“For thousands of homeowners, polybutylene plumbing has become a recurring nightmare.”

-Ed Bradley, CBS-60 Minutes

Polubutylene (also know as PB or Poly-B) pipe is a flexible, grey pipe that was used in several million homes built from 1970 to the mid 1990s. Due to problems with leaks, Poly-B water pipes are no longer accepted by United States or Canadian building codes, and have been the subject of class action lawsuits in both countries. Poly-B fails without warning because it breaks down from the inside of the pipe over time, which can result in sudden catastrophic damage or severe structural damage, including mold of a pipe has been leaking for some time without detection. The older the pipe, the more likely it is to fail. Not replacing Poly-B in a home has a 60% probability of failure within 20 years, which further increases over time.

Modern West Plumbing & Heating specializes in the complete turn-key removal of Poly-B in your home by a professional, courteous, and experienced team including a Master Plumber. Replacing this pipe in your home will protect your investment and your personal belongings, save thousands on repairs, and add significant value to your property.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT ECAPresident’s MessageBy Paul Clark

By the time this message arrives we will all be in the throes of preparation for the Holiday Season. Your ECA Board wishes you well at this special time of the year.

One usual aspect of preparation is getting your house in order and decorated. The ECA Board is no different in this regard.

Among our efforts, we have focussed on developing policies to support our up to date bylaws. We have dedicated a portion of each board meeting to ratify a number of new policies. We are sprucing up our Com-munity Centre. Work is underway to develop a survey to gather your input on the state of our community and future needs. Once conducted we will dedicate a Spring Workshop of the Board to understand and respond to your input.

Meanwhile at our Fall Workshop of the Board, which will have taken place by the time you receive this message, we plan to conduct a check of progress in our execu-tion of ECA Vision 2022 established earlier this year, and in particular the nine SMART Objectives developed to achieve our vision. These objectives are as follows:1. Develop and execute a stage-wise strategy by 2019 to maximize the benefits of all our ECA assets.2. Fully develop the “Super Supporter” program with the proper organizational structure and operating model to accommodate by 2018.3. Using a prioritized and staged process develop a comprehensive ECA policy manual by 2019.

4. Develop and conduct a comprehensive survey to gain understanding of the community’s wants and needs. Process the survey output and develop/imple- ment corresponding programs and activities by 2018.5. With proper establishment of a baseline and value model developed, triple the ECA membership level by 2020.6. Develop the strategy and appropriate policy to cover the operation of our current and future programs plus our relationship to affiliate organizations and service providers by 2018.7. Launch a program to investigate and revamp our current communication channels by the end of 2017and develop a communication strategy to align with our Vision 2022 direction by 2018.8. Have a comprehensive beautification strategy for all common use areas of Edgemont in place and operat- ing. Specifically: a. LEAF Program successfully operates beyond the current 2020 timeframe b. Signage strategy fully operational starting in 2018. c. Strategy for common fencing, natural and recre- ational spaces developed by 2019. 9. Develop a fulsome strategy to target extended rela- tionships and gain maximum benefits from leveraging/ partnering by 2018.

Structural and operating models in support of Objec-tive 2. will be focussed on at the Fall Workshop.

As you can see we have much on our plate and welcome your support and engagement. Again, our best wishes for the Holiday Season.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN EDGEMONT

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Edgemont!

It’s December and we are again doing Christmas ham-pers for a number of families in our neighbourhood. We are accepting donations at the ECA office. Please have all items to us by December 11th. Food donations, pres-ents, and gift cards are welcome. Ask at the office about other suggested items. We will be wrapping presents on Saturday December 16th at 9AM and delivering the hampers that afternoon. If you are interested to help out with wrapping or delivering, please contact me.

Here are the other volunteering opportunities for De-cember and beyond:•Snow Angels - Clear snow and ice from the sidewalks

of their neighbours who may be less able to do it themselves. Let me know if you are interested (or if you are already doing it!)•Ice rink volunteers –Do you like to flood, shovel, or

generally hang out at the rink? We need you! Just email me at [email protected].•Friday Foodbank deliveries – We deliver food to

needy families in the NW at 10AM Fridays. If you have wheels and an occasional Friday morning open for a good deed, let me know and I’ll get you on my email list.•Wednesday Breakfast Club – 7AM Wednesday mor-

nings a number of volunteers serve around 50 hungry kids breakfast before they head off to school. This is a very important and well-loved program. Would you like to donate or help out? It’s easy.•The Children’s Cottage (childrenscottage.ab.ca) and

the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre (shel-donkennedycac.ca) need new washable quilts and receiving blankets to give to the children in their pro-grams. Maybe you like to sew, or want to make a few Christmas quilts? Contact me for more info.

•The Edgemont Networking Group (ENG) is a group of individuals and representatives from the schools, community organizations and churches in Edgemont that meet once a month to learn what is happening in the community and to work on projects together. Volunteers are welcome.•Edgemont Youth Press – The EYP teen team is writ-

ing articles for this newsletter. Calling all interested teens…•Casino fund-raiser coordinator – This is a great job

and very rewarding.•Volunteer email list – Whenever something new

comes up or there’s a special event, I email it out. Con-tact me to get on the list.

Thanks Edgemont. Joy to the world and love your neighbour!

Leaf Program Report

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN EDGEMONT

Our 2017 LEAF year was quite a suc-cess. We were very pleased the weath-

er co-operated and helped the plantings grow to massive sizes. It was so nice to see all the lovely colours blooming well into the fall.

There have been some new concrete slabs placed on some of our medians and boulevards in preparation for the new spring pot additions.

Helen, the City LEAF crew, and I have been busy planning the 2018 LEAF season. We can-not make definitive plans until after the City LEAF transition meeting which takes place at the end of October. We will report on the tran-sition plans in the coming newsletters and on our web site.

A lot of time, effort and community money goes into the planning and executing of the Edgemont LEAF program. We have noticed that some of our garden and pot plantings have gone missing and have had to be replaced a few times. We ask the community to report any incidences to [email protected].

We would also like to remind the community to call 311 to report any graffiti, illegal sig-nage or any other bylaw infractions. The City of Calgary has a comprehensive list of bylaws on line for our residents to access. The City encourages these calls as it is the only way they have proof of community infractions and needs. Going forward these calls help the City with future community requirement planning.

2017 is coming to an end and the LEAF team would like to wish everyone a very happy holi-day season.

Happy New Year 2018

The LEAF team,Jo-Ann & Helen

If you were taking a walk by the Edgemont ravine on the afternoon of Sep-tember 21st, you would see approximately 700 Tom Baines students and staff running, jogging or walking in the memory of Terry Fox.

Terry Fox was a Canadian hero who ran across Canada on a prosthetic leg to raise money for cancer research. His dream of raising $1 for each Canadian was finally accomplished after countless, challenging days of running when his Mara-thon of Hope fund came to a total of $24.17 million on Feb-ruary 1st, 1981. Unfortunately, the bone cancer that he had originally been diagnosed with in his leg had spread up to his lungs and he had to end his run. He passed away on June 28, 1981. However, thousands of schools across Canada and the world take part in the Terry Fox run each year. At Tom Baines, we’re proud to participate in the Terry Fox run to communicate his message and inspiring story of hope and perseverance.

Many students were new to our school, city, or country this year and for many of them, this was their very first Terry Fox run experience. They got to learn about Terry, and as 8th grade student Jana Dureale explained, “He had a goal, want-ed to do it and never gave up.” Students learned about the importance of perseverance and never giving up on what they’re passionate about. Although it was below 0 degrees and snowy on the day the run took place, everyone agreed that it was a fun event and that they would do it again next year. Karen Luo, who is from China, said that the run was in-credibly special for her as it was her first time seeing snow!

We all got to experience just a small fraction on that day of what Terry Fox had to experience during his marathon. You can visit www.terryfox.org for more information or to donate.

Pet’s Name: Wheels

How did you pick his name? He’s really fast and we liked Degrassi when we were younger.

What breed is your dog? Labradoodle

What’s his favourite treat? Wheels loves all food! His favourite treats are Dentastix and Tomatoes.

Tell me a funny story about your pet: One time, Wheels’ grandparents were staying at our house. They had all of their vitamins on the bedside table. When he was home alone, Wheels found the container of Fish Oil pills, chewed it open and all the whole bottle of pills! He smelled like fish for a whole month! His fur has never been softer though.

What are your pet’s favourite things to do? Wheels loves anything outside: going for walks, hiking, cross-country skiing and even sitting in a swing! Sometimes Wheels rides in a backpack and then runs beside the mountain bike in Nose Hill.

How old is your pet? Wheels is 6 years old.

Anything else we should know about your pet? Wheels is a pet therapy dog. We volunteer at The Alber-ta Children’s Hospital through PALS (Pet Access League Society), www.palspets.com.

If you would like your pet to be the Pet of the Month in the next issue of Inside Edgemont, please [email protected].
