Page 3 Editors’ note: This is an opinion article. “Why did the bell just ring—it’s only 12:20?” “Wait, do we not get fifteen minutes for break now?” “Why do I have a class in between lunch and x-block?” These cries of confusion were heard throughout the hallways during the first new Thursday schedule. The schedule change shortens peri- ods three, four, five, the break, and lunch. It also moves ad- visory between fourth period and lunch, and moves fifth period between lunch and x- Block. In previous years, advisory only took place on long Fri- days, not during winter’s short Friday schedule. This year, however, advisory has been revamped and added to ‘short Thursdays’. It is supposed to be taken more seriously now as it is an inter-grade period— the freshmen with the sopho- mores and the juniors with the seniors—and, of course, as it meets every week. The question remains: is advisory worth confusion and shorter classes? I asked students whether they do anything valuable in advisory. Many said that they watched movies and ate dur- ing advisory. Of the few that claimed to have been produc- tive in advisory, none remem- bered what it was that they had done. Some students even admitted to skipping advisory altogether, because it is “a waste of time.” No one said that Thursday advisory was worthwhile. While many did say that ad- visory was enjoyable and re- Rabbi Durani dubbed it, “The famous tourna- ment,” and Molly Boyn- ton called it, “A great idea.” With over twenty- five teams and over fifty people, including four teachers, the Super Smash Brothers Me- lee tournament is one of—if not the biggest— student-made tourna- ments in Maimo history. Skilled or unskilled, students of all kinds are participating in the event. Super Smash Brothers Melee—or SSBM—is the best-selling game on a 2001 video game console called the Nintendo Game- Cube, with over 7 mil- lion copies sold accord- ing to nintendo.com. Even now, there are still worldwide tournaments, such as Apex 2014 and Evo 2014, in which the top class of players com- petes. One might expect the fan base of such an old game to shrink over time. Over the past few months, the phrase “Death with Dig- nity” has spread like wild- fire. This is all thanks to Brittany Maynard, a twenty- nine year old woman who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer this past Janu- ary. While she could have stayed and died in the hospi- tal, she realized that the rest of her body was young and healthy, and while the cancer was eating her brain, physi- cally she was completely ca- pable. Maynard would have suffered in the hospital for weeks, maybe even months, and she did not want her family to see her like that. Therefore, after extensive research, Maynard decided to choose “Death with Digni- ty.” This is an end of life op- tion for terminally ill people who have a prognosis of six months or fewer left to live. All these patients have to do is take a pill. The pill kills them and thus spares them unnecessary suffering. This allows patients to choose when and how they want to die. Frederick Pilot Middle School in Dorchester. Joanne Rose, a Maimonides parent volunteer, has spearheaded the paint- ing for the past two years. Rose explained what prompted her to choose this project. “We were looking to do a project in the Dorchester neighborhood since it is geographically very close to Brook- line and yet very different in so many ways, [including its] economics, cul- ture, [and] demographics,” explained Rose. “We were hoping to find a project that would enable Maimo stu- dents both to help others and to visit a school that on the surface is noth- ing like Maimo, and yet is similar in some important ways. For example, both schools are very ‘values’ driven. “The non-profit organization that connected us to the school is called Project R.I.G.H.T.
