December 2018 PGA President Jim Anderson’s Message

We have our Christmas potluck in December. It is a wonderful time to

share our favorite dishes, get to know each other more and of course

exchange gifts. The gifts can be small art or something related to art such

as a book, art supplies, or gift certificates (wrapped). Even more im-

portant it is a time to connect with each other. This year the potluck will be at the Asia Pacific Cul-

tural Center from 11am - 1:00pm. This is a gathering of unique and inspired people.

Bring your favorite potluck dish and join us.

One of the ways we support each is to attend each other’s receptions and shows

when we have solo shows. Our art is an expression of who we are, what we value

and how we see the world. In many ways, each piece of art is a mini self-portrait. It

is deeply appreciated to have another PGA member show up at our shows and recep-

tion. It is a gift that we can give each other all year long.

..Merry Christmas .….Jim Jim’s phone #’s: 253-531-0713 c 253-255-6826

will have more info in January 2019. What is a “Good Shape”?

DEFINITION:

1. Height & width are different:

Squares, circles equilateral triangles are boring.

2. One edge is “Oblique” (Slanted), draws eye

into the painting not toward any edge.

3. Interlocks with nearby shapes.

Edges have bumps and dents...

like a jigsaw puzzle piece.

REMEMBER:

Not every shape in a painting will be a “good

shape” (full moons, etc. are allowed

But the more good shapes there are, the

more exciting the painting……

November Demo: Tis Huberth

“The Positive &

Beneficial Critique”

The word “critique can bring back stories

of horror and humiliation in the hearts & minds of many artist. After all the

word “critique” means “to criticize” - doesn’t it? Not really - the true defini-

tion actually means “to analyze”. A wonderful demo by Tis...just wasn’t long

enough as some members didn’t get their art pieces critiqued....another time

Tis? —Tis Huberth—(who has been painting for 53 years and teaching for 33)

talked about the advantages and many benefits of positive critiquing and the

ability to analyze our own work in order to grow as an artist. This lady changed some of our “attitudes”.

Tis left flyers for each of us, but I included here since some PGA members were not at the meeting.
