Season’s Tweetings! I admire and respect the fact that my mother still prefers to write and post a letter (real pen and real paper). There’s something about the time and care taken in that process which is easily lost in more up-to-date forms of messaging. That said, I’m convinced that moving with the times is key to being able to get the message out there. Do you remember how that happened when Jesus was born? It was an unmissable announcement, the tweet of all tweets that shocked slumbering shepherds, propelling them onto a life-changing journey to witness this greatest of all wonders.
The message? “Fear not! Good news; today a Saviour is born. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth!”
Hashtag or not, this remains a message for all times. The news of the birth of Jesus, God’s gift to the world, focuses our gaze on this nativity - not just on the baby in the manger but on the bigger picture of God, his glory and his wonder, and his gift of salvation and peace to this earth.
And as it’s not Christmas just yet here’s a tweet from Gerrard Kelly that brilliantly captures the essence of this Christmas approaching Advent season:
“Our waiting is the waiting of the world. The adventure of advent is for all. Where
humanity hungers for hope, heaven answers.”

The purpose of the Wendover Society is to help protect and enhance the charm and character of Wendover. Our activities include organising interesting events for members of all ages, gathering views on local issues and managing our own nature reserve. Membership costs £10 annually which includes all household members of voting age. New members will not be asked to pay until April 2014.

Wendover Swimming Association Monday 9 Dec, 7:30pm, Wendover Library Rm The Charity Commission are now processing the application to form WSA as a charitable incorporated organisation. This should be completed in the coming weeks, after which Wendover Swimming CIO will be in a position to take over the operation of the Wendover Pool. The WSA are working closely with the John Colet School with a view to taking over the Pool on 1st January 2014. This meeting for all members of the WSA will ask members to formally approve that the WSA is replaced by Wendover Swimming CIO and the reserves of the WSA are transferred to the new organisation.

This is going to stay light-hearted, yet informative, folks, so grab a few minutes and read about what can get you through Christmas, keep you healthy and get you fired up for staying active.
PARTYING: - The typical Christmas party season features lots of alcohol, sugary and high fat food and not enough exercise, apart from the dance-floor perhaps. Whatever happens, try not to say to yourself, “Oh, it only happens once a year,” and then live to regret it in January, panic, over-diet (consume too little), and over-train and end up injured, or deflated with a frazzled metabolism.
BATTLING WITH THE BOOZE: - Alcohol dehydrates you, and if you exercise or are very active, you may already be dehydrated from training. If possible, alternate alcohol with a glass of water. Before you go to bed, make sure you have a big glass of water to flush out your kidneys. It takes an hour to process a unit of alcohol, so four pints of lager or a bottle of wine could take 10 hours to be completely gone from your system. But do try to stick to your schedule. If you've slightly over-indulged, a bit of exercise will do you good.
EATING RIGHT: - Hangovers can mean you're tempted to pig out on junk food, but instead, replace lost salts with good food with minerals and vitamins. It matters even if you don’t drink, because healthy levels of vitamins and minerals will keep your immune system boosted, which is essential in cold times.
STICKING TO YOUR SCHEDULE: - Whether it is a sleep pattern or activity schedule, stick to keeping active. Be positive and find someone to train with and inspire each other. The more active you are, the happier you are likely to feel! Cat Booker

Halton Apprentices HAAA Triennial Celebration Weekend Former RAF Halton apprentices remember On Saturday 21 September, RAF Halton once again hosted the Halton Apprentice Association Triennial reunion. This was the 33rd anniversary of the event with 950 former Apprentices who trained at No 1 School of Technical Training “On Parade”.
Although an overcast sky threatened rain it did not spoil the day, the purpose of which was to bring old comrades together to share memories and provide the opportunity to see how today’s young Airmen and Airwomen set out on their career pathways. A number of the recruits had helped in the refurbishment of the memorial to Polish Apprentices who trained at Halton during WWII.
After a splendid lunch, the Entries represented marched and paraded for the Sunset Ceremony under the watchful eye of our President, Halton’s Station Commander, Group Captain Simon Harper to the sounds of the “Golden Oldies” Association Pipe Band and RAF Halton Voluntary Band; the oldest marcher being 92 years of age. The parade was ably guided by Warrant Officer Crossley and his drill instructors of Recruit Training Squadron.
Following the Sunset Ceremony, the traditional march down from Henderson Parade Square to St George’s Church took place to the majestic sound of the pipes and drums, including several renditions of the Black Bear. The Association was honoured to have the Queen’s Colour of Number One School of Technical Training, now at RAF Cosford, and originally presented at Halton in 1952, on parade. Following the Service conducted by the Reverend (Wg Cdr) Tony Gilbert, which ended the day’s formal events, Min Larkin of the 63rd Entry and Deputy Chairman for many years, finally handed over the baton to Duncan Grant, formerly of the 99th Entry. Halton Apprentice Chairman, Group Captain (Ret’d) Geoff Burton, an ex apprentice of 100th Entry, and Station Commander of RAF Halton 1992-4, said: “As always, such an excellent occasion was only made possible by the magnificent support the Association receives from RAF Halton. Special mention should be made of Warrant Officer John Porter, who project managed the Station’s involvement, which required support from almost all departments on the Station, who rose to the challenge and ensured the day was a great success. To them all we send our sincere thanks.”

Polish Memorial Unveiled In 1943 several hundred Polish boys, some as young as 13 and many orphaned, endured a harrowing journey via the middle east to the United Kingdom and freedom. After a period of acclimatising to their new environment, many were sent to RAF Halton to start Apprentice Training with the 49th and 50th entries. Although still bearing the scars of their ordeal, they settled enthusiastically into life as Halton Brats and graduated in 1948.
In 1944 a stone flag staff base painted in the colours of the Polish flag was erected at the edge of the Henderson Parade Square at the R e c r u i t T r a i n i n g Squadron site. Each
morning at Colour Hoisting Parade the Polish flag was raised, and then lowered at sunset.
By the turn of the century the site had deteriorated almost beyond recognition and, on seeing it in that state, Charlie Jeffery, (47th Entry), decided he would completely restore it as a memorial to his Polish friends. Over the past few years our fickle climate has taken its toll again and the site began to look in need of some serious care and attention. Fortunately rescue was at hand, when Cpl Andy Brown and a team
of four recruits volunteered to renovate it for this Triennial Reunion. Cpl Brown attended the event and was given a huge vote of thanks from the Association for the magnificent job he and the recruits did, he was also asked to pass on thanks to team members unable to be there.
Min Larkin, ex-Vice Chairman of the Halton Apprentice Association, said: “Opportunity was taken during the 2013 Triennial Reunion to unveil the recently restored memorial to the Polish Apprentices who served in the 49th and 50th Entries. Located on the side of Henderson Square the memorial is a replica of a flag pole base which was in the form of a Polish flag. At the Colour Hoisting Parade each morning in the 1940’s both the RAF ensign and the Polish flag were raised. We were delighted to see Charlie Jeffery at the event and thank him most sincerely for preserving this important part of our heritage.”

Property Compensation Consultation Please respond by Wednesday 4 December Politicians have already voted on the Paving Bill and we fully expect the Hybrid Bill to be deposited by the end of November. We await the outcome of the Supreme court hearing which may or may not cause some delay. So we have to proceed on the basis that it will go ahead and seek the best compensation for the people of Wendover, and the best mitigation of its impacts.
Given our win in the Judicial Review, HS2 Ltd and the Department for Transport are having to re-run the property compensation consultation. Everyone needs to respond. The closing date is Wednesday 4 December 2013. If you have not responded yet then please do so now before it is too late.
What has changed since the last Consultation? There is still a 60 metre Safeguarded Area, either side of the centre of the track. The previous 120 metre Voluntary Purchase Zone has been replaced by a Rural Support Zone (RSZ), whose boundary is to be determined. The actual method of compensation could be either a Property Bond or Voluntary Purchase. It is not expected that this zone will be materially larger than the previous zone, so very few homes will be eligible for compensation. After that there is the Long Term Hardship Scheme for owner occupiers who are “likely to be substantially
adversely affected by the construction or operation” of the route, and bought their property before HS2 was first announced in March 2010. Failing that you can claim under the Statutory Part 1 Compensation, for the reduction in value of your property caused by the physical effect of the operation of HS2 (but not any effect on you personally). This can be claimed only after HS2 has been running for a year, ie not before 2027 (14 years away).
We believe it is grossly unfair that the people of Wendover are being asked to pay for HS2 twice – once as taxpayers, and secondly as a community which will suffer property blight and construction disturbance. If the government can afford to build HS2 then they can afford to properly compensate people and communities impacted.

Christmas Fundraising – Help Rennie Grove Hospice keep families together this Christmas Knitters wanted for Festive Fundraiser Rennie Grove Hospice Care is calling for nimble-fingered needlewomen to rally and start knitting special mini Christmas stockings to raise funds to help keep families together this Christmas. The charity is looking for groups or individuals to get involved in the new festive fundraising initiative by knitting the stockings, filling them with seasonal treats and selling them at Christmas fetes, bazaars, coffee mornings, cake sales or any other type of get-together. The money raised will help fund the 24/7 responsive hospice at home nursing service provided by Rennie Grove which operates on every day of the year. Access to this practical nursing support throughout the festive season enables patients to be cared for at home and keeps hundreds of families together at this special time of the year. Rennie Grove Community Fundraising Manager, Penny Crosswell said: “The mini stockings are fantastic for festive chocolates or candy canes, mini pampering toiletries or even for treats for our four legged friends. The possibilities are endless! We’d really love people to get involved
with this brand new fundraiser and do whatever they can. If people are happy to knit but aren’t able to stuff or sell the stockings, we’d still like
to hear from them. “We provide the pattern and the great thing about the stockings is that they are small, so they don’t take too long to knit and can even be made with bits of wool left over from other patterns. We can also provide branded stickers to put on the front of the stockings so that people know that the money raised is going to a good cause.”

Father Christmas 5.45pm Wendover & District Round Table have organised their Santa Float to deliver Father Christmas to the marquee. The December itinerary can be seen on page 11.
Vintage Disco 6 to 8pm
The theme of the Switch On this year is Vintage Christmas. Anyone who’d like to is welcome to dress up in the styles of the 1940s and 1950s. The disco will start up as the last marquee event of the evening. Members of Musical Kidz Co will lead the dancing.

Late night Shopping Competition Stuart Fantham Solicitor has organised a Spot the Santa competition which will take place on the evening of Wednesday 4 December. Families should go into the office in Great Lane, between the High Street and Back Street, where they can pick up an entry form for the competition. The competition involves looking for a Santa related poster in some of the shops which will be open on the evening. Completed forms can be returned on the evening or the next day. Judging will then begin. The prize is a £50 Marks and Spencer voucher so it’s well worth a try.
Charitable opportunities Several charities will be fund raising on the evening of W e d n e s d a y 4 December. Florence Nightingale Hospice is the main charity being supported on the evening. There will be volunteers collecting donations but you can always warm yourself in the shop on the High Street.
The Rennie Grove Hospice Shop is also open and Peach Lane Studios in Aylesbury Road is organising a photo opportunity raising money for its junior offshoot The Pepper Foundation. They are setting up a Santa’s Grotto as a seasonal backdrop for the photos. The Kings Farm Shop Hog Roast on the Manor Waste will be donating its profit to the Clock Tower Restoration Fund. Once again, Stuart McCurry is on his stationary bike pedalling away for Help for Heroes.

Seasonal flu Flu is a highly infectious illness caused by a virus infecting the lungs and upper airways, it is spread in the small droplets of saliva coughed or sneezed into the air by an infected person or on their hands. Common symptoms are sudden high temperature, aching, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, runny nose and a dry cough. Flu is more severe than the common cold and can last for up to a week.
Healthy people with flu do not need to contact the surgery as they will usually get better on their own: antibiotics are not effective. It is important to rest at home and take plenty of fluids. Paracetamol or ibuprofen will help relieve flu symptoms.
Contact us if any of the following apply: • Your symptoms have got much worse, or have lasted for longer than a week. • You have developed symptoms that are not typical of flu, such as breathlessness or a rash. • You have a long-term medical condition.
If have not yet received flu vaccine and wish to be vaccinated, and are in one of the eligible groups, please contact Reception as soon as possible.
Safe alcohol drinking Regular consumption of what may seem like small amounts of alcohol can seriously damage your liver. For example a couple who share a bottle of wine every evening are both at risk: between them they are consuming about 10 units of alcohol a day, way in excess of the recommended safe limits. We advise: • Men should drink no more than 3-4 units of alcohol per day (equivalent to a pint and a half of 4% beer) and women 2-3 units (equivalent to a 175 ml glass of wine). • Have 2-3 days a week when you don’t drink any alcohol. • If you are driving don’t drink at all – even below the legal limit, reaction times are significantly slowed.

Staying Warm The Buckinghamshire Affordable Warmth Network is a longstanding service working to reduce the number of people in fuel poverty; and so improving health & wellbeing. There are three primary elements to delivery of this service.
First, we run the Affordable Warmth Helpline 0800 107 0044, able to give impartial expert advice on all issues surrounding Affordable Warmth. This includes: reducing energy bills, increasing energy efficiency of properties, switching energy supplier and how to stay warm over winter, and is promoted towards all residents likely to be struggling with rising energy bills, or those vulnerable to the cold. Secondly, we undertake outreach activity, engaging with the public on the subject of keeping warm and well; this includes delivering talks and attending events such as information days, health and wellbeing fairs and attending flu clinics. Thirdly, we deliver training to front line staff promoting the importance of affordable warmth, the dangers of fuel poverty and of living in the cold home, and including the signs to look out for, and the help available to alleviate the underlying problems. All outreach and training sessions are free of charge as we are kindly funded by Bucks County Council, the four District Councils across Buckinghamshire and Public Health. The network also produces a range of literature, including a 28 page ‘Easy Save’ booklet packed full of tips to keep in control of energy bills. Wendover Arm Trust Working Parties Thanks to good weather in September and October the target of another 20 metres of lining was completed each month. The bank lining for Stage 2 is now complete, only 30 metres of bed lining need to be finished before Stage 2 is 100% complete.
Stage 2 will be completed over the first few days in November and relining will then carry on in Stage 3 until we reach Bridge 4A, the location of the next bund for re-watering 450 metres, over ¼ mile, making a total of 770 metres re-watered as well as two footbridges constructed by the Trust’s restoration volunteers since 2005.
Theft of Bench Plaques The Trust’s Restoration Committee have researched possible replacement plaques and have proposed a composite plaque of hard plastic between two layers of aluminium with powder coated lettering. It has bevelled edges and can be secured with high security stainless steel screws.

Free Trees for Communities The Woodland Trust is offering community g r o u p s , y o u t h g r o u p s and schools the chance to apply for packs of free trees for delivery in March 2014.
Applications are being accepted up until 9 January next year. Whether groups are interested in helping wildlife; creating a faith, or inter-faith, green space; planting for remembrance, creating a community garden or allotment; or just want to enhance their local area - any community groups are very welcome to apply for free packs of saplings. They have over 3,000 packs to give away in spring and they come in three sizes – 30 saplings, 105 saplings and 420 saplings in various themes (hedge, copse, wildlife, wild harvest, year-round colour, working wood, wild wood and wetland).

Golfers Drive a Wedge of Cash! Golfers have clubbed together to raise over £1,500 for WheelPower, the wheelchair sport charity based at Stoke Mandeville Stadium. Members of Ellesborough Golf Club near Wendover have continued their great support for the charity. This year members were challenged to the “WheelPower Cup” and the “Bridge Drive” to raise the money to provide life transforming sport opportunities for disabled children and adults. The club recently presented WheelPower Chief Executive Martin McElhatton with the cheque. Martin said: “Ellesborough is a Golf Club with wonderful spirit and WheelPower is incredibly grateful for their support. Our sincere thanks go to everyone involved, the fundraising will make a huge difference in the local community.”
Wendover Theatre Society WTS will be performing two one act plays on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 April 2014. The first play, a comedy, is titled "Wednesdays," by Trevor Harvey. The plot concerns a mother and her daughter who are both linked romantically to the same man. The second play, also a comedy, is entitled "Love or Nearest Offer," by Hugh O'Brien. Set in a dating agency in Australia, the plot involves a former used car salesman who has inherited half the business and has his own ideas on how a dating agency should be run. Auditions for parts in either play will take

Wendover Swimming Association John Colet School and Wendover Swimming Association have been working together to agree how Wendover Pool should be transferred from the school. Some very constructive discussions in October led to a draft agreement being drawn up in early November which was being reviewed and refined during November. The agreement will be put to meetings of Academy Trustees of John Colet School and of Wendover Swimming Association Committee in early December. When this agreement is finalised the lawyers acting for the school and for Wendover Swimming can turn it in to a formal lease of Wendover Pool. Both sides are working towards transferring the Pool on 1 January 2014.
The John Colet School and the Wendover Swimming Association are working hard together to ensure that swimming continues in Wendover, in our own community pool, and both organisations look forward to making further announcements in the coming weeks.

Wendover Community Library One Year On Wendover Community Library opened one year ago this month on 1 December 2012. After initial fears that Wendover could lose its Library, a structure was agreed that involved Bucks County Library Service working with the local community. After its first year the Community Library is thriving. The overwhelming proportion of the running costs are funded by BCC, and the role of the Community is to enhance the service, ensuring that the needs and preferences of the local community are met.
Working with our Library Manager Susan Morton, and our Library Assistant Mel Greasby, we have a team of Volunteer Counter Assistants, who have all passed successfully through the Library Service’s training programme. Volunteer staff are also involved in specific activities, for example in some of the events organised for children. We owe a big “Thank you,” to all those who are working as volunteer staff in the Community Library.
The Community Library Meeting room is used by a wide range of groups, for many varied activities. Through the generous support the Library has received from local groups, this room will be redecorated, and we hope to install a state of the art interactive screen that will widen the range of activities for which the room can be
used. The Library itself is now being used for Adult Education classes, usually in the evening.
Two initiatives in progress are setting up a Friends of Wendover Library scheme, and introducing a scheme through which disabled members of the community will be able to have easier access to the Library.
Those who serve on the Community Library Committee, and the staff of the community library, (both paid and volunteer staff), are conscious of the important part a Community Library can, and should, play in the life of a village such as Wendover. We are grateful for the support and encouragement we have received from the Buckinghamshire Library Service and from our local community.

Wendover Cricket Club Wendover Cricket Club are now planning their activities for the winter and next season. Sports halls have been booked from the end of February to early April 2014 for seniors and juniors and details will be published in a future edition. Some managers and helpers will be undertaking coaching courses in the New Year; umpires courses are also available and the Mid Bucks League may run a shorter course lasting 3 sessions. Wendover Football Club The club has seen some new faces this season, with contributions from newcomers Dan Johnson and Dan Jones, Jamie Spurden and goalkeeper Scott Thompson. The club socials ahead of Christmas should be beneficial for team bonding before the run of fixtures commencing in the new year. There will hopefully be several players returning from injury in January that should give the second team manager Andy Hayers a few more options on a weekly basis.

Wendover Junior Squash Wendover Squash Club has seen an increase in Junior Membership recently. We have a comprehensive coaching schedule along with an internal Junior Squash League. The Junior section is now thriving and after the team was promoted to Division 2 in the Bucks League at the end of last season, combined with the increase in Junior Membership, we have been able to enter a second team into Division 3. This Year Wendover had 8 Juniors that were selected for the Bucks

Riding for the Disabled The Aylesbury and Wendover Riding for the Disabled Group is well settled in its new home in Weston Turville. We are able to provide riding lessons for up to 9 disabled children each week. We now have a waiting list of pupils and, in order to accommodate them, we urgently need more helpers. Get Wendover Cycling GWC has provided vital support for the provision of the two cycle paths along Aylesbury Road and Manor Road. The Group also has good connections with the local authority and is currently hopeful of securing funding for some of the seven extensions which they have identified as necessary to complete the existing network of dedicated cycleways in the locality. John Colet Student Attends Sacred Soil Ceremony A John Colet student visited Ypres on 11 November as part of the “Sacred Soil Garden Ceremony” to commemorate World War 1. Lewis Clarke, Teacher of Humanities, accompanied Caolan Roche-Davidson (14) to take part in the ceremony, which took place under the Menin Gate.
The project brought together soil samples from 70 Belgian cemeteries for a special ceremony at the Menin Gate on 11
November. Caolan, along with a Belgian student, carried one of the bags containing the soil during the ceremony and handed it over to soldiers who will then transport the soil to London to create a memorial garden. HRH Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Laurent from Belgium attended the ceremony.
The John Colet's involvement in this ceremony was a result of Mr Clarke registering an interest in the Centenary Celebrations of the First World War.

The Snow Patrol We just want to thank all concerned for the prompt resolution of the issue regarding the salt bins for use on the road up to Princess Mary Gate. In particular, a big thank you to Chris Adams, our County Councillor, who after a couple of days had managed to get SIX grit bins for use by the residents. Chris has also agreed to try to resolve the issue of the clearing of the road by the snow plough in the event of heavy snow. Thanks also to Robert Duggan and all the Parish Councillors for their help and support. Great work, thank you.

I'm an Olliff, and we have roots in Wendover, Wendover Dean, and the Missendens. I'm trying in particular to trace the sale of Dutchlands Farm, which was owned in the 19th Century by James Olliff, and of another James Olliff listed at Wendover Dean (farmer 270 acres) - both listed in the 1851 census. Father Wayne Coughlin celebrated his inaugural Mass as Parish Priest in St Anne’s Roman Catholic Church on 31 October during which he made his Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity. He read to the joint congregation at the Churches Together in Wendover Annual Memorial Service in St Mary’s Church on the first Sunday in November. He then attended the Remembrance Parade on the Manor Waste the Sunday afterwards. He has plunged himself into parish life from his first moments among us. Father Wayne is already getting to know his parishioners and is looking forward very much to his first Christmas in Wendover. Father Wayne was born and brought up in Cardiff. Despite his Welsh upbringing, he is not likely to be popping back to the Millennium Stadium during the season. He’s more likely to be enjoying a film at the cinema, a regular haunt. Father Wayne’s training for the priesthood took him initially to St Alban’s College, Valladolid, Spain. The Valladolid Holy Week celebrations were declared Fiesta of International Tourist Interest of Spain in 1981 and for the most part, only local people can participate. However, students of St Alban’s College, who are
predominantly of English and Welsh origin, are an integral part of the celebration and in the procession carry the damaged statue of our Lady Vulnerata, brought to the college in 1600. After a year in Valladolid, Father Wayne’s training continued at St Mary’s College (Oscott), Sutton Coldfield. Here he became familiar with the practice of blessing graves during the month of November. The student priests accompany families visiting graves to light candles in a ceremony familiar in Catholic Europe but no longer widely practiced in England. Hundreds of people attend each year and their appreciation is palpable. His most poignant memory of Oscott is of fellow seminarian Ben Grist who was ordained deacon and priest on 30 June 2012 as he had been diagnosed with aggressive cancer from which he died on 14 October 2012. Father Ben Grist is now an inspiration to all he met during his illness. From his hospital bed he exercised his priestly ministry with grace and humour. Father Wayne’s first posting was to Our Lady of Charity and Saint Augustine’s
Roman Catholic Church in Daventry as Assistant Priest. He was very struck by the persistence of the influence of the Sacred Hearts Fathers, who served the parish until 2000/2001. They were particularly concerned with Social Justice issues and to this day the parish still distributes food
parcels and Tesco vouchers from the presbytery. He is fascinated to have arrived in a Parish which has also been heavily influenced by the Sacred Hearts Fathers, who only left this area in 1995.
Within a day of arriving in Wendover, Father Wayne had to comfort the family of well known parishioner, Cathy Brackley. He celebrated her Requiem Mass on Saturday 9 November, the day before she would have laid the wreath for the Royal British Legion for whom she was Life President. This gave Father Wayne the opportunity to meet more Wendover folk.
Father Wayne has three aims for his work in this parish: 1. Celebration of the Sacraments 2. Preaching the word of Christ 3. Pastoral care of the people of the
parish and hence getting to know the community

View from the Chair Prompt action and co-operation between WPC, Bucks CC and Cllr Adams has ensured that some badly needed grit bins will be installed at Wood Lane, Princess Mary Gate, this winter. Also many thanks to County Councillor Adams for offering his Speedwatch equipment and jetwash. The latter, if suitable, will enable the Groundsman to clean unsightly graffiti off the London Road railway bridge.
Well done to the Girl Guides who raised a sum of £105 for the Clock Tower Fund. The presentation was made at our November meeting. I had the privilege, with Cllr Carroll, of attending the Greek play in the Guide Hut in October and was entertained by an unforgettable performance. It was brilliant.
The Village Quiz continues apace with Question Master Alan Myers doing his bit to keep the intellect of Wendover at the minimum required level. The Parish Lads were knocked out in the first round but as I write the Parish Lasses continue in the competition (I’m sure the questions were easier for the Lasses than they were for the Lads!)
Good news on Public Access Defibrillators (PADs). The South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust have managed to provide and match the defibrillator we have already funded. This means we will shortly have two PADs for Wendover which is truly good news.
Finally, I look forward to our continuing co-operation with the Chamber of Trade. I trust you will enjoy our joint Christmas Event on Wednesday 4 December. Thanks are very much due to the WPC team, Yvonne Bone and her Chamber colleagues who do so much to keep Wendover such a vibrant place to be part of.

Clock Tower Donation ....and our thanks for another donation, Wendover Financial Ltd have given £500 to the restoration fund, making the current total £8335.77.
Old Fly Posting We have received a letter from a lady resident who states the feelings of the Council. She says - As I walk around Wendover I am upset by the numerous out of date (often by several months) notices that have been put up to advertise events and never removed.
Would it be possible to put out an appeal asking the organisers to make sure that they remove their advertising after the date of the event? I am sure that, like myself, most people are happy for local events to be advertised by attaching flyers to fences, trees, lamp posts etc., but when these are not removed they just become unsightly and effectively rubbish.
Examples I have seen today (24 Oct) are 2 notices on the park railings (opposite the police station) advertising an event in Aylesbury town centre in August and one along Heron Path advertising a fun day on the cricket ground also in August.
Please be aware that putting up advertising and publicity on buildings or street furniture without the consent of the owner can also result in a £75 fine.
Christmas Tree To improve on last year’s display, efforts are being made to make a strong, secure base fixing for the tree and extra lights have been purchased to give a more stunning effect, especially as this year it will be the Florence Nightingale Tree of Light.
Carols Round the Christmas Tree Every year the Parish Council organises Carols Round the Tree so that young and old can come together and enjoy some singing. The time is always 6.15pm and this year the date is Friday 20 December. Ellesborough silver band will accompany this gentle community event.
Football on the Industrial Estate The Police have told us of a group of young people who are playing football on the Industrial Estate near the Station. There is great concern as they have been seen climbing the fence to get the ball back from the railway lines. This is extremely dangerous and we would ask that if anyone knows any of these youngsters they would pass on a warning of the danger and ideally find another place to play – any offers!?
