Families prepare for Christmasin many different ways. One
family, of whom I’ve heard, useslarge plywood letters that are illu-minated by lights on the roof oftheir house. The letters spell,“Noel.” As it often happens in therush of things time was runningout in trying to get the sign up onthe roof. Near to the last day thefather was sure he would get thejob done. It was a cold and blusteryday and the plywood letters werebig and awkward. Fighting thewind and trying to get the lettersin place, the father up on the roofyelled down, “All right, it’s ready.Turn on the lights.” Every one wasexcited and ran out to see the lightson the roof. Surprise! Instead ofthe letters spelling “Noel,” thelights on the roof spelled, “Leon.”
What a shock after all thatwork! Suddenly “Noel” became
“Leon.” It’s easy at Christmas toget things mixed up. We know whatChristmas is supposed to mean, but it’s easy to become embroiledwith ribbons, tinsel, lights and pre-sents so that at times we forgetChristmas means pure love, hope, cheer, peace and goodwill.
We need this season of activityand we enjoy it. This is a timewhen we need to hear the angelssing and to reflect on God’s love forus. Christmas tells us that theSavior of the world has been bornin Jesus Christ. All of us at timesget depressed. Christmas comes tolift our spirits out of the doldrumsand to set us before the wonder ofthat eternal mystery. That’s whywe sing, “Noel! Noel! The Lord iswith us.” So, may it be a MerryChristmas to one and all and alsoa Happy Hanukkah!
Please don’t fail to read DickSchmidt’s Road Runner article
on page 22. I wish to not only com-ment on how pleased I am thatNoble Dick has taken on the RoadRunner articles (this has been adesire of mine for years to havefrequent articles about them andDick is doing a really fine job,) Ialso want to praise this particulararticle. If ever you wondered howdifficult the task of our hospitaltransportation team is, this storywill fill you with pride and appre-ciation for the Road Runner team.If you feel as appreciative as I doabout Dick’s articles, please let himknow, send your thoughts andencouragement via email to:<[email protected]>.
Speaking of pride and appre-ciation—I was overwhelmed by thewonderful presentation of Lt. Com-mander Robert R. Littman USN,son of Art and Wendy Littman, at
the Annual Sahib “Tribute to OurVeterans.” Noble Art was also a Lt.Commander in the Navy, what aproud tradition for this great fam-ily! Lt. Commander ‘Rob’ made aprevious presentation here back inearly 2008 when he attended oneof our Thursday Shriners Lun-cheons with his dad, I decided toreprint the article we publishedabout Noble Rob (see page 44) toremind you of his skills and hero-ism. His stories during his recentpresentation at the tribute, justadded to that. Truly a fine youngman and a noble—he is a life-mem-ber of Boumi Shriners in Balti-more, Maryland. If the goal of our“Tribute to Our Veterans” is to fillthe audience with pride and pa-triotism, the program, the SahibConcert Band and this extraordi-nary presentation by Noble Robsure delivered!

Potentate’sNotes
Nobles,
‘Tis the season to be jolly...and jolly we are; almost at the end of theyear. This is our time for Christmas parties, get-togethers with fami-lies and friends to share our joy and goodwill towards all men. If onlywe could bottle up the feelings at Christmas time and release them allthrough the year, what a better place this earth would be.
This is also the time for important events at Sahib. One of the mostimportant is our election this month for officers of a new Divan for thecoming year. Please be sure to vote—it is your right and duty as aSahib noble. Please remember all the men who gave their lives so thatwe continue to have the right to vote. Remember also those who havedone their job at Sahib, as well as those who haven’t. Vote for the goodof the Shrine.
Remember all our Brothers who have gone to their final resting placethis year, those who have touched our lives only briefly, and remem-ber all the good they have done.
If you have not seen a Brother for a while, give him a call; you’ll bothfeel better for doing so.
Lady Kaye and I wish you all the merriest of Christmases, and wishyou the best of health in the coming New Year. God bless our frater-nity, and God bless America.
Yours in the Faith,
Tom Millaway, Potentate

Recorder’s notesby Oscar Cloutier, [email protected]
Assistant Rabban’s notesby Bill Zurlo, [email protected]
Chief Rabban’s notesby Charles M. Levan, 33°, [email protected]
December is a month of joy and celebration. It isalso one of the most important months for Sahib
Shriners. This month we elect the future leaders ofour Shrine. This is a decision that should not be takenlightly or ignored. It is important that every nobleattend the stated meeting on December 7 and cast hisballot.
Assistant Rabban William Zurlo has graciouslyaccepted the position of membership chairman for
the coming year. His team of nobles will work dili-gently to reverse the trend from losing membership togaining membership, but the team cannot do it with-out every noble’s cooperation and assistance. Whenasked to help, please say yes.
Money Mania has not been as successful as itshould have been. Any suggestions for fundraiserswill be greatly appreciated.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
First Ceremonial Master Carroll Scribner and Iattended the fall membership classes in Tampa
run by Shriners International from October 13 -15.Many of the programs recommended by our instruc-
tors are currently in use at Sahib or have been used inthe past. For increasing membership, the followingchairmanships are set up and currently in use by Sahib:
Recruitment: First Ceremonial Master CarrollScribner
Retention: Richard MenzakRestoration: Past Potentate and Current
Treasurer Dale LaBellVirtual Mentor:Robert PedersenChairman: Asst. Rabban Bill Zurlo
The following items for collection of dues are cur-rently being used by Sahib: Dues payment by creditcard and through electronic means using the link inthe weekly newsletter.
We also formed an Angel Fund for nobles in dis-tress, used after proper investigation.
As an aside, the instructors did recommend thattemples use two ceremonials per year as we havedone for many years.
The Shriners International wants the followingfrom the membership committees and the nobility:
Commitment, Empowerment and Accountability. They have set up local officers called Membership
Development Specialists (MDS,) who in our case isPast Potentate and Recorder Oscar Cloutier. I asmembership chairman must submit a monthly writ-ten report on our progress.
Another tool given us by International isShrinersvillage.com and beashrinernow.com whichcontain a great deal of information on membership.Scroll through the information provided and famil-iarize yourself with the various systems involved.
Another suggestion put forward was to have ourmentor chairman select candidate mentors ahead ofceremonials and instruct them as to their responsi-bilities. These new candidate mentors will be as-signed to the candidates to acquaint them with ourtemple and the mentors themselves.
In discussing membership with Oscar, he informedme that our temple was built through attractingassociate members. However, more recently we havebeen attempting to attract Blue Lodge Masons. Thelodges are raising Masons in considerable numbers, but we are not recruiting same.
We must all become aware of our need for in-creased membership and participate. This would re-solve many of our current problems such as moneyand leadership personnel. Go Sahib!
I want to wish all of you nobles a very MerryChristmas and a prosperous and exciting New
Year. Ill. Sir Tom Millaway and Lady Kaye led us allthrough 2011 with enthusiasm and fortitude. We allshould be thankful that Ill. Sir Tom was able to providethe necessary leadership despite his physical issues.
Chief Rabban Charles Levan has been workingwith his Chief Aide Bud Glidden, and planning 2012.He will organize the aides so that they become aproductive and active unit.
As in the past, managing our budget and member-ship will be Charles’ main focus.
With Assistant Rabban Bill Zurlo as MembershipChairman we will succeed. We all need to be assistinghim in order for Bill to reach his ultimate goals.
Thank you all for a successful year.
Change is inevitable, Growth is optional!

Sickness and distress: Sol Shuman is out of thehospital receiving therapy at home, and Chet Ray’sgrandchildren have moved him to New Mexico to becloser to them.
Now we’ll resume our monthly ‘Quotable Notable’contest with this December quiz – What founder of aninternational investment management firm wroteearlier this year, “Washington hassles over debt ceil-ings instead of job creation in the mistaken beliefthat a balance budget will produce a balancedeconomy. It will not.
The president and Congress must recognize thatan AA-plus country, to remain AA-plus, must focus ongrowth, not debt reduction in the short term. We havea debt problem, but primarily a crisis of aggregateddemand. A 21st-century Keynes would have recog-nized this and sounded the alarm, pointing out thatpolicymakers from a fiscal perspective are pointingus toward recession and the destructive 1930s in-stead of a low-growth but still breathing U.S. economyof the 21st century.”
The first non-club member to e-mail this notable’sidentity to the scribe at the above address wins a freeTuesday morning breakfast for two with the NorthPort Shrine Club.
We welcome back all the snowbirds, and lookforward to your participation.
Thanks to the combined efforts of the North PortShrine Club and the Venice Shrine Club, anOktoberfest picnic dinner was provided at the AgBuilding; Chef Sam Cohen and Chef Jack Watsonoutdid themselves.
The Christmas Party consisting of the ShrineClubs from North Port, Englewood and Venice will be
held at the Heron Creek Golf & Country Club, 5304Heron Creek Blvd, North Port on December 4 at 5:00p.m. cocktails, 6:00 p.m. dinner. $30.00 pp checks tobe made out to North Port Shrine Club and mailed toRon Morrison, 856 Rosedale Rd., Venice, FL 34293For food choices, call Jim Jensen 739-9324.

Marinersby C. Bud Glidden, Commodore, [email protected]
December greetings to all Mariners and theirmates, another busy month has come and gone
and busy it was. The Mariners Vice CommodoreFrank Metheny conducted the meeting in my place onWednesday the 12th while I was in Denver on (mon-key) business. And from the reports I heard did asuper job. Thanks, Frank.
Thanks also go to Rear Commodore Mel Collins,Past Commodore Dick Hines, Past Commodore PaulBekkenhuis, Past Commodore Cub Dickerson, fortheir participation in the Venice Sun Fiesta ParadeSaturday, October 15. Past Commodore Paul alsoneeds to be thanked; or rather, it is his wife Andreawho needs the thanks for hosting a hotdog and ham-burger cookout at their place in Venice; while Paulwas up in Tampa pretending to be Frankie Laine withthe barbershop group. A great time was had by all.Speaking of Paul, as the newest Past Commodore itwas his responsibility to run this year’s Past Commo-dores’ Picnic at Lakewood ranch on Sunday, Octo-ber 30.
I am always saddened when someone resigns froma position in the Mariners due to health problems. This has been the case of our beloved Chaplain PaulTobias who is having great difficulty in moving aroundwithout it causing strain in his breathing. His wit ingiving the invocation before the Mariners supperswill be missed. He always kidded me that he wasgoing to give it in Yiddish and I always waited for himto do it. But, Paul being Paul, would give it in En-glish. I along with all of the Mariners wish him a
speedy recovery and so does Rae, as he is driving hercrazy.
The Commodore’s Ball on October 22 was a rous-ing success and I, as Commodore, was truly honoredand almost speechless. You notice I said almost. Itwas truly an evening I will always remember andcherish by a group of friends that I admire the most. One hundred and eleven Mariners and their guestsshowed up for this annual event and was I ever proudthat my granddaughter Jennifer Chadwick and mystepdaughter Renee and her husband Brian camedown from Tampa to attend. All the way from FortMyers was another dear friend Dave Harris. WhereFrank ever dug up my bio, I will never know. But mydaughter in Nantucket has some explaining to do. Idon’t really pick up all the screws and nails I see whenI am out walking, just the straight ones. Truly, awonderful night and thanks are not enough for Frankand his crew and Sara and her helpers. They wereoutstanding. Cub did his magnificent job as emcee.Without my super Bridge and Past Commodores, Iwould be lost. Frank’s manipulation of a foreignobject to him like my (“Bosn’s” pipe) was one of thehighlights of the evening. He may yet become a sailor.
Thanks also go to our Assistant Fleet Captain JonNeary who took all of the pictures of Mariners andtheir mates dressed in their finery for the Commo-dores Ball.
Let us also plan for the Mariners Christmas partyat Marina Jacks on Wednesday night December 14with cash bar cocktails starting at 6:00 p.m. and

Ho, Ho, Ho everyone from the Model Ts. The SantaClaus, the American version of the Santa Claus
figure received its inspiration and its name from theDutch legend of Sinter Klaas, brought by settlers toNew York in the 17th century. As early as 1773, thename appeared in the American press as “St. A Claus,”but it was the popular author Washington Irving whogave Americans their first detailed information aboutthe Dutch version of Saint Nicholas. In his History ofNew York, published in 1809 under the pseudonymDiedrich Knickerbocker, Irving described the arrivalof the saint on horseback (unaccompanied by BlackPeter) each Eve of Saint Nicholas.
This Dutch-American Saint Nick achieved his fullyAmericanized form in 1823 in the poem A Visit fromSaint Nicholas more commonly known as The NightBefore Christmas by writer Clement Clarke Moore.Moore included such details as the names of thereindeer; San`ta Claus’s laughs, winks, and nods;and the method by which Saint Nicholas, referred toas an elf, returns up the chimney. (Moore’s phrase
“lays his finger aside of his nose” was drawn directlyfrom Irving’s 1809 description.)
The American image of Santa Claus was furtherelaborated by illustrator Thomas Nast, who depicteda rotund Santa for Christmas issues of Harper’smagazine from the 1860’s to the 1880s. Nast addedsuch details as Santa’s workshop at the North Poleand Santa’s list of the good and bad children of theworld. A human-sized version of Santa Claus, ratherthen the elf of Moore’s poem, was depicted in a seriesof illustrations for Coca-Cola advertisements intro-duced in 1931. In modern versions of the Santa Clauslegend, only his toyshop workers are elves. Rudolph, the ninth reindeer, with a red and shiny nose, wasinvented in 1939 by an advertising writer for theMontgomery Ward Company.

Roadrunnersby Dick Schmidt, [email protected]
The Transportation Unit was given the opportu-nity to test its mettle this past September and
October. This was a serious challenge to its skills andorganization.
The Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa hada patient that had a procedure that required continu-ing treatment on a seven-day-a-week basis. The se-quence of treatments cannot be interrupted. Thepatient lives in the town of Zolfo Springs in HardeeCounty. Daily transportation was required to andfrom the hospital. The medication he was receivinghad no shelf life and had to be prepared as used. In-patient treatment was not a practical or economicalchoice. The first treatment began on September 17and extended to the last treatment on October 28allowing 42 consecutive treatments.
The patient’s Zolfo Springs residence is approxi-mately 90 miles from the Tampa hospital and nomi-nally 57 miles from the Sahib temple. Round tripmileage averaged 294 miles and used about 18 gal-lons of regular fuel.
A timetable for the treatment needed to be estab-lished for consistency within a tolerance of plus orminus a half an hour. The application of the medicinerequired between an hour and a half and two hours.Using this criteria and the driving times Transporta-tion Chairman Ken Clark established a schedule of7:30 a.m. departure from Sahib, arrive at the ZolfoSprings residence by around 8:45 a.m., load the pa-tient and proceed to the Tampa hospital using two totwo and a half hours. Allowing for reasonable traffic
delays the routine became arrival at the hospitalbetween 10:30 and 11:00 a.m., back on the road againaround 1:00 p.m., back at Sahib by 4:00 or 4:15 p.m.with the tank topped off, and ready to go again.
The organizing of this project was a yeoman taskand handled expertly by Ken Clark. The 42 trips wereshared by the patient’s parents and the Sahib driv-ers. The parents drove the weekend days plus thefirst and last weekdays for a total of 14 trips. TheSahib drivers drove 28 trips. The TransportationUnit still had to provide services for its “regularcustomers.” The typical patient scheduling from theTampa hospital can be a much as two weeks inadvance or as little as one day notice. The ZolfoSprings project scheduling was the easiest as it wasconsistent every day with no exceptions. Overall, there were 55 trips in 30 working days that Ken hadto schedule drivers and determine which vehicle wasto be used. The Potentate had allowed Ken the vari-ance of using single drivers on the Zolfo Springsproject had driver availability become an issue.
The drivers and co-drivers for the Zolfo Springsproject furnished 55 volunteer man-days or 440 man-hours. These hours were because of the participationof 21 different Sahib noble drivers. The total vehiclemileage was 8,420 miles and we burned up 516 gal-lons of regular gas.
The Zolfo Springs project plus our “regular cus-tomers” could have experienced a complete fiasco hadit not been for the coordination and planning by the

Hello all, well, where did this year go? It didn’tseem that there was enough time to get every-
thing done. But, with a lot of hard work and the helpof many of our nobles, their wives, and family Sahibpulled off a few great events. I would like to take thisopportunity to thank all of the great people for all thehelp and guidance they have given me this past yearas High Priest and Prophet. This has been a veryexciting and learning year for me, if it wasn’t for theextra efforts from others this would have been adifficult year.
Now let’s get back to the fun things. We have beenthe most successful Shrine to support the East/WestShrine game in Florida. Because of the below averagecold weather last year, I was afraid the attendancethe next game would be doomed. But, thanks to themove to Tropicana Field in St. Pete, this will not be aproblem. I have been attending meetings at Interna-tional Headquarters in Tampa and it seems thatother Shrine temples are making big efforts to makea great showing at the game. We still will show themup, as there is a lot of excitement here at Sahib tomake this another fun event. There are four bussesreserved for the game and I challenge everyone to
make my job more difficult by making me have to findanother bus or two. This is a good opportunity toinvite a friend that’s not a Mason or a Shriner to cometo one of our events to see how much fun we have toraise money for our kids and our temples. Remember, you do not have to be a Shriner to attend thegame with us! Our game and bus trip is open toeveryone. Bring the family, a neighbor or friend, fellow workers, in-laws, or even give the bus packageas a holiday gift. Get it? I want to see everyone at thegame. Oriental Guide notesby Connie Jacobi, [email protected]
Wow, where has the year gone? Thanksgivingdinner at the Shrine was great! It seems just
like last week I was getting ready to have 2010Christmas with the family and our Shrine friends.
It has been a great year for me and I am very proudto be a member of the greatest Shrine in all NorthAmerica. Serving as your Oriental Guard has been aprivilege and I can only say “thanks” for entrustingthe job to me. Being on the Divan has been a great eyeopening experience. Working with such a great groupof Sahib nobles is a pleasure. We always strive tomake things better for “our Shrine and for our kids”.I have enjoyed being with the nobles of all the unitsand clubs who made me feel at home whenever I wasable to be with them.
The holiday parties will soon start and Lady Deanieand I want to wish each and everyone of you and yourfamily the very best of the Holiday Season and aSuper 2012. Especially if you’re traveling, have avery safe and merry Holiday Season.
Before you know, it will be spring training! Theball games will start and Gulf and Manatee ShrineClubs will be back in the full swing of things withPittsburgh Pirates at McKechnie Field. If you wouldlike to help these Shrine Clubs, they could use yourhelp. There are a lot of jobs that need to be done tomake it all work out. It’s a lot of fun and you’ll havea good time working with your Shrine brothers andtheir ladies.

score, but the trip to the hospital and the kids. I havebeen asked to head up the job of making sure theplayers get picked up from the airport and trans-ported to the hotel where they will stay. I have eightpassenger vans to use which I will need drivers for
and need about a half dozen Shriners to work at theairport to send the players in the right direction totheir ride. Let me know if you would like to help.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone and his orher families, best wishes for the holidays and a HappyNew Year. We are looking forward for another greatyear in 2012.

For quite some time I have felt that more noblesand ladies would come forward when volunteers
were needed if they had a better understanding ofwhat would be required of them. Since my becominginvolved in the Unit Council and also with the Bingofood concession it has become increasingly evidentthat we need to try some new approaches if we wantto get more efficient use of our human resources. Asan example, pleas for Bingo help made in the Re-porter, at Thursday luncheons, Club/Unit Head meet-ings, and yes, at Unit Council meetings too, havebeen met with very little response. With that in mindand in the interest of better communications the UnitCouncil is in the process of documenting and willpublicize some of the manpower needs for our Tues-day Bingo sessions. We chose this particular activitybecause it is by far the single biggest temple moneyraiser we have. In addition, the harsh reality is thatwithout it our doors would probably close. So, in thenear future, be on the lookout for more specifics of ourBingo needs. Meanwhile, if you have some time stopby some Tuesday and get a first hand look at what isone of Sahib’s great endeavors.
By this time the annual opening of the SarasotaKennel Club (SKC) will be history. For quite some

time we have been fortunate to take part in theopening of the SKC dog racing season. SKC ownershave been gracious enough to allow us to sell en-trance tickets throughout the parking lot and at theentrances for the benefit of our units and clubs. Inaddition, units and clubs have been honored withnamed races throughout the day and evening perfor-mances as well as our Potentate at a featured race inthe evening. For all this, we are sincerely grateful.
The next big undertaking for the Unit Council willbe responsibility for Sahib’s participation in nextyears 76th annual Sarasota County Fair which willrun from March 16-25, 2012. This is assuming thatwe get the task from the county. By the time, you readthis we should know for sure. Meanwhile, we havenext years schedule and have begun filling in sched-uled workers. One change from previous years is thatunits and clubs will receive the benefits of theirlabors on a pro rata basis. This is in keeping with thecouncils desire to aid units/clubs in their financialneeds.
Until next time let’s all try to have some fun whilesupporting Sahib.

Golf cart drivers needed. Sahib needs a fewgood men (besides Marines) to drive our golf carts atthe Thursday men’s luncheons, once a month Sundaymorning Pancake Breakfasts and now Tuesday morn-ings for Sahib Bingo.
No maintenance required on your part. Just pullthe charging plug out-drive the golf cart around theparking lots-then when finished plug the chargingcord back in and lock the garage. I can teach you howto properly drive the golf carts in 15 minutes or less.
The public always comments to me how nice it isto be picked up and driven to our front door. Sahibneeds to keep this good work and tradition going andfurther expand it to Tuesday mornings Bingo.
For the November 6 Sahib pancake breakfast, wehad two golf carts in use. First time volunteer SteveSpencer did a bang-up job for us. Thanks Steve! Hereare some interesting stats:
Driver Van Dyke brought 64 people to the frontdoor from their cars and picked up 18 guests at thefront door and returned them to their cars.
Driver Spencer brought 73 people to the frontdoor from their cars and picked up 36 guests at thefront door and returned them to their cars.
Grand Totals: 54 out and 137 in. In offering togive rides back to their cars more folks want to walkoff their meal. Both drivers drove from 8:00 a.m. until1:00 p.m.

First Ceremonial Master notesby Carroll Scribner
Greetings and salutations to all, it’s been a whilesince I had an article in our Reporter and this is
my fault. I’ve been on the road so much that I losttrack of the dates! I know you all were upset andperplexed by this omission and I apologize profusely,on bended knee and with bated breath! I’ll try tomake amends with several extra riotous tales atThursday Lunch!
This note will be the first of many more to come, soI’d like to share my thoughts at this point on the officeof First Ceremonial Master as I have found it:
1) It is the busiest and most demanding Shrine jobI have ever held and I have held many, and, without question, it is the most rewarding!
2) It is a job for both husband and wife. In mymind, I could not have succeeded withoutSandy, my wife. She carried more than hershare of the load of planning and implementingthe Potentate’s program, particularly theCeremonial with all of its mailing and protocol. She was there on every occasion to help ourPotentate and First Lady achieve their goals forSahib this year.
3) It is the Introductory Course, Shrine 101 whereyou learn the ins and outs of the overall opera-tion. It is here that we learned who the realSahib workers are! When we asked for help, thesupport was overwhelming! People came to usand said,” don’t worry about the tables, we’lltake care of that,” we’ve always done the door, don’t worry about it!” “the table decorations are
all set, cross them off your list,” the Greeterswill be there to do the doors, no problem!,” I’lltake care of our hospital family, don’t worryabout it!,” the tickets are our job. We’ll take careof them. I could go on and on, but I don’t havethe space. Suffice it to say, we made many new friendsthis year. They are the heart and soul of Sahib!I salute and thank them! We could not havedone our job without you!
4) I began to understand the complexity of ourtemple, both the human side and the businessside.
Your Divan is made up of strong-minded and capablemen. This is as it must be to succeed in leading Sahib. They have their different points of view and expressthem openly and freely! They may differ on occasion, but it is temporary and passing. They put differencesaside and come together for the common good of theirtemple on the business side; your Divan does a mag-nificent job of squeezing every nickel until it yields atleast 10 cents! I have seen no waste of resources, nofrivolous spending, from this group!
If I have a concern, it’s that the Potentate has tospend so much time raising money to keep us going!
I could go on, but I think I’ve said enough.I look forward to continuing to serve you and
Sahib and, most of all, to serving our kids! Many thanks; it’s been a great learning experi-
ence!
Hospital Days Committee Reportby Tim Kinchla, Co-Chair Hospital Days, [email protected]
To date the Hospital Days Committee has had twomeetings. On October 27 and November 3.
The first meeting’s goal was to get acquainted andhave attendees fill out information forms. Establishcollection dates in 2012 which were agreed upon bythose attending. Those dates will be Feb. 2, 3 and 4.
All representatives attending had sites from thepast that they were planning to use in 2012.
A discussion was held re: the consent form thatwas to be used and it was mentioned that the formneeds rewriting. This was accomplished and wasapproved by Chief Rabban Charles Levan, 33°.
Final point of discussion was the possibilities ofordering Hospital Days shirts. An order form was tobe designed and shared with attendees.
In preparation for meeting number two, all unitsand clubs were extended invitations to attend.
The meeting began with Sahib Treasurer DaleLaBell giving us the figures from the budget as toamount budgeted for the transportation fund, theamount on hand and the expenses thus far this year.
Manager approval forms were handed out to at-tendees and one was received.
It was offered that the Pipes & Drums Unit haveplayed at St. Armand’s Circle in the past and there isa real need for collection from the nobles of Sahib.
Concerns were raised about the possibility of TVads, here as well as radio ads on FM 107.9 and others. Is this something that might be done by Imperial orthe Sahib public relations team?
To date the following units and clubs have beenrepresented at either one or both of these meetings:
Clowns Gulf Shrine ClubGreeters Manatee Shrine ClubKentucky Colonels Northport Shrine ClubModel T’s Venice Shrine ClubMotor CorpsPipes & Drums
Communication has been held with a member of theAides, Mariners and Provost Guards.

Bingo Reportby Don Vos PP, Chairman, [email protected]
Nobles, we are indeed grateful for what is going onin Bingo. The report for September 30 showed
that we had exceeded the total monies for all lastyear.
Then last week for our Halloween day, showedthat we do have the best Bingo going on for all ofSarasota. The people are very happy with our Bingo,
and they showed up with great costumes for theevent.
If you can stop by and see for yourself what is goingon, you would be truly amazed. I would like to thankall of our volunteers for their great help in makingBingo at Sahib very successful, without you, wewould not be as great as we are. Again, many thanks.
Circusby Kenneth Shipley, Circus Chairman, [email protected]
As you read this, many thoughts are on the upcom-ing holiday parties, Divan elections, the return of
the “snowbirds,” and of course your wish list forSanta. As the Sahib Circus committee steps up its’activity, we have two big wishes. We would love tohave a volunteer step forward and take charge of theprogram book, and another to take charge of thepublicity and sales. Many nobles have said theywanted to help but could not take a lengthily obliga-tion. Each of these positions would only be for abouttwo months and allow Bob Trudel and me to concen-trate on the real nuts and bolts of the Circus planningand operation.
To say that the seven months since our last SahibShrine Circus have been a down time for the commit-tee would be a great misunderstanding. Due to sev-eral events and timing, we have just about had tostart from scratch for this year’s event. The three-year contract for the telemarketer expired. Afterextensive research and evaluation of all possibleoptions, a one-year contract was settled upon withStar Productions. Calling began October 1 and is tocease on April 30, 2012 with collections to be com-pleted by May 30. Even with that guarantee from thetelemarketer, our expenses are only covered atabout 75%.
The three-year contract with the circus produceralso expired. An extensive search of available showswas made and with the combination of quality andcost, it was decided by the Divan to contract withCircus Hollywood for a three-day circus for the nextthree years. The Sahib Shrine Circus will be pre-sented on the second weekend of April for the nextthree years with the price locked in. We have theright to cancel this contract for any reason at least sixmonths prior to the performance dates. It gives us
locked in costs with flexibility in case our conditionsor needs change.
We had our telemarketer and producer, but thenthe fun began. The Sarasota Fair Board made theFruitville Road location unavailable to us. It was acombination of verbal misunderstanding and ourchoice of producers. After five months of searchinglocations from Bradenton through Venice, the north-east corner of Fruitville Road and Interstate 75 be-came available. It should provide plenty of space andvisibility from two highly traveled routes. Termswere agreed upon and I could finally take time to visitfamily up north. After experiencing a freak snow-storm in October, I got the heck out of there and backto paradise.
I will again be visiting with most units and clubsto ask (beg) for your continued participation andsupport for this coming April. As usual, the Fridaymorning show will be for the school kids at no cost tothem (we still have to pay for it.) This is where yoursupport as a Circus Dad or Circus Mom is reallyneeded. It is our only means of providing for this. Ihope to have the early afternoon show on Saturday asa special show for the huge group at Sun and Funcampground. We can have a parade with our Model Ts,the Motor Corps, the Clowns, Hillbilly truck, followedby the golf carts decorated in a circus theme. A cashprize can be awarded to the best-decorated cart. Theparade would begin in the park and travel the shortdistance down Fruitville road to the circus grounds.Of course, many details and permits need to be workedout.
Already this year has been very busy and exciting. We would welcome any and all nobles to provide inputand participate in your Sahib Shrine Circus. Callus.

Greetings with additional news from the month of October,we were very busy with the parade in Venice on October
15, and our two community events. The first event was with the Sarasota Fire Department at
their Fire Prevention Day Fair. We greeted the people attend-ing by telling them of our Shriners Hospitals for Childrenburns hospitals and giving rides to the small children in ourModel T cars.
The second event was at the Palmetto High School at theircommunity appreciation night, where community service orga-nizations are recognized for their contributions. Again, wewere given the opportunity to talk, greet the public and tellthem about Sahib Shrine and our hospitals. We also had ourModel T cars there to show everyone how much fun it is to bea Sahib Shriner.
On October 14, the Model Ts had a going away dinner forForest Fahrbach; who is moving to Indianapolis, Indiana tolive permanently. Forest is one of the last of our charteredmembers, who was always there helping the Model Ts (photoon page.

Did the Masonic Scholar Albert Pike really saythat all Masons were followers of Lucifer? No. In
many anti-Masonic books, you’ll see what is supposedto be a quotation from Pike saying that all Masons ofthe “Higher Degrees” are secret worshipers of Luci-fer. The historical fact is that those words werewritten by a notorious atheist and pornographernamed Gabriel Jogand-Pages, but better known byhis pen name, Leo Taxil. Taxil was engaged in anelaborate hoax to discredit the Church of Rome andmade up the Pike quotation out of thin air. Hispurpose was to show that the church had failed torecognize the “threat” posed by Freemasonry andwas, therefore, headed by fools and incompetents.Taxil publicly admitted the hoax in 1997, but it had
already been published by a man named Abel Clarinde la Rive, who took Taxil’s hoax at face value.
Rive’s book., ‘La Femme et l’Enfant dans la Franc-Maconnerie Universselle, (Woman and Child in Uni-versal Freemasonry) quoted by Edith Star Miller in1933, in her book ‘Occult Theocrasy’. She translatedthe “quotation” into English.
Since that time, several writers of anti-Masonicbooks have simply repeated the “quotation” withoutchecking on its source or authenticity. Taxil’s publicconfession notwithstanding, it continues to shadowthe name of Pike, who was, to his death, a sincere anddevoted Trinitarian Christian (to be continued in theJanuary 2012 issue)
The officers and staff of the Valley of Tampa,Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Ma-
sonry wish each of you a very happy and joyful holi-day season.
As this is the time for giving and sharing, let usremember our Scottish Rite Foundation. In the 1950’sScottish Rite Masons in Colorado began a program tohelp children with speech and language disorders(aphasia). The success of this program led to theestablishment of speech and language centersthroughout the country. These centers provide diag-nosis and treatment of childhood speech and lan-guage disorders and associated learning disabilities. Most of the patients are preschool children who havedifficulty speaking or understanding the spoken wordor school age children who have difficulty learning toread.
The state of Florida has fourteen Scottish RiteClinics, six of which are in the jurisdiction of theValley of Tampa; Lakeland, New Port Richey, St.Petersburg, Sarasota, Tampa and Brandon.
What better gift can one give than to help a youngchild speak, read and be able to communicate with
family and friends? As we approach the holidays, letus remember the words of Isaiah 60:1, “Rise up insplendor! Your light has come, the glory of the Lordshines upon you.” Now, let us reflect that light on thechildren in our communities who can be helped by ourfoundation.

The more we count the blessings we have, the lesswe crave the luxuries we haven’t. This is very
pertinent for this month. We will be sharing manyblessings this month so we don’t have to crave any-thing else. We are blessed to have welcomed threenew Princesses into Nyla Temple. We hope they enjoybeing involved as Ladies of the Household.
I have been traveling to other temples to visitwhile the Supreme Queen is present. We are blessedto have such wonderful friends in the Daughters ofthe Nile. I hope to visit at least four temples duringthe month of December before we have our officialvisit in January.
It is a joy to me when I speak with ladies who showsuch excitement about the possibility of becomingone of us. Remember, you only have to have a Masonicor Shrine affiliation, be a majority member of Rain-bow or Jobs Daughters or other appendant body. Welook forward to welcoming some of you in the nearfuture.
Have a blessed holiday season. See you in the NewYear.
In Nile love.
It was Sar-I Court’s honor to have Lady SandyNewby, Grand High Priestess for her official visit
on Monday, November 7. Lady Sandy is travelingover the United States and Canada putting out theword about Ladies Oriental Shrine and her specialprojects for this year. Lady Sandy’s Special Project isLOKOMAT Therapy Research and Send a Child toCamp. The monies collected this year will be dividedbetween these two projects which will benefit many ofthe Shriner’s children. Our Sar-I ladies did a greatjob of making Lady Sandy, guests and members feelwelcome. Many of us saw Lady Sandy and friendsfrom other courts at the SunShine Unit Meet held inTampa, November 3-5, ladies of Cairo Court were thehost and did a wonderful job. It was beautiful watch-ing our units perform their routines, as I stood withLady Jennie Crawford, 3-year Grand Trustee andPast Grand High Priestess.
Sar-I ladies have made another part of my year sovery special and I can’t do without them. At ourmeeting, the ladies collected food for the All Faiths
Food Bank and toys for the Sahib Transportationkids. As you can tell, we stay busy.
On Tuesday, November 8, Lady Pat Dennis wasour host for a “Grand” luncheon at Troyer’s DutchHeritage where our ladies and nobles had fun, fellow-ship and listened to Lady Sandy tell about her specialprojects. Lady Pat you did good!
December meeting and lunch will be on Friday,December 9 at 9:30 a.m. at Sahib Shrine main hall.(note time change.) Ladies bring your $1.00 for theCandy Cane March and see what Mrs. Santa has instore for us. Our Christmas luncheon will be Decem-ber 7, at Laurel Oaks Country Club and our host willbe that “Graceful Swan” Lady Liz Fox.
I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and HappyHolidays and for those traveling, safe travels.

The holidays are special and joyous times—espe-cially for children. Daughters of the Nile are
known for their generosity throughout the year, butopen their hearts even more during the holidays.TheHoliday Sharing program is a special appeal forcontributions to the Convalescent Relief Fund atyear's end. Gifts to the Holiday Sharing program aregiven to Shriners Hospitals for Children for patientcare at all 22 specialty pediatric units across NorthAmerica.
Subordinate temples have many innovative waysof raising money for the Holiday Sharing program. Some members give what they would spend on a nieceor nephew at Christmas; some give donations in lieuof sending individual holiday cards; others use spe-
cial fundraising projects earmarked for the holidaydonation. Individual donations, directly to the Foun-dation, are also welcome.
We can accomplish great things by working to-gether. In the words of Walt Disney, "If we can dreamit, we can do it." This year, we are dreaming biggerthan ever before. Won't you help us help childrenduring this special time of the year? Donations maybe given to the Princess Recorder of your Subordinatetemple, mailed to the Daughters of the Nile Founda-tion, or through our online gift store. East-West Shrine Game® fans arefamiliar with the event's logo. Theimage of a football player walk-
ing with a young girl appears on gameposters, billboards, T-shirts, as well ason the website. Although the logo isfamous, the story and the people in-volved are less well-known. Here is whathappened:
In 1974, Nicole Worley-Urteaga wasa 2-year-old patient at Shriners Hospi-tals for Children® - San Francisco (NowShriners Hospitals for Children - North-ern California). She was born with Holt-Oram syndrome, a genetic condition thataffects bones in the arms and hands. InWorley-Urteaga's case, her thumbs werenot fully developed. To provide morefunctionality, surgeons removed herthumbs and repositioned her index fin-gers in their place. The surgery allowed
Worley-Urteaga to comb herown hair, button a shirt, holda cup and be independent.
On the same day she wasrecovering from her first sur-gery, football players fromthe 1974 East-West ShrineGame visited the hospital. The annual visit is a tradi-tion during the week ofevents leading up to the bigfootball game, and allows theplayers to interact with thechildren and learn moreabout Shriners Hospitals forChildren, a 22-hospitalhealth care system that pro-vides expert care regardlessof the patients' ability to payfor services.
One of the football play-ers, Mike Esposito, especiallynoticed Worley- Urteaga be-cause she appeared scaredand was crying. Esposito tookher hand to calm her downand they walked down thehallway together. A photog-rapher from a local newspa-per noticed the scene andsnapped a photo of the twonew friends. The image per-fectly captured the spirit ofthe game and became the in-spiration for the official logoof the East-West ShrineGame.
In 1988, at the63rd East-West ShrineGame in Stanford, Calif.,Worley-Urteaga andEsposito were reunited. Athalftime, in front of an emo-tional crowd, they walkedacross the field hand-in-hand.
"It was definitely an ex-citing and nerve-wrackingmoment walking on the fieldin front of so many people,"said Worley-Urteaga. "I re-member Mike being ex-tremely calm and comforting, just like he was when I firstmet him."
Today, Worley-Urteagahas three children of her ownand works with children withdisabilities. Her son, Collin,
Nicole Worley-Urteaga and her son Collin, whois now receiving care at Shriners Hospitals for
Children - Northern California.
The Story behind the Logo
The newspaper image of Nicole Worley-Urteaga and Mike Espoisito taken by Ken Yimm,Peninsula Times-Tribune, during the East-West
Shrine Game players visit to Shriners Hospitals forChildren in 1974. The image is the inspiration for
the game's official logo.
14, was born with Holt-Oram syndromeand is a patient at Shriners Hospitalsfor Children - Northern California. Sofar, Collin has had four surgeries on hishands.
"After I found out about my son'scondition, a part of me was obviouslyconcerned, but another part felt securebecause I knew this was best place forhim to be treated," said Worley-Urteaga.
When she returned to Shriners Hos-pitals for Children - Northern Califor-nia with her son, Worley-Urteaga wasstunned when she noticed familiar faces.Collin had the same surgeon, anesthesi-ologist and nurse who helped her as achild.
"I was surprised that most of thestaff was still there and rememberedwho I was," said Worley-Urteaga. "Ithink that's what separates ShrinersHospitals for Children from everybodyelse; instead of treating you as a pa-tient, they treat you as part of theirfamily."
The 2012 East-West Shrine Game willtake place on Saturday, January 21, atTropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. For more information about the game, please visit www.shrinegame.com.

“beashrinernow.com has been an extremely helpful resource in recruiting new members,” said Randy Rudge, membership development director of Shriners International.
“In today’s world everything is about convenience, and the website allows prospective members to sign-up and learn about the great benefits of being a Shriner in a matter of minutes.”
To help bring traffic to the website, Shriners International Headquarters has put together a marketing campaign. You can find online banner ads for beashrinernow.com, as well as print ads and inserts that were created for temples to hand out to prospective members.
The website is a terrific educational resource because it helps explain the relationship between the Masonic Order and Shriners International, and also features a video about the fraternity’s history. Site visitors can learn about the fraternity’s connection with Shriners Hospitals for Children® and take a virtual tour of one of the hospitals.
beashrinernow.com also helps answer any questions about the necessary steps to becoming a Master Mason and Shriner. If, after reviewing the process, an individual would like to pursue membership, all he has to do is select “The Next Step” tab , fill out a short questionnaire, and he will be paired with a virtual mentor.
One of the great features of beashrinernow.com is the interaction membership candidates have with their virtual mentors. Virtual mentors are Shriners who are active in their temple and Masonic Lodges and have volunteered to guide interested applicants through the membership process.
Candidates are paired with virtual mentors who best suit their professional and personal interests. The mentor becomes a trusted friend and advisor through exchanges of knowledge about

Freemasonry and becoming a Shriner. The process is intended to re-create the Masonic teaching of developing close, trusting relationships with prospective Masons through personal communication.
Statistics prove beashrinernow.com is helping the fraternity more effectively reach a younger demographic, given that the most recurring age for these new members has been 32. This number is especially interesting to Shriners, since one of the fraternity’s co-founders, Dr. Walter Fleming, was the same age when he developed the concept of the fraternity.
By continuing to spread awareness with initiatives like beashrinernow.com, we look forward to adding more exceptional men to the “world’s greatest fraternity.”
For the last couple of years, Shriners International has been busy developing new tools to help increase awareness of the fraternity. One of those ongoing efforts is the website beashrinernow.com, which was created specifically as a way for interested potential members to learn about the fraternity, easily and quickly.
