In any given Futsal game, the following things are possible

• Defensively you might zone, press, combine the two

• Your team might face the zone, press or combinations

• You might play a 1-2-2 a 1-3-1 or a 1-4-0 or face the same variety of tactical formations

• You might play with/against a fly goalkeeper (5v4)

• You might have a player sent off and have to play for 2 minutes with 3v4

• Your team may have conceded 5 team fouls and can’t afford to commit another

• You will have restarts and chances to carry out pre-planned corners/kick-ins/free kicks

The game of Futsal will give opportunities to “repeat” similar actions, techniques and skills • Players are exposed to playing under pressure

• There is limited time and space to think

• There is usually pressure from an opponent

• There are real tactical elements that can be developed through the game (zone, press, counter attack, man 4 man)

• It fits ‘developmentally’ with kids who “want to play a game” (Foundation phase)

• It forces quicker decisions to be made

• There are connections to be made with football

The philosophy of Oldham Athletic Football Club Academy:

• Our players will be comfortable in possession of the ball and have a mastery of

the main technical aspects

• We expect players to be able to dominate the 1v1 situation in both attacking and defending.

• Our teams will be playing a passing & possession based game with the aim of getting the ball into attacking areas quickly and with good quality.

• Players will be encouraged to demonstrate variety, cleverness, audacity and calculated risk taking

• • Our players will have the discipline & understanding to know when to press,

when to sit off

Defending in a box 2-2 Defending deep in a 7v7 Game Foundation Phase How we link the two

It has been the main objective to educate the players how to find the links between football and Futsal and not to see them as two

separate ways to play. Defending has been easily transferable and here are some of the key objectives the players have been able to transfer over.

Defending deep in Futsal – All players must get behind the ball when we are defending. Try not to let players play through the centre of the defence.

Defending deep in Football – All players must get behind the ball, be hard to get past, be hard to beat. Stay compact and show players wide.

Taking Futsal Into Academy Games

Attacking - Forward Movements Attacking -Forward Movements Foundation Phase

How we link the two Attacking has been key to learning set moves and easy runs to use in both Futsal and Football games.

The use of language to generate movements has been used when discussing what the players are learning. For example, ‘In the next game lets see if you as a individual can try a movement that gets you in behind the other teams defence’.

Learning how to attack in Futsal games has been taken into football games with ease because the players really enjoy having attacking strategies as they can lead to scoring the goal! Some success we have had with this are:

Players moving in behind defenders (not always where defenders can see them). When players are running to the back post for a sweaty pass, (TAP IN) players making there run inside of a goal post not on the outside because there is more of the goal to aim at.

When moving always being able to see the pass so that they do not turn there back on the ball and are available to receive as much as possible.

Counter Attacking Defending Deep For A Purpose How we link the two

For our young players they have really enjoyed learning strategies that they can use to defend and also counter attack. Counter attacking must start with the players defending well.

The players have learnt that they must get back and defend to earn the chance to counter attack. The transition from defending to attacking has really been emphasised whilst playing Futsal due to the lack of space the players must secure there first pass on the

counter attack. Technical passes that move forward quickly!

The players have started to use scoop passes to get forward and in behind the other teams defence quickly. The players have adapted to the tighter court in futsal and have showed to be able to attack quickly keeping the ball with them in very tight situations. Taking this into football games the players are used to counter attacking and a very fast pace they have found themselves being able to counter attack much more easily on a

bigger pitch.

Futsal is a multiple-sprints sport in which there are more high-intensity phases than in soccer and other intermittent sports (Barbero-Alvarez, 2008.)
