With the Postal Service and some members o Congressgiving the green light to closing more mail processingacilities, Senator Jon ester is sending a clear message: stopdigging the hole deeper. ester led a group o Senators to the Senate floor to

tell Postal Service leadership and Congress that as long asthe Postal Service continues to close area mail processingacilities, it is shooting itsel in the oot as it strives to improveits finances. Tere are a lot o olks around here whod love to seethe Postal Service go out o business. But the Postal Service -whether in urban America or rural America - delivers the goodsAmericans need, ester said. All the Postal Service doing withits short-sighted cuts is weakening trust in the Postal Service.Essentially, they are digging their fiscal hole deeper. Starting in January, the Postal Service plans to eliminateovernight delivery in most o the country and close 82 mailprocessing acilities. Tese acilities route mail around thecountry so that letters, packages, medicine, equipment - and, yes, holiday gifs - get where they need to go. Closing theacilities would also cost up to 15,000 jobs. ester and his colleagues are pushing or a moratoriumon processing acility closures while ester and Congresswork on a balanced reorm bill. ester said previous reormefforts do not preserve needed mail delivery standards or theuture viability o the Postal Service. Te Postal Service is struggling financially in part due tothe 2006 law that requires the Postal Service to prepay retirement

benefits o postal employees at a rate higher than necessary.

    Letter to the Buzz

During this holiday season, the Board o Directors othe Northeast Montana Veterans Fund, Inc. extends ourthanks and appreciation to everyone who has supported theMemorial. We are coming closer to our goal, thanks to the

combined efforts o our patron donors, local businesses, in-kind proessional assistance, all VFW/American Legions& Auxiliaries, and generous contributions through rafflesand und-raisers. It is a privilege to work on a project thathonors the courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty andcountry o NE Montana Veterans.

With help rom so many over the past our years, the goalto build a world class Veterans Memorial at Fort Peck is now inthe final stages o engineering. We hope to negotiate plans orcontractor bids this winter and break ground in Fort Peck, assoon as the rost is out this Spring.

Te Memorial will be built with private contributionsrom Northeast Montana citizens, businesses andorganizations, and we are confident that we have most othe money necessary to complete Phase #1. Tis currentlyincludes the Walls o Honor, all preliminary surveys, soiltests, design engineering, construction plans, the mainmonument, an entry sign, oundations or the flag parks,flatwork-retaining walls-walkways-vigil oundations, initialelectrical-lighting, and basic landscaping. Completelyfinished the Memorial will also have appropriate KIA/MIA/POW recognitions, sculptures and busts, artwork, murals, static displays and seating, which will have costs

approaching one million dollars. We have successully raisedover $500,000, or approximately hal what we are eventuallygoing to need.

We are proud to assure you that there are ew administrativeexpenses deducted rom any contributions and that the Board oDirectors is dedicated to devoting all donations to the Memorial. We have hired no employees and paid no salaries. We would welcome year-end giving to this projectand we are a 501C19 non-profit qualified to receive tax-deductible contributions. Donations to worthy causesduring the Holidays are a part o the season. Helping to

build this Memorial can add to the quality o the lie o youramily. Freedom is a precious gif. Te Walls o Honor remain a central eature o the park andwill be sel-unded by the sale o exquisitely etched black granitetiles, currently available or your Holiday giving considerations.Te Wall, like the Memorial, is or all Veterans, all branches othe service, including National Guards and Reserves. Our goal is to ensure that no Northeast Montana veteran islef off the Wall o Honor. Cost o the tiles is $225 until MemorialDay 2015. Up to that time, we will be able to group amilies andriends together on the Walls. Afer that, we expect the cost othe tiles to go up and it will not be possible to group names. For

a qualified non-profit tax deduction, permanently honor youamily and riends by recognizing a Veterans legacy and help ufinish this Park.

Phase #1 will establish the park or immediate viewing andenjoyment. For the remaining phases, we have plans to raismore donations with targeted grant applications and corporatrequests. ile sales are critically important at this time to help ufinish the project right. Based on current engineering estimates we expeccosts or Phase #1 to be higher than original estimatesTe Board decided to capture savings on the completedMemorial by doing all basic inrastructure work during thinitial construction. Tis includes landscaping, irrigationelectrical and oundations. Tis only seems to be goobusiness. We have hired a landscaping architect who haexperience with other Memorials to help finalize site plansWe should have everything in place to start awarding worsometime afer the first o the year.

It is our hope that in this season o giving you will considea gif. Rest assured any gifs or tiles purchased or this NEMontana Veterans Memorial Park will make a huge differenceContact any o our Board or additional inormation or specifibequest desires. ~ STEVE PAGE and TOM MARKLE, CO-CHAIRS MIKE HUGHES, Keeper of the Tiles
