vWomen’s Basketball Fall 2011 has been a monumental semester for Women’s Basketball. Most importantly, club sport status was reached after almost two years of hard work and dedication. With only three original members left from the 2009 founding group, the team has grown and morphed into something greater than ever initially fathomed. The strides this team has made have been more than impressive. Our

team completed its’ first regular season as a member of the East Coast Women’s Club Basketball League. Appalachian took down many tough opponents as the unexpected underdogs. We gained wins over teams such as Wake Forest, Elon, North Carolina State, Winston Salem State, and High Point University, with four out of five losses having less than a ten point difference. We have a strong team

bond and a promising group of freshmen. The team should only improve as time goes on and more people find out about the club. We are hoping our new club sport status will bring us even more talent for the spring semester.

Men’s Ultimate This week the Men’s Ultimate team had so much news to report! As you know we hosted our annual fall tournament the Blue Ridge Blow Out on November 5th and 6th. Fighting through some complications of losing fields due to rain and scrambling to find new ones the tournament turned out to be a huge success. The Nomads themselves placed 5th overall in the tournament after going 4-0 on Saturday. The biggest achievement of the tournament however was defeating our Alumni team twice! This is

great because after beating them for the first time ever in last year’s tournament we knew that they would be gunning for us this year. It was awesome to beat them down again and show them how much better we have gotten. After our home tournament we had another tournament the next weekend at Wake Forrest which we decided to send a mostly rookie squad. Even though we did not send our best team, the younger players proved themselves by placing

2nd overall losing in the championship game to Elon’s A-team 15-10. That, to the team, was a great personal statement! We showed that even with our rookie squad, we did work on other teams. We have our last tournament of the semester this weekend at ECU. There are going to be a lot of quality teams at this tournament and the Nomads look to continue our success and end the semester strong.

Women’s Rugby On Saturday November 19th AHO Women’s Rugby Team played our last game of this semester. This game played against UNCG at State Farm Fields was a great game. We had so much support from other App State students. Thank you to everyone that came out; the drums, body paint and megaphone, and cheering were great. The final score of the game was 22-0 to AHO.

We are looking forward to playing our matrix games next semester. Scheduled games include:

Feb 4- Elon (A)Feb 11- UNCC (A)Feb 18- UNCG (H)Feb 25- Wake (H)

These games are important because they determine rank of our team and which games if any we will play in addition to these games. This year we are hoping to win all of these games and continue on in our division.

Semester Review: AHO Women’s Rugby team has been on fire this semester. Overall we are looking great. Our team started the semester on a

good foot and we are going into next semester more prepared than ever. This semester we played great matches against Virginia Tech, Longwood University, Clemson University, and University of Virginia’s A side. We won matches against UNCG, Duke University, University of South Carolina, James Madison University, UVA’s B side, and our Alumni. Our accomplishments this semester include these wins, a successful all women’s Rucktoberfest tournament, and a fundraiser at Paolucci’s. Out of these accomplishments our biggest triumph would probably be the success of the Rucktoberfest tournament to which 9 women’s teams attended. Our team has been fortunate to have had lots of incoming players this year who have worked hard to further our team. We could not have been as successful as we have been without all of the returning and incoming players this year. We have also been fortunate to have captains, Allie Mackinnon and Bonnie Nuygen, who are dedicated to committing so much of their time to lead and inspire our team. We cant wait until next semester!

While the season for the 2011-2012 school year hasn’t gotten under way were looking forward to topping last year’s successful season. We

placed third in our conference and traveled to regionals at Hunter Mountain, NY. We have high hopes for an even more successful

season with our roster doubling in size and the addition of tons of new talent. We definitely have our scopes set

on nationals this year.

Women’s Lacrosse App State Women’s Lacrosse has had an amazing spring semester, finishing with a record of 6 wins 3 losses and a tie. The team has worked so hard to make this semester one of the best seasons the Women’s Lacrosse team has had. Beating a Varsity Division II team, 12 to 9, showed many teams that this year App is going to be a fight in the official season alongside of being a unforgettable accomplishment.

Swimming Swimming has had a fantastic semester, with a lot of fast people joining the team and making it so much better! We have attended two away meets this semester, one at High Point University and another at Elon University. We hosted a home meet where 11 other teams attended. Aside from tailgating and having a lot of team dinners and bonding, time we have really grown close as a team .We can’t wait to come back next semester to swim more and compete against bigger Universities.

Our biggest accomplishment for this semester would have to be placing 2nd for girls and 3rd for the boys team at Elon Fall Championships; out of 20 teams all around the region. This is a meet that we go to every year and it is always really competitive. In all four years that I have attended the Elon meet we have not had both our teams place so high. At this meet. What a way to make a statement for this year to all of the teams we compete against!

We are winding down the semester with killer practice sets to keep us in shape over the holidays. Yet we still are managing to plan our White Elephant Christmas Dinner and getting excited for Club Sports Night Men’s basketball game as a team.

Alpine Ski The Alpine Ski Team has successfully completed a semester of dryland training. The team incorporated strength, cardio, and plyometric exercises into their routine twice a week, and is expecting a strong start to the race season this January.

Women’s Ultimate

Women’s ultimate’s top accomplishment for the semester was winning Duke University’s Devils Disk Tournament. As one of the first tournaments of the year, the well-conditioned Nonads came out full speed ahead to run their opponents until they were too tired to run any more. This was a great milestone for the season and gives us great hope for the spring semester.

-Kasey Telfer (Vice President)

Fencing The turnout for fencing club has been amazing this semester with many dedicated fencers devoting their time to coming to practice and really showing their skills when bouting out on a strip against other fencers. Other students from the fencing class have also been coming to the practices to intermingle with our fencers as well as learn from and drill with them. The ASU Fencing club has even received more recruits over the course of the semester and there is much excitement over what will be accomplished in the next semester,. The club is already planning to host not one, but two official tournaments to get our fencers actually introduced to the competitive scene, and make them even more ready and psyched up for other tournaments the club might travel to.

In Memory of Sam RathnowWomen’s Soccer

Sam was the Women’s Club Soccer coach last year (2010-2011) and was truly a remarkable person. If you were ever blessed with the chance of meeting Sam you know that he lived life to the fullest and always had a smile on his face. He had a love for soccer and you could see that when he was coaching us. Probably one of the most enthusiastic, fun-loving coaches I’ve ever had and I feel grateful that I had the chance of meeting Sam. Under his coaching, the Club Soccer team had their most successful season in history. His passion for life translated in everything that he did. Our hearts heavy for this terrible loss, but all of us are forever grateful for our time we had with him.
