Events and Activities

Chili Supper & Holiday Tree Lighting Friday, December 1, 4:30 - 7:00 PM

Join the Verona Fire Department, Verona Senior Center, and the Verona Area

Chamber of Commerce at this popular annual event. It’s a fun evening for the

whole community! Proceeds benefit the Badger Prairie Needs Network.

4:30 PM: Chili will start being served at the Senior Center

Suggested donation $5.00 per person

5:00 PM: Tree Lighting will take place at City Park, in front of the Senior Center.

5:30 PM: Pictures With Santa and Craft Activities for Children.

We are in need of LOTS of volunteer help to set up, serve, clear tables, clean up, and assist visi-

tors. Call Alasa at 845-7471 if you can lend a hand for an hour or two. The Fire Department

makes the chili and the Senior Center is responsible for providing desserts, so if you can bring

a donation of baked goods to the Senior Center Friday, Dec 1, between 8 AM and 3 PM, that

would be appreciated! Please cut bars into serving size pieces and use disposable containers.

Holiday Party with the Kat Trio Friday, December 22, 12:30 - 3:30 PM

Wear your favorite holiday sweater to be entered in a prize drawing!

12:30 Ekaterinburg (Kat) Trio: The Kat Trio is one of our favorite musical groups! They

will perform holiday classics, Russian arrangements, inspirational songs, & more.

1:30 Hot Chocolate Bar & Holiday Treats

2:00 White Elephant Gift Exchange: To participate in this fun gift-swapping game, bring a

wrapped gift of modest value, either new or gently used. It can be something you no longer

need, or an item you are “re-gifting”. You never know what you could end up with!!!!

Happy Holidays from all of us at Verona Senior

Center! There is something so magical about

December - the sparkle of fresh snow, hearty

holiday meals, and homes decked out with

lights and greenery. We’ve created a “Winter

Wonderland” for you right here at the Senior

Center. Stop by and tell us about your favorite

holiday traditions. You’ll find friendly faces, free

coffee and tea, and lots of great events this

month. The annual Verona Fire Department

Holiday Tree Lighting & Chili Supper fundraiser

for Badger Prairie Needs Network is on Dec.

1st. We’ve got a Holiday Sing Along on Dec. 4,

Silk Scarf Dyeing on Dec. 11, the Old Time

Fiddlers on Dec. 15, and the Kat Trio on Dec.

22. We have a real treat for you on Dec. 29 - a

New Year’s Dance Party complete with a

dance floor. Come and join in the fun!

Thanks to all who came to the Pie Social in

November. Apparently the switch to Saturday

was a good idea as we sold out of both pies

and barbecue sandwiches! A special thanks to

all who baked pies, to our wonderful

volunteers, and to the Friends of Verona Senior

Center Board who organized the event.

Snowy weather is on its way. Remember, if

Verona Schools close for inclement weather,

the Senior Center also closes. Closings are

posted on our Facebook page and local TV.

OUR FALSE FACE

Donald Zelle

Spousal caregiver, 2016

There comes a time

(When life does not rhyme)

To live it out one day at a time.

No High mountains to climb!

No bronze medals to shine!

Only old memories to pine

And great desire to recline!

Spouse in decline!

Life’s on the line;

Just a matter of time,

Learn to resign.

Life’s become brine!

No fruit on the vine!

Learn to live on a dime.

Cry all the time!

Not a good sign!

Yet, when greeted, we say,

“Everything’s just fine!”

P.S. Of course, that’s not at all the case,

But to keep us from breaking down

We present our false face.

Don Zelle, caregiver & Verona resident wrote this

beautiful poem. In January I will be discussing

some!new volunteer opportunities to help

provide meaningful assistance for our many

caregivers in the Verona area. Stay tuned!

A Holiday Poem - Rudolph’s Dilemma

Rudolph began to confide in Donder:

“This is something I really need to ponder. I know this is something Santa doesn’t want to hear, But I don’t think I can guide his sleigh this year.” Blitzen heard what Rudolph said

And he began to shake his head. He said, “Buddy, you look as tired as you can be. Maybe you need a shot of Vitamin D.”

Rudolph tried to explain his plight.

“I can barely see a thing at night. Way up here the sun doesn’t shine, And it has affected this nose of mine.

I try really hard and can’t get a glow. I can hardly find my way in the snow.” Blitzen said, “Go to Santa and have a chat . . . Sit down with him and explain all that.”

So Rudolph went to the toy shop door.

There was Santa walking the floor. Santa said to the elves, “There are more children than ever; To get them all toys will be quite an en-

deavor.”

Rudolph began to sadly say,

“I don’t think I can guide the sleigh.” Then in came Mrs. Claus, all happy and merry. She exclaimed, “Your nose is barely the size of a cherry!

You have jumped too high in the reindeer games.

You affected your nose and it isn’t the same. It is all covered in starry dust.

Let me get busy and clean it . . . I must.” She took out her brush, her cloth, and her spray.

“We’ll get rid of this star dust if it takes all day!”

She rubbed Rudolph’s nose till he thought it would fall. But when she was done, it was brightest of all!

His nose gave a shine---his nose gave a blink--- And Rudolph said, “I’m beginning to think I’m almost as good as I ever have been.

And I’m sure I can lead the sleigh again!” The elves all cheered in great delight, “Santa can make his journey tonight!”

Health Bits from Nurse Barbara

While most of us enjoy the holiday season, we have

to be aware of the stress it can cause. The rush of

parties, gift shopping, and decorating can be

overwhelming! Here are some tips for overcoming

stress and depression during the Holidays.

• Keep realistic expectations. Expect your family to

be the same as they’ve always been.

• Learn to say NO. To decrease holiday stress,

prioritize your time, money, and energy.

• Laugh. Laughter lowers stress hormones and

improves blood flow, increasing your energy.

• Get enough sleep. The more rested you are, the

less stressful it’ll be to cope with the holidays.

• Start new traditions. Don’t be afraid or too rigid

to be able to explore new traditions. It can re-

duce your stress as well as that of others.

• Get enough sunlight and exercise. Vitamin D and

melatonin are both stimulated by sunlight, and

they both play roles in improving mood and

sleep.

• Limit your alcohol intake. Excessive drinking

affects your physical and emotional health.

• Delegate responsibilities. Ask everyone to help

out in some way.

• Don’t pay for everything. Others will feel more a

part of the celebration.

• Keep your eating habits healthy. Be selective and

ration yourself on amounts of these “once a year

goodies.

” Have a happy, stress free, healthy holiday season!”

We then lived in Fitchburg for 27 years raising our family of two sons and a daughter. And while having the pleasure of being a stay-at-home mom, I did various jobs from the house including, but not limited to, stuffing 30,000 envelopes to running a bookkeeping service.

Once the kids were older, I finally settled as a legal assistant for an estate planning attorney until I retired early to help with my three grandchildren. Besides enjoying people, I have an extensive shade garden; enjoy reading, visiting historic homes and museums, fine dining, and live theater. I like listening to quiet music with a diversified play list including everything from classical to soft jazz, oldies to country, and soft rock to pop. Just nothing in the hip-hop, rap, heavy metal or hard rock genres. But nothing beats family and friends. We see family almost every week and travel with friends at least twice a year. My philosophy on life is to accept people for who they are, surround myself with the people I enjoy, laugh hard and laugh often especially at myself, work hard and always try to do better than what was done before, and to embrace change, for without change there can be no progress.

Friendly Face

Hello everyone! My name is Pat Eggen and I am a volunteer at the Verona Senior Center. You may have seen me working at some of the events and I am also on the Friends of the Verona Senior Center board.

How did I make my way to Verona? Well I was born into a military family - my dad was in the Air Force for 8 years - so we did a little traveling and even lived on Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal for about one and half years. The problem is I was only three when we left so I don't remember anything but I do have pictures! We finally landed on a dairy farm just outside Orfordville, WI, where I lived until I was married. You may even know two of my high school teachers - Dick and Ruth Jensen. In 1972 my husband came home from work one day and said he didn't want to push a pencil the rest of his life (he was a draftsman at the Beloit Corp.) so we moved to Madison. While he studied, I managed a 288 unit apartment complex and learned about humanity. Three years later he become an accountant. (Pencil pusher?)

Thanks You!

Our pie social on November 4 from 11 AM to

5PM was a great success. We would like to

thank Cliff Insurance, Liz Leonard, Culver’s and

Noel Manor for their generous donations. We

had a lot of fun with all the wonderful

volunteers. They were the main reason for our

success. Thank you very much and we’ll see

you all next year.

I would like to explain to everyone what our

fundraiser does for the Verona Senior Center.

The Friends of Verona Senior Center provides

money to purchase food for the Caregivers

group, Parkinson’s group, Veterans group,

Healthy Lifestyles, Coffee Hour, Chat and Chew,

special events and more. We provide monies

for the music everyone gets to enjoy. We also

make funds available to the group Helping

Hands.
