President’s Report – December 2020

Hi all,

At this point in time, I’m still doing one car Morry Runs. Started in March with a run of one to Mt Buninyong and continued into November with my run of one to Kinglake. HEK’s a very lonely Morris Minor waiting for friends with which to go on a run. On a more cheerful note HEK sounds wonderful. The sound deadener has made a lot of difference and now a conversation can be had on the freeway. I did download a decibel reader to measure the noise before and after but as an experiment that has been a complete failure as the same runs to work and home have exactly the same maximums and averages before and after the sound deadening treatment. I have even used sound absorbing underlay and used underlay under the back seat as per instructions from Percy some years ago. Also, as per instructions, I have not stuck the gear box or master cylinder covers down – I have carefully left seams and screw holes so dismantling can happen when necessary. I ran out of sound deadener for the doors so that will have to be as far as I go. The interior is looking lovely with a new carpet and as a Covid activity it kept me busy for about a fortnight (don’t forget I’m still working). I know, I thought three days would do it but…. The moral of this story is that I am so ready for a run! On a sadder note we have lost another Morris Minor lover with the passing of Ern Miller, an ex-President no less, for the years 1998 and 1999. In the November issue of The Generator we re-published an article written by another ex-President, Julie Stanyer, and while it was lovely to read her story it was also sad in that it reminded us that she lost her battle with Breast Cancer back in 2017. Julie was a life member of the club due to her many years of valuable and dedicated service. Her last outing with the club was the MMCCV 40th Anniversary luncheon in 2017. Hope to see you all on the next run. Braidy, El Presidente.

Club Captain’s Report – December 2020 Hi everyone,

Hope you are all keeping well and looking forward to a normal Christmas now that the Covid restrictions have been eased. Due to the easing of those restrictions the Club is now able to organise a run as the final Club event for the year. The planned Christmas function on Thursday 3rd December has been cancelled by the Veneto Club due to Covid but we hope that a Christmas Run now planned by the Committee will capture the spirit of Christmas enjoyed at previous Club Christmas functions. So listen up everyone! Here are the details of a Christmas Run planned for Sunday 13th December, 2020, to the Sugarloaf Dam at Christmas Hills (very appropriately named for the season!). Meet at Diamond Creek Maccas near railway Station from 9.30am for a 10.30am departure to the Sugarloaf Dam on a leisurely drive on country back-roads for a BYO picnic lunch. BYO picnic lunch and drinks and a spare fold-up picnic table and chairs would be appreciated if you have them. Feel free to dress up in your Christmas finery to add to the fun on the day. Please let me know by phone or text on mob 0400 273 328 if you are coming and numbers to assist with arrangements on the day. You will have noticed that I have stepped down from the Captain’s position which is now vacant. As a member of the Committee without portfolio I have offered to continue briefly for a short time in an acting capacity in the hope that another Club member might volunteer. I would love to hear from any member who may be even vaguely interested for me to fill them in on what is involved and to give that member support in taking over from me. In the meantime, I would love to hear from members intending to come to the above Christmas Run on Sunday 13th December.

Cheers to all.

Michael Dobson – Acting Club Captain December 2020

PS. Keep those Stories-of-interest coming people.

Attention re 2021 National Rally

Hi Everyone, You may or may not be aware of MMCCQ decision to cancell the 2021 Morris Minor National Rally, it was a difficult decision to make and totally unforseen. As a club we cannot see how we can host a successful event considering the current threat of Covid 19. The changes to social behavior & record keeping are not an easy situation to deal with & most certainly something our club is not equipped for. We are also not able to sustain financial loss if the event was to be cancelled in the future. Our preparations for the event were well advanced. We had assembled an amazing management team and we were very dedicated to hosting a successful event. We were literally on the cusp of announcing our final plans. Fortunately we had not progressed to accepting nominations for the event and accepting payments from participants & Sponsors. The rest is history... We will fully support any club that intends to take on the responsibility of hosting a National event. Best regards, Alan Wagner, MMCCQ Mob 0422 071 068, October 2020.

Anyone for Lunch ?

A MINOR MOMENT by

Jeff Stanyer

Julie when I met her, long before we got together was driving a Mazda 808 and when she got divorced the

car went with the husband and Julie relied on public transport to travel from way out western suburbs of

Sydney into the city to work.

Moving on a few years and we were living together closer to the city and I was often at sea with the Navy,

Julie would drive my HG Monaro which she loved but found it difficult in the traffic and parking. I suppose

you are wondering where this is heading, one Xmas leave we decided to visit my mother in Tongala, my

sister down the street had a 1952 MM Highlight that she used infrequently. To cut to the chase we bought

it for the princely sum of $100 with 6 months rego to boot. The first adventure was to get it back to Sydney,

so off we go at the flashing speed of 45MPH, the side valve motor didn’t like it much faster and I doubt it

had been much over 30 getting around Tongala. With me going ahead in the Monaro and Julie following

behind with one child onboard and me with the other two we set out, about two hours into the trip I noticed

no Julie behind me (first mistake, I should have been behind her); a quick U-turn and back to find the Morry

on the side of the road a little bit hot. I always carried water, so we filled her up and off we went again me

leading (oops). Not being familiar with older British vehicles I was unaware ‘no water pump’. Morry once

again stopped and I was out of water this time, but I remembered passing an irrigation channel so with full

water bottles and a full radiator we were off again. We didn’t quite make it to Wagga Wagga, this time it

was a tow into Wagga for a rest for us and the Morry. (this was all happening in the night). We eventually

made it to the Total Truck Stop at Yass but when doing some checks there I discovered that the oil in the

sump was a funny cream colour. Transfer all to the Monaro, discuss leaving the Morry at the servo with

the view of coming back for it at the weekend, no deal 2 days at the most. I hired a trailer next day and

went back to Yass late in the evening and had the trailer returned by 0900 the following day. The side

valve had split the block between Nos. 2 and 3 cylinders which I was told was not an uncommon

occurrence. I cannot believe how calm Julie was during this episode, I knew I was onto a real winner here.

With luck, a chap where we were living had parked up behind the units an MM1000 complete. I could

have it for $100 or $75 without the battery, parting with $75 I had another one. While the battery was

connected we started it, a couple of turns and we were in luck. The transplant took place out in the street

with two wheels on the footpath and two on the road straddling the gutter, a 4x4 timber and two blokes,

we were mobile in the afternoon. Who needs an engine hoist? The side valve and gearbox were put in

the back of the 1000 and in the dark of night it was deposited outside the gates of the then Morris Minor

Company of Australia in Harbord, owned by Bill Casburn (that is another story) about 5km away. After a

few jobs we had the Highlight registered and Julie was ecstatic, no more public transport.

When we moved to Hastings Julie drove from Sydney without missing a beat, a task I was to complete a

couple of times later on from Bittern to Sydney and return. In Hasting a work mate of mine wanted a Morry

to do up, he put a Datto etc. in it. He saw an advert for the Morris Minor Car Club of Victoria and the Day

of The Morry so off we all went, two families, two Morrys and arrived at the Steam Traction Grounds in

Wantirna for the first Day of The Morry, late 70’s. They were everywhere these little round lumpy cars, we

met Katriona Bruce and talked to some people and we were hooked. Membership number 218. We

attended our first meeting at St. Mary’s hall and Julie did not miss a meeting for 10 years straight. The

one she missed was when Jessica was sitting exams. That first meeting was an eyeopener with the

‘ratpack’ sitting down the back talking and interjecting any time the committee proposed something radical.

Page 13: December 2020 Volume 45 Number 12 - morrisminorvic.org.au

Most of the ‘ratpack’ ended up on the committee in later years. What a great mob of young enthusiastic

people, even Dr. Dave was young then (oh well younger).

The next Morry of the eventual 5 was the 1000 Traveler which coincidently came from Tongala and

suffered similar problems to the MM, you could drive it about 6km then it would seize, cool down, and it

would go again; luckily we only had to go about 16 km to my sister’s where we had decided to leave it and

collect it later, again by trailer. Eventually we had a panel van which we did the outback Tibooburra trip

and also Birdsville trip. The van had a 1200 GS twin carby Datsun engine (B210) that was dangerous to

drive quickly, at about 120 kph it would start to float (did it on the Monash just to see how fast it would go)

suffice to say once was enough. The Traveller was rebuilt from the ground up and at the time was the

only going one in the Club, we drove it to the Alice and Rock trip, she was a trophy winner but considering

the amount of money spent on them these days she would have been right at the back of the queue. Julie

always wanted a Ute so I found one and we did it up it also was a winner, Julie loved driving it and it was

practical for her galivanting around with sewing and stuff. So we had the 2 door MM Highlight, the 1000

Traveller and the Low light 1000 (2000 Panel Van) and the S11 ute (1000), Tom ‘O Regan and I drove

the ute on the Inaminka trip when Julie and Jessica could not go because Jessica was doing year 12,

another great trip in many ways.

Julie was President twice and also secretary, I was treasurer when it was easy, Librarian, Newsletter editor

and Historian and Secretary (I think), I would make up the Generator send it to some one of the many and

they would get it printed and distributed. Liqueurs

Ok one little story, when Julie was President (I was away at sea) Julie and Jessica were coming home

from a meeting, at the junction of the Westernport Hwy and Flinders road was a Booze Bus. “Have you

been drinking” “No” “Blow in here please” “Sorry mam but you are on the limit” “Can’t be, I haven’t been

drinking” To congratulate her on her Presidency someone had given her a box of cherry liqueurs and they

were just about all gone. “Where are you going?” “Bittern” “Then I suggest you go straight home”. To

appease them she offered them some cream buns and donuts left over from the meeting supper. From

then on if they stopped her Julie would be short some Club supper.

I could ramble on about the many great times (and there are a lot) we had but that would bore you to tears,

all but the MM Highlite have gone their own ways, flown the coop, so to say, with new owners that I hope

treat them as kindly and love them as we did. The MM has been in my immediate family in excess of 45

years and is still starting with a bit of encouragement and driving well. Julie has passed now as you know,

and her third anniversary has just passed.

To any of the younger or newer members who are taking the time to read this make the most of the great

comradeship of the older members and draw on their wealth of knowledge of the 9,000+ parts, nuts bolts

and washers that go to make up your Morris Minor, there are 200+ stainless screws that hold the aluminium

panels onto a Traveller and I had the blisters to prove it, no battery screwdrivers then.

Get to as many runs as you can because that’s where you meet the real members.

Cheers for now and “Keep on Morrying”

A RUN DOWN TO SERENDIP

An invitation from the Geelong Morris Minor Club saw us take to the road on the morning of Sunday 29 November 2020 for a post-lockdown run. After meeting up with some fellow MMCCV members at Macca’s Laverton we travelled in convoy to the Serendip Sanctuary Park at Lara, a location a short distance from Geelong just off the Melbourne road. We met, or became reacquainted with, our friendly Geelong Club hosts and settled in for our picnic lunch. After a gloomy start to the day, we were fortunate that it developed into a lovely day which meant most of the folk were happy to sit, enjoy the sunshine and chat while others took a walk.

Serendip is an extensive park with a number of different tracks, hiking trails and wetland areas with an abundance of birds, some of which were beautifully coloured. There were large, fenced areas with a collection of native animals and so plenty to see and enjoy. No matter how the

day was spent, I think everyone enjoyed it. It was certainly great to see our fellow Morry Club members again and catch up on what’s been happening to people and their families during this strange pandemic year we’ve all experienced.

Around 4 pm we decided that it was time to go and so we packed our picnic baskets, loaded them into the Morrys and headed for home. A good time had been had by all. Those MMCCV members attending were… Braidy Davies & Peter, Craig Ellis, John and Ann Druery, Percy & Cheryl Scicluna, Wayne Cunningham and Lyn Waites, Geoff & Cheryl Nougher, Mark & Joanne, Graham & Lesley Dines, Rob & Trish Smith.
