Weird New Year’s Eve Celebrations  Te imes Square ball drop began in 1906, two years aferthe block’s first New Year’s Eve celebration, as a responseto New York City banning the previously-used fireworks.Te ball drop inspired a number o ball drops across thecountry, but also gave inspiration to notably less-veneratedimitators, such as the Crab Drop, the giant Hershey’s Kiss, the500-pound watermelon, the Possum Drop and an 80-pounddecorated cheese wedge.  Te Crab Drop o Easton, Md., which will be one oseveral celebrations covered live by CNN this year, eaturesa 6-oot-wide crab sculpture being lowered to the groundat midnight as part o First Night albot, an annual amily-

riendly celebration in the city.  Te crab will be lowered first at 9 p.m. as a preliminarycelebration or those who will not be able to stay awake untilmidnight, organizers said.  Vincennes, Ind., is home to the lowering o a 500-poundsteel-and-oam watermelon that, at midnight, releases a loado 15 locally-grown melons to a “splatorm” below.  Organizers said this year’s melon drop will be moreamily-riendly than last year’s, which saw watermelon-smashing comedian Gallagher raise controversy with somesexual comments about Sarah Palin, the ormer Republican

Happy New Year!

Hello Valley County,  Mere words cannot express how much I have treasured my terms asValley County Commissioner. As I look back at the years that my family

has lived in Valley County I must admit I believe my Grandfather madea great decision back in 1898 when he choose to make this County his

home. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to participatein our local government and I must admit that the decision to retire f romoffice was truly difficult. I will always remember the years with ValleyCounty and will never forget all the help and support that I have received

from friends and neighbors along the way. I feel that the way of life thatwe have here is a real treasure and needs to be preserved and protected

from outside influences that would be detrimental to all of us.

I will keep on with those endeavors as long as I can and will remainactive in local happenings because I feel that is the right thing to do.As the future is unknown we can only hope and pray that we will always have this wonderful

place to live and the folks that live here continue to enjoy the freedoms and benefits of this wonderfulcommunity.  Thanks again. The privilege has been all mine.  Dave and Marie

Thank You Valley County
