A M E S S A G E F R O M M A R V Y MARVY, Temple Sholom’s high school youth group, has had an excellent start to the year. Already, MARVY has had four events. Before the first

event of the year, the MARVY Board convened to plan the upcoming year and bond with one another. We discussed what it means to be a leader in our community, and how we can create powerful experiences for our other friend.

This experience led into our first event of the year. This event was brand new and used to welcome our grade eights into the MARVY family. In this event, part of the MARVY Board and Rabbi Dan went out and "kidnapped" grade eight MARVYites and treat-ed them to a delicious pancake breakfast.

The following weekend, our members in grades nine through twelve went to the NFTY-NW Kickoff at URJ Camp Kalsman. After a long summer it was amazing to reconnect with our friends from across the northwest.

Sukko-ween, our third event, was our first event where the entire MARVY family was together, with record-breaking participation numbers! During this event, we carved pumpkins, sat and learned in the Sukkah, and ate together as a family while watching a seasonal movie.

Our last event showcased our dedication to social action. As youth, we are the future, and we must get involved in social issues. On Saturday, November 23rd, MARVY worked in collaboration with Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup to do a beach clean up at English Bay. As a movement, we understand the impact of our decisions and the result they have on our climate. Moreover, we acknowledge that Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) is one of the essential pillars of Judaism.

We hope everyone is as excited as we are for the coming year. We know the rest of the year will be as excellent as the beginning.

This time, we are happy to welcome Michael Hollander, who will speak about "The New Jew vs. the New Israeli".

The evolving identity of the State of Israel and its citizens - from the socialization in the early generations and the creation of the 'New Jew' to the plurality of Jewish communities and the individualism of the New Millennium. From collec-tivism to individualism, from a social welfare state

to a free enterprise paradigm. Bio: Mike was born in Canada and made Aliyah in 1988. Before making Aliyah, he completed his BA degree at York University, Toronto in History and began his MA degree in Middle Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University. He completed his MA from the Cambridge Center for Jewish-Christian Relations in

2008. Jewish education has always been Mike’s passion and he began to guide in 1994. From 2001–2004, he was a Jewish Agency educational emissary in Great Britain for the Federation of Zionist Youth. He was also a consultant to the “Israel Experience” and helped British youth movements and organiza-tions design new programs and construct their educational storyline for their short-term summer Israel programs. Mike’s diverse and extensive experiences and opportunities have influenced his ability to provide a rich Israel experience to a wide range of groups, including Federations, Birthright, Interfaith groups, political groups, congregational trips, families, adults and more. His areas of expertise include history, politics, Middle Eastern and interfaith studies. Mike is married to Michele and has 3 Israeli-born children. When not guiding, he enjoys running, reading, and music. Cost for dinner: $22 Adult ; $15 Student RSVP: 604.266.7190 or www.templesholom.ca

BEGINNINGS OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IN INFANCY Sunday, January 19, 2020 10:00am at Temple Sholom With Dr. Judith Werker

In this talk we will learn how early language acquisition begins in utero, and how much babies are learning about language – even words – long before they produce their first words. Janet will share research on simultaneous acquisition of two languages in the home (bilingual acquisition) and answer questions participants may have related to understanding infant language acquisition.

Bio: Dr. Werker is the University Killam Professor and Canada Research Chair of Psychology at UBC, and is internationally known for her research

investigating the perceptual foundations of language acquisi-tion in infancy. Janet received her PhD in Developmental Psychology from the University of British Columbia in 1982, assumed her first academic appointment immediately thereafter at Dalhou-sie University, and returned to UBC in 1986. Janet co-founded the UBC Language Sciences initiative in 2015 and is currently Co-Chair of its Steering Committee.

Every home should have its own Chanukiah. There are a wide variety of chanukiot styles. It is not necessary that all eight lights of a chanukiah are in a straight row, but all eight candles must be the same height.

The entire family should participate in the lighting of the Chanukiah. In some families, it is customary for each family member to have their own Chanukiah.

On the first night of Chanukah, the shamash is lit first. Using the shamash, the candle on the extreme right is lit. On the second night, two candles are lit. The new candle is lit first and then the one to its right. In other words, the candles are put in from right to left, but they are lit from left to right. This pattern continues throughout Chanukah to show that each day the miracle became greater. Chanukah candles are not supposed to be used for any other purpose, as they are a symbol of the miracle of these days.

The first Chanukah candle is lit on the evening of Sunday, December 22, 2019.

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu,

melech ha'olam, asher kideshanu bemitzvotav vetzivanu

lehadlik ner shel Chanukah. 1. We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe: You hallow us with your Mitzvot, and command us to kindle the Chanukah lights.

Chanukah Blessings

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu,

melech haolam, she'asah nisim la'avoteinu bayamim

hahem bazeman hazeh. 2. We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe: You showed wonders to our fathers/ mothers in days of old, at this season.

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu,

melech haolam, shecheyanu vekiyemanu vehigianu

lazeman hazeh. 3. We praise You, Eternal One, Soverign God of the universe, for giving us life, for sustaining us, and for enabling us to reach this season.

On the first night of Chanukah all three blessings are said. On all other nights of Chanukah only Blessings number 1 and 2 are recited.
