Gambling Updates

Gambling continues to be a vital part of the Eagles Club generating revenue for lawful expenditures such as some capital improvements and of course, supporting local charities.

Pull tabs and e-tabs are large part of the gambling scene at the Eagles with a few notable big winners this last year. However, since it’s return, bingo has proven to be popular with maxed out pots on most Wednesdays and Saturdays. The new format that includes packets instead of individual sheets for each game, $500 hot ball prizes and $200 prizes for some of the regular bingos in 7 numbers have been well received and there have been a lot of happy winners. Bingo is the 1st and 3rd Saturday and every Wednesday

And don’t forget about the raffles. Monthly raffles with 90% payouts are drawn on the 1st Saturday of each month and the new 2022 raffle will be drawn on Feb 25, 2022

Presidents Letter

Brothers and Sisters of the Eagles, We hope everyone had a great turkey day and this year you were able to enjoy the holiday with friends and family. At this time of year and with the holidays, seems it is a time of reflection. It was just 15 years ago when the big decision was made to sell our Eagles home on First Avenue SW and look to the future with the protentional of this building and property. December 2006, Aerie and Auxiliary members were very busy working to transform this building; remodeling (taking out walls and the bar down to the floor), cleaning (construction debris to dirty kitchen equipment) and combining/packing two properties. While this was going on, the old Eagles was still open until the last Tom N’ Jerry on Christmas Eve was enjoyed. The Club was only closed the day after Christmas. It was a month of hard work and long hours. The members and employees had our new home open to serve beverages by 4:00 p.m. on the 27th. It was amazing to watch and be involved in the teamwork needed to make this happen. Thank you to the members who had the vision. It has been a great 15 years. We need to keep the momentum and the Eagle’s teamwork going. Cheers to a safe and joyous Christmas and New Year. May you be blessed, share your time and prosperity this holiday season with others. Safe and Happy Holidays. Denise Haefner John Mueller Madam President Worthy President [email protected] [email protected]

Member Profiles Each month we will be interviewing an Aerie and Auxiliary member to find out who they are, what

they like about the club and how they became members. This month, we talk to Larry and Brenda Mathews

How long have you been members? We both joined 6 years ago after we moved from Byron to this end of Rochester…we don’t live too far from the club.

Larry, you are recently retired. What did you do? I worked as an on-site quality control tech for John Deere via Crenlo for 47 years. Now I’m a school bus driver and I LOVE IT!! I have a great route and it’s a good company (that would be First Student and they are always looking for drivers!).

Brenda, you work at Mayo? I’m a surgical tech at Mayo and have worked there for 40 years. I may retire in 4 years or it could be tomorrow, who knows? (Brenda is very proud that she worked her way through the ranks at Mayo to become a surgical tech).

How long have you been married? This was actually a little challenging for them but we determined they were married in 1983 so that makes 38 years!

How many kids do you have? 2 boys…Tanner is an electrical engineer for John Deere in Iowa and Jacob is a toolmaker at Crenlo.

What do you do for fun? We had a boat for 30 years at a slip on the river but now we have our car and we like to come to the car shows. We like to travel and recently went to Nashville but we like Aruba and have been there 6 times.

What is your most memorable event? Having our kids. But one other event that is really memorable is a trip we took to Key West. The weather was great and we went with friends. We rented convertibles and just has a great time.

Where would you like to travel? Brenda wants to see Europe and Larry said Alaska but they both want to see Hawaii. However, they both agreed that it will be awhile until before they travel….until the whole Covid situation settles down.

If you had $1 million, what would you do? Buy some property where it’s warm and disappear for 3 months in the winter.

What’s your favorite sport? Larry: Vikings Football!!! Brenda: Socializing with Vikings fans! But I like hockey and I used to always watch the North Stars back in the day!

Where were you born? Larry: Douglas, MN. Brenda: Mellen, WI. Where did you meet? Douglas, MN!

What is your favorite meal? Larry: Primer Rib. Brenda: Chicken. They were both great fans of Michaels and were there the last night they were open.

What was the highlight of the last 2 weeks? Playing bingo on the Wed before Thanksgiving with our kids and their significant others and some of Brenda’s co-workers. We really had a good time and our kids loved it. (if you were at bingo that night, you know that table won several times too).

What is your perfect day? Brenda: Going antiquing and to junk stores. Shopping in little towns and then lunch with a couple of drinks. Larry: Just getting up in the morning is a perfect day!

Fun facts about Brenda and Larry…

• They have two Bernese Mountain Dogs, Roxanne and Zoey that believe they are lap dogs.

• Larry’s Dad (who’s 91) and Brenda’s Mom now hang out together and you sometimes see them together at the Eagles.

• When they joined the Eagles, they reconnected with John (Jack) and Linda Peck. Larry went to school with John and they kind of lost touch but seeing them at the club rekindled their friendship.

Both Brenda and Larry love the Eagles Club and the people there. You may see them playing on the Tuesday afternoon pool league and at the car shows and they are always eager to buy raffle tickets or try their hand at pull tabs and e-tabs.

Page 9: December 2021 Volume 1, Number 12

How long have you worked here? 2 ½ years with a short stint of 2 months when I worked here with my dad.

Where did you work before? Culvers as a 2nd assistant manager.

How old are you? 23. Where did you grow up? Chesapeake, Virginia. Moved here in 2011 and went to Kellogg and Century.

What is your favorite thing to cook? Breakfast quesadilla.

What would you like to add to the menu? Pork chop dinner.

How did you get interested in cooking? My dad cooked a lot at home, and I learned a lot from him. He used to cook here, and I worked with him a bit and really liked it. Then I got a promotion at Culvers and was able to cook more in the kitchen there.

What do you like about the kitchen here? It’s a very open design.

What are your hobbies? I like to just drive around town and play video games (We’re assuming he doesn’t do them at the same time!).

How many siblings do you have? 4.

Where would you like to work? Hell’s Kitchen! I don’t think I’d make it there, but it would be an experience to meet Gordon Ramsey. I like it when he calls people “donkey” (That’s Gordon Ramsey’s favorite insult).

If someone gave you $1 million, what would you do? I would give half to my parents because they probably spent that much raising me. The other half I would spend on a food truck. What would you serve in the food truck? Specialty burgers.

Your soups have been really good. How do you figure out what to make? I just take a recipe and then adjust it by smell.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? Great Britain! Again, maybe run into Gordon Ramsey and maybe the other Youtube personalities I watch like Sidemen (gaming guys on Youtube)

Matt is working hard to make the kitchen here at the Eagles great and he enjoys working with customers on events. He hopes to bring back weekly or daily specials on a regular basis. He also likes working with Kevin…he considers him more of an “uncle” because of how he helped out his dad when he worked at the Eagles and what he’s learned from him here in the kitchen. If you have soup ideas, let Matt know. He’s willing to listen.

Employee Profile Each month we will be interviewing an Employee from the Eagles. This month it’s

Kitchen Manager Matt Larson
