There are many ways to relax and recharge your batteries. While some already master the art of justdoing nothing, others rather wish to decelerate slowly:by unwinding in spas and pools for adults or families; inhaling fresh mountain air while swimming in warm water; heating up in spacious saunas or an authentic Oriental Hamam; cooling off in crystal-clear mountain streams or lakes; being pampered with soothing treat-ments or the healing methods of TCM; practicing mind-fulness in Taiji, Yoga or Meditation Retreats; walking, hiking, climbing, jogging, trail running, forest bathing, e-mountain-biking or skiing in virgin nature – and of course, enjoying immaculate service and superb food.

If in addition you want to clear your head, stimulate your imagination and release emotional tensions, I recommend you visit our bookstore and our concerts and festivals with great artists on the pulse of time. After all it is music and literature which not only give everything meaning, but also let us experience time truly suspended.

I look forward to welcoming you back or for the first time to Schloss Elmau!

“The cello touches our emotions on a deep and unfathomable level,” Yehudi Menuhin once said. The 66th Chamber Music Week at Schloss Elmau centers on this string instru- ment. Celebrated cellists, outstanding up-and-coming musicians and ex- cellent chamber music ensembles illuminate the wide spectrum of the instrument and its repertoire in numerous concerts. The music journalist Harald Eggebrecht, author of a book on great cellists, gives introductory talks introducing the audience to the world of the cello. The week culminates in and con-cludes with the “Long Night of the Cello” featuring musicians from the Kronberg Academy, the elite school for next-generation cellists from all over the world.

MEDITATION RETREAT WITH B. ALAN WALLACE

8 – 13 March The Way of Shamatha – Soothing the Body, Calming the Mind, Illuminating Awareness

In this retreat we will focus on methods for refining attention and exploring the nature and potentials of the mind through the progressive development of mental and physical ease, attentional stability, and attentional vividness. The methods taught will include first releasing the awareness into the rhythm of the breath and the field of tactile sensations throughout the body, then turning attention to thoughts and other mental activities, and finally turning inwards onto awareness itself. The cultivation of such attentional balance and clarity has been found to enhance performance and creativity, reduce stress, support mental health, and lead to per-sonal transformation in everyday life. And such attention skills are essential for spiritual maturation, for they are central to the development of a focused mind and an open heart.

B. Alan Wallace began his studies of Tibetan Buddhism, language, and culture in 1970 at the University of Göttingen and then continued his studies over the next fourteen years in India, Switzerland, and the United States. During most of that time he trained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk, ordained by H.H. the Dalai Lama, for whom he has intermittently served as interpreter since 1979. After studying physics and the philosophy of science in Amherst College, he went on to earn his Ph.D. in religious studies at Stanford University in 1995. He then taught for four years in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara and is the founder and president of the Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies. He has edited, translated, authored, and contributed to more than forty books on Tibetan Buddhism, medicine, language, and culture, and the interface between science and Buddhism.

This long-term appreciation has resulted in vines of remarkable balance, and wines with depth and precision. The first few bottles of the Nittardi estate’s premium wine “Nectar Dei” went to the Pope early on, a tradition that continues to this day.
