Peters St Kipp Believe College Prep’s Duke Ellington Jazz Band will perform. In New Orleans, musicianship is a centuries-old craft that holds together neighborhoods and communities, and the city’s schools have played an invaluable role in that tradition. This band of New Orleans middle school children takes pride in creating life-long success stories among its members. Sure, the impact of "The District" (1897-1917) on the evolution of "jazz" is arguably dubious, but the musicians from that era transformed the popular music of their day with virtuosity, and highly individual style. Evan Christopher’s’ Clarinet Road ensemble will transform repertoire from the traditional New Orleans canon with special attention on the contributions of Jelly-Roll Morton during this concert. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ December 22 Friday 11:00-12:00 pm French Market Farmers Market Stage Join the NPS Centennial Band featuring Richard Scott for “Making a Jazz Gumbo” with a live cooking demonstration of Louisiana gumbo by Dianne “Gumbo Marie” Honore of New Orleans as seen cooking on the TV show Flip my Food with celebrity Chef Jeff. She hails from a long line of cooks and operated her family’s Creole restaurant in Treme for several years during the 1990′s. The demonstration uses live music and a cooking demo to show how gumbo is a perfect metaphor for jazz, and vice versa. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ December 26 Tuesday 12:00-1:00 pm Dutch Alley - 916 N.
