District News

Letter from Superintendent Reilly

December 4, 2015

Parents and/or Guardians:

I believe the safety of our students, faculty, and staff is of paramount importance and that one of the most important

steps we can take to improve the safety of our school community is preparedness. To that end the Cazenovia Cen-

tral School District in coordination with local law enforcement will be conducting a lockdown drill during the month of

December. This drill is an outgrowth of school officials’ efforts to further the District’s preparedness for potential violent

incidents in accordance with Cazenovia’s district Safety Plan.

It is our desire to make this a valuable learning experience for our students and staff. To that end, please know that

school district officials have reviewed procedures with faculty and staff prior to the drill. Please be assured that all efforts

will be made by school personnel to minimize any anxiety for our students. The drill will consist of each building entering

into a lockdown status whereby students will be sheltered in rooms with their teachers until all doors have been opened

by a member of the Emergency Response Team. Students will not be evacuated during this drill and the entire drill should

last no longer than 30 minutes at each building. Following the drill the Emergency Response Team will meet to analyze

and offer feedback on the drill process in an effort to enhance the effectiveness of future drills.

This drill is a vital step in improving our human response in the event of an actual emergency. Additional drills are

planned for the coming spring with the goal of increasing the automaticity of our reaction.

It is the sincere hope of school district officials that this effort and any future drills will serve us well as

we seek to ensure the safety and well-being of the students and staff of the Cazenovia School District.

If you have any questions about this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me at either

[email protected] or 315-655-1317.

Sincerely,

Matthew R eillyMatthew Reilly • Superintendent, Cazenovia Central School

High School NewsNHS Culinary Feat

By Susan Vickers, Ed.D

The 2015-2016 school year is off and running with five Section III titles, 1 state finalist, and 1 state championship ac-knowledging athletic accomplish-ments, and the largest National Honor Society induction ceremony in years ac-knowledging academic and community service excel-lence. On December 3rd, 53 students were inducted into the Cazenovia Na-tional Honor Society, and the reception that followed showcased culinary treats created by their peers

At the start of the school year the schedule found a large number of students with periods 6 and 7 open on odd days, so the counseling office proposed adding a Gourmet Foods class. By offering the class the students would be able to learn something valuable in lieu of sitting in study halls. Approved by administration, Mrs. Kellstrand agreed to take on the last minute class. When asked about the class, Mrs. Kellstrand just bubbles with enthusiasm about their progress, respect for one another, and the sheer fun that occurs each class.

Taking their culinary prowess a little further, the class was asked if they would like to bake the treats for the National Honor Society reception, and the reply was a resounding YES.

Gugino and Streeter Named Lions Club Students of the Month

Michael Gugino, a senior at Cazenovia High School has been se-lected as the Cazenovia Lions Club Student of the Month for September 2015. Michael is the son of Joseph and Brigid Gugino of Cazenovia.

Michael has performed over 400-hours of community service. He volunteers on the Student Core at CAVAC and has served in leadership positions. He was Treasurer during his junior year and is currently Chief of Operations of the CAVAC Student Core. He has also served 3-years in the Teen Summer Volunteer Program at Upstate University Hospital.

Michael was one of five junior boys selected by Cazenovia American Legion Post 88 to participate in Boys State with 1,000 boys from throughout New York State at Morrisville College this July. The boys formed and operated their own government as well as participating in leadership development activities.

Michael was also one of 24 students selected from applications from throughout the state to participate in Medquest this summer. Medquest is a week-long residential camp at Upstate University Hos-pital for students interested in exploring a career in the medical field.

Michael participated in the Academic Decathlon in the spring and won a first place medal in both Math and Science and a sec-ond place medal in both Economics and Art in his division. Michael holds a leadership position in the Communications Club and is the founder of the Cazenovia High School Chess Club. He also partici-pated on the yearbook staff for three years.

The Cazenovia Lions Club is pleased to recognize Michael for his community/school service and leadership.

Justin Streeter, a junior at Cazenovia High School has been se-lected as the Cazenovia Lions Club Student of the Month for October, 2015. Justin is the son of Jennifer and Scott Streeter of Canastota.

High School NewsJustin is a quiet young man, who strives to serve others and do

the right thing at all times. He has been singing in Chamber Choir since 10th grade and has demonstrated a great deal of dedication and willingness to prioritize in order to fulfill the many required commitments of the group. As a member of Concert Choir and also the cast for “Singin’ In The Rain,” Justin has provided a fine leader-ship example for others to follow. He is willing to extend himself outside of his comfort zone in order to inspire and influence others. Justin volunteers regularly in his community, in particular participat-ing each year in the Madison County Walk for Autism. Last year his team raised over $5,000 for this cause. In short, we believe that Justin is deserving of recognition because he does not seek it. He simply lives a life of high moral values, service and caring for others.

The Cazenovia Lions Club is pleased to recognize Justin for his community/school service and leadership.

National Honor Society Inducts 50 New MembersOn Thursday evening, December 3, 2015, the Cazenovia

Chapter of National Honor Society inducted 50 new members. A ceremony was held at the Cazenovia High School Auditorium. Congratulations to the following new members:

Pumpkin Run RecapOn Sunday October 25th the Cazenovia Class of 2019 hosted the Fourth Annual Pumpkin

Run. The event was a huge success, despite the wind and the rain, as families, relatives, and friends among the community came together to have a jovial time of laughter and running; the free bagels, donuts, and candy helped too. The Spooky Sprint was a blast for the children who had the opportunity to show off their Halloween costumes a few days early. The 5K also went well, with Cazenovia’s Elementary teacher, Erich Nieman coming in first in the men’s category, and Cazenovia’s High School teacher, Kara Stauffer, coming in first in the female category.

The Freshman Class of 2019 would like to thank everyone who participated in, sponsored, or showed support in the Pumpkin Run this year. If you are in-terested in helping to continue the tradition look for details in the fall of 2016.

Middle School NewsA Season of Gratitude

The Middle School Interdisciplinary Study Group, composed of staff members from

various curricular areas, welcomed the fall season by encouraging all members of the Middle School community to reflect on the positive moments in their lives. A centrally located bulletin board was created as a plat-

form for staff and students to express their gratitude, and share the bright spots in their days. Messages of happiness and appre-

ciation are written on colorful slips of paper that flutter like leaves from tree branches, filling the space with a wonderful sense of awareness and recognition of even the smallest kind ges-tures. As the holiday season approaches, let’s all take a mo-ment and focus on the gifts we are given each day!

New Woodstock Art Exhibit 2015

Once again, the New Woodstock Free Library has graciously agreed to host an exciting display of Cazenovia student art! On Saturday, December 5th, the exhibit of art-work, created by over 100 Cazenovia Elemen-tary and Middle School students, was unveiled at the New Woodstock Free Library. Work by students in Kindergarten through seventh grade was on

display. A reception complete with refresh-ments was provided for the opening of the exhibit, which was held from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon. It was very well attended by the artists, their parents, and other ap-

preciative community members. Thanks to the wonderful work of the volunteers at the library this was an exciting opportunity for the students to showcase their efforts.

The artwork will be on display through mid-January of the New Year, and it is well worth a trip to view the creations of these talented students. The artwork ranges from watercolor landscapes, to portraits, to ab-stract pieces. You can enjoy everything from paper sculptures, to dream catchers, and even a Van Gogh style mural created by the entire fourth grade! A wide variety of styles and mediums are represented.

We hope you will join us in celebrating the arts in our schools, and the success of our children. Please visit the New Wood-stock Free Library and be inspired and impressed by the talented young people of the Cazenovia School District.

On October 2, 2015, Mrs. Claudia Johnson and Mr. Kyle Martin traveled with the Regent’s Earth Science classes at the High School to Herkimer Diamond Mines as part of the Mineral and Rock Unit. This trip brought back a long tradition that many

Cazenovia Earth Science students have taken part in over the years. Herkimer is the site where beautiful double-terminated quartz crystals are found that are close to 500 million years old. Herkimer

Diamond Mines also has a museum with a wealth of information and displays about gems, geology and the geologic history of New York State. The students com-pleted activities on the bus ride and at the museum and of course searched for the quartz crystals in the quarry area. Thank you to Mr. Knuth and Mr. Reilly and all the chaperones for support-ing this field trip that is so popular and educational!

Laker Sports NewsFall Varsity Teams Earn NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Status

We are pleased to announce that eight varsity teams qualified as New York State Scholar Athlete Teams this Fall (2015). Thank you all for supporting these student-athletes throughout the school year. One of our annual goals in the athletic department is to have all varsity teams earn NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete status. Member schools that qualify 100% of their varsity teams for an entire school year can ap-ply to be recognized as a “School of Distinction”.

Volleyball (8) 12 94 16 * To qualify as a “NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Team” the team “Average”, which is based on a minimum number of student-athletes’ grades (varying by sport), needs to be 90.0 or higher. Any additional students on a team, who also averaged 90% or higher, are considered scholar-athletes as well, but their scores do not impact the team aver-age used for team qualification. Usually, the highest team average possible is used to try and rank the team as high as possible across the state by sport.

Girls Varsity Tennis Captures First Section III Title Since 1992

Way back on October 10th, Cazenovia Girls Tennis made history. At the Utica Parkway Tennis Courts, Cazenovia defeated league

rival Skaneateles to bring home the 2015 Class C Section III Champion-

ship. This was the first time since 1992 that

the girls’ tennis team has earned the title. Congratulations to the entire team and

to Coach Jennifer (Schutzendorf) Hooley on a fine season! The squad entered the Class C tournament as

the 5-seed and defeated 4-seed Westmoreland by a team score

of 4-1 in the quarterfinals on Oct-5, defeated the 1-seed Sauquoit Valley by a team score of 4-1 in the semis on Oct-7, and then 2-seed Skaneateles by a team score of 5-2 in the finals!

Field Hockey Team Advances to State Finals; Wins 10TH Straight Section III Championship

It seems that a great deal of unfair pressure is placed annually on the Field Hockey team. Based on the programs past successes, much is taken for granted by local fans each season. Despite this traditional pressure it faces, the team once again has surpassed the lofty expectations set by its toughest critics… themselves. For the 10th time in as many years, the Cazenovia Field Hockey team won sectionals and again flirted with another state championship mak-ing it all the way to the NYSPHSAA Class C finals on November 15th at Maine-Endwell H.S. vs. Whitney Point, making them the 4th team in school history to achieve such a feat.

No doubt about it, congratulations are in order!

Congratulations to the seniors – Baily Forret, Bella Wheeler, Caro-line Hudson, Maria Stalder, Madison Langey, Allie Karmis, and Maria Groetz, the juniors – Janie Kempf, Morgan Giordano, Delaney Yates, Lizzy Shephard, Erin Howles, and Caeli Carroll, the sophomores – Zoe Shephard and Mikaylee Whalen and to freshmen – Emmi Dolbear and Katie Ammann. Congratulations to the varsity coaching staff, Lorraine Scheftic – Head Coach and Beth Stewart – unpaid Assistant Coach. Special thanks goes to Maureen Carroll, JV Head Coach, who helped out with varsity during the season, and into post-season and to Caitlin Byrne – Modified Head Coach, who also attended as many games and practices as possible in post-season.

With an overall record of 19-3, winners of the OHSL American Division, Section III Class C, a NYSPHSAA Regional Championship, and making it to the Class C State Championship Game, the 2015 Lakers have much to be proud of.

Cazenovia Student-Athletes Celebrate College Decisions

Laker Sports News

During the NCAA Signing period of November 11-18 Cazenovia High School held press conferences for several student-athletes planning to attend college next year and participate on a college lacrosse team.

The following 7 seniors announced their official plans:

YOU’LL LIKE BEING A CAZ VIP!

Caz Points of InterestJust ask Kevin Eldred, Jen-

nifer Hunt or Ann Shephard what it means to be a Laker VIP. As winners of the Caze-novia Athletic Association’s (CAA) first ever parking VIP raffle drawing, the three-some and their “posses” enjoyed prime Varsity foot-ball parking at Buckley-Volo Field, four free tickets for

each home contest, and fast track concessions.

“I liked the princess park-ing best,” said Ann Shephard, “Purposely timing our arrival until moments before kick-off, my family and I really enjoyed our parking spot just outside Buckley-Volo Field. This was definitely worth the $20 spent on raffle tickets! Plus 100% of

ticket proceeds benefited Caz student athletes. It was a win-win-win for everyone!”

This year’s raffle netted $516 from ticket sales. CAA organizers expect an even larger turnout for the 2016 football season. Stay tuned for ticket sales scheduled to begin next spring.

Memberships and concession

sales allow CAA to promote and recognize peak performance of our students and provide necessary support where and when needed. In 2014 CAA invested over $10,000 in school athletics across all 24 high school teams. For more information on how to join CAA or to volunteer at school sponsored athletic events, contact Laurie Cor-nell at [email protected].

Kielbasinksi and Filkorn help Legion Post 88 celebrate Veteran’s DayWith the help of Mrs. Teresa Campbell and Mrs. Mary Coburn, The Cazenovia American Legion Post 88 was honored to have C.C.S.

students Emily Kielbasinski singing our National Anthem and Maddie Filkorn play the violin rendition of Ashokan Farewell during the reading of the Gettysburg Address at our Veterans Day Ceremonies at Memorial Park on November 11th, 2015.

Many veterans came up to me after the ceremonies and said that their service to our country became more meaningful to them because of the talents of these young women. They felt that their sacrifices were part of the foundation upon which these students stand today.

Sincerely, Al Keilen, Vice Commander Cazenovia American Legion Post 88
