The Other World Series

In October, another premier world sports event reached its climax, with one team left standing, rewarded for months of grueling practices, to the cheers of ador-ing, frenzied fans. The “world series” of professional team computer games was settled on a stage in a packed, 40,000-seat stadium in Seoul before three gigan-tic TV screens and an Internet audience of millions. The powerhouse Samsung White team out-moused and -keyboard-ed the Chinese champions at “League of Legends” (which 27 million gamers worldwide play every day), using its fantasy characters to destroy opponents’ bases. The winning team took home $1 million of corporate money, but future earnings should escalate when idolized world-class players unionize and swing merchandising endorsement deals.

The New Math

More than 6 million students have down-loaded the new iPhone app PhotoMath to solve Algebra I and Algebra II prob-lems by pointing the phone’s camera at a printed equation. The answer, and the explanation, quickly appear on a screen, as a teaching tool -- or for the students to show “their” work if PhotoMath is used on exam questions. The Croatia-based developer told the Quartz website in October that it is working on upgrades for higher-level math equations (though no relief is in sight for those chronically pesky “word problems”). Meanwhile, the debate has been triggered over whether PhotoMath is a dynamic technological advance in education -- or a cheating-en-abler.

Hi Neighbours: 

It is hard to believe that 2014 is winding down; it has been an eventful year. Today’s column is a grab bag of stuff marking the year end and looking ahead a little. 

Per the Council Policy Manual, Council is conducting a review of itself. The annual review is for three purposes: 

1. To ensure our neighbours in Kindersley have a Council that is providing effective leadership and oversight; 2. Understanding how we are effective and what we are doing well; and 3. Developing an awareness of the opportunities we have for improvement. 

The  tool  has  six  tables  that  ask  an  assortment  of  questions  addressing:  Structure  and  Processes,  Council Performance, Council Meetings, Council and Staff Relations, Council Member Competencies, and Feedback on the Mayor.  Continuous  improvement  is  key  for  any  organization  and we  have  to  demonstrate  it.  There  are  three potential responses: OFI (opportunity for improvement), adequate, and good. 

I highlighted the budget  last week and  I did an overview of the Action Plan  for 2015 the week previous to that. Both the Action Plan for 2015 and the Budget will be on the agenda for the December 8th Council Meeting. 

Housing  is still a concern and  I have arranged for representative(s) from the Saskatchewan Co‐Op Association to attend the December 8th Council Meeting and deliver a presentation about co‐operative housing. The purpose of the presentation  is  to build awareness  for  this housing concept so people can determine  if  this  is a model  they want to participate in. There are a variety of co‐operative housing types and perhaps one works for both residents and businesses of Kindersley. This presentation is an exploration of the co‐operative housing concept. 

Another  item  coming  up  for  discussion  is  an  anti‐bullying  by‐law.  Defining  any  behaviour  as  criminal  is  the responsibility of the federal government, but the RCMP are asking for us to engage in this discussion. According to Article 4 of the Municipalities Act we are to develop and maintain a safe and viable community fostering economic, social and environmental well‐being. How do we define this Article? A law‐based response similar to the criminal code or a social investment response creating opportunities for fulfillment and healthy relationships? I am leaning toward social investment response such as Phase 2 and diversified youth programming.

The Christmas Tree

In 16th-century Germany fir trees were decorated, both indoors and out, with apples, roses, gilded candies, and colored paper. In the Middle Ages, a popular religious play depicted the story of Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden

of Eden.

A fir tree hung with apples was used to symbolize the Garden of Eden -- the Paradise Tree. The play ended with the prophecy of a savior coming, and so

was often performed during the Advent season.

One legend that has not been proved is that Martin Luther is responsible for the origin of the Christmas tree. This story says that one Christmas Eve, about the year 1500, he was walking through the snow-covered woods and was struck by the beauty of the snow glistened trees. Their branches, dusted with snow,

shimmered in the moon light. When he got home, he set up a small fir tree and shared the story with his children. He decorated the Christmas tree with small

candles, which he lighted in honor of Christ’s birth.

WHY SANTA CAN’T POSSIBLY BE A MAN:

Christmas is a big, organized, warm, fuzzy, nurturing social deal, and I have a tough time believing a guy could possibly pull it all off!

The vast majority of men don’t even think about selecting gifts until December 24.

He would have transportation problems because he would inevita-bly get lost up there in the snow and clouds and then refuse to stop

and ask for directions. Men can’t pack a bag.

Men would rather be dead than caught wearing red velvet.

Men would feel their masculinity is threatened...having to be seen with all those elves.

Men don’t answer their mail.

Men would refuse to allow their physique to be described even in jest as anything remotely resembling a “bowlful of jelly.”

Only a male Santa can ignore ‘fashion’ and wear the same suit for 500 years.
