The Importance of Your First JobYour first position after graduating is more important than you may think. It is the first of a series of steps into your career path and towards a dream job. The experiences and skills you gain in that job will prepare you to take on new challenges in line with your interests, knowledge and abilities. While it is common for individuals to transition careers or industries throughout their lifespan, your past experiences and positions are the key to your next job. Thus, instead of peppering the industry with resume applications, take a moment to plan your career path. This can be done in broad terms rather than listing specific positions. Think about the experience needed for your dream job and how you would progress towards it. Consider the skills, projects, background, and industry knowledge necessary to hold the position you want. Once you have a clear vision of your goal, work your way down to the kind of positions you would hold before then.This is your projected career plan to succeed in each position you hold: 1. Strive to exude professionalism through displaying competency, honesty, integrity, and accountability. 2. Honor your commitments, be polite and respectful, and always be prepared for meetings and appointments. 3. Student Spotlight: Using Career Services to Propel Your Job Search Vivian Rohleder, WSU Career Services Career CounselorJames Guguei is a WSU student graduating this December, 2014. He has been working with a career counselor this semester to prepare for the job search. Recently, he shared his experience and advice for other graduating students.How has Career Services helped you for the job search?“I was first connected to a career counselor after a missed appointment. She contacted me to check in and o�ered to help me with the job search process. I found this experience to be immensely more beneficial than any assistance I could have hoped for. Initially, we worked via distance appointments and e-mails. I sent the career counselor my resume and cover letter and she was quick to provide insightful feedback. Once I found positions I wanted to apply for, I forwarded the job description to her for guidance on how to tailor my resume and cover letter to each particular job. After lining up a few interviews, I asked my career counselor to meet and practice my interviewing skills. This opportunity to practice my answers has been a great help. This whole process has helped my confidence immensely.”What has been most helpful working with a career counselor?“I cannot pick just one thing. The thoughtful comments and suggestions from the resume review ensured my resume would be looked at by recruiters. I was referred to a position through Hire-a-Shocker that turned out to be a very good match for me, so I applied and was selected to interview with the hiring manager. Now my interviewing skills have improved and I am prepared for my upcoming interviews.”Do you have any advice for graduating students who are looking for jobs?“If you are unsure about what jobs to look for, go to Career Services. Class of 2014: Top Paid Liberal Arts MajorsMajors in foreign languages and literatures were the top-paid among Class of 2014 liberal arts graduates at the bachelor’s degree level, according to results of NACE’s September 2014 Salary Survey.

These majors earned the highest average starting salary at $46,100, followed by political science/government majors at $43,500 and liberal arts and sciences/general studies graduates at $42,400. (See Figure 1.)

Employers hiring both foreign languages and literatures majors and liberal arts and sciences/general studies majors and did so primarily to fill elementary and middle school teaching positions. Meanwhile, employers hired political science/government majors for various teaching positions ranging from elementary to postsecondary, and as management analysts, financial and insurance managers, social workers, human resources workers, paralegals, legal assistants, and legal support workers.

In all, Class of 2014 graduates in five liberal artsmajors earned average starting salaries thatexceeded $40,000.
