December 2014December 2014December 2014
Greetings BASS Families,
December is here again. I feel
like I am on a continuous sled ride
down the snowy moun-
tain...Whoosh, how time flies by!!
The great thing is that sledding is a
whole lot of fun!
Provided on page 2 is the survey
from the Lights On Afterschool
event in October. We estimate at
least 500 families enjoyed Paradise
Park. Each year we have a survey
room upstairs. We encourage fami-
lies to complete the surveys. First
of all, it enters you for a chance to
win some super fabulous prizes.
Secondly, we do take all comments
into consideration
when making program
changes and understanding better
how to inform families as to what
we do daily with kids. We are
pleased with the majority of the
answers; however, we will take
some action on the ones that
scored low as well as the comments
regarding our accounting software.
We encourage you to attend next
year and visit the survey room up-
stairs and give us your comments.
“81” out of 500+ was not a success-
ful response from the majority that
attended. We want to hear from
you.

Attention Parents—BASS is collecting empty paper towel rolls and empty 2 liter soda
bottles for a Spring Break project. We’ll be happy to take these off your hands and
save space in your recycle bin at home. Just make sure to rinse and air dry the bottles
before dropping them off with your Site Coordinator.
District Email Addresses Have Changed! - Please note that all Lee’s Summit R-7 district
email addresses have changed. Read the complete article detailing benefits and fea-
tures on page 11 under Lee’s Summit District News heading.
6 Steps to Good Digital Parenting—The article in the link below was included in the National Afterschool Associa-
tion's email news that was recently received. As a parent, we should welcome any resource that can help us keep
up with our kids and their exposure to technological advances that seem to be faster than the speed of sound or
lightning! It is impossible to keep kids from technology, nor do we want to. Many good things come to us through
the use of technology. However, there are negative sides and we have a responsibility to help teach our kids to be
safe in a technology-based world. Enjoy this short article with some great tips!

Hazel Grove Kids Country has been having a lot of fun sending
their Mascot, Captain America, home on the weekends. Captain
America is courageous, kind and loyal—traits we try to carry with
us every day. Kids get to take the Captain home at the end of the
week if they have displayed upstanding citizenship and friendship.
Shaving cream was recently a big hit at Trailridge Kids Country.
No, we didn’t put shaving cream on our face; we put shaving
cream on the tables and enjoyed feeling it between our fingers.
We had fun writing and drawing in it on the tables.
At Prairie View Kids Country, they’re gearing up
for the winter with indoor snow!
Highland Park students will be busy making cards
and stockings filled with holiday coloring sheets,
crayons, and a candy cane to bring some holiday
cheer to the kids at Children's Mercy Hospital.
December is a magical month. There are parties, school programs, special attractions
and events around town, beautiful lights and decorations everywhere, school break, and of
course the holidays. December is also the month when lots of new toys find their way into
homes. Below are some websites that address toy safety. Please have a safe and happy December.

Richardson Kids Country students participated in a Community
Service Project by making "thankful turkeys" that were used as
table toppers at the Hope House in Lee's Summit. The kids also
prepared a kit of the thankful turkey supplies that were donated
to the children of Hope House so they could craft their own tur-
key.
Hawthorn Hill Kids
Country is sending
care packages to our
troops in Afghanistan
throughout this school
year as our community
service project. With
the support of our Kids
Country parents, the
kids are donating items
that are on the wish
lists supplied to them.
Everyone is so excited
and can’t wait to see if
they receive a reply.
What an outstanding

Lee’s Summit District News
The Lee’s Summit R-7 School District recently com-
pleted a transition to Gmail for its approximately 2,600
staff members. Students have had Gmail accounts for
around three years, and staff members are making the
transition this fall.
Email domains are being shortened from
@leesummit.k12.mo.us to @lsr7.net. Email messages
sent to the old domain name will be forwarded for some
time, although the district is encouraging the public to
switch to the shorter Gmail domain. Staff members are
notifying school district parents and others about the
email address change throughout the fall and the remain-
der of the school year.
For the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, the transition
has several advantages. The district’s long-time email ser-
vice is through Lotus, a software pro-
gram that is difficult to obtain support
for since it is considered end-of-life. By moving away from
Lotus, the school district will no longer have to pay for
maintenance, support and archiving through the Lotus
service.
Gmail is free for education entities, has unlimited stor-
age and free archiving for users. For the past few years,
the district has used the suite of tools in Google Apps for
Education, and Gmail is one more tool being added for
district staff. The suite of tools may be used for collabora-
tion and communication on numerous electronic devices
and from any location with internet access.
