‘Tis the season for family, friends and co-workers to get together, relax, have a good time and be thankful for all that we have and for living in this great nation. Thanksgiving will be behind us as you read this. I

hope everyone had a good, long weekend and your fill of turkey, and all that goes with that lovely bird. Christmas and the New Year are just around the corner. I’m sure there will be a lot of parties and gath-erings of all kinds from now until after New Years. The Legends After-Christmas/New Year’s party will be Saturday, January 8 at the Tribute Golf Club with dinner and silent auction. Please collect or donate items for the auction. The money raised will go to Patriot Paws again this year, an organization that trains service dogs for disabled Veterans. I need your reservation and payment for the party by Dec. 28. Please bring unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots to the December meeting. We will arrange for their delivery to the Marines. A big Thank You for a great 2010 and I’m looking forward to a bigger and better 2011 for our club.

This Pacific Coast Dream Cruise was an encore to the Route 66 Dream Cruise that Jerry Echols went on in 2009 with a group of C-2 Corvette owners. This cruisewould cover every mile of the Pacific Coast from Canada almost to the Mexican border. Jerry Echols and his brother-in-law and traveling companion, Tom Voss from Racine, WI, joined up with other members of the group at Brooklyn Park, MN. Leaving with themfor the “official” starting point in Vancouver on September 11, 2009 were Roy Brotherhood (Elmira, NY ‘67 coupe), Paul Jordan (Oshawa, ON ‘63 roadster), Douglas Jones (St. Charles, IL ‘65 roadster), Judy and Jim Norgren (Brooklyn Park, MN ‘65 roadster) and newcomers Lisa and Gerry Schafer (Lake Villa, IL ‘66 roadster). On the five-day trip west the six Vettes toured Glacier National Park, Lake Louise and the magnificent Canadian Rockies on the Trans-Canada Highway without mechanical malfunction. September 16 was for seeing Vancouver, plus the arrival of Kathy Brotherhood and Mary Jones at the airport. The final two C-2’s arrived, Penny and Jeff Montgomery (Mena, AR ‘63 Coupe) and Joanie and Bob Behlman (La Quinta, CA ‘67 coupe) the tour organizers. Behlmans had major transmission problems in Or-egon which damaged the crankshaft and thrust bearing beyond repair. Bob sought help on the Corvette Fo-rum and was directed to a local shop that replaced the damaged parts and allowed Joanie and Bob to arrive in Vancouver in time to start the tour. September 17 they began the trip by crossing via ocean-going ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Naniamo, on Vancouver Island. They drove through historic lumber towns and sawmills to Victoria. Another ferry brought them back to Port Angeles, WA. They found that being in a caravan of classic cars does not earn one a free pass from customs officials. Next day they went to the top of Hurricane Ridge and to Neah Bay, the northern-most point in the contigu-ous 48 states. They stayed in Forks, WA, the setting for the spooky Twilight series of books and movies. Saturday they went to Olympic National Park, which contains the Hoh Rain Forest; probably the wettest spot in the continental U.S. with an average annual rainfall of 12 feet. Hiked and had lunch there before taking the 101 south to Ocean Shores, WA. Sunday it was off to Gray’s Harbor to see a crew of re-enactors set sail in a replica 19th-century vessel. Then to Long Beach Peninsula, which has a 28-mile long sandy beach and is the home of Cape Disappoint-ment State Park, where the Lewis and Clark expedition ended its westward journey. The day ended by crossing the Columbia river to Astoria, OR. Monday they toured the Evergreen Aviation & Space

Museum in McMinnville, OR. It houses Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose and hundreds of planes, ranging from the most primitive early flying machines to military jets re-cently retired from active duty. They were invited to drive their cars onto the museum for photos with the planes. September 22 they drove south on a very rugged section of the Oregon coast. Stops included Cape Per-petua, Heceta Head Lighthouse, and the magnificent sand dunes at Honeyman State Park. They stayed in Bandon that night. The next day it was south on 101 to Port Orford (western most town in the contiguous 48) to Humbug Mountain which rises 1700 feet directly from the beach. From there on to Brookings, OR is considered to be the most scenic road in Oregon. They drove on an old wagon trail through Jedediah Smith State Park’s Stout Grove just outside Crescent City, CA where they spent the night. Jeff Montgomery’s clutch linkage broke while on the trail. They returned to town where he had the broken bell crank welded and was back on the road in an hour. September 24th they drove through many miles of giant redwoods in several national and state parks, with a photo op at a drive-thru redwood. There was a leg-stretching/shopping stop at Ferndale where they met a C-2 owner who was following their adventure on Cor-vette Forum. Then on to Garberville for the night. Friday they passed the southern end of the redwoods and left 101 to take Highway 1 along the coast through Fort Bragg and Mendocino. They went to the Roederer Champaign Estate, then on to Hopland for dinner at the Brutocao Cellars. They spent the night at Ukiah. This inland day was warm and sunny compared to the damp foggy September chill so prevalent along the coast. Sat-urday was spent touring the Brutocao vineyards then off

to the hotel in Mill Valley, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Sunday morning was the ideal time to cross the bridge into San Francisco. There were great photo ops on the bluff above the bridge. The passengers walked across the bridge to get pictures of the Vettes as they crossed. The rest of the day they drove down Lombard St., and visited Fisherman’s Wharf and Alcatraz, and cruised through the Presidio. They left the city through Golden Gate Park and took Highway 1 through Paci-fica, Half Moon Bay, Pigeon Point and Santa Cruz to their evening stop in Monterrey. Monday morning they paid to enjoy the “17-Mile Drive” through Pebble Beach Golf Course and some of the priciest real estate on the Pacific Coast. Lunch was at Carmel. Then they continued south on Highway 1 through the twists, turns and fantastic scenery of Big Sur to San Simeon for the night. They toured the remarkable Hurst Castle the next morning. Wednesday they took the 101 south to Santa Barbara, where they toured the mission, ate lunch and enjoyed the welcomed warm sun. They went on to Simi Valley for the night, where they toured the Reagan Presidential Library Thursday morning. They got on the Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Monica Pier, where their Route 66 tour had ended. The rest of the day was spent getting through traffic to the hotel in Costa Mesa. October 2 they had a tour of a private auto collec-tion. Then south through the beach cities to lunch at the 101 Cafe in Oceanside, a true relic of bygone era. Fur-ther down the coast they went through Carlsbad, Torrey Pines, Mission Bay and Coronado Island. They took the Silver Strand Highway to the southernmost point in the journey. Saturday, day 17, was the last official day of our Pacific Coast Dream Cruise. They left their San Di-ego hotel to tour the USS Midway. Then they were off to their final stop at the Behlman’s home near Palm Springs where they spent several days enjoying their hospitality, decompressing, changing oil, making re-pairs, doing laundry, taking some wives to the airport, and mentally preparing to return home.

by Esther Towles Photos by Roger Berry We arrived at our group meeting place south of Dallas in pitch black darkness, wondering what things would look like in the daylight. We were not the last ones, but as usual we were not the first. We went into “Willie’s Place” previously known as “Carl’s Corner” (Carl’s Corner burned down several years ago, no insurance, so Willie rebuilt the truck stop). Everyone was inside eating, drinking coffee, and discussing our plans for the day, when Carl of “Carl’s Corner” decided to give our group a tour of his new establishment. We started in the restaurant, thru to the dance hall, ladies’ power room with crystal light fixture, drapes, etc. From there we went to the saloon, where they have poker matches. Carl told my Carl he should buy the place, because he wouldn’t have to change the name. You can guess his reply. We had our drivers’ meet-ing, loaded up and started out east as the sun was coming up. Very pretty, and believe it or not, Willie Nelson came on the radio with, “On the Road Again.” A few brave drivers had their tops down. We weren’t one of them. Old Red has a good heater, but not that good. We drove thru winding roads, up and down hills. We found our way to La Grange, Texas and to Las Fuentes Mexican Restaurant for lunch. They had a special room for us and the service and food was fast and good. We were right on schedule leaving La Grange heading for Shiner Brewery in Shiner, Texas. At this

point with the beautiful weather, almost everyone put their tops down. We arrived at the brewery for our PERSONAL TOUR. We are really special, or maybe Bill Tichy knew how to have us treated special??? The sample room was great, we each got poker chips for four beers of our choice, Shiner of course. We could tell it was not our guide’s first day. She was really good, even shared recipes for brownies and topping from Shiner Black. (The brownies really are good, my daughter made them and they ate them in one sit-ting.) Following the tour, we went to the hotel, settled in and got ready for our night out at the restored “Sen-gelmann Hall” dance hall and saloon. The restoration was wonderful and was worth seeing. The meal was OK, not our best of the trip. It’s worth the stop just to see the dance hall. We started back to the hotel and as we were almost to the hotel we saw “guess who” at the Dairy Queen... THE ICE CREAM KING, John Zachary. We didn’t notice soon enough to stop, but we did take advantage of his find the next night. Saturday morning we went down to the compli-mentry breakfast. It was really good; waffles shaped like Texas, eggs, bacon and everything else that goes with breakfast. Our very friendly server, Cath-erine, was willing to try to provide us with anything she could find. She even provided Carl with a bag of waffle mix for our trip home. After breakfast we were off to the Chamber of

Commerce and our tour of the Painted Churches. It was hard to believe that the local people immigrated thru Galveston with nothing, made homes for them-selves and built those beautiful painted churches. They were all Catholic, as most German immigrants were. The PBS program about the churches, that aired right after our trip, did not do them justice, but it did fill in some of the blanks for me. The churches got more beautiful with each stop. They had been built and maintained with a great deal of love. Many of the younger people have moved away, but someone maintains the farms or ranches today. They have not given up on their land. After the churches, part of the group went shop-ping, to the hotel and a few of the brave went to the Stanzel Model Airplane founder’s home and factory. The factory was interesting, but the home was unbelievable, People really lived and raised families in that little space. The family tree was on the wall and showed many generations, wedding and birth documents, family records and and kitchen staples. I really enjoyed seeing this. I think it made me ap-preciate the Painted Churches more. This family was wealthy and lived in a very small space. Most of the people who built the churches were starting their lives in a new country with nothing, and they still were able to build these beautiful churches. We saw three churches in the morning and then went to lunch at the Oakridge Smokehouse. Again we had our own room. Maybe they expected us to misbehave. We had a guard who told us when we

could go thru the line, and made us wait until it was our turn. We all saluted her. The food was great, a real mix of German, American and... you guess! They had very good bread pudding with lemon sauce, and a couple of different kinds of cobbler, with cake... We were even given the bus discount. We all rolled out to the parking lot and headed back to the hotel, a quick shower and change of clothes, then on the road to Moulton, TX and the Kloesel’s Steak House & Bar. Again they sent us up to a private room with our own staff and the food was good. During dinner we received word, THE RANGERS HAD WON a game that night! Just in case you got lost in my story, we did stop at the Dairy Queen as did several more who had seen John the night before Sunday was sad because most of the group left to go home. Their fun was over and our was still go-ing on as we continued on to San Antonio, which was less than two hours away. We were there way before check in. We checked our bags, found safe parking places for the “babies”, bought a day pass for the trol-ley and went to see San Antonio.

8

We had lunch at the Spanish Market, where we selected an outdoor restaurant with lots of music, noise and good food. We rolled down the sidewalk, into several shops and back on the trolley. We made a quick stop at the International Accordion Festival on the riverwalk to listen one set, then back to the hotel to check in and change for our evening out. We took the trolley again, rode around and didn’t find what were looking for. So we changed to the red trolley and went back to the Spanish Market for des-sert. Just a point of interest, we got on the red trolley five times, each time with the same driver. We didn’t even have to show our pass. It was like we had a private driver. John and Mickey went back to the hotel. Bill, Na-dine, Carl and I went back to the International Accor-dion Festival and heard another group. The festival was a really fun learning experience. I didn’t know there were that many different kinds of accordion music, all kinds. We walked back to the hotel along the river walk. The whole sidewalk was full of people dancing. We would have danced, but I was afraid of falling in the river, there was that many people dancing. Agreeing to meet in the lobby in the morning we went to pass out in our rooms. Monday morning, we were on our way home by way of San Marcos, TX. We stopped at a community for brunch and shopping. Our last

stop was a Dairy Queen outside of Temple, and then home. Sorry everyone in the club could not make the trip with us, but we hope you will try and go next time, the more the merrier. These trips are great, because we have people in our club who work really hard to make them wonderful for the lazy people. Carl and I have always wanted to go to Shiner, but never got around to it. Now we can tell everyone who sees our T-shirts how much fun Shiner really is. Bill and Nadine Tichy deserve many, many THANKS for giving us the gift of a GREAT TIME with GREAT PEOPLE. They did all the work, making all the arrangements. We only had to pack, show up and pay for things. We just want them to know we will follow them anywhere. As you can tell from the title of this article, we really need to change the name of this trip to “Drive and Eat”. Making the trip were; John & Carole Arakelian, Tom Atchison, Julia Kelsey, Roger Berry, Larry & Jan Dyer, Jerry & Barb Echols, Tom & Mary Jeanne Entrekin, Jim Jenkins, Carl Johanson, Esther Towles, Mike & Linda McCall, Mike & Sharon Nelson, Larry & Jan Rollow, Pete & Sherry Snider, Ken & Kathy Weller, John & Mickye Zachary and our esteemed tour leaders Bill & Nadine Tichy.
