BLESSED TRINITY PARISH CLEVELAND, OH
From Fr. Doug’s Desk…
A Blessed Christmas 2011
This Christmas season is certainly a blessing
for many. The war in Iraq has come to an end
for our country (though not for the Iraqis). That
means that many solders are reunited with their
spouses and children and families are once
again intact. Some have found jobs recently.
Many in the parish received gifts of toys, food,
clothing, decorations and more to help them
celebrate the Christmas season. Daily our parish
gave birth to Christ once again as we brought
his gifts of peace, love and joy to those for
whom Christ came.
These days we hear many people say that
Christmas is for children. It certainly does take
on a different tone when children are not
around. In my own family, the Christmases
between when the grandchildren became adults
and before the great grandchildren started to
arrive had a different flavor than the ones we
have now.
But at that first Christmas, it was very clear
that Christmas was an adult affair. Mary may
have been the youngest person in attendance!
The message of Christ’s birth was that he would
be very different from the generally expected
Messiah. He came for the poor (shepherds), the
stranger (Wise Men), to heal creation (star and
animals), to reconcile the world with God
(angels) and to help people bring about a true
and lasting peace. From the Annunciation to the
Epiphany, feasts that frame the Christmas event,
the world is turned upside down. Mary’s
Magnificat sums it up nicely: God fills the
hungry and looks with favor on the lowly; God
confuses the proud and deposes the mighty
from their thrones; God sends the rich away
empty and fills the hungry with good things.
Such is the true nature of Christmas. When
we translate that into modern day language, if it
does not shock us as much as it shocked the
people of Jesus’ day, then perhaps the meaning
of Christmas has lost its power. These days we
might include whomever others see as unworthy
of the Gospel. As one of my Christmas cards
proclaimed, “To every heart that dares to hope,
to every soul that longs for peace, to everyone
who shares His love, joy to you and all the
world”. Perhaps that is the migrant worker who
has not seen his family is years. Perhaps that is
the Bosnian refugee who longs for his
homeland. Maybe it is the gay couple whose
two adopted children are home with the flu. It
might be the gang member, the unwed mother,
the Iraqi citizen or the Muslim neighbor. The
coming of Christ is for all. Let us rejoice in
God’s unconditional and all-encompassing love.
On a personal note, I’d like to thank
everyone for their Christmas cards, gifts,
cookies, kind words and best wishes this
Christmas. I am moved by your thoughtfulness
and generosity. And wherever you are on your
journey of life, may God bless you this joyful
day and always.
For a child is born to us,
A son is given us;
Upon his shoulder dominion rests.
They name him Wonder-Counselor,
God-Hero, Father Forever,
Prince of Peace.
His dominion is vast
And forever peaceful,
From David’s throne,
And over his kingdom,
Which he confirms and sustains
By judgment and justice
Both now and forever.

Disciple of the Week
This Christmas we want to thank Thomas
Heim for his generous service to our communi-
ty. Every Saturday, Tom arrives before 3:00pm
and helps get ready for the weekend. He brings
over the bulletins and liturgical materials. He
cleans out the old bulletins and places the new
ones where they go. As an usher, he takes up
the collection at one or two Masses a week. As
a Eucharistic minister, Tom gives the gift of
Christ to others in the Eucharist. Tom helps
count the collection once a month. Tommy also
coordinates the speaker series for Men’s Minis-
try and is a member of the Knights of Columbus.
We are grateful to Tom’s many hours of dedicat-
ed service to our parish. Thank you, Tom.
NITE AT THE RACES / REVERSE RAFFLE Save the

support the parish in the coming year. Contact Mary Lou
Satorius (216) 251-7302 or Mary Knauss (216) 941-0078

PARISH RENEWAL As soon as you begin to fill in your
new 2012 calendars, mark off the weekend of March 9 --
10 for our next Blessed Trinity Parish Renewal. Come and
meet new friends you can grow with on your spiritual jour-
ney. If you are a parishioner who has been involved in any
kind of retreat or renewal, you are invited to help with our
renewal weekend. Contact Carol now for more information.
A QUESTION ABOUT GIVING Sometimes people ask,
“What should I be giving in the collection?” A good rule of
thumb is for Sundays: an hour’s wage; for holidays: a days
wage. For those unable to give that amount, we remember
the Christmas stories of the littlest angel and the little drum-
mer boy who gave what they could.
BEGIN THE NEW YEAR IN A PEACE-FILLED WAY
Join Pax Christi members on New Year’s Eve, 7:00—
8:30pm, in church, for a time of prayer and reflection on our
call to be justice-seekers and peacemakers on our world.
