Photo on Page 1: The Sahib Shrine Divan sends Holiday Greetings, elected mid-year and not in the photo arecurrent Recorder Emeritus Bill Batten and Oriental Guide Rocky Kearney.

This is the season of peace, whichis our eternal quest. It is what

we want. IT is what we pray for;but, it eludes us. In the dark daysof WWII the Commander of theBritish forces, Field Marshal Mont-gomery said, “The greatest singlefactor in the world is strength, re-ligious strength, moral strength, economic strength, militarystrength. It is strength that makesfor peace.”

This holiday season speaks pri-marily of peace. So, what is it thatwe are all talking about? Is peacethe prize of all virtues? Is it onlythe absence of war? Is it somethinggiven after everyone has what heor she wants? If we escape theturmoil of terrorism, will life bemore peaceful?

My philosophy comes from theBible, which says that peace is aby-product of righteousness. Inother words, something else mustfirst come before peace. There ispeace where there is harmony.

There is peace where there is jus-tice. There is peace where there ishonesty, truth, equity and respect.

It would be foolish to think therecan be peace if people prove to beuntrustworthy and pertinacious. It is right that we should pray forpeace, but it is a delusion to be-lieve peace will come when hu-manity does not take the necessarysteps to straighten itself out. “Lovethy neighbor as thyself” are thewords of Biblical wisdom. If wecannot be at peace with ourselves,we cannot be at peace with oneanother.

To those of a Christian mindChrist is the Prince of Peace. Tothose of a Jewish culture peace isinherent in all the prophets pro-claim: “For a child is born for us, aSon is given to us...Wonderful,Counselor, Mighty God, Everlast-ing Father, Prince of Peace.’ There-fore, “Depart from evil, and do good, seek peace and pursue it.”

Season’s Greetings to all!

I call your attention to the UnitNews on page 18, you will notice

the contributing units are in al-phabetical order, there are 15 unitslisted in the Reporter, and anotherseven that traditionally have notparticipated in the unit news sec-tion (two that do not have an ad inthe Reporter either!) In this issuethere are only four units with ar-ticles. This is a subject I’ve had inthe queue to broach for some time, where are the units in our Reporter?

Hey, I know as much as anyone, that preparing an article for theReporter is a pain, I have paintimes 20! Perhaps it would be ap-propriate to mention a couple ofthe reasons why a unit should havea presence in the Reporter. Thefirst one is obvious, to communi-cate with the membership whatthe unit has done, or is about to do.What about the message it sends

to new nobles when a unit doesn’tchose to participate in the UnitNews section? I would suspect anew noble and his family wouldassume, if they don’t see your unitin Unit News, that it is not a veryactive unit; therefore not worthy ofconsideration for joining. From myperspective, when Unit News onlytakes up 2 or 3 pages out of a 56-page magazine, it would seem thatour publication is not about theunits of Sahib, are the units a vitalpart of Sahib or not?

I also call your attention to the“Lost in Cyberspace” article onpage 26, many of our mailing listsubscribers are not receiving theSahib Friday Webletter, becausetheir email address is no longercorrect, or they have their emailclient set up not to accept emailfrom our mailing list. Please checkto see if you are on the list.

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

Here it is December 2010. This has been a great year for your SahibShrine. It is very gratifying to have been your Potentate this year. OurShrine is in very good financial condition. With a great opportunity in thefuture, with our past Potentates and their fiscal responsibility, we aredoing well. We have been there for you and your ladies.

We must continue unrelenting membership; this is our number-one priorityand never stop thinking that we do not need new members, as this is amust for our future. Nobles, please remember to bring in replacements forour nobles who are leaving our midst. Everything we do is in vain, unlesswe remember membership is our future.

We have just finished with our Thanksgiving season. We must be thankfulfor what we have at Sahib and Shrine International; we do have the bestfraternity and philanthropy in the world and must continue to keep itgoing.

We wish to thank all of our friends for the upcoming Holiday Season.Merry Christmas to all of our nobles and their ladies, and wishing all ofyou a great 2011 year. Let us not forget all of our friends who have ill-nesses and other problems, remember to keep all of them in our prayers.

Speaking of prayers, Lady Carol and I would like to thank everyone whomade this a wonderful Sahib year. There are too many to do this person-ally, but we know who you are and we say God Bless you all, God Bless theShrine and God bless the U.S.A.

Remember your Blue Lodge

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year.

Yours in the Faith,

Don Vos, Potentate

Chief Rabban’s notesby Tom Millaway, [email protected]

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Charles M. Levan, 33°, [email protected]

The year 2010 is fast coming to an end. This hasbeen a very active year for the nobility and friends

of Sahib. The calendar indicated an abundance ofactivities for everyone to choose in which they wantedto participate. We had many available opportunitiesto join with our fellow nobles for lunches and dinneras well as events that were entertaining. I hope youmanaged to attend several.

Programs available in November included ourAnnual Memorial Service held to remember our fel-low nobles who passed away during the previous 12months. This year there were 56 nobles who werecalled by the Black Camel. This is scheduled on ourcalendar every year, and it would be very nice if youremember to note the date of the event in 2011, andplan on attending. Our Salute to Veterans program isalso an annual event; with excellent outside speakersand music provided by our Concert Band make thisanother outstanding event to place on your 2011calendar.

December 1 is the opportunity for every noble toexpress his choice for our Sahib officers for the year2011. The annual election will be held on that date atour annual meeting. Our leaders for the coming yearwill be elected that night, and you can be a part of theelection process. Come to this meeting! Your vote willhelp elect the nobles of your choice.

December is the month that many of our clubs andunits hold their Christmas parties. It is always good toget the holiday feeling by attending these events. Ofspecial interest in December is the Annual Ladies DayChristmas Luncheon, which will be held on Thursday,December 9. This is always a special event with anoutstanding musical program performed by the BookerHigh School Performing Arts Center students. Bringyour lady to this special holiday event. You both willenjoy it. Sahib Noble Gus Spurr will entertain usprior to the luncheon with a selection of holidaytunes.

May you have a Happy Holiday Season, and aWonderful New Year.

Where has the year gone? Here it is the holidayseason already and I haven’t even started to

buy Christmas presents. December 1 is a very impor-tant meeting. It is election night and every nobleshould make every effort to attend and select theofficers for 2011.

The first weekend, December 3 and 4 is the SahibCeremonial, again, an important event to welcomenew nobles to Sahib.

After we have the ceremonial, then the real funbegins. All of the Christmas parties. Fun, fellowshipand family gathering together to enjoy each othersfellowship and the reason for the season.

Membership continues to be a major concern. Thereare many Master Masons that have not been asked tojoin our fellowship. Share the fellowship of the SahibShrine and ask a brother to be one of us. HappyHolidays!

Silver bells, decorating trees, calling old friends, attending parties, the joys of Christmas are all

around us. The feelings of friendship and brother-hood are with us. This is the way we should be all yearlong, but why is it we only get these feelings atChristmastime? The old year is ending and we lookforward to the new year with hope that everythingwill be better than ever.

Sahib has a full schedule of activities that willkeep us hopping all month! We will be enjoyingparties galore, searching for the perfect gift for some-

one special, the dinners with friends and families, abusy but happy time of year, so why not make oneadditional commitment to bring in a new member toour Sahib Shrine and fraternity. This is where weobtain new leaders, new volunteer workers for thehospitals and where we build our friendships andfellowships, and share with others.

The very best of wishes to you all from Lady Kayeand myself. We both hope you have the merriestChristmas and a Happy New Year, and as always, may God bless our fraternity.

University of Southern California majoring in pre-law. Wayneplayed football for USC but was derailed by an accident whichlost him his athletic scholarship. He then began working forlocal film studios as Western Star Tom Mix had found him asummer job in the prop department in exchange for football

tickets. He managed to get a few bitparts in movies and established a longfriendship with Director, John Ford.

Contrary to popular opinion, JohnWayne’s first big role in the movies wasnot Stagecoach. It was in fact a moviemade in 1930 called “The Big Trail” thefirst big production film using sound. Ihave it in my collection. Listing JohnWayne’s movie credits would take toolong and I’m sure we are aware of mostof them anyway, needless to say it isextensive. Two expressions used by JohnWayne which are easily recognizable tomost of us are “That’ll be the day” and“Pilgrim”. I’ve been known to use thefirst one myself on the odd occasion.

John Wayne was a member ofGlendale DeMolay Chapter during hisschool Days. He received his Craftdegrees in 1970 in Marion McDanielLodge No. 56, Tucson Arizona. A seniorDeMolay he was awarded the DeMolayLegion of Honour in 1970. In Decemberof that year, he joined the York Rite

Bodies in California and became a Shriner al Al MalaikahShrine Temple.

The internet is full of additional information concerning thisMason and Noble. I urge you to do some surfing yourself. Youwill find it most interesting.

Like a great many of you, some of the earliest, if not thefirst movies I saw as a child were films of the AmericanWest. Foremost in my memory were the cavalry pictures

of John Ford. Films like Rio Grande, Fort Apache and She Worea Yellow Ribbon. All of which now form part of the 1,500DVDs in my collection. The star of thosemovies was none other than JohnWayne, an actor that needs nointroduction or explanation to anyoneworldwide. He was born Marion RobertMorrison, in Winterset Iowa, May 26th,1907. The middle name was soonchanged to Michael after his parentsdecided to name their second childRobert. His grandfather, Marion MitchellMorrison was an American Civil WarVeteran. John Wayne’s heritage wasIrish, Scottish and English. The familymoved to California in 1911 where hisfather worked as a pharmacist inGlendale, California. It was during histime in Glendale that the name “Duke”became forever attached to thisAmerican icon. It appears that on hiswas to school each day he had to passthe fire house. A local fireman at thefirehouse started calling him “littleduke” because Wayne always wasaccompanied by his huge Airedale TerrierDuke. The name stuck.

As a teen Wayne worked in an ice cream parlour for a manwho shod horses for some of the Hollywood Studios. He alsojoined the Order of DeMolay, a youth organization associatedwith the Freemasons. Wayne applied to the US NavalAcademy but was not accepted. Instead he attended the

Greetings nobles and friends, Thanksgiving hasjust passed and we are looking forward to our

end of the year festivities and the beginning of a newyear.

I just want to say that it has been a very good yearfor the Gulf Shrine Club. All the credit goes to ourfantastic group of dedicated members and their la-dies who live and love Shrinedom. Reflecting on twoof those dedicated Shriner’s we are thankful for; Iwould be remiss if I did not mention the Black Cameltook Noble William “Bill” Perman from us a fewweeks ago. Motor Corps Shrine Clubby Stevin C. Helin (Varmint), Scribe, [email protected]

Greetings all, and yes, I know, I know, there wasno article last month from the Motor Corps. My

bad, I was on the road racking up some of the 3900miles on my fall bike trip up north when the deadlinecame and went. But, did you really miss me, eh, Imean, the article? On second thought, don’t answerthat.

I will try to keep this short in covering the high-lights of this 3-month time frame. October was greatbut had a ‘scary ending’. November was cooler thanSeptember and had an ‘over-stuffed finale’ to it. Asfor December, on behalf of the officers and membersof the Motor Corps, we wish you a fantastic Christ-mas holiday with a visit from the chubby dude in thered suit with your desired goodies, if you have a

chimney, that is. I sincerely hope that everyone re-ceives everything they deserve.

As you read this, the Hanukkah holiday seasonwill have already started as of December 2. The samegreeting from the Motor Corps for a terrific andenjoyable holiday season goes out to all who celebratethis holiday time.

And don’t forget to support your clubs and units intheir charitable endeavors this time of year and byattending your Christmas and holiday parties, as wellas all of the great events and entertainment at Sahib, including the grand gala event on New Year’s Eve.

The MC will celebrate Christmas with a gatheringon Saturday, December 18. I am sure that members

will have received detailed information by now as totime and attire. If not, please contact our ever-vigi-lant and attentive President John Hubbard, for thatinformation.

On a personal note, I would like to say that I havethoroughly enjoyed many of the special programs, events, and one-of-a-kind supper-dances sponsoredby Sahib this past year, and would like to thank andcongratulate our Potentate Ill. Don Vos for his lead-ership, Food and Beverage Manager Gene Borkowski,Event Coordinator Linda Glendinning, our ExecutiveChef Robert McClain and his excellent kitchen crew, all of the wait and bar staffs, and anyone else in-volved with organizing and producing these extraspecial fun times, especially at such reasonable rates. For those who missed these times, you certainly haveforegone one of the great benefits of belonging toSahib Shrine.

I would also personally like to thank the officers ofthe MC for a fun year: President John Hubbard, VPEric Bock (also our Road Captain), Secretary AlDahlberg, Treasurer Wally Lacey and a special thanksto Quarter Master Terry Meadows who took on ajumbled up mess at the beginning of the year andturned it into an efficient, very well organized opera-tion where everyone could order the different articlesavailable and actually get them within a short timeframe in the right size and color, etc. Thank you allfor your time and dedication to our beloved andadmired Sahib Motor Corps.

Okay, love me or hate me time. Here are thebirthdays and anniversaries, for two months. I wouldget fired if I didn’t put this in, regardless if there is anarticle worth reading or not, so here it goes:

November Birthdays were Dee Campbell on the17th, Terry Meadows on the 18th, Temp Hamilton onthe 20th and Lady Connie Lacey on the 27th.

November Anniversaries were Barry and BarbaraHart on the 15th and Bill and Darla Furst on the 27th.

December Birthdays are Dave Bell on the 9th,Lady Beatty Shipley on the 10th, Lady MarciaCampbell and Toni Galanti on the 19th, Lady KatieJones on the 21st and Jay Spenla on Christmas day.

December Anniversaries are Paul and SueWoodman on the 17th, Jeff and Muriel Young on the22nd and Scott and Joni Steelman on the 31st.

There, there, now that wasn’t so bad. Once againI remind the members that if your information shouldbe here and it is not, or if it is incorrect, well, whocares… lol. Eh, I mean, email your info or let me knowwhat is wrong; and I’ll see about fixin’ things up right.I know that I do not have info on some of the newermembers, so let me know guys…

Once again, from the Motor Corps officers andmembers, have a great holiday season and don’tforget those less fortunate. They are all around us,especially this year.

See you next year, same place, same station. Goodnight, Dave. Good night, Chet. God bless and guide usall, and to all, a good night!

You’re not too late to get in on the South CountyShrine Club Holiday Party at the Englewood

Elks Club on Sunday December 12! Contact Presi-dent Sam Cohen 377-0273 for reservations, menuchoices and tickets.

Returning snowbirds including Nobles BobHumphrey and Don Valerino swelled our numbersthe last two months at our mixers and picnics. Wegorged ourselves on brats and all the fixin’s, at ouroutdoor “Octoberfeast”, presided over by Guest ChefAndrew Somerville, (somehow related to Noble“Mixmaster Bob” and Lady Wally). See photos. Guestsincluded Noble Bob and Lady Betty Behringer fromEnglewood Eastern Star and Myakka Scottish RiteClub. Noble Jack Watson with his crew of “Pilgrims”presented us an outstanding “Thanksgiving TurkeyFry” together with turkey deep-frying services forthose preparing dinners for November 25.

Each Tuesday 7:30 a.m., rain or shine, 52 weeks ofthe year, we breakfast at the Olde World Restaurantin North Port for info, fun and fellowship. We inviteany Mason or Shriner families to join us for somefriendly banter, and civic projects. Recent guestsincluded Barry Gerber and Elaine Davidson fromFlorida’s Blood Centers who presented a lively dialogon how regular blood donation make healthier heartsand resolved old myths about giving blood. Theyemphasized that blood supplies of all types are al-ways needed in any community, and that the blood

centers “try to make your hour a happy experience!”They are one of the many grateful recipients of ourused magazines with the attached Shrine Club Stampthat our Noble John Brophy and his crew distribute tolocal clinics and emergency stations. Please contrib-ute your old magazines with blackened or cut outaddress labels to our Tuesday breakfasts.

Sickness and distress: Lady Kerry Van Fleet is onthe road to recovery with a knee replacement, andNoble Bob Adams is home from Quality Health Care, but still requiring nursing care. Please offer supportto him and his family, and keep them in your thoughtsand prayers.

And as we go to press, Noble Martin Horowitz (Ihope that’s spelled right) W.M. Englewood Blue Lodge, followed by Noble John Brophy were the only tworeaders to correctly identify our November QuotableNotable as George Will, who wrote on the failure ofprohibition in America: “In the fight between law andappetite, bet on appetite. Americans then were, and letus hope still are magnificently ungovernable by electednuisances.” Noble Martin breakfasted with us beforeflying to Massachusetts for his daughter’s wedding.

So here’s our December Quotable Notable quiz:Who wrote, “These days we tend to mush the religiousobservances together and say “Season’s Greetings,”which, when you stop to think about it, means abso-lutely nothing. It’s like walking up to somebody andsaying ‘Appropriate Remark’ in a loud cheery voice.

Ho, Ho, Ho from Santa! (Honorary member of theModel Ts) Christmas Customs—A look at Christ-

mas customs and where they originated by UPI.Busy with last minute Christmas shopping, you

may not realize that Christmas gifts are a compara-tively recent custom in the United States. In the earlydays of the nation, gifts were exchanged on NewYear’s Day—not Christmas. December 25 was a spe-cial day of worship; a religious holiday and nothingelse. But around the mid-1800’s, gift giving at Christ-mas became popular. It’s been growing ever since, until today. Well, just look at the crowds in the storesacross the country. Millions of people are loadeddown with Christmas packages for other people. SoChristmas giving certainly is here to stay. Christmascards didn’t appear in the United States until theearly 1900’s. The first American card manufacturerwas a German named Louis Prang of Roxbury, Mas-sachusetts. And there’s irony to this fact. It seemsMassachusetts is the only state in the nation whichonce outlawed Christmas. Actually, Massachusettswasn’t a state, but rather a British colony at the time.It abolished Christmas observance for 22 years, from1659 to 1681. Anyone who didn’t show up for work onChristmas Day was fined five shillings. Massachu-setts didn’t make Christmas a legal holiday until1885. Then there’s the mistletoe tradition. What’snow a yuletide license for kissing used to be crushedand fermented into intoxicating liquor by pagan tribes. The Norsemen regarded mistletoe as a sacred berry

with great powers of healing. The custom of hangingChristmas stockings originated in Holland, wherethe children used their shoes to collect gifts. Thewooden shoes were parked by the fireplace to be filledby their patron saint, St. Nicholas. Information pro-vided by United Press International.

Our computer decided to “crash,” but after beingdown for a couple of weeks we are up and running

again; my apologies for missing the November Re-porter.

Now that the cooler temps are here, we are kickinginto high gear. Just to recap: The Venice Sun FiestaParade was very well attended by our bandsmen andit’s always a great experience to play in front of anaudience instead of just “in passing.” Our bandsmenalso traveled to Araba Shrine for their fall ceremo-nial; it’s a pleasure to be able to help our fellowShriners.

Our big event was the Jazz Concert with the “KenLoomer Big Band.” It was their premiere perfor-mance at the Shrine and we had a good turnout. Wewill have more information in the January Reporter.

One of the high points is the Venice ChristmasParade on November 27. What a joy it is to watchchildren and adults alike enjoying our performanceand be bewitched by our heavenly tunes. The sameholds true with the Sarasota Parade on December 4.There seems to be no end to spectators all along MainStreet, however, we just love the reaction of thechildren when they see and hear us.

The Oriental Band is looking forward to our ownSahib Shrine Fall Ceremonial on December 3 and 4.Hopefully we will have another fine class of nobles. We welcome and appreciate their commitment.

On December 11, we will again show off our bandat the Children’s Christmas Party at Sahib Shriners.Let’s have a great afternoon; after all, it is all aboutour children!

We do want to congratulate our “Model T” unit forparticipating in the Southeast Shrine Association inSouth Carolina and capturing two second-place tro-phies.

Congratulations are also in order for Rocky Kear-ney on his election of Oriental Guide to our Divan. What a great choice. Just a thought: Maybe we canpersuade Rocky to hang out with us after his commit-ment with the Divan.

On behalf of the Oriental Band and their ladies,my Lady Sonja and I want to wish all of the nobilityat Sahib Shriners a very Merry Christmas and ahappy, healthy and safe New Year.

On Saturday, October 9 a fundraiser was held atDandria’s Café in Bradenton. $120 was raised and Iwas told that anytime we needed a fundraiser for thehospital they would help. There were two clowns andabout a dozen Shriners, including Potentate Don Vosand Lady Carol.

The rest of October was spent working on ourtribute to veterans which we had Friday evening with

coverage by the Herald Tribune and many veteran’sorganizations. The presentation was outstanding

I am scheduled to speak to the Kiwanis Club ofSouth Sarasota on November 23.

There will be another fundraiser this month at theDominos Pizza at 12th and Tuttle. I’ll get that infor-mation out as it develops, I am also working with theSarasota Rotary Club to schedule a hospital talk andstill have four possible deliveries in Wauchula.

“Koins 4 Kids” is pushing $900 and I would likeyou and your club and unit members to get a jar fromMary and take it home. Between you, your wife andthe neighbors it doesn’t take long to fill one. I’mworking on my sixth one since we started the programand being at the hospital weekly, I know they can useevery “Koin!”

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

When Brice and Jennifer Morano of Gibson, City, Ill., learned they were expecting their first child, they were ecstatic and looked forward to the happy event.

A sonogram taken 20 weeks into the pregnancy, however, was abnormal, and their physician said a few words no parent wants to hear: “I hate to be the bearer of bad news.”

The sonogram indicated the baby could possibly have several difficulties, including a cleft lip and palate.

“We didn’t know how it would turn out. Though we were scared of the prognosis we prayed and kept hope,” said Jennifer, who delivered Kyra on September 8, 2009, in Champaign, Ill. “When she was born, I’ll never forget the relief Brice and I felt after hearing her cry for the first time. We knew everything was going to be alright.” Despite the worrisome prognosis, the only problem Kyra was born with was an incomplete cleft of the left side of her lip and left gum.

Finding Treatment for KyraBrice and Jennifer began to look into treatment options for their daughter, and ultimately applied to Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago. The Morano family first visited the hospital in December 2009. At that time, the cleft lip and palate team provided a clearly outlined treatment plan to the parents.

Kyra’s first surgery, which took place in January 2010, closed her cleft lip, and placed ear tubes.

“The nurses did a great job of caring for Kyra and her recovery was very good. We were taught to use a syringe to feed her for the two weeks following surgery, and then went back to a bottle,” said Jennifer.

Making the Best ChoiceToday, Kyra is an alert, happy, playful girl who loves to interact with other kids. In her free time, Jennifer takes her daughter to their local nursing home to visit the patients. “The residents’ faces light up when they see her,” said Jennifer.

During a visit to Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago, Jennifer met Mollie Carlson, a cleft lip and palate patient who serves as a hospital ambassador, speaking to hundreds of people all across the country about her experience at the hospital. Mollie spent a few minutes sharing her own story, which was very helpful to the Moranos.

“It is so encouraging meeting other families and patients who have been through the same things. The care at Shriners Hospitals for Children® is over the top – it was the best choice that my husband and I have made for our daughter,” said Jennifer.

Sar-I Court No. 79 LOSNAby Diane Albinson, High Priestess, [email protected]

Nyla Temple No. 152Daughters of the Nileby Katherine Rodd, Queen, [email protected]

We had a great meeting in November with 66 la-dies in attendance. I am excited about the par-

ticipation at the meetings this year. Three of the newBonnie Lassies attended. We had the opportunity tohave lunch together.

The Court was very generous with the food dona-tions to All Faiths Food Bank. We collected enoughfood items to need two car trunks to haul it all!!Ladies, thank you for making the food drive a success.

I will report about Unit Meet in the next article. Iknow the bus ride and the meet itself will be so muchfun!

Somebody told me a secret! Mrs. Claus will pay avisit to Sar-I Court during our December meeting. The money collected during the Christmas March, together with the Sunshine and Snuf collections, willbe donated to the Salvation Army. It is my hope thatthis will help, in some way, the less fortunate duringthis holiday season.

Read the shortened version of the Sand Scrollwhen it comes out. You will find lots of importantinformation regarding future meeting dates, a smallfundraiser for the Court and updates on upcomingCourt sponsored events.

With all the Court must do to prepare for GrandCouncil, I thought it might be fun and easy to have aPhantom Tea Fundraiser. No effort needed, no trav-eling required and no fancy clothes to wear! A smalldonation of $5 or more if the spirit moves you, sent tome, is all that is required. The proceeds of the tea willbe split equally between the Court and the ShrinersHospital for Children. Ladies, let’s try to make this asuccess!

See you soon, and remember to begin each daywith love in your heart!

Please call me (941) 922-9311 or <[email protected]>for information about joining our active organization. We have great fun, while working hard for the chil-dren in our Shriners Hospitals.

We have been busy here at Nyla Temple; all thecraft sales and tables we have set up have been

a terrific success. The ladies sure do put their talentstogether and make some great items for us to sell. With everyone’s combined efforts we are able to do-nate more each year to the Shriners Hospitals forChildren and to the children of the Shrine Hospital.Remember ladies to start your holiday shopping anddecorations early. We have some great table runnersthat serve two seasons and make great gifts. Forthose tuff jobs, we have those great scrubbies thateven you men can use for taking off those pesky lovebugs off the car and it is kind to the car finish.

November’s luncheon was a lot of fun. We playeda very different version of Bingo with some greatprizes, had a great lunch of DDK beef stew preparedby Donna Fleming, Diane Nourse, and Kathy Rodd.We celebrated Founders Day with Connie Lawson’swonderful peanut butter pie and Doris Russell’s sur-prise dessert. Being Founders Day, many of us woreour uniforms from our Supreme Queen’s year. Whata beautiful sight to see the different designs andgorgeous colors. Ladies you sure do shine.

For December’s session, we invite our nobles tojoin us for a great turkey dinner with all the fixings.Desserts will be a surprise. Nobles you will get the

opportunity to learn more on the Gentlemen of theCreek while your ladies are in session. Ladies, pleaseremember to keep up with your dues. Not sure -please give me a call and we will check your status.

The New Year should be just as fun with ourpageantry unit working real hard on their debut to bescheduled for the Supreme Queen’s visit on Febru-ary 12, 2011. Ladies remember to mark your calen-dars for this official visit. Supreme Queen, SueLayman is one super lady you do not want to missmeeting. January we will be having the Queen’s tea.The exact date has not been set yet. Ladies bring outyour best-looking hats and let’s have some fun show-ing off our finery. During this holiday season, let usremember our service men and women who are pro-tecting us so we may enjoy this season with ourfamilies. Pray that they come home to their lovedones safe. Also, remember our ladies and nobles whoare going through difficult times with health issuesand send prayers their way, think of them with a cardor a phone call to say I’m thinking of you. From all ofus here at Nyla Temple we wish our Masonic/ShrineFamily a wonderful holiday season and a healthyNew Year. Watch for our newsletter for more infor-mation and dates to remember.

High Twelve Clubby Bob Rodd, [email protected]

My fellow nobles of Sahib Shriners and others, Iwant to thank each of you that were at the

October 28 luncheon and stayed and listened to meshare information about High Twelve. I truly hopeyou found it informative and interesting and gave youa desire to come to our luncheons to find out moreabout us. Some of you came to me both before andafter my talk and asked about coming to the CortezClub which meets at Duff’s Original Buffet at thecorner of Route 41 and 60th Avenue in Bradenton. Ilook forward to seeing several of you come and seewhat we are all about. We have great fellowship, great food, sometimes entertainment, a monthly auc-tion and more as well as many other opportunities toshare in a Masonic way. The cost is $8.50 for thebuffet which includes many, many choices of foodplus your drink, tax and tip. A great buy. When youcome in look for the room to the left and that is wherewe are. Do not pay when you enter but come to ourroom and pay us. We arrive between 10:30 a.m. and11:00 a.m. and finish between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m.Come and find out what we are all about, and remem-ber, your lady is always welcome.

Many of you, I believe, are aware that in just a fewdays (December 5-7) The Florida State Association ofMasonic High Twelve Clubs, Inc. will be holding it’s44th Annual State Convention right here at Sahib.Hopefully many of you, who are High Twelvians willbe in attendance with us.

In addition for all of you that are not HighTwelvians (yet), but have purchased tickets, and will

be coming to help us celebrate a very special eveningat the Grand Master’s Banquet, we thank you.

My year as state president will end at the close ofthe convention on Tuesday when the 2010-2011 Slateof Officers will be installed. It truly has been a greatyear for me and for High 12. However, finishing asstate president does not in any way finish my time asa High Twelvian. I am looking to assist our newpresident and High 12 in whatever form the new statepresident would like me to and by looking for newareas to open some additional clubs. Over the years,we have had other clubs in other towns or areas, butdue to many reasons, several of them ceased.

A major reason for some was lack of some people tolead. I hope there are some out there that would liketo assist in starting new clubs in areas that had thembefore or start one in a completely new area alto-gether. How about Sarasota, Longboat Key, Parrish,Palmetto, Myakka, Englewood, Venice, Nokomis, etc.?If you are interested in seeing, a club started in yourarea, please contact me (941) 776-0937 or<[email protected]> and let me know. If you sendme an email, please let me know in subject line whatit is about so I open it.

Part of the future of High 12 is in your hands. Please step forward and be part of our growth.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this andI look forward to having you follow-up and shareyourself and your lady with us.

York Rite – Vision of Masonryby B. John Ross, KYCH, [email protected]

Vision of Freemasonrycontinued from recent issues.

How far have we traveled from the road of indi-vidual freedoms? We have let the complexities anddifficulties of modern life and industry frighten us toseek the protection and security of a welfare state. We have surrendered our right to govern ourselveslocally in many spheres of activity to the control of anall-powerful central government. We have failed tovote in the election of important officials. We havebeen indifferent to the trend and progress of liberaland socialistic legislation that undermines the heri-tage of freedom and the American way of life. We haveeagerly sought state and federal grants, subsidiesand interventions in order to avoid standing upon ourown responsibility and bearing the consequences ofour right to choose and to act in the light thereof.

President Theodore Roosevelt spoke words whichare more applicable and true today when he warned:“If we stand idly by, if we seek merely swollen, slothful ease and ignoble peace, if we shrink from thehard contests which men must win at hazard of theirlives at risk of all that they hold dear, then the bolder

and stronger peoples will pass us by and will win forthemselves the domination of the worlds.” How truehe spoke.

Truly, today there is a clarion call to Masonseverywhere to respond to the ideals of our heritageand the teachings within the lodge for the preserva-tion of our freedom. So we must conclude that it is notenough to believe in freedom as Masons, we muststand up and be counted when the chips are down. Wemust day by day perform the duties of citizens whobelieve in and want to preserve freedom. We must putaside all selfish desires and take off the mantle ofindifference. Our strength lies in our firm belief infreedom and the determination to maintain our free-dom with sound, informed understanding of Ameri-can ideals and principles, and active participation ascitizens in affairs of city, county, state and nation.Masons must be men of faith, men of conviction, menof action, with God-given strength and determinationto uphold the cause of freedom and democracy. Weshould rededicate ourselves to the principle thatfreedom under God is man’s destiny. Author un-known (to be continued in next issue.)

Scottish Riteby Lou Ortt, PP, 33°, [email protected]

On behalf of all the Scottish Rite officers, we wisheach and everyone a very enjoyable and happy

holiday season. As we approach the holiday, remember one of the

important lessons presented throughout our ScottishRite Degrees – that of charity. The Greeks had aword, “charisma,” meaning gift and numerous otherwords from the same root which suggest rejoicing, gladness. From Latin we have a similar word, “carus,”meaning dear, possibly signifying love. From thedictionary, charity is an act done freely and spontane-ously out of friendship.

Masonic ritual contains many ideas which arepractical and simple applications of charity. When welook at Masonic charity for its basic intent, we findlove. We reflect this in the desire to do acts of kind-

ness for our brethren and community because, withinour ranks, we believe it to be the proper thing to do.

This love is something that comes into the heartand rests there. It is something we can’t see ordescribe yet is causes our actions of affection, esteem, good will, and reverence, which are all spokes of love.We must all work to keep it emanating within us.

In our ritual, we find, as expressed in I Corinthians13:13, “So faith, hope and charity (love) abide, thesethree, but the greatest of these is charity (love).” Allour rituals show how charity helps our inner templegrow so we can become the kind of person we weremeant to be.

At holiday season, let us remember to provide thislove and charity not out of duty, but out of friend-ship.

Lt. Col Kathy Champion

Kathy became acquainted with the Shriners when she was veryyoung. Kathy, aged 5 and her sister aged 3 were burned in a

domestic accident and rehabilitated through skin graft research bythe Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston, Texas.

Lieutenant Colonel Kathy Champion began her military career asa paramedic for the Army in Fort Sam Houston, Texas at the rank ofPrivate First Class. She went into the Reserves to have children andraise them, and pursue a civilian career alongside her military one.She became a transportation officer in 1985 and went back and forthfrom active to reserve for the next 27½ years. She joined the CivilAffairs Branch in early 2000 to command and be a member of SpecialForces.

As Commander of a Civil Affairs Unit in Iraq, Kathy and her teamwere responsible for rebuilding West Baghdad. After surviving sevenexplosions, harsh sandstorms, severe living conditions and the loss offive soldiers, she returned home with signs of Post-traumatic StressDisorder. And if that wasn’t bad enough, doctors discovered a chronicviral infection that had affected her optic nerve. Kathy lost her vision, entering a darkness of soul that matched her sight.

She enjoys “paying it forward” one veteran at a time by sharing herstory about a different type of battle—the one to regain her freedomand independence with the help of the Paws for Patriots program atSoutheastern Guide Dogs.

The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donatingaluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As ofDecember 10, 2009, they have collected 65,743 lbs., for a total of$31,275.13 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS

1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete canswould require a great deal more storage space. You shouldgo ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way,in the dumpster behind Sahib.

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds

worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs

are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. Themoney netted from recycling goes directly into the “WheelChair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital forChildren.

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!

Hospital Transportation FundCollection Boxes

What are they?A plastic cube with a slot in the top.

What are the boxes for?To help collect donations, money for ourHospital Transportation Fund to helprelieve the pressure from the HospitalDays Fund Drive.

When are the boxes to be used? All year round, so our friends can donatesmall amounts of cash at any time.

As most of you know, many businesses have some kind ofcollection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours?
