Christmas Thoughts
I can still vividly remember childhood memories of deeply colored and hot electric lights, strungon a live Christmas tree, releasing the most beautiful pine fragrance, combined with the smell of a realwood fire. As scents can so often do, this one takes me back to magical memories of stockings, angels andtheir instruments on spun glass and holly garlands. I remember finding a piece of gum in my stocking thathad lain there, undiscovered for an entire year! That seemed like such a special moment at the time … as Ithink back on my reflections as a fiveyearold, so many decades past, I find myself wondering why? Icertainly wouldn’t find the discovery of an old stick of gum special now. It would be lovely to recover thatchildhood joy for small things.
I encourage you to think back to your own best childhood experiences of Christmas. Can youremember the excitement of Christmas sights and the whiffs of baking cakes, filled with cinnamon, andginger, and nutmeg? Do you remember the happy look on your mom’s face when she pulled out Christmastreasures from boxes, decorations stored these many months past? Can you remember the exquisite, almost painful, excitement of having to go to bed on Christmas Eve? How could they have thought youwould sleep at all on Christmas Eve?
What has happened to us in the meantime? Both good and bad, I’m sure.I refuse to believe that we’re incapable of that same intense capacity to be moved by adult
experiences that we had as children. Perhaps, the only way to get back to the old immoderate excitement isto be moved by something else … something with an adult focus … something that says that all of life ismeaningful, that our efforts matter, that our lives make a difference. We can’t find that in presents under atree, like we once did. Biblical commentator Roy Smith commented that those who have not foundChristmas in their hearts will never find it under a tree.
I was given pause by one of Fr. Ron Rolheiser’s reflections: “Our hearts are good. We wantChristmas to renew us spiritually, but our lives are too pressured, too full of activity and tiredness. … Thespirit of Christmas is still in us, real, but lying like a neglected Baby in the straw waiting to be picked up.And we do intend to pick up the Baby. …”
At the heart of things … everything is about that Baby. So I invite you, with the willful openness ofour passed childhoods, to go to the manger and pick up that Infant. Contemplate over the message of thatBaby’s entrance into our world, as a human, how good it is to be a human. Consider, from that Baby’shelplessness, how acceptable it is for us to be bewildered and overwhelmed by life. Know, from yourreflection on that Baby’s eternal existence at the right hand of theFather who sent Him, that you are so deeply loved by both the Senderand the Sent.
May the Father, who also sent angels to watch over His Baby, guidethose same angels to watch over you, and all you love, this Christmas.
