY 2013. Additionally, the club will retire approximately $100,000 of debt it incurred in the construction of a new squash court by the end of FY 2013.

Capital ReservesAlthough our operational budget and debt

service and retirement are looking favorable. One area of concern identified by the Board is our capital reserves and contingency funds. Our FY 2012 and 2013 budgets make only minimal provisions for such spending. Accordingly, we have undertaken to set aside

a capital reserve/contingency fund to provide for such areas of need. We are asking the membership for voluntary contributions in three phases. First, the current Board and past Presidents have committed to a combination of monthly giving and one-time gifts which will total in excess of $70,000 over the next two fiscal years. Next, we have begun asking past Board members and other club leaders who have previously pledged support. We are hopeful this next phase of solicitations (from a much larger pool of members) will place our total over $200,000. Finally, after the holiday season, we will ask the entire membership to consider a voluntary capital contribution. By early 2012, our goal is to have $400,000 in capital reserve/contingency fund pledges. The fund will only be diminished with a vote of the Board of Governors and, hopefully, will be an important source of comfort to the membership, staff and the club’s lenders as we head into sunnier financial days in FY 2014 and beyond.

Revenue EnhancementDespite the unfavorable economic

conditions, the club has had some success stories in terms of revenue. The most encouraging has been the improvement of our overnight rooms business. Helped by strategic investments in room refurbishment and strong marketing lead by staff, our overnight room business has been strongly profitable despite being, by comparison, flat to unprofitable in the relatively positive recent fiscal years of 2007 and 2008.

The opportunity to propose the lease of approximately 5,000 square feet of space in our downtown clubhouse to the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) is a great opportunity for our club to partner with another old-line community institution. A lease would provide additional revenue in the form of rent and increased business for our catering operations, as well as a chance to showcase our beautiful club to thousands of professionals who are potential club members. We expect to know of BAMSL’s decision by early 2012. Our fine proposal was created with excellent cooperation among the executive staff.

Strategic Assets The club has no plans to liquidate

strategic assets, such as the surface parking lot immediately west of the clubhouse or any of the club’s extensive art collection. However, a subcommittee of the Finance Committee has been convened to assess those strategic assets available to the club. This subcommittee is led by the Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee. Should any strategic assets ever be considered for sale, it is important that such a sale be

done in a way favorable to the club, and the existence of this committee will ensure that the club treats its strategic assets wisely.

MembershipPlatinum Program

This month the club rolled out an innovative and in ways unprecedented membership promotion, the Platinum Program. The Platinum Program rewards a new Resident Diamond Club member and a sponsoring Resident Diamond Club member with a $100 discount on dues for as long as both members remain at the club. This program includes, in my view, three important principles that have come to be accepted by the Membership Committee and Department, (1) a successful membership incentive should address dues because keeping dues as low as possible for everyone is key to membership success, (2) the initiation fee is important both as a membership selling point and a symbol of the value of membership for current and prospective members and (3) retention should be part of any membership campaign because, all other things being equal, it is easier and better to retain a member than to recruit a new one.

Initiation FeeThe initiation fee is back, practically

speaking, for the first time in three years and, in my opinion, that is a welcome sight. As I mentioned above, the initiation fee is an important symbol of the value of club membership for our members. Additionally, it enhances member retention and will ultimately become an important source of revenue.

Membership TrendsThe rollout of the Platinum Program has

been a success even though the program is still very new. Using full time equivalents to resident members, we are slightly ahead of budget for FY 2012 as of mid-November. If we can continue our momentum into the historically positive holiday recruiting season, we could get significantly ahead of our budget but the last few years have counseled against such optimism. For the next few months, we will closely monitor the performance of the Platinum Program.

ManagementAugust 2011 Adjustments

Larry Thompson and the executive staff have done an outstanding job implementing the position eliminations required by the FY 2012 budget. First, fair and generous severance agreements were presented to and accepted by the two fine, long-time employees who occupied the positions that were eliminated. Next, the remaining

executive staff quickly addressed the considerable responsibilities that had previously been the responsibilities of those departed employees. In particular, Joe Dietz, Jeff Tuhro, Darrin Harnetiaux, Rick Schneider, Julie Kueper and others have stepped up to keep both clubhouses running smoothly. Of course, Larry Thompson himself has done a great job moving between both clubhouses, and I think both the West employees and members have enjoyed seeing more of him.

GM Search CommitteeThe Board, through its Search Committee,

has been busying preparing for Larry Thompson’s departure from our ranks in the first quarter of 2012. In cooperation with a reputable recruiting consultant, the committee has reviewed dozens of qualified applicants and interviewed six fine candidates. Of those semifinalists, the two most exemplary have been selected for a second round of interviews which will occur in December 2011. It should be noted that the committee, which consists of current and past Board members and club Presidents, was unanimous in its selection of the finalists. The Search Committee will eventually make its recommendation to the Board, which will be responsible for the transition process. Going through the search process has been an opportunity to think about many fundamental questions of club governance and has, in my opinion, been a very healthy exercise. It has also been an opportunity to reflect on the tremendous service Larry Thompson has rendered to the club over the last twenty years. No matter how great the new general manager might become, it will be difficult to lose and impossible to replace Larry Thompson.

Athletics & Club Life The members remain engaged in a host

of athletic and social activities. It would be impossible to adequately discuss them here. From the first ever event of the Craft Beer club held during October in the Art Lounge to the 69th annual fall show of the MAC Apollos that will take place in the Missouri Room on November 18th, the Clubs Within the Club are in full swing.

The last six months have seen a tremendous amount of activity in athletics. Some highlights include the completion of the downtown women’s locker room renovation, the hiring of a second squash pro and the hosting of a national youth fencing tournament. The fall basketball leagues are back and the members are enjoying the new workout equipment underwritten by the 2011 Cherry Diamond Gala. By the way, the Board has determined that the Cherry Diamond Gala will be a biennial event so

look for the second installment in late fall 2012 or winter 2012-2013.

Another great accomplishment in the area of club life is the relaunching of the mac-stl.org website. Both aesthetically and technically, it is a big upgrade and the feedback from membership has been unanimously positive and enthusiastic.

November 2011-May 2012Proposed By-law Amendments

Pursuant to Section 12.1.3 of the club by-laws, a member has presented me with a proposed amendment to the by-laws dealing with honorary memberships and the memberships awarded to some Past Presidents of the club. This proposal has been referred to the by-laws committee to see if it meets the requirements of our by-laws and comports with other laws to which our club is subject. Although the Board has been dealing with the issue of such memberships itself, the member-initiated by-law amendment will be submitted to the membership for a vote so long as it meets all the requirements.

With respect to memberships awarded to Past Presidents of the club, I have decided for myself that, in light of the financial challenges facing the club, I will not accept a lifetime membership as has been customary for nearly a century at our club. It should also be pointed out that the majority of the Past Presidents at whom the proposed by-law is directed already voluntarily pays dues for the support of the club. The membership will be hearing more on the merits of the proposed by-law amendment as the year progresses and, should any proposal be submitted to the membership for a vote, the Board will accept its judgment.

Election of 2012-2013 OfficersAs 2011 turns to 2012, the Board will be

engaged in the process of selecting the 97th President of the Missouri Athletic Club from the members of the Board class of 2013. We are fortunate to have five fine men, all of whom would be well qualified and disposed to serve as President, from which to choose. The Board will meet on March 1, 2012 to

select my successor and the successors to the other four corporate offices of the club.

Election of the Board of GovernorsClass of 2015

Past President Patrick J. McCarthy and Past President Christopher J. Lawhorn will lead the nominating committee in its quest to identify appropriate members to seek a spot on the Board of Governors, class of 2015. Messrs. McCarthy and Lawhorn are already hard at work, and any member who would like to consider service or who would like to recommend a fellow member should contact them.

ConclusionThe first half of this Board year has been

one of transitions and the second half promises more of the same. Some difficult and painful choices have been made and some are on the horizon. Despite the sadness and uncertainty that accompanies some of these choices, I have been heartened to see the staff continue on with great professionalism and commitment. Likewise, so many members have stepped forward to personally encourage me and the Board and hundreds and hundreds come to both clubhouses day in and day out, enjoying our great dining, social and athletic offerings. These are the people everyone who has ever stood for Board service wants to serve. These are the people that deserve a well-run and responsive club. To the Board, the staff and the members, thank you for such great support and let’s continue moving forward on behalf of this community institution.

Yours in fellowship and service,Thomas C. Albus
