Welcome to Our Parish Communities

What Do We Do? by Dr. Scott Hahn

Third Sunday of Advent (Cycle C)

Zephaniah 3:14-18 Isaiah 12:2-6

Philippians 4:4-7 Luke 3:10-18 The people in today's Gospel are "filled with expectation." They believe John the Baptist might be the Messiah they've been waiting for. Three times we hear their question: "What then should we do?" The Messiah's coming requires every man and woman to choose - to "repent" or not. That's John's message and it will be Jesus' too (see Luke 3:3; 5:32; 24:47). "Repentance" translates a Greek word, metanoia (literally, "change of mind"). In the Scriptures, repentance is presented as a two-fold "turning" - away from sin (see Ezekiel 3:19; 18:30) and toward God (see Sirach 17:20-21; Hosea 6:1). This "turning" is more than attitude adjustment. It means a radical life-change. It requires "good fruits as evidence of your repentance" (see Luke 3:8). That's why John tells the crowds, soldiers and tax collectors they must prove their faith through works of charity, honesty and social justice. In today's Liturgy, each of us is being called to stand in that crowd and hear the "good news" of John's call to repentance. We should examine our lives, ask from our hearts as they did: "What should we do?" Our repentance should spring, not from our fear of coming wrath (see Luke 3:7-9), but from a joyful sense of the nearness of our saving God. This theme resounds through today's readings: "Rejoice!...The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all," we hear in today's Epistle. In today's Responsorial, we hear again the call to be joyful, unafraid at the Lord's coming among us. In today's First Reading, we hear echoes of the angel's Annunciation to Mary. The prophet's words are very close to the angel's greeting (compare Luke 1:28-31). Mary is the Daughter Zion - the favored one of God, told not to fear but to rejoice that the Lord is with her, "a mighty Savior.” She is the cause of our joy, for in her draws near the Messiah, as John had promised: "One mightier than I is coming."

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel

is Open!

Perpetual Adoration is our response to Jesus’s love for us. We become a part of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration when we consent to spend a quiet holy hour of prayer in His Eucharistic Presence once a week (on the same day at the same time every week) so that we, united together, adore Our Lord 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

The River of Divine Mercy Collaborative began our Perpetual Adoration Program at St. Rita’s Church on November 25th, the Feast of Christ the King. All are welcome to come be with Jesus, and we continue to gather adorers willing to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament for one hour per week. The Adoration Chapel is easily accessible from the rear parking lot, ramp entrance. If you would like to commit to an hour or have any questions, please contact Nataliya Poto at (508) 633-4894 or email [email protected].

St. Mary Magdalen Parish welcomes all to

Coffee & Donuts after the 7:30 & 9:30 a.m. Masses each Sunday!

We are in need of more people to help with this ministry. It’s a very small time commitment and a great way to serve our parish. Please call the Parish Offices at (978) 957-0322 if you feel called to help.

GIVING TREES

We are asking for your support once again this year. Gift tags are out on our Giving Trees at all three parishes. Please choose a tag or two, buy the items listed, and return them to the church by the dates listed below. St. Mary Magdalen: Please wrap only the SVDP gifts (Tyngsboro Schools ask that their gifts NOT be wrapped.) Please return gifts for SVDP to the church by December 16th. Please return gifts for Tyngsboro Schools by December 10th. St. Rita: All gifts are for our friends at the Pregnancy Care Center, now located at our Rectory. Please return items by December 16th, unwrapped. Ste Marguerite: Please wrap all gifts and return them to the church by December 16th. Please make sure the Giving Tree tag is firmly attached to the package. Thank you for your help with this ministry and for blessing those in need during this season of giving.

SJA HELPS LOWELL SUN SANTA FUND!

Teachers doubled the amount of $29.00 collected for a total of $60.00 donated. The Lowell Sun Santa Fund coordinates with Lowell area social service agencies, Community Teamwork, Inc. and the Salvation Army to provide assistance to families in the 23 cities and towns served.

From the time that we were young kids growing up in Dorchester receiving First Communion, through our marriage, as we brought up our own four boys, and now as grandparents, Boston priests have been a guiding light that we reach out to in different situations that have come up in our lives. As parents, our faith life has helped us to guide our family. We are an ordinary family, and, like all families, things don’t always go smoothly. The priests we have known through the years, like Fr. Peter Martocchio, have helped us to learn to take things in stride and put our faith in God, and that there is always hope. While not perfect, ours has been a wonderful life, which has been enriched by many Boston priests who have helped us along the way.
