Social Justice
Advent Giving Tree:
The Advent Giving Tree is one
alternative to traditional Christ-
mas gift giving that is sponsored
by Social Justice Ministry. Ra-
ther than buying presents for fam-
ily members or friends, families can instead share their blessings
by providing presents for the organizations that are recipients of
the Advent Giving Tree program.
The tree will be set in the vestibule at the start of the advent sea-
son on November 27. Carol and Dan Berridge prepare the orna-
ments for the tree each year. Take as many ornaments as you
want and bring the requested present to QAC wrapped or un-
wrapped. The gifts will be delivered to the designated organiza-
tions before Christmas. For the scholarship program, we will
provide an envelop on the tree, you can either drop the envelop
in a designated box near the tree or give to either Chris Sitko or
Jack and Nimfa Simpson.
The Social Justice Ministry provides this resource as a way to
put faith into action. The following is a list of the organizations,
which you can support through the Advent Giving Tree this year:
Elisabeth’s New Life Center – pregnancy and family support
Dakota Center - inner city community center for children and
adults
Malawi Scholarship Program – monetary gift will help build
scholarship funds for Change and Be Changed (non-profit set up
by the Hangartners)
More information on Malawi Scholarship Program One of the major activities that Elisabeth and Thomas Hangart-
ner oversee in Malawi is the Scholarship Program that they set
up. This scholarship program started with referrals of students
needing financial help from Peter Daino, a former Marianist
Brother. Initially, the Hangartners provided the funds them-
selves and eventually through other sources such as donations
from QAC members, the scholarship program grew to fund more
students.
Due to numerous referrals, applications for the scholarship pro-
gram have jumped to over thirty students, whereas the budget
allows the support of only twenty. Currently, the scholarship
only funds college students, particularly those who are in the
medical fields who can serve in the hospitals that the Hangart-
ners have helped improve and renovate. Additional infusion of
funds to the scholarship program is needed. Checks should be
made out to Change and Be Changed Scholarship Program. Do-
nations are tax deductible.
Laptop Computer Collection for Malawi Students
The Change and Be Changed non-profit organization is always
in need of used laptops for the use of the college students that
they support in Malawi.
If you have laptop that you are replacing, please consider donat-
ing it to Change and Be Changed. Donations are tax deductible
as charitable contributions. Please contact Jack or Nimfa Simp-
son or Chris Sitko is you have any questions or a laptop that can
be donated.

Ministry of Consoling (dealing with grief over loss)
Spiritual care
Referrals for long term care support
Please allow ample time for scheduling
If you need our support, or know of a community member who
does, please contact Terri Blanken
at 937-723-0151 or [email protected]

only on an occasional basis, please let us know.
Grieving Circle / Peace Circle
Steve Guilfoos, a trained Circle Keeper, will host a Grieving Cir-
cle at 1:30 on Sunday 11 Dec. The purpose is for those who
are hurting, feeling fear, or disenfranchisement from the results
of the presidential election. You will have an opportunity to share
your feelings and fear, address the source, try to understand the
things you control in your life, and discover your steps forward.
The overall purpose is NOT to find solutions per se but an oppor-
tunity to understand and put your feelings in the context of your
life. Before we can begin reconciliation, we need to provide a
safe place to grieve. The Grieving Circle provides that safe space.
Steve will also host a Peace Circle on Sunday 8 Jan. We will at-
tempt to bring folks from both sides of the election with hopes of
increasing understanding and respect for the different perspec-
tives. More info to come in January.
For the Grieving Circle on 11 Dec, you must sign up ahead of
time to ensure we have enough space and circle keepers. Respond
to Steve at [email protected].

Seniors’ Corner
December Senior's Corner: I am writing
this on November 19th. The temperature
dropped nearly 40 degrees overnight from
the mid 70's to the mid 30's. Winter
is upon us but the upcoming Christmas
Season should worm every one's heart; in-
cluding my idle Scrooge.
For good Christmas entertainment at home on your comput-
er or smart TV; Google or Bing "A Christmas Carol" along
with "The Movie" or "The Musical". This will bring up a
large selection to choose from.
With the help or several peoples I have put together a good
list of Holliday Seasonal entertainment.

It was also brought to my attention that Sinclair and Wright
State have an excellent selection of free student and visiting
instructors recitals and concerts. I understand that the ones
at Sinclair are very well produced and are on the order of
concerts. I am including below their relates websites to pro-
vide the schedules and a discretions of the activities.

Wright State problbly has nearly a hundred related concerts
and recitals. I understand that they are all very entertaining
and enjoyable. There is a draw down page for each provid-
ing a more detailed description of each activity.

Christmas Season 2016
Dear Friend of St. Vincent de Paul:
For most of us, the holiday season is one of anticipation. Anticipating the chance to give thanks on Thanksgiv-
ing Day and sharing a traditional dinner with family and friends. Anticipating the arrival of Christmas and all
that accompanies it – presents under a tree, a nearby crèche, and celebrating the arrival of the world’s most special child more than
2,000- years ago.
For the poor and homeless served by St. Vincent de Paul, there is more resignation than anticipation. For many, the magical mo-
ments of the holidays are a memory, not an expectation, and that realization weighs heavily on their hearts, especially those with
children whose Christmas expectations they cannot meet. We do our very best to lift their spirits during the holiday season and, of
course, many of our friends in the community come bearing gifts of every possible kind – and for that we are most grateful, espe-
cially if you are already one of them.
Traditionally, we also attempt to provide each of our shelter guests, and all those served in our other housing programs, with a $10
gift card for Walmart, Kroger, or Meijer. This enables them to buy something personal for themselves, or small gifts for
their children.
As with last year, because our shelter numbers are so high (we are serving record numbers of homeless children), we have
need of approximately 1,000 gift cards.
If you or your organization can help – or if you know of someone else who can – your generosity will be most appreciated. Wheth-
er one card or 100, your contribution will bring a smile to the face, and a positive memory of the holiday season, to those we serve.
To arrange for your contribution, please contact Director of Development Rebecca DeLong at 937-630-3945 or
[email protected]. Or drop off the gift cards that you are contributing at the St. Vincent de Paul administrative offices,
124 West Apple Street, Dayton, OH 45402. (Our offices are in the same building as the Gateway Shelter for Women and Fami-
lies.)
We very much appreciate your consideration of this request, and may you and your family have a joyous, blessed and holy Christ-
mas!
Sincerely,
David Bohardt

Reconciliation: A Gift
from God
On November 16th. two young
members of our community, Mia and Brett, received
the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first
time. The expressions on their faces after meeting
with Fr. Tom were priceless. I think many of us don’t
remember the first time or even the last time we re-
ceived God’s awesome gift of reconciliation. I some-
times think of Reconciliation as the “lost” sacrament,
but it doesn’t have to be!
When we think about Stewardship, we think about
giving our gifts to help our community or another, and
yet, during the Sacrament of Reconciliation we are the
ones that are given a gift – one of forgiveness. Many
of us approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation with fear
and uncertainty, or think why go to confession when did-

The Sacrament of Waiting
In many ways, I think what we celebrate in Advent is the
sacrament of waiting. This time of year there’s more time in
darkness than in light each day. It’s colder outside. The
leaves are off the trees. We know that that big, jolly, happy
celebration of Christmas is coming, but it’s not here yet.
It’s about waiting in hope. Our Advent readings from Isaiah
encourage us in this hopeful waiting:
“Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard
will lie down with the kid…” Isaiah 11:6
“The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will
rejoice and bloom.” Isaiah 35:1
“The Lord will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive,
and bear a son, and shall name him --Emmanuel.” Isaiah
7:14
With all the war and strife and violence in our world today,
Isaiah’s vision can seem like pure fantasy. But during Ad-
vent especially, we are called to walk in faith—even when
such peace and joy seems impossible. We are called to live
this vision of peace now, and believe that the Spirit will even-
tually make the vision a full reality, if we allow the Spirit to
work in us and through us.
Isaiah tells us how we should live: “Strengthen the hands that
are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, say to those
whose hearts are frightened: ‘Be strong, fear not!’” Isaiah
35:3-4
I don’t think that waiting is anyone’s favorite thing, but that is
what we are called to during Advent. It is about really being
present in the present, and walking with God in each step of
the journey. It is about entrusting the future to God.
December Calendar
n’t God already forgive me? Well, yes He has, and will
continue to do so, but only if we ask! The Sac-
rament of Reconciliation is an opportunity to be
closer to God. Here at QAC, we usually have
two planned reconciliation services a year (one
in Advent and one in Lent), but you don’t have
to wait, you can always schedule time to talk
with Fr Tom.
This Gift of God's forgiveness and the removal
of the barriers we place between ourselves and
our community allows us to move forward. Dur-
ing his homily at First Reconciliation, Fr. Tom
used the image of how good we feel once, after a
long day of playing outside in the dirt, we
cleanse ourselves by taking a bath. We feel re-
freshed and are ready to take on the new chal-
lenges of Gods work.
At the last community meeting, David Jennings
wanted us to focus on “Future of QAC--Revive
of Die”. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a
Gift from God that can help us do just that. We
need to forget the past, and open our minds and hearts to
the future.

Prepare Ye the Way
By Steve Guilfoos
I am not worthy
I am not perfect or saintly
Oh how I have tried
But I am also human
I am frail
I am weak
I am imperfect
I am not worthy
In the first snow fall of winter
All the dark and dying are covered
With a sheer blanket of whiteness and purity
Prepare ye the way
And I realize, because of my humanness
I strive to be saintly
I strive to be special
I strive to be valued
Is that not enough to be worthy?
Yet I, in the purity of the first snow
I recognize His ability to forgive
He has only to say the word
And I shall be healed
For He values me
Prepare ye the way
I am now worthy to be
His earthen vessel
