Dear Abiding Savior
Faith Family,
ADVENT – a coming into place, view,
or being; arrival.
Thanks dictionary.com! Some-
thing is coming. I have seen its
influence already at my favorite
hardware stores and in the local
retail stores’ garden centers for
what seems like well over a
month now. Even the hallowed
Halloween’s market share
seems to be more and more
pushed out by the coming of
this economic earthquake.
Something is coming!
It’s not just the retail environ-
ment that feels this Goliath’s
gravitational pull though. I
have already witnessed within
my own life and within my fam-
ily’s life a heightened awareness
of the December schedule, lists
are being made as we speak,
trees must be found, cookies
must be decorated, halls must be
decked, and ―ho-ho-ho’s‖ will
be distributed in the mall by a
red suited man wearing a jolly
personality – at least as long as
the pay and the children in line
are good.
Something is coming!
And it’s about this time of year
that the ―naughty and nice‖ list
pries children’s personalities to
be better than usual. Something
is coming! Are you ready? We
have already heard the spending
forecasts, we have already seen
the catalogues, and we have al-
ready started the event plan-
ning. Are we ready? Are you
ready for ―it‖ to come? The
―Christmas season‖ – or generi-
cally speaking – the ―Holiday
Season‖ – is upon us, ready or
not. I’ve already mentioned just
the tip of this massive iceberg’s
incredible influence upon most
people’s lives. However, what I
remember most of the Christ-
mas season’s influence upon my
past life is the wake it leaves
behind after all the jovial chaos.
Credit card limits breached …
sanity limits breached.
Something is coming! Are you ready?
The church, though, is meant to
offer a different focus. See, the
church doesn’t say ―Something
is coming,‖ but rather,
“SOMEONE is coming.”
And although that is just a few
letters’ difference grammatical-
ly, it’s a world of difference in
reality.
Someone is coming promised
from long ago.
Someone is coming to ease our
chaos and grant us a more con-
tented peace.
Someone is coming that is the
greatest gift the world has or
will ever know.
Someone is coming and He is
the Savior. He is Christ the
LORD!
Dear ones, are you ready not just
for Christmas… but for Christ?
Are you preparing yourself for
the incredible fulfillment and
focus that meet in the babe in
Bethlehem’s manger?
Are you ready for
SOMEONE to come?
Let us help. The season of Ad-
vent in the church is a time to
prepare our hearts and lives for
the coming of the Christ – the
Savior of the whole world. And
His coming is less lip-service
than real life change. This Ad-
vent we will be talking about
The Songs of Advent. Check out
the Wednesday Advent services
that will start November 30th at
7pm and continue on December
7th and December 14th – leading
to the real celebration of the sea-
son - December 24th and 25th –
the birth of our blessed Savior.
These along with personal and
public ministry opportunities and
Saturday and Sunday worship
services will go a long way to
making sure that you are really
ready for someone to come.
Are you ready?
To God be the glory for His gift
of grace in the Savior Jesus!
See you in Advent.
Serving our Savior
and His people with you,
Pastor Jason

Our Mission:
To Know Christ to Make Him Known 3
4 To Know Christ to Make Him Known
United By The WordUnited By The Word
In January, 2011, Abiding Savior Lutheran Church began an exciting project to read through the Bible in 2 years! We pray that you and your family put participation in this project at the top of your to do list for the year!
The project is called United By The Word and it provides a structured approach
to reading the Bible that meets the following goals:
Provides daily readings that cover the entire Bible in two years. Covers the Old Testament once and the Psalms and the New Testament twice in two years. Provides a varied program that doesn't require reading the Bible sequentially from front to back. Provides two 5 to 10 minute readings per day. These two readings can be used in several ways by
both individuals and families. Provides opportunities for coordination with a sermon series or a Bible study. Provides opportunities for in-depth study using a respected commentary.
The reading schedule is based on one that was developed by a Scottish minister, Robert M'Cheyne. Alt-hough Pastor M'Cheyne lived in the early 1800's and for only 30 years, his surviving works continue to have a great influence on the Christian church. He is perhaps best known for his deep concern that Chris-tians read their Bibles. The commentary that is available to accompany the program is For the Love of God, in two volumes, written by D.A.Carson, and available from Crossway Books. Look for weekly reading schedules in the bulletin, monthly schedules in the newsletter, and bookmark handouts available at church every four weeks. Tips and suggestions for using the reading schedule will be along with the bookmark handouts, and look for an announcement early next year of internet access to the reading schedule and a way for you to share your thoughts and comments on the readings with other participants.
God bless your
Bible reading time!

Early Childhood Ministry DECEMBER 2011 NEWS
Bev Gruenwald: Director
To Know Christ to Make Him Known 11
Mission Projects: In November, our students and their families shared boxes of cereal with Otis Woodard’s North St. Louis Outreach. In December we are collecting hats and mittens to share warmth and love with children in need. On December 9, the Pre-Kindergarten students will sing carols at Orchid Terrace.
Christmas cheer and a big thank-you to all who helped support the growth of our program by purchasing poinsettias. We hope they are a beautiful part of your holiday decorating at home and here at ASLC!
A lovely mural of Jesus with children has been painted in the Children’s Day Out room. We thank God for the talent and dedication of artist Kathy Evers. Kathy serves on our Children’s Day Out staff.

NEWS-DECEMBER 2011
This is a very real obstacle and one of the most common paren-tal concerns in choosing a pri-vate education. Christian schools cost money…. a lot of your hard-earned money. However, before we get too car-ried away with concerns re-garding financial barriers, we need to ask ourselves an im-portant question: Is God calling me to give my child a Christian education? Seek this answer through prayer. If so, then God will do for us what He does anytime He gives us a command. Deuteronomy 6 tells parents that, in all they do, they should provide a godly education. Christian schools exist to assist parents with this responsibility. God gives us the means to follow His will. He may give you a raise. He may show you how to cut a few corners. God has promised to supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Chris-tian education almost always
involves sacrifice for families, but it is also an excellent invest-ment for your children. Take an honest and careful look at your finances. Can you make some adjustments to how you spend money? A few less con-venience store purchases? Bun-dling utility services? Only basic features on your phone? Remembering that all of your money is actually God’s money (He owns it and you are just the manager), pray to God to help you know if you are spending His money in a way that honors Him. Look to see if you are spending money on things that only bring you short-term pleas-ure rather than things of eternal value. Ask yourself; If you have placed less important things above the awesome God or-dained task of educating your children the way God wants you to rear them. Remember the words from Jesus in Mat-thew 6:33: “Seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live right-eously, and he will give you every-thing you need.”
If you review your situation and simply can’t afford it, and you can’t make any changes to your personal budget/spending habits, pray that God will make a way. Abiding Sav-ior does offer financial aid to qualified applicants. Infor-mation is available from the school office and applications are due by April 1st. Please speak to Principal Montgomery if you have questions.

Christmas Giving Tree 2011 benefiting:
Mission Gate With this year’s Giving Tree opportunity, we are again partnering with Mission Gate Prison Ministry out of Chesterfield, MO (636-391-8832; www.missiongateministry.org). This ministry seeks to bless children who desperately need to see and feel the love of Jesus Christ in their lives – the children of prison inmates and ex-offenders. Their Christmas program for children, the Mission Gate Christmas Angel Mission, is the specific program we are targeting through our giving.
Their Christmas ministry serves the children whose parents are incarcerated in MoDOC and Coun-ty jails. The children are invited to Christmas parties where volunteers hand out the gifts collected, share the love of Jesus Christ and the Gospel message, and have fellowship and fun with these precious ―little angels.‖
HOW CAN YOU BE INVOLVED AND HELP THIS MINISTRY?
The steps to complete are as follows:
1. Select and take a red (for boys) and/or green (for girls) angel ornament from the Giving Tree located in the church atrium (in the corner).
2. Please purchase a $15.00 gift for a boy and/or girl, for the age listed on the ornament.
The gender and age of each child is provided on each ornament.
3. Wrap the gift in Christmas wrapping paper.
4. Tape the angel ornament to the top of the wrapped gift.
5. Return the wrapped gift (with the angel ornament taped to it) to Abiding Savior Lutheran
Church by no later than Sunday, December 11, 2011. Place in the tote located under
the Giving Tree in the atrium (in the corner).
On Friday, Dec. 16, the gifts collected will be taken to Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis, and they will be handed out to children on Saturday, Dec. 17
th and Monday, Dec. 19
th.
You can also volunteer to help with gift wrapping and other important tasks for the ministry’s Christmas parties. A flyer of information about the ministry and other volunteer opportunities can be found next to the Giving Tree in the church/school atrium.
GIFT SUGGESTIONS? Mission Gate recommends age-appropriate toys and books for the children, possibly clothes. For teenagers, they suggest gift cards, blankets for their beds, purses, etc.
PLEASE NOTE - if you purchase clothes, please indicate “Clothes” on the top of the wrapped gift you return.
Please prayerfully consider being a part of this wonderful opportunity to share the love of Jesus Christ with these innocent children who are living such
confused and strained lives.
