Pastor’s Corner

My Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family in which we honor Jesus of Nazareth, his mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and his foster father, Saint Joseph, as a family. This Feast was instituted by Pope Leo XIII in 1893. Pope Leo XIII is also the one who wrote the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel that we recite after our Masses. Originally, this liturgical celebration fell on the Sunday within (what was) the Octave of the Epiphany; that is to say, on the Sunday between January 7 through January 13. Now, however, it is celebrated on the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas, that is, the Sunday between Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The primary purpose of this Feast is to present the Holy Family as a model for all Christian families. This is a wonderful day to celebrate our families, perhaps share a meal together, pray for them and reflect on how we as parents and children can imitate their virtues in our daily lives. I pray on this beautiful Feast that your families will be blessed! A few weeks ago I sent a personal letter to every household within our parish wishing all of you greetings & prayers for a blessed Christmas & a Happy New Year. My letter also expressed my desire to hear back from you regarding your own connection to our parish, your personal faith journey & any way that I can help you and/or your family in that regard. I kindly ask you to consider answering the enclosed survey and/or you may reach out to me through e-mail. This information will greatly assist me as your pastor as I continue to strive to be sensitive to your spiritual and/or pastoral needs. It will also serve as a springboard for our evangelization efforts here at Our Lady of the Assumption moving forward into the coming year. Finally, an update on our Annual Appeal. As of this writing we have received a total of $ 57,335 in donations. If you haven’t sent in your census form and/or donation we invite you to do so. This Appeal is very important for the capital projects of our parish. So, I thank you once again for your sacrificial giving and again, on this Feast of the Holy Family, may your families be blessed in the coming New Year!

Love and prayers, Fr. Carey
