Joy to the world: Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

The tree is decorated, the evergreens are hung and Santa is on his way. The stage is set for the annual event.

November 20, 2012 -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today the approval of Flucelvax, the first seasonal influenza vaccine licensed in the United States produced using cultured animal cells, instead of fertilized chicken eggs. Flucelvax is approved to prevent seasonal influenza in people ages 18 years and older.

The manufacturing process for Flucelvax is similar to the egg-based production method, but a significant difference is that the virus strains included in the vaccine are grown in animal cells of mammalian origin instead of in eggs. Cell culture technology has already been in use for several decades to produce other U.S. licensed vaccines.

“Today’s approval represents the culmination of efforts to develop a seasonal influenza vaccine using cell culture as an alternative to the egg-based process,” said Karen Midthun, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.

Cell culture technology is another manufacturing alternative to conventional egg-based influenza vaccine production. Advantages of cell culture technology include the ability to maintain an adequate supply of readily available, previously tested and characterized cells for use in vaccine production and the potential

for a faster start-up of the vaccine manufacturing process in the event of a pandemic.

Flucelvax was evaluated in a randomized controlled clinical study conducted in the United States and Europe that involved about 7,700 people ages 18 to 49 years who received either Flucelvax or a placebo. The study showed that Flucelvax was 83.8 percent effective in preventing influenza when compared to placebo. The use of Flucelvax in people older than 49 is supported by antibody responses in about 1,700 adults which showed it to be comparable to Agriflu, an egg-based seasonal influenza vaccine approved by FDA for use in people 18 years and older.

The safety evaluation included about 6,700 individuals who received Flucelvax in controlled clinical studies. Injection site and general reactions to Flucelvax were typical of those seen with current influenza vaccines. Pain, redness and soreness at the injection site and headache and fatigue were the most common reactions.

Getting vaccinated each year remains one of the best ways to prevent seasonal influenza. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older receive an annual influenza vaccine.source: drug.com

The latest U.S. drug sales data has been released by Drugs.com. As in the previous quarter, proton-pump inhibitors, antipsychotics and statins remain in the top-selling therapeutic categories. Merck’s asthma and allergy preventive Singulair predictably drops out of the top five drugs due to Q3 patent loss. Study forecasts steady generics growth through 2023The global market for generic drugs will reach more than $125 billion next year, according to a new report by a British market-research firm.

Visiongane released its report, Generic Drugs: World Market 2013-2023, showing that the size of the market would increase to $127.8 billion from 2011's $110.8 billion. Sales of generics in the United States represent more than 40% of worldwide sales and account for about 70% of prescriptions dispensed within the country, while sales here have more than tripled since 2000, according to the report. The report included the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, India and China.

"A number of factors have contributed to the growth of the world generics market," Visiongain senior pharmaceutical industry analyst Syed Ahmed said. "Prominent blockbuster drugs will lose patent protection in the next few years, with many having done so already."

Ahmed said branded drug manufacturers were set to lose more than $50 billion in sales next year to patent expiries, and the report predicts steady growth in the overall generics market through 2023.source: drugstorenews.com

QS/1, COVERMYMEDS PARTNER ON PRIOR AUTHORIZATION AUTOMATION

Companies hope to speed up process for specialty drugsDECEMBER 4, 2012 | BY ALARIC DEARMENT- DSNSPARTANBURG, S.C. – Pharmacy technology provider QS/1 has entered a contract with CoverMyMeds to automate a process often required by insurers to dispense specialty drugs.

QS/1 said it entered a partnership with CoverMyMeds to automate the prior-authorization process, required for 90% of specialty drugs on the market.

"A pharmacist can spend a lot of time cutting through the red tape to get these prescriptions filled," QS/1 pharmacy market analyst John Frady said. "CoverMyMeds helps cut down on that work load by automating the process."

CoverMyMeds allows physicians and pharmacists complete prior authorization and other insurance coverage determination forms for any drug and most drug plans, developing online and phone-based systems that make the process faster and easier.

"The best thing about this plan is, it doesn't cost the pharmacies a penny to use," Frady said.

At least 170,000 cancers a year are linked to indoor tanning beds. These cancers include basal-cell carcinoma and squamous-cell carcinoma, skin cancers that aren't usually life-threatening.

People who have used indoor tanning are 29 percent more likely to develop basal-cell carcinomas. Those who started tanning before age 25 have the highest risk, according to an analysis of 12 studies done in six countries.

Other research links indoor tanning with malignant melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer.

People using indoor tanning are 67 percent more likely to develop more serious squamous-cell carcinomas, say dermatologists at the University of California-San Francisco.

AFTER CHRISTMAS DINNER, A HEALTHY WALK COMPLETES THE DAY, AND IT'S FUN

Christmas morning is exciting and traditionally it goes like this: First the presents: the kids will let nothing stand in the way of their march to the Christmas tree. After everyone has a light breakfast, comes the second-most exciting event of the day ... Christmas dinner.

For some families, taking a walk half an hour to an hour after dinner is traditional. The walk is healthy fun for adults, kids and the family dog.

It can be a leisurely walk or a brisk walk, whatever your group enjoys. An old saying is, "Walk a hundred steps after dinner and you'll live to be 99." Actually, to increase longevity, studies say you need to walk a little more than that, but not a whole lot more.

Walking for 10 minutes on Christmas and other days, can change your body weight, lower your cholesterol and decrease your risk of stroke and other serious diseases. People who benefit most from 10-minute walks are those who normally don't exercise at all.

For them, the 10-minute idea generates something of a can-do attitude. While prevailing advice calls for a 30-minute walk on most days, if you're a non-exerciser, that can be intimidating.

The nice thing about a 10-minute walk is that as you learn to enjoy it, the time could morph into 12 or 15 minutes or more. Every minute increases the benefits.

If you reach the recommended 30-minute level, you will also enjoy lower blood pressure and increased cognitive function. Your brain will work better, just as the rest of your body will.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say walking is almost the perfect physical activity.

December 6 is celebrated every year as National Mitten Tree Day. It's based on a 1997 children's picture book by Candace Christiansen, The Mitten Tree. It's still a favorite of children, their mothers, grandmothers and teachers.

The story tells of a lonely old woman, Sarah, whose children have all grown. One snowy day, she watches local kids gather at the bus stop. One young boy doesn't have mittens. She knits him a pair that night and places them on a nearby tree for him to discover.

She continues to knit mittens anonymously and leaves them on the tree for any other children without them. It becomes a game; the children look for new mittens on the mystifying tree every morning, and Sarah happily knits new ones each night until she uses up all her colorful yarn.

The miracle of The Mitten Tree comes when Sarah's gift is returned to her; a basketful of new colored yarn balls appears mysteriously on her doorstep.

This story teaches kindness and compassion and giving with no need for recogni-tion or praise. It has been adopted by many teachers for school projects. Some teachers have students create construction paper mittens to hang on classroom mitten trees, replacing them with real mittens donated by family and friends for children in need.

A mitten tree idea is used by many companies and church groups. One art therapy class made one of twigs and draped paper mittens on it, with the goal of replacing them with real mittens, gloves, hats and scarves, all hand knit by vari-

ous members.

Another woman, who calls herself "a mitten lady," knits them all year round to give to children's organizations during the month of December.

The lovely world where mittens grow on trees

Christmas is celebrated by 95 percent of Americans, regardless of whether or not they are Christians (80 percent are).

But even non-Christians can enjoy the non-religious aspects of the holiday. They may include putting up a decorated tree, hanging lights, exchanging gifts, having parties and even having visits from Santa Claus. Many celebrants focus on taking time for reflection or on reaching out with gifts for the needy people.

There is a Jewish tradition in major cities that calls for extended families to enjoy an elaborate Chinese dinner at a favorite ethnic restaurant, since most Chinese restaurants remain open on Christmas Day. After dinner, they see a movie.

In New York, another tradition has grown annually . . . walking tours of areas of the city. Many native New Yorkers, as well as foreign visitors, join the groups, which can number in the hundreds.

CHRISTMAS DAY FOR NON-CHRISTIANSFor Muslims, atheists, non-celebrating families of mixed ethnic backgrounds and Jewish people, it's a time to exchange holiday work schedules with Christian colleagues. Swapping a day or two is appreciated by those working in places that never shut down, like hospitals, fire and police departments, 24/7 gas stations and emergency clinics. Others who don't celebrate Christmas just enjoy having a day to be at home with family.

Some volunteer at nursing and retirement homes, which may be short-staffed, or work with a local organization that visits shut-ins, who are lonely over the holiday. Still others have started the tradition of helping with Christmas dinner at the Salvation Army or shelters for the homeless. They believe joy comes from doing for others.

Outdoorsy non-Christians may combine a walking or hiking adventure with family and friends, or a winter sledding or skating party with a fireside punch and buffet party.

Effective January 7th, 2013, Ham-acher Zone Pricing will change from an AWP based pricing system to a cost based system. The trend for all pricing strategies has moved to a cost based and away from the old days of AWP. The new way of pricing with cost will allow for a more accurate pricing system for your OTC and HBC items.

With this change you may see some slight changes in retail prices, but they should be minimal. Smith chose to be proactive and move to this as Hamacher has announced that they will be eliminating the AWP based pricing in the near fu-ture. We felt it would be in the best interest of our customers to make this change so your pharmacy will be properly priced going forward.

Our goal and Hamacher’s goal is to make this an easy and seamless transition. There may be more price updates initially but should smooth out in a reasonable amount of time. If you are not on Hamacher’s Zone pricing, we encourage you to do so as it’s difficult to have a competitive and fair pricing strategy without it. Please ask your Territory Account Manager about how you can be en-rolled in the program devised by the category and pricing strategy leader in our industry.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - By Tacoma Perry, FOX 5 reporter A Lawrenceville mother turned her son’s stressful medical condition into a successful business. Using her own recipe, she cooked up a cure for her son’s skin symptoms.

Anita Redd’s middle son is now a teen, but she says she’ll never forget the day he was born.

“He was born in my arms and his skin was flaying off of his lower body,” said Redd.

Doctors told her it was an incurable genetic condition, eczema. It’s is a skin condition that causes symptoms like flaking, redness, itching, dryness and in some extreme cases - bleeding.

Redd says doctors tried everything from steroids to cream. She worried about the effects it would have on her son and thought there had to be a better way to treat his condition.

She did her research and looked into natural skin conditioners. She came up with olive oil and beeswax.

“My very first container that I made for him was in his dad’s roll-on deodorant, Mennen stick. I melted beeswax and added olive oil until it got to be just the right consistency,” said Redd.

It worked and Anita’s Balm was born. But Redd says she didn’t consider it a business until she heard similar skin stories from others in her parents’ group. She’s now making it for others and delivering it.

A year later, tens of thousands of Anita’s Balm products have been sold and they’re in stores across the nation, including Return to Eden in Atlanta. Redd says she enjoys success, but helping families get through a stressful condition is her reward.www.myfoxatlanta.com/

Take time to get a flu vaccine.

CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. While there are many different flu viruses, a flu vaccine protects against the three viruses that research suggests will be most common. (See upcoming season’s Vaccine Virus Selection for this season’s vaccine composition.)Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine as soon as the current season's vaccines are available.Vaccination of high risk persons is especially important to decrease their risk of severe flu illness.People at high risk of serious flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older.Vaccination also is important for health care workers, and other people who live with or care for high risk people to keep from spreading flu to high risk people.Children younger than 6 months are at high risk of serious flu illness, but are too young to be vaccinated. People who care for them should be vaccinated instead.

Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.Try to avoid close contact with sick people. If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.See Everyday Preventive Actions [257 KB, 2 pages] and Non pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) for more information about actions, apart from getting vaccinated and taking medicine, that people and communities can take to help slow the spread of illnesses like influenza (flu).

Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.

If you get the flu, antiviral drugs can treat your illness.Antiviral drugs are different from antibiotics. They are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaled powder) and are not available over-the-counter.Antiviral drugs can make illness milder and shorten the time you are sick. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For people with high risk factors [702 KB, 2 pages], treatment with an antiviral drug can mean the difference between having a milder illness versus a very serious illness that could result in a hospital stay.Studies show that flu antiviral drugs work best for treatment when they are started within 2 days of getting sick, but starting them later can still be helpful, especially if the sick person has a high-risk health or is very sick from the flu. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking this drug.Flu-like symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people also may have vomiting and diarrhea. People may be infected with the flu, and have respiratory symptoms without a fever.

CDC Says “Take 3” Actions To Fight The FluFlu is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death.

CDC urges you to take the following actions to protect yourself and others from influenza (the flu):

1. 2. 3.
